Product Description
Bringing together new and critically informed essays about one of the most controversial films ever made, this collection of writings examines the literary origins of the work, the nature of cinematic violence, questions of gender and the film's treatment of sexuality, as well as the difficulties of adapting an invented language ("nadsat") for the screen. The volume also includes two contemporary and conflicting reviews by Roger Hughes and Pauline Kael, a detailed glossary of "nadsat" and reproductions of stills from the film. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This is not the book by Anthony Burgess...
Made the same mistake as the previous reviewer.I thought this was the actual book, and it is not.I'm sure, if you want to read an in-depth analysis of Stanley Kubrick and his making of the movie that was a translation of the book, that this is a fine piece of work.It is, however, not the actual book itself.Spent $9.99 on the wrong book...

1-0 out of 5 stars This is not A Clockwork Orange
I was under the influence that this was A Clockwork Orange; however it is not by the time my kindle downloaded it, it was to late to cancel.
What I did get was an extremely short essay. Even if I knew what I was buying the shear lack of content would not be worth the $15. ... Read more

The films of Stanley Kubrick have left an indelible mark on the history of American cinema. This text explores the auteur's legacy, specifically positioning his body of work within the context of cultural theory. A single chapter is devoted to each of Kubrick's seven films: Lolita, Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, and Eyes Wide Shut. Particular attention is paid to the role of love and death in Kubrick's films, emphasizing his innovative exploration of love and sex, and the portrayal of mortality via masculine violence. ... Way back in the 1990s, there was a really fantastic USENET newsgroup devoted to the films of Stanley Kubrick. As we all know, USENET was ultimately destroyed by an influx of spammers and individuals without the same commitment to sharing and learning knowledge as the original group.

Still, much excellent material on Stanley Kubrick was produced in that newsgroup in those days. This FAQ gathers the best of that material, and places it in a question and answer format. If there is something you want to know about Stanley Kubrick and his masterworks, you will most likely find it here! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the screenplay
All right. I bought this thinking it was the screenplay illustrated with stills from the movie. It is not. It is a transcription of the finished film with many stills to tell the action. It's printed in black and white. Still a book worth picking up, but if you wanted the screenplay, this isn't it.

I suppose books like this were done in lieu of home video, so people who'd seen the movie could enjoy the story and images and remember it. Coupled with the soundtrack album and a little imagination, the movie could be re-created in your mind.

Augh, this is an awful review... ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I love Kubrick, but wouldn't recommend this book...
My understanding is that this is book is a textbook.I feel sorry for the people who have to wade through it.It's painful. The author attributes a significant amount of thought to various themes/concepts, but I found it way overboard.

This is the first book I've read which analyzes films/books in this manner, but the over-analysis of everything sucks the life/joy out of the process of analysis.

If you're someone who enjoys thinking about/discussing movie thematics with friends/family, I don't see you enjoying this book. There are a few interesting nuggets here and there, but the tone of the book comes off as pretentious dribble.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovers of Kubrick, This is the book for you!
This book is meant to be a complete breakdown of the themes, styles and subject matter of some of Stanley Kubricks best films, and it succeeds on every level. For anyone who has been confused as to what messages Kubrick was trying to convey to his audience, this is the book for you. It describes in detail every message, every detail about how someone should go about viewing any and all of Stanley Kubrick's greatest films. This is a great reference for anyone who has ever questioned Kubrick's style as a director. It also bring into light the ideals Kubrick wanted his audience to see through his films, the main one being "humanity and the world that we live in." If anyone is a fan of Stanley Kubrick's films, his life or film in general than I suggest you get this book! ... Read more

Product Description
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (commonly known asDr. Strangelove) is a 1964 American British black comedy film directed by Stanley Kubrick, starring Peter Sellers and George C. Scott, and featuring Sterling Hayden, Keenan Wynn and Slim Pickens. Loosely based on Peter George's Cold War thriller novel Red Alert (aka Two Hours to Doom), Dr. Strangelove satirized the nuclear scare. The story concerns an unhinged US Air Force general who orders a first strike nuclear attack on the Soviet Union, and follows the President of the United States, his advisors, the Joint Chiefs of Staff and a Royal Air Force (RAF) officer as they try to recall the bombers to prevent a nuclear apocalypse, as well as the crew of one B-52 as they attempt to deliver their payload. In 1989, the United States Library of Congress deemed the film "culturally significant" and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry. It was listed as number three on AFI's 100 Years... 100 Laughs. ... Read more

Excerpt: 2001: A Space Odyssey (occasionally referred to as simply 2001) is a 1968 epic science fiction film directed by Stanley Kubrick released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and written by Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke. The film deals with thematic elements of human evolution, technology, artificial intelligence, and extraterrestrial life, and is notable for its scientific realism, pioneering special effects, ambiguous imagery that is open-ended to a point approaching surrealism, sound in place of traditional narrative techniques, and minimal use of dialogue. The film has a memorable soundtrackthe result of the association that Kubrick made between the rotary motion of the satellites and the dancers of waltzes, which led him to use the The Blue Danube waltz by Johann Strauss II, and the famous symphonic poem Also sprach Zarathustra by Richard Strauss, to portray the philosophical evolution of Man theorized in Nietzsche's homonymous work. Despite initially receiving mixed reviews, 2001: A Space Odyssey is today recognized by many critics and audiences as one of the greatest films ever made; the 2002 Sight & Sound poll of critics ranked it among the top ten films of all time. It was nominated for four Academy Awards, and received one for visual effects. In 1991, it was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the United States Library of Cong...http://booksllc.net/?id=23941708 ... Read more

Excerpt: Stanley Kubrick (July 26, 1928 March 7, 1999) was an American film director, writer, producer, and photographer, who lived in England during most of the last four decades of his career. Kubrick was noted for the scrupulous care with which he chose his subjects, his slow method of working, the variety of genres he worked in, his technical perfectionism and his reclusiveness about his films and personal life. He worked far beyond the confines of the Hollywood system, maintaining almost complete artistic control and making movies according to the whims and time constraints of no one but himself, but with the rare advantage of big-studio financial support for all his endeavors. Oscar nominated on several occasions as screenwriter and director, his only personal win was for the special effects in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Kubrick is widely acknowledged as one of the most accomplished, innovative and influential filmmakers in the history of cinema. He directed a number of highly acclaimed and often controversial films that have often been perceived as a reflection of his obsessive and perfectionist nature. His films are characterized by a formal visual style and meticulous attention to detail his later films often have elements of surrealism and expressionism eschewing structured linear narrative. While often viewed as expressing an ironic pessimism, a few critics feel his films contain a cautious optimism when viewed more carefully. His works are noted as some of the "most original, provocative, and visionary motion pictures ever made". Stanley Kubrick was a Look magazine photographer when he caught himself in the mirror of Rosemary Williams, a showgirl, in 1949.
