The most significant improvement is the use of full colour throughout the work which brings a new clarity to the photographs and harbour plans. 4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting read into the life of the man.
Lawrence Martin did an excellent job of portraying Chretien's life, including both positives and negatives. In addition to describing his drive and ambition, his fight for the 'little guy', and his years as Trudeau's firefighter, Martin also delivers Chretien's derelict youth, his occasional forays into questionable Quebec politics, and his sensitivity to criticism of his abilities.

This book ends just as Jean Chretien was poised to win the leadership of the federal Liberal party of Canada.

4-0 out of 5 stars Exciting andinsightful...
Whether you liked or disliked Jean Chretien as a politician, this book will provide an insightful look at the man behind the politician. Martin has provided the views and perspectives of friend and foe. It is easy to read, light yet intriguing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Chretien

5-0 out of 5 stars THE book on Soviet hockey
There are some cases where you only need to read one book to know all there is to know. This is one of those cases.Martin writes thoughtfully and sensitively across decades that changed the world, and his readers come away with their feet firmly planted on the ground, whereas previously theywere swimming in the air with all the hearsay that bloomed from themysticism that was Soviet hockey. This book should be worth 10stars.

Martin's key point is that in the years previous to WW2, theSoviets played a brand of "Russian hockey," which was somewhatlike field hockey on skates. In a monumental move, they then decided todrop this beloved game of theirs, and focus on what they actually called"Canadian hockey," whichwas the game as the rest of the worldplays it.In a brilliant discussion, Lawrence describes how the Soviethockey that grew out of this blended the best aspects of both games toproduce something very special. This book is about more than just a sport. It is about how one aspect of a nation illustrated and paralleled thewhole as it sought success in all the avenues that a world power couldparticipate in, flawed as it was from the inside.

If one does wants toread further, I would recommend 'Road to Olympus,' by Anatoli Tarasov. Tarasov was the father of Soviet hockey, and his book, also no longer inprint, makes a good mirror to Lawrence's masterpiece, written as it wasfrom the other side of the pond.As well, Ken Dryden'ssemi autobiography'The Game,' has an equally brilliant hypothesis on "the secret"of the Soviet's success. ... This is a fabulous book for hockey fans of all ages and even for non-hockey fans just interested in some Soviet history. The book details what it was like for a Harvard-educated young man to find himself in the midst of the Cold War.It is fascinating to learn about how the Soviets trained and the difficult environment that they lived in.The book truly makes one appreciate living here as we see how difficult it was for the author to live in the Soviet Union. The book is easy to read and very funny in places.I highly recommend it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Author's comments
I am the author, and will offer a few words about the book."We Can't Kill Your Mother!" is for the general reader -- no special background or medical expertise necessary. These stories take the reader inside the medical intensive care unit, a major part of every acute care hospital. That's the setting, but the subject is people and their serious (and sometimes strange) afflictions.

The first chapter gives an overview of intensive care rounds and how the MICU operates.Succeeding chapters are devoted to one or two patients and the challenges they present.Like Harold Switek, too ill to leave MICU, too psychotic to stay. And Willie the Yellow Man, whose love affair with alcohol exceeded anything you've ever seen. You'll meet a young socialite hospitalized with rapid onset of total paralysis and wonder -- will she ever hug her kids again? And another woman about to have her baby during a terrifying asthma attack. Then there's the young accountant who slept in a coma -- for six months!Another story relates the strange saga of a man who claimed to be coughing up blood, only that wasn't his real problem.

Every sizable hospital handles the same problems and encounters the same ethical dilemmas as presented by our patients.Like the nursing home patient who is the subject of the title story; she is awake and alert, but can only live connected to a breathing machine. Her daughter demands that the ventilator be disconnected so "mother can die."Can doctors honor such a request? Can they ignore it?

The book contains 23 chapters or "stories"; many of the stories were previously published in magazines. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars disappointing
This book has excellent pictures and tables, however it lacks in depth and substance. For example, in the atopic dermatitis section, there is no discussion on differential diagnosis/other clinical conditions to consider. The drug allergy chapter has a nice chart for drug desensitization, but the chapter lacks a good discussion on any of the most important drugs...IE the PCN drug section is skimpy at best. And for some reason, they don't even have devoted chapter on food allergy.Overall, I am disappointed with this book. This book is best applicable to medical students and residents. In my opinion, it will not fit the need of Allergy/Asthma/Immunology fellows or practicing staff. I highly recommend "Pediatric Allergy" (also from Mosby) which is an excellent resource for Pediatric Allergy. Patterson's Allergic diseases is also good reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for all passionate about Asthma
