Fever Dreams by Nicole Jordan - SPOILERS
What did you like about Eve-
Although I do mention below that she put her family first over Ryder, I do like that she had a STRONG LOVE for her family - esp. her sister.She would do anything to protect her.And although her aunts could be unbearable sometimes, she had a STRONG LOVE and FONDNESS for them.Although there were moments when I agreed with Ryder that Eve should stay home, away from danger, Eve was a strong-willed, stubborn cookie.She didn't want to stay home - she wanted to help solve the mystery.REBEL!!!:)

What didn't you like about Eve-
Although it was the norm at the time, I didn't like that Eve married the wrong man because she was expected to.She really hurt Ryder.Although she did it so her sister would have a secure future, and so she wouldn't shame her family, she really hurt Ryder.I also didn't like that she didn't want to remarry - sex with Ryder was OK, but not marriage?Maybe she was still thinking about her sister and family, but she was definitely not thinking of Ryder.She also seemed a little uppity - like Ryder and her sister's love interest were beneath her.Like they weren't good enough for her and her sister.

What did you like about Ryder-
Men usually don't wear their feelings on their sleeve.Men usually hide their vulnerability.Ryder doesn't.He's TOUGH, yet VULNERABLE.His LOVE for not only Eve, but for her family - her siblings and aunts.The only thing he hid was his LOVE for Eve - but that was the FUN.He used Eve to help him find a bride just to get close to her.His pain moved me when Eve and the aunts treated him cruelly.He acted like a BIG BABY because he got his feelings hurt - and that both made me smile and want to comfort him.When Eve tried to apologize, he didn't make it easy on her.He forgave the aunts quickly, but he let Eve know just how much she hurt him.I LOVE how he took charge to solve the mystery of this story.

What didn't you like about Ryder-
There wasn't anything I didn't like about Ryder.This isn't a dislike, but there were a few scenes where I thought he should be more MANLY and less GOOFY because he was in love.

Favorite scene with Eve-
Eve KICKS MAJOR BUTT when she asks questions about the attacks on her and the kidnapping of her sister, and pulls a gun on her victim.

Favorite scene with Ryder-
Everyone seems to be against Ryder for protecting Eve from her attacker.Esp. Eve.Her words hurt him the most.He blames her for not listening to him - for refusing to stay at home.He is both TOUGH and VULNERABLE in this scene.

Together-
In the carriage when Ryder denies Eve the comfort she needs and wants from him.He's still hurt by her attitude toward him.

Casting Eve, I'd cast Reese Witherspoon.
Casting Ryder, I'd cast Julian McMahon.

Fever Dreams
This is the final book in a series by Nicole Jordan.Once I got used to some of the I Love you but I am not going to tell until you say it first I enjoyed reading them.There was always an antagonist in the story and it was refreshing not to find them repetative.

Alex Ryder dreams of her nightly. For the last seven years, the object of his nocturnal obsession, Lady Eve, has been otherwise engaged as the wife of the Earl of Hayden. Before becoming a countess, Eve was the woman that Alex loved and wanted to be his wife. Fate and unspoken rules of society got in their way, however, and in order to save her family from financial ruin, Eve agreed to an arranged marriage. Alex and Eve exchanged one passionate kiss before she was swept away to London and the man she married. Now, the Earl is dead and Alex knows that there is only one thing to do. Alex and Eve's twin siblings hatch an elaborate plan in order to convince Eve that Alex should be her next, and last, husband.

Lady Eve Montlow has vowed with the death of her husband not to marry ever again. Eve enjoys her widowed status and does not want to have to give over her life to another man. Eve is surprised to find out that the boy she once knew as Alex is now Sir Alex, extremely wealthy, and residing across the street from her. Lost in thought, Eve doesn't realize that she is being observed by the one man she is thinking about. The one man that was her friend years ago. The one man whom she hurt with her marriage.

Eve's brother and sister happily invite Alex to spend time with them all the while knowing that Eve and Alex belong together. The twin schemers and Alex come up with a plan for Eve to put her matchmaking skills to good use and find Alex a wife. Knowing that Eve will be unable to stand Alex marrying another, Eve's sister sets her cap for Alex, much to the dismay of Eve. Eve is unable to stand the thought of her sister marrying Alex, or rather; she is unable to stand the thought of Alex marrying her sister. Eve goes to Alex to ask that he refrain from pursuing her sister. Alex, in turn, has one more trick up his sleeve. He and Eve come up with a solution to Eve's request.

Alex and Eve are unable to stop their attraction to each other. It seems, though that fate may be trying its hand once again by interfering in their lives. Eve has had several attempts on her life and now it is up to Alex, a member of the secret Society of Guardians, to find the culprit before it is too late.

