Product Description
Actress Jessica Lange’s career spans more than 30 years and 30 films; the winner of two Academy awards, the one-time waitress is one of the most acclaimed performers of both the screen and the stage, as well as one of the most recognizable faces. 50 Photographs, however, finds Lange on the other side of the camera. Originally drawn to the medium simply as a way to document the lives and growth of her children, Lange has now been photographing on and off for 15 years, approaching the art as an antidote to the constant fervor of Hollywood. "It is a way of working," she says of her process, "that is the opposite of acting. Photography doesn’t depend on collaboration; it can be solitary and private." A 2007 feature in Aperture, introduced by Mary Ellen Mark, gave the world its first taste of Lange’s visual work; now, 50 Photographs gathers her impressive portfolio, featuring images from Mexico, Africa, Romania, Russia, Finland, Italy, and France as well as the U.S., into her first-ever photography monograph. Alternately comforting and disquieting, Lange’s striking black-and-whites possess a kind of moody mystery that is appropriately cinematic. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Artist's Sensibility
Jessica Lange, one of this country's most daring, sensitive and subtle actresses, is first and foremost an artist's artist. In keeping with her ability to find the micro corners of the characters she explores and brings to life on stage and screen Lange approaches her intuitive vision and observations of the world in a similar manner in an important hobby - photography.Begun as a means to document the growth of her family Lange has extended her interest in observing the human phenomenon and the neglected spaces on the planet in her decision to carry her camera to the various locations throughout the world, gathering these fifty photographs here published without the usual ballyhoo that accompanies a 'star's project'.

Lange elects to use a fast film and prefers available light as opposed to the staginess of flash and reflectors so important in her acting episodes. And in selecting this combination of factors she is able to capture dramatic moments which ring of melancholy, privacy, solitude, and acts that appear spontaneous and quite without audience. All of the photographs in this moody monograph are in black and white and each of the fifty selections is beautifully composed and respectfully frozen in time by an artist whose hallmark has always been understatement.

Multiple viewings of this collection of works only serve to solidify Jessica Lange's importance as an artist of the camera. There is so much more in this series of quiet images that a single glance can retain. This is a beautiful body of work by a very gifted artist.Grady Harp, May 09

5-0 out of 5 stars 50 Photographs - Jessica Lange
What a remarkable and visually captivating collections of black and white photography! The technical quality and personal esthetic are bold and conscious. The result is a quiet, breathtaking social commentary; light and shadow insist that we look...and then we look again. In her other work, Lange demonstrateas her ability to carry, simultaneously, more than one emotion at a time. 50 Photograpghs left me longing to bare more. One comes face to face with the convolution of our humanity as it lies just beyond the vigilant gargoylian bulldog's underbite.Ultimately, it is the resolute dignity and love of subject that pulls one inside the pages.

4-0 out of 5 stars Jessica is more than a movie star
I bought this book as a gift for my son for Christmas.I had to go through the entire book, to see Jessica's incredible photography.Any one that is a Jessica Lange fan would love to have this book. Or any one that loves B'W photo's.

1-0 out of 5 stars So?
Sorry to say,but I think she should stick to her day job. There is nothing especially special about her work.If it wasn't her name ,I doubt if this book would sellmany copies.Check out the work of Jeff Bridges or Sammy Davis Jr. or Roddy MacDowellinstead.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Very Talented Ms. Lange
Jessica Lange is a national treasure. Her progressive politics, her considerable acting talent and now this -- an absolutely gorgeous book of photographs. She is not afraid of depicting loneliness (a universal human feeling) or displaying her melancholy through these exquisite photographs. All 50 of them are gems. Like herself, this book is a treasure. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Lange biography is messy and inaccurate
There is no doubt that after a startling career rebirth in 1982 and an artistic career that spans 20 years and over 25 films, two-time Academy Award winner Jessica Lange deserves attention in a book. However abiography of the actress' life and career (no matter how badly written)seems a bit premature. The actress, after all, is still working in filmand on stage. This book embarassingly focuses on her career since theone-two punch of "Tootsie" & "Frances" in 1982 andvaguely pieces together information about her parents, siblings andchildren. The information is obviously carelessly gleaned from articlesand interviews the actress gave to "Esquire", "RollingStone", "Vanity Fair" and "Life" magazines, so tosay that the author actually wrote this book is a stretch at best. Careerhighlights are inaccurately reported concerning "steam" on theset of "The Postman Always Rings Twice" with Jack Nicholson andwhen the author does not have an article about the actress to plagirize, hefills in the gaps with inaccurate and obviously unauthorized informationconcerning Lange's feelings, character, opinion and craft.Showered with afew pictures from Lange's Cloquet high school yearbook and still other poorstills from her movies, the book stops at her work on 1986's "Crimes OfThe Heart" with Sissy Spaceck and Diane Keaton.Lange has gone on towin another Oscar ,performed on Broadway and received an Emmy awardnomination since that time. There's no wonder the book is out of print. The actress' mysterious reclusivity and brilliant work has kept audiencesat arm's length and at the same time intrigued. If those intriguiedaudiences want a true glimpse of Lange's thought-provoking life and work, they should find a copy of The Actor's Studio interview from January of1997, in which Lange herself muses about life, love and being one oftoday's leading motion picture actresses. ... Product Description
King Kong is a 1976 American motion picture produced by Dino De Laurentiis and directed by John Guillermin. It is a remake of the 1933 classic King Kong, about how a giant ape is captured and imported to New York City for exhibition. The remake's screenplay was written by Lorenzo Semple Jr., based on the original movie story written by Merian C. Cooper and Edgar Wallace, which had been adapted into the 1933 screenplay by James Ashmore Creelman and Ruth Rose. It starred Jeff Bridges, Charles Grodin, and Jessica Lange, in her first movie role, playing a part similar to the one made famous in the original by Fay Wray. ... Read more

Excerpt: Jessica Phyllis Lange (born April 20, 1949) is an American stage and screen actress. With a career that has spanned thirty-five years and six Academy Award nominations (including two wins), she may be most notable for her performances in Frances, Tootsie, Sweet Dreams, Blue Sky, and Grey Gardens. Lange, the third of four children, was born in Cloquet, Minnesota, the daughter of Dorothy Florence (née Sahlman) and Albert John Lange, who was a teacher and salesman. Her maternal grandparents were of Finnish descent, while her paternal grandparents were German and Dutch. She studied art briefly at the University of Minnesota before going to Paris, France, where she studied mime with Étienne Decroux. She returned to New York City, New York in 1973 and took acting lessons while working as a waitress and a fashion model for the Wilhelmina Models agency. She was discovered by the fashion illustrator Antonio in 1974. In 1976, Dino De Laurentiis cast her in his motion picture remake of King Kong, which started and almost ended her career. Although the King Kong remake was a top moneymaker for Paramount Pictures, critics were not kind to the film and Lange did not appear in another film for three years, when Bob Fosse cast her as the glamorous figure of death in All That Jazz (1979). The unfavorable reviews were devastating but critics took notice with her impressive turn in Bob Rafelson's remake of The Postman Always Rings Twice (1981). Her performance in her next film, Frances (1982), in which she portrayed actress Frances Farmer, was highly lauded and earned her a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Act...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=67763 ...
