Product Description
There is a new trend afoot, one that goes against the prevailing Western model, influenced by the values and principles of international commerce. Presented here are five "signs of life," showcased by this network of movements best referred to as "new friars."God's kingdom in the hands of the people of God, the contributors to this book show us, is first and foremost incarnational, which leads necessarily to gospel witness that is devotional, communal, missional and marginal. With a survey of the history of new friar movements and commentary by forerunner, this seminal book, edited by Scott A. Bessenecker, paints a picture of mission that is new only because it has been neglected for so long, a mission that is truly good news to the people in its path. With contributions from Viv Grigg, Craig and Nayhouy Greenfield, Derek Engdahl, Jean-Luc Krieg, Chris Heuertz, Darren Prince, Jose Penate Aceves, John Hayes and Ash Barker, this book brings together a chorus of voices at the front lines of what God is doing through the new friar community. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Utterly Inspiring
I went to a conservative evangelical seminary where the Scriptures are taught faithfully. However, I still remember the shock I experienced when during one Church History Class we were told that the ministers who most often went into the slums of cities were Catholic priests. They were the ones who went to the poorest of the poor and sickest of the sick and ministered. Protestants liked to have congregations who were able to hear and appreciate the preached word. Protestant's tended to minister in the middle class areas. Preaching is good and right. But we need to also be the hands of Christ, and this is why I come away from readings books like Living mission: The Vision and Voices of New Friars wrestling with a whole host of emotions including admiration, excitement, shame and conviction.

The New Monasticism movement is about reaching out with both the gospel and the love of Christ through physical presence and real practical help, in other words, mission. Do not misunderstand - this is not unthinking social action. The various authors in this book are clearly deep thinkers of scripture - people who have meditated on the word of God; have heard the call of God; and have acted, giving their lives completely to the service of Jesus - giving up all else to follow him. We say that we live in a Global society - this is a book about Global mission which begins right on our door steps.

These are not super-christians, or super-humans but each of the authors are on the front line and the cutting edge of mission, passionate and committed. It's not glamorous and exotic; it's serious, hard, powerful and Kingdom centered.

My hope is that you will read this book. You will probably feel uncomfortable with some of this book, but then you will also be challenged - challenged to re-think what mission is. Which is a good thing.

Highly Recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Restaurant Financial Basics
I have read a few titles in regard to restauarnt management and start up to fine tune my restaurant management know how to better my odds at this cut throat industry. After going thorugh this book, it gave some really good insight, and more importantly knowing the numbers really helped provide substance for the strategy and management mantra from other reading. This is more like a textbook, so it is not for everyone, but for what the authors set out to achieve - Restaurant Finacial Basic it is pretty spot on.
To improve, I will suggest some simple but intersting case study to supplement, this will really engage the reader and tied up the teaching in the book nicely.

3-0 out of 5 stars Boring
This book is like a textbook, not very interesting, but informative nonetheless. If you want a good reference on the topic, this is it.However, I would not recommend it to anyone who is not already familiar with the basics of accounting.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lou and Liz -- Face her Past
THE BODY OF DAVID HAYES by Ridley Pearson has it's moments, but some of the moments confuse the reader and kill the suspense. Liz had an affair with a computer wizard who bilked her bank for millions when she returned to Lou Bolt and their marriage.
David Hayes is released from prison to fall into the hands of those who will do anything to claim the missing money. Liz must decide to protect her marriage, her husband and the bank by playing a game close to the edge.
This is a read that bounces from fun to flat to fun again.
Nash Black, author of QUALIFYING LAPS.

3-0 out of 5 stars a good read
This was a good read and typical of Pearson and Lou Bolt.It was well worth reading and it was enjoyable.
The mystery reader will enjoy it.

J. Robert Ewbank author "John Wesley, Natural Man, and the 'Isms'"

5-0 out of 5 stars If He's Dead, Where is the Body?
Seattle Homicide Detective Lou Boldt is back in his ninth Ridley Pearson thriller and he's called to the assault of an old friend, BCI officer Danny Foreman. BCI stands for Bureau of Criminal Investigation, sort of Washington State's version of a local FBI. Foreman had been drugged and beaten and he tells Boldt that David Hayes is getting out of jail soon.