FEVER DREAMS, the fourth book in Nicole Jordan's Paradise series, is a poignant tale of hopes and dreams and a man's innermost desire to be with the one woman he has loved for years. In FEVER DREAMS, Nicole Jordan has woven a tale of intrigue, sensuality, and sexual tension throughout the novel that kept me guessing and enthralled from beginning to end. As with all of Ms. Jordan's novels I have read, I was thoroughly satisfied with a story well told and I know other readers will enjoy FEVER DREAMS as well. I can't say enough about this author other than she has done it again!

So boring I couldn't finish reading it.
I really expected to love this book. The premise was great. Unfortunately, there was no tension and there's no real obstacle to Ryder finally getting the woman of his dreams.

The aunts from Eve's previous marriage are no real obstacles, just nuisance characters that really have no power to do anything but say nasty things and look down their noses on people.

Eve's brother and sister are in league with Ryder to help him win Eve. The only thing keeping Ryder from his heart's desire is the silly heroine Eve, herself.

The stuff about someone trying to kill Eve sounds like it was thrown in to try and add some kind of tension and danger to this rather boring story, as the question wasn't who would want to kill her, but why would anyone even bother to do it?

The story might have been better if Eve's father who was against Ryder being involved with his daughter had been an obstacle for Ryder or if Eve's husband hadn't been killed off and Ryder came back to save her from her miserable husband.

No one in Urkeneye, not even his father and stepmother, care at all for twelve-year-old Prince Ezrick. His only friend is the cook's daughter, Maddie, with whom he sneaks around the castle and tries to avoid the wrath of Ezrick's stepmother, Vicursa, who they call "the witch" because of her cruel treatment of Ezrick, whose real mother died when he was a young boy. Vicursa finally goes too far when she promises that Maddie will be beaten for any mistake that Ezrick makes, and Ezrick, not wanting to put his friend in danger, runs away from the castle and joins with a band of gypsy-like Vagaries, but not before stumbling across information that a dangerous object, known as Morpheäs, is hidden in the castle.

Ezrick tries to ignore what he knows about the intrigue that plays out after he leaves home, instead trying to accommodate to the Vagarie lifestyle. He befriends a Vagarie boy, Leroy, and together the two of them engage in humorous escapades, but the whole time Ezrick must keep his identity a secret from everyone. Slowly, Ezrick begins to pick up more and more clues about the Morpheäs, and the curse that is supposedly linked to it. With the help of Leroy and the long-distance support of Maddie, Ezrick sets out to prevent the curse from being unleashed once again.

McMakin's characters read like real soon-to-be-teens. I admired Ezrick's integrity, Maddie's toughness, and Leroy's spunk. The geography of the story wavers between amusing and impressive, with settings that often feel like intentional caricatures of fantasy standards but have hearts of their own and add to the story's underhanded humor. The plot relies more upon the human abilities of the characters than any kind of magic, and indeed none of the characters are wizards, although fantastic creatures and curses do appear within the story. Overall, it was an enjoyable, fast-paced read, and I look forward to seeing what McMakin has in store for Ezrick next.

Good first effort; author has great prospects
This is a good first novel and addition to the fantasy genre for middle-grade readers. There are a couple weaknesses, though. The story fails to establish a clear core conflict early on -- the reader doesn't find out who is doing what to whom and why until the end. And the final few chapters are a bit choppy, less polished than most of the book.
However the strengths of the book are impressive. Excellent character development -- believable characters and dialog -- and an excellent creation of a fantasy world. And the author's voice and language are right on, weakening only slightly in those last few chapters.
So, as I said, this is a good beginning that points to even better stuff in the future from this author.

A Must-Read

Hotheaded, love-sick knight, Martin, gets on with life after a very, very unlucky day for him and his templar brethren
This graphic novel, the first in a series, takes place in France, and features the adventures of a doughty, rugged fellow who is already having trouble finding his place in his world, when suddenly "his world" shifts completely out from under his feet. Flashback: as a Templar (knights of Solomon's temple), he never even got to make it all the way to Jerusalem, yet, somehow survived the decimation of the fortress at Acre by the Saracens. Further background story: several years ago his true love married (or, actually was married off to) another man, and; brokenhearted, Martin swears off women, and joined the brotherhood of the Knights Templar. As the actual story begins, as he and his cronies make their way down a crowded street in Paris, the setting a funeral procession in Paris, the date 1307, unknown to him things are about to go very, very wrong for all the Templar Knights.

I just did not get it.....
Let me begin with a disclaimer.This book was my first graphic novel.I chose it because I was interested in the plot, which is about the Templars.Since it is the only graphic novel that I have ever read, I am not sure if my problems with it stem from the medium (and therefore are really my problem), or with its execution in this book.

My first problem is that I could not keep track of the characters.Many looked alike and, since I knew very little about them, it was difficult for me to remember the character's specific situation.My second problem was that the plot was thin, and plot lines did not seem to come to a satisfactory completion.For example, the main character had his heart broken by woman, who in fact was forced to abandon the main character (the main character did not know this fact at the time of the heart break).The woman's life has not gone well, and a reconciliation seems in the cards.This plot line, however, is not resolved.Third, some of the characters are stock characters -- the naughty monks, the unhappy wife of the rich man, etc.There is not a character is the story that I genuinely cared about.

