Extraordinary
I'm a Kubrick nut.If you're also a Kubrick nut, you will find NAPOLEON endlessly fascinating -- the literary equivalent of an ten-course meal at a five-star restaurant at the best restaurant you could ever possibly formulate in your imagination.Despite its cost, this publication does not disappoint.And what's fascinating to me is that -- despite NAPOLEON's comprehensiveness, from a "macro" standpoint -- a studious reader garners true, unbridled insight into the quotidian methodology of Kubrick's wholly astringent sensibility.This is thanks to the exhaustively collected (and beautifully reproduced) letters and memos (both from and to Stanley) and -- even more significantly -- the "hand-written annotations" that appear, throughout the material, in Kubrick's own hand.Particularly given the time-frame during which the bulk of this material was created -- in the immediate aftermath, for the most part, of 2001 -- it's fascinating to witness the means by which Stanley was leveraging his success (to ostensibly actuate his dream project), and the extent to which his reach occasionally (and ultimately) exceeded his grasp.Kubrick's insight into the workings of the Hollywood studio system is also on evidence; viz., there's a full draft of the NAPOLEON screenplay included, but the script's (somewhat schematic) side-stepping of the contemplated scope of the more ambitiously contemplated battlefield-centric production sequences (for example : Wellington appears, in the climactic clash, but has nary a line of dialogue) subtly suggests Kubrick's savvy insofar as making the project as financially palatable as possible to Hollywood's powers-that-be.As mentioned by other reviewers, the ancillary "costuming," "production design," and other magnificently-reproduced photographic volumes add immesurably to the experience.I spent a full weekend plumbing this thing, and it was a weekend well spent (and one I look forward to undertaking again, at some point in the future) (as with future viewings of Kubrick's masterpieces).

Great Idea, Pity most of the world can't afford to own it
What a wonderful idea, after watching the wonderful Doco on Stanleys boxes, I was interested to buy this..... pity I will never be able to afford something so amazing...cheers for that Kubrick foundation.

A rather insane volume containing a great story
Ten books inside this massive green behemoth tell and illustrate the story of how Kubrick attempted to make this period epic for MGM right after 2001: A Space Odyssey.But a cash crunch in Hollywood at the end of the 60's, 2001's not-blockbuster numbers, and a flop from DiLaurentis called Waterlloo convinced MGM to pull out. The production was shelved, stored by Kubrick on his farm, where it sat until recently. Finally his estate has decided to revive this treasure trove of research, scriptwriting, costume planning and location scouting to a small monument of books filled with terrific historical text, photos of archived notes and correspondence, photographs, production details and techniques, and the final script. Best Books Are Sometimes In Small Bottles!
Michael, you are such a great guy! Beautiful book. And he says he'd not be a good critic of films: gee, he makes want to search my dusty dvd of Eyes Wide Shut and give it a extra try. I love Kubrick, he is the reason I started liking art films but I did think that EWS was a strange movie (I don't know, it's like something is missing, though all Kubrick elements are there). I think that every Kubrick hater should read this book before start slandering. Herr doesn't even avoid some jabs on Kubrick shortcomings and he is shows complete honesty and respect for the man.

Well Observed and Honest
It is hard to say what people expect of any book about Stanley Kubrick, much less a memoir.The film genius was eccentric and monkish -- perhaps necessarily so to be able to accomplish his exhaustively meditated film products, delivered with an attention to detail and nuance that would make most men insane.Then if you got close enough to respect what was really at work with the guy, people accuse you of worship.Herr's book-length essay has received such unfair treatment.

The little book is well-observed and candid.You get Kubrick in dashes and glimpses, but when you get him you're there.Herr has appreciation both for the pressures and realities of the film industry, and the necessary space Kubrick needed to survive in it.Truth be told, doubtless very few people ever got close to the elusive but essentially cordial directer.Eccentricity is not the same thing as lunacy and Herr makes that clear, and stands up for a world in which geniuses have the space they need to do their work and, yes, occasionally fail as all men do.While terse, when Herr hits he hits deeply, and his record of his encounter is not one that can be easily forgotten.

Michael Herr writes so good but too short.however i give this one 5 stars just because i never would have read about Kubrick if not for michael herr.this book might get you interested in a brilliant film maker as well as his films.

A sketch of Kubrick's personality, nothing more
Most books on Kubrick analyse his movies, rather than recount how he was. Michael Herr seemingly knew Kubrick well, so those who seeksome traits of personality of the great filmmaker should be satisfied. But don't expect much. Herr mostly talked to Kubrick on the phone (or, rather - Kubrick talked to Herr).

Definitely the best anthology on the master to date.
After reading this compilation of texts about the late-great filmmaker Stanley Kubrick, I got the feeling I knew more than before about the master. PERSPECTIVES is filled with details about his films and about theway he worked as an artist. It is an important contribution to Kubrickstudies. This anthology edited by Falsetto covers the first period (i.e.from his second film KILLER'S KISS) all the way to his (next) to lastproduction (the incredible war flick FULL METAL JACKET). It even includesan article by Kubrick himself, as well as a piece wrote by Anthony Burgesson Kubrick's adaptation of his famous novel A CLOCKWORK ORANGE. Overall, Iwould recommend this book to anyone interested to know more about Kubrick'swork or about cinema in general. It is a must-read for any Kubrickaficionados and, as far as I know, the only serious compilation of writingsabout this true genius of cinema. By far one of the best book on the masterto date. Let's hope that the author or the publisher will reprint it in apaperback format, so that more people will have access to it. ... Read more

Glad to see this back and in such fine form.
It's a pleasure to see this book back in print. Although Ciment's analysis is a little heavy on the semiotic side, he does an interesting job of illuminating the various thematic threads in Kubrick's work. Profusely illustrated, the book juxtaposes various stills to show the recurrance of visual motifs in each and every one of Kubrick's films (though he manages to miss my absolute favorite -- the imaculate bathroom).There are roughly two essays in the book, one dealing with Kubrick the modernist and the other on Kubrick's use of the fantastic.However, the real gems of this tome are the various interviews, three conducted with the man himself (four if you count a Q&A conducted by mail) following the releases of Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon and The Shining. Somehow the author got Stan to open up in a way, that I've never seen him do in any other interview (the exception being the one for Playboy in '68).This edition also contains some fine interviews, some recently added, with Ken Adam, Jack Nicholson, Malcolm McDowell, Diane Johnson and Marisa Berenson.There is an added chapter on Eyes Wide Shut (which in part explains why it took him so long to do the film) and a memorial essay which gives a fine and tender goodbye to a great director and good friend. ...