Years ago Hayes stole seventeen million dollars from the bank where Lou's wife Liz is an executive. He also had an affair with her and that's hard for Lou to handle. The money was never recovered and it was a black mark on Foreman's career. Lou suspects Foreman of going after Hayes, but does he want to clear up an old case or does he want the money for himself.

And there is a mean as nails Russian Mafia boss who is after Hayes as well, because it was his money that was stolen. And everybody seems to be after Lou's wife, because the money is apparently still in the bank's system, but only Hayes with his special software can get at it to wire it out and he needs Liz to gain access to the computer. So does the Russian Mafia guy. Then all of a sudden Hayes goes missing, leaving only a bloody crime scene in his wake. It looks like he's been killed, but there is no body. But someone is still after Liz. What gives?

This is a nonstop, action packed thriller that won't let you go till you're finished. Mr. Pearson has given new life to Lt. Lou Boldt by showing us his personal and very human side. I just can't praise this book enough.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed
I'll make this very short and sweet. The only reason I finished this book is because I love the Lou Boldt series and didn't want to skip over even one.If this had been a stand alone book, there's no way I would have kept going with it.This has got to be one of the the most boring, tedious books I've ever tried to get through.I feel like Ridley Pearson didn't really have his heart in this one.I know, I know, not all books are going to be wonderful and even our favorite authors miss sometimes, but this book, in my opinion wasn't worth the time at all.Hopefully, his next Lou Boldt/Daphne Matthews novel will be much better. And, I don't think that focusing this book on Liz Boldt was a great idea. The idea of having the plot involve Liz's former lover, David Hayes initially sounded pretty good but just fell flat on its face early on.The David Hayes character wasn't even hardly in it. Oh, and what's up with the title anyway?Better luck next time Ridley.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book sucked big time
After reading a couple of Pearson's books, I was looking forward to this one that was received as a gift. Oh, what a disappointment. If I wanted to read some chick lit, I'd have grabbed one of the Whatshername Plum books. I lost count of 'feelings' conversations in BoDH. Gag me, already. The book was padded as hell with overly long, boring dialog. Like many of today's authors of action/thriller/mystery, this is another example of throwing in girl junk into a novel in an attempt to sell books to that demographic. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Historical curiosity from 1919
I knew when I bought this that it was from 1919 and that it is unsafe to use its canning instructions.

HOWEVER, the publication date has been removed and an unknowing reader may think the instructions are safe to follow. The 1919 canning methods detailed in this book are from before the days of pressure cookers and can result in death by botulism poisoning.

In addition, the formatting has not been cleaned up for the Kindle:lots of blank lines and the text has hard line breaks so it doesn't reflow--the lines are too long even for the smallest font size.

Buy only as a historical curiosity recognizing that it's poorly formatted. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
(Thebooks I publish are always proof read and corrected before publishing on Kindle! David Snode)

The subject of this little book is of general interest to
people who are acquainted with things Chinese. The dragon
has played a large part in Chinese thought through four
thousand and more years. Even in these days of the re'-
public it still fills an important place in Chinese life.

The dragon is one of the most common ornamental
designs in China and one meets it wherever one goes in this
country. However, in spite of the significance attached to
the dragon, very little has ever been written concerning it
in either Chinese or English. Only a few general articles
on this subject have been published in magazines, and the
references to it in books are very brief. No independent
study of the dragon in book form has been made in either
of these two languages until now.

Perhaps the last word on the Chinese dragon is not yet
said, nevertheless it is safe to say that this treatise is as
complete as our present knowledge will permit. This little
volume should be of value to all who are interested in China.

This account of the dragon will not only be of value to
foreigners, but it will also be such to Chinese. The author
has made this study a hobby for many years and the result
of his research is a splendid contribution to the literature
on China. It would be a good idea for more people to take
up the study of other phases of Chinese life in the same
way and thus help to interpret China to the West.

This book is not intended primarily for sinologues and
it contains no Chinese characters. The volume is written
for the average reader, who in his study of things Chinese,
has little time to go to original sources. Most people do
not wish to be burdened with long quotations to prove
abstract hypotheses or to have Chinese characters inserted
in the text repeatedly to break the sequence.

Contains many illustrations.

Text has been checked and corrected for spelling errors.