Solomon's Thieves is a new graphic novel that takes the reader back to medieval times and the story of the Knights Templar. The Templars came into being to protect pilgrims on their journey to the Holy Land. Over the years they became strong and wealthy in their own right, and kings began to see them as a threat. When the king of France accused them of corruption and heresy, he forced the Pope's hand into disbanding the entire order. Many Templars were executed.

Solomon's Thieves tells of those who escaped immediate capture and went into hiding. Many were determined to clear the Templar name, and sought to be reunited with their brethren who were also in hiding. Used to being treated as noble and heroic, these Templars chafed at being cast as outlaws.

There were also rumors of great treasure amassed by the Templars, a treasure that has never been found. The remaining Templars considered it their solemn duty to protect it from being discovered.

Solomon's Thieves illustrates this moment in history through the story of Martin, who joined the Templars and went on crusade after his childhood love was forced to marry another. This is the first book of a planned trilogy, and includes an afterword from author Jordan Mechner about the history he conducted and more on the Templar story. Illustrations by LeUyen Pham and Alex Puvilland richly evoke the darkness of the times. I recommend Solomon's Thieves for mother-daughter book clubs with girls aged 14 and older.

I like it! I really do... BUT...
...it would be soooo much easier if the story didn't add and drop characters at will. Though I'm sure familiar faces will pop up in the next book, the events span so much time that even in the same volume I was having trouble with the validity of characters who seemed to be introduced as part of the main posse, then disappeared completely when the main templar got seperated only to be replaced by two new and different sidekicks.

Go fig.

Anyway, the art is enjoyable... with a certain adult cartoonishness. It makes me think of something you'd find coming from a Disney artist working on their own dime.

The plot flows with only a few snags here and there. The intrigue that begins the whole thing is plain to see, but the conspiracy surrounding it only shows the low level (we assume) players so... half a kudo, half a for shame there... making the primary visible antagonists be connected both to the missing treasure AND the forbidden love angle is a bit too cheesy and formulaic, but... "based on true events" and all. What are you gonna do? *shrug*

Still, I recommend at least a read with a possible buy for folks in the mood for a competent adventure comic.

Good quality print
Okay story, great quality print produce for adults who enjoy a little graphic novel. Some materials may be a bit inappropriate for younger children, though (i.e. implications of sex and alcohol.) The pages of this felt very "fancy" for a comic book - it is definitely not cheaply made. If these come in sets, they may be interesting collector's items.

The writers created a very infusing atmosphere for the readers - the words they use are sophisticated. This is an adult's comic book. Again, it is a great read, but I would not recommend it to children. ... Read more

Great for little girls
My girls (3 and 5) love this book.And my 5-yr-old can read some of it.

Into the Dragon's Eye
Ever since devouring a copy of ARABIAN NIGHTS, I have been looking for fantasy stories set in the Middle East, and unfortunately, they're a bit hard to find. And then I heard that Disney Studios was embarking on a new venture: a movie set in Persia and based off the video game series, PRINCE OF PERSIA. A few books have now been written with the release of the film, and one of those is Catherine Hapka's THE CHRONICLE OF YOUNG DASTAN.

Taking place before the events of the movie, the book starts out with Dastan, a street urchin who lives from day to day, just trying to find another scrap of food to survive. When an old beggar tells Dastan and his friends about the mysterious Torch of Atar, Dastan doesn't believe it. But soon, Dastan becomes embroiled in the quest to find the mystical Torch, which has all the power of light and darkness. And with the Huns and an evil sorcerer Vindarna also after the Torch, Dastan will face the greatest challenges of his young life, and possibly the last.

The book doesn't reveal much about the movie, except for some of Dastan's character traits and the city of Nasaf itself, and the story ends up being completely unrelated to any events in the film. It's a fairly quick read, and kids will definitely enjoy the storyline with its numerous chases, escapes, and tinges of fantasy. While I did enjoy the book as kind of a passing read, it didn't ever really grab me except for a few scenes near the end when Dastan and his friends visit some ruins in the middle of the desert. The writing seemed to step up a notch at the end, versus the beginnings of the book, which is mostly filled with Dastan being chased by guards, Huns, other street kids, and even his friends. There are a few clues dropped as to the location of a crucial piece of the Torch, and they are pretty easily solved. One other thing really bothered me, but had to be done in order to move the plot along. At one moment, Dastan overhears some of the Huns talking to each other, and they decide to practice their Persian instead of speaking in their own language. Because of this, Dastan hears some very important information he would have never known otherwise. It comes off as a cheap ploy, and I wish Hapka had found another way around the issue so that Dastan still learns what he needs to know, but as a reader, I don't have to inwardly groan over such an obvious information dump.

All said, the book is a fun one if you don't have much else to read, and kids who see the film will probably enjoy reading more about Dastan and his life before THE SANDS OF TIME. ... Read more
