Excerpt: Sun Yat-sen (pinyin: Sn Yixin; 12 November 1866 12 March 1925) was a Chinese revolutionary and political leader. As the foremost pioneer of Nationalist China, Sun is frequently referred to as the Father of the Nation. Sun played an instrumental role in overthrowing the Qing Dynasty in October 1911, the last imperial dynasty of China. He was the first provisional president when the Republic of China (ROC) was founded in 1912 and later co-founded the Kuomintang (KMT) where he served as its first leader. Sun was a uniting figure in post-Imperial China, and remains unique among 20th-century Chinese politicians for being widely revered amongst the people from both sides of the Taiwan Strait. Although Sun is considered one of the greatest leaders of modern China, his political life was one of constant struggle and frequent exile. After the success of the revolution, he quickly fell out of power in the newly founded Republic of China, and led successive revolutionary governments as a challenge to the warlords who controlled much of the nation. Sun did not live to see his party consolidate its power over the country. His party, which formed a fragile alliance with the Communists, split into two factions after his death. Sun's chief legacy resides in his developing a political philosophy known as the Three Principles of the People: nationalism, democracy, and the people's livelihood. The birth na...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=88483 ... Read more

Excerpt: Field Marshal Jan Christiaan Smuts OM CH ED KC FRS PC (24 May 1870 11 September 1950) was a prominent South African and British Commonwealth statesman, military leader and philosopher. In addition to holding various cabinet posts, he served as Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa from 1919 until 1924 and from 1939 until 1948. He served in the First World War and as a British field marshal in the Second World War. For most of his public life, Smuts, like many other European-descended (e.g. Afrikaner) residents of South Africa, advocated racial segregation, and was opposed to the unilateral enfranchisement of native South Africans, fearing that it would lead to the loss of white power over the native people. However, in 1948 the Smuts government issued the Fagan Report, which stated that complete racial segregation in South Africa was not practical and that restrictions on African migration into urban areas should be abolished. In this, the government was opposed by a majority of Afrikaners under the political leadership of the National Party who wished to deepen segregation and formalise it into ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=204687 ... Excerpt: Johannes Guillaume Christianus Andreas "Jan" Marijnissen (·)) (born 8 October 1952) is a Dutch politician. He has been chairman of the Dutch Socialist Party since 1988 and a member of the House of Representatives since 1994. He was a member of the Communist Unity Movement of the Netherlands (Marxist-Leninist) in the early 1970s until in 1972 he became a member of what is now the Socialist Party. He worked as a benchman and welder (19741985). He was a member of the city council in Oss (19761993), a member of the Provinciale Staten in North Brabant (19871989), and the political and parliamentary leader of the Socialist Party (19942008). Under his leadership, the Socialist Party became the third largest parliamentary party with the Dutch general elections in 2006. In 2008, he resigned as political leader of the Socialist Party for health reasons. Marijnissen has been the chairman and leader in the parliament for the SP since 1989. He is said to appeal to the 'common man', because of his use of simple language. His appeal is also explained by some observers by his capacity of presenting himself as a valid, more social alternative for the PvdA, which moved into a more centrist third way direction by advocating welfare reforms under the leadership of prime minister Wim Kok and his so-called Purple Cabinets (1994-2002). Critics of Marijnissen call his leadership style authoritarian, because he is presumed to have a tight grip on his party. They also disparage his stubborn, traditional leftist defence of the Dutch social securit...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1280917 ... Read more
