Product Description
One of the most influential figures in American music and pop-culture, Johnny Cash is an icon to people of all ages. Steve Turner sifts the man from the legend and presents a picture of the often contradictory figure with unflinching honesty, getting close to the heart of the perfomer known throughout the world as the Man in Black. The Man Called Cash follows the star on his stumbling journey from the cotton fields of Arkansas to the drawing rooms of presidents. It details his self-destructiveness and brushes with the law, as well as his generosity and status as American icon - and keeping in view throughout the deep, enduring faith that informed his life and work. We see Johnny Cash not only as performer and recording artist, but also as neighbour, church-goer, fisherman, father, brother, husband and friend. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Johnny Cash: The Man, The Myth, The Christian, The Rebel
"The Man Called Cash" is a wonderful biography of Johnny Cash, the Man in Black. Steve Turner has done an outstanding job giving a timeline to the career and, more importantly, the personal life of Johnny Cash, the man with the most distinctive voice I've ever heard. I was fortunate to see Cash in concert twice, once in a big arena, and once in a very small club. The experience (especially in the club) was absolutely electrifying; this book satisfied my desire to truly understand the man behind the music.

This book provides details of a life more raucous, and with more highs and lows than most people can even imagine. The relationships Cash had with his two wives, his children, and an amazing assortment of musical legends are reported here without any discernable bias, and Turner is quick to point out the bad with the good, particularly as the bad normally centered around substance abuse (in particular amphetamines,) and led to horrifying low points including an alleged suicide attempt in a cave. One issue that existed for Turner was sorting out all the information and discerning truth from fiction: Cash was a master storyteller, and events in his own life may not have always been immune from that trait, as over the years accounts of various events changed or were possibly embellished. Turner is very candid about that, and when uncertainty exists about an event, he always explains how the recollections of Cash (or occasionally others) differed over the years, and even between his biographies. With the passage of time people's memories fade, and when viewing fifty years of musical and personal history in retrospect, confusion is sure to exist on some points. I liked the way Turner reported the latest and most likely versions of stories, but when recollections or earlier accounts differed, he provided the reader with the other information as well.

The book emphasizes the importance of Christianity to Cash, and elaborates at length on the enigmatic co-existence of such a naturally rebellious man and his religious beliefs. Also of great interest are the musical partnerships and feuds Cash had over the years with greats such as Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, Bono, and Rick Rubin. Of course the book delves deeply into the personal relationships in the life of Cash, and especially emphasized the importance of June Carter Cash and his family.

Of the books I have read about Johnny Cash, this is my favorite: Steve Turner has masterfully balanced the professional and personal, and includes all the conflict and triumphs of the one and only Man in Black. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of music, and particularly country music.

We sure do miss you, Johnny. Music's just not the same since you've been gone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Johnny Cash, one of my life's companions.
This book is magic, Johnny knew his time was up as June showed the lead by ascending the way into Heaven for the Man in Black. I have read as many things about JC as I could find and this book seems to top my treasure trove. I have 500 songs of Johnny and still cry and laugh at them, but they are in my spirit, my soul connection to Johnny. I first heard him in 1955 and last heard him today as he sang through my itunes playlist. "I keep a close watch on this heart of mine, I keep my eyes wide open all the time, I keep my hands out for the ties that bind, because you're mine, I WALK THE LINE. I have an Amazon parrot, two years old, a great singer and whistler. I play and sing Johnny to him and he's picking some up; He's my son in green with a yellow head. I have an ipod on all day with speakers and the bird loves the show as do I. Johnny is one of the main stars; As he said, I'll meet you in heaven some day, I saw him twice in concert, once in the 3rd row in Madison Square Garden's smaller venue. A thrill of my life.
I hope the powerful ones will not take offense at my scribbling a few words in John's memory...
A tear flows down my cheek. Luckily I'll see him in Heaven some day. I'm 66.
You will love this book. Please buy it to reawaken memories and to learn new revelations. We will not see his like again on earth, but when you get to Heaven check out the Heavenly choir. You'll see Johnny next to Elvis, June, Carl Perkins, Waylon Jennings, Roy Orbison, Patsy Cline and of couse, Hank Williams, and many more. Let's have a sing-a-long. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars RAYMOND EDWARDS
THIS IS NOT A BOOK BY ITSELF BUT SHORT STORIES WHICH I DO NOT LIKE

4-0 out of 5 stars Good - but predictable
I like Louis L'Amour. His descriptions and conversations are top notch. However, his plots are predictable so I really am grading this on a curve.

I am also rating the audio version of this book which is interesting because it is told by Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and Johnny Cash. It was quite enjoyable to hear the four of these men work together - they were all quite good, especially Kristofferson and Nelson. This audio edition has features that most don't, including special effects and a music soundtrack that was sometimes reminescent of Clint Eastwood's Spaghetti Westerns and sometimes reminescent of "Silverado." The inclusion of the special effects did speed the plot along (you don't have to describe that people are knocking on the door or riding horses, etc.) but sometimes they are distracting (one scene in particular had an overly loud clock ticking over the top of everyone's voices).

5-0 out of 5 stars Three Really Great Short Stories
This set contains two now out of print audio books:"Four CardDraw" and "The Turkey Feather Riders."All three are welldone with a great cast of characters and special effects. The audio iscrisp and clear, easily heard in an automobile's noisy environment.

FourCard Draw.Louis L'Amour starts this audio volume with a short discourseon period books about the old west."Four Card Draw" is toldfirst person by Allen Ring, a gambler who wins the Red Rock Ranch inArizona. He is told the ranch is haunted by someone who was murderedthere. That someone was one of the three Haslet brothers, owners of aneighboring ranch, who are out for revenge.Allen walks right into themiddle of a frying pan and ends up fighting for his life!

Riding For TheBrand.Jed Asberry wins a poker game only to find himself robbed by theangry losers. They dump him in the desert with no clothes, left to die. Days later, on his last legs, he stumbles across three recently killedpeople (two men and a woman)... in the middle of the desert.Takingclothes, guns, and papers from one of the men, Jed becomes Micheal Latch. Micheal was on his way to inherit a ranch, so Jed decides to assume thisrole. He finds himself up to his neck in serious shooting trouble assomeone else is willing to murder to get the property!

The Turkey FeatherRiders.Louis L'Amour starts this story by giving a short discourse oncowboys and the cattle business as it was in the 1860's through 1880's (andnow).Jim Sandefer is the forman for a New Mexico ranch. His boss, GreyBowen, makes a sudden visit (after years of being away) with his daughter,Elaine, and some new guests:Rose and Lee Martin.Grey wants to marryRose, but Jim discovers that she and her son are up to something thatdoesn't smell right! Then the shooting begins!

Well worth the purchaseprice.Run Time: 180 minutes. ... Read more
