Product Description

Heath Ledger was one of the most charismatic actors of his generation. After establishing a high-profile Hollywood career at the age of 21 with the lead in A Knight’s Tale, Ledger pursued a series of increasingly diverse, often subversive roles that belied his image as a teen idol. Edgier films such as Monster’s Ball gave tantalizing hints of his talent, but it wasn’t until Brokeback Mountain that he proved beyond question the full extent of his abilities. His sudden death rocked the film industry and threw a poignant shadow over the body of work that has now become his legacy. Here, Brian J. Robb explores Ledger’s relationships with actresses Michelle Williams, Naomi Watts, and Heather Graham, recounts the making of Brokeback Mountain and the film’s impact, and charts Ledger’s increasingly troubled state of mind. Heath Ledger: Hollywood's Dark Star paints a memorable portrait of a compelling and intense young man whose loss will be felt for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully done
I purchased this book two years ago just after it came out and it was a beautiful read with stunning photography. It was emotional to look through as I am a huge Heath Ledger fan.One of Hollywood's greatest and terribly missed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Such a talented actor; and so sad
I think this book is very good, but I do think that much more info will be available in the coming years.
Heath was (oh, how I hate to say "was")! one of the best actors to come along for a very long time. When think of all the conceited, no-talent peacocks around today, it makes his ill-fated passing even more unfair and sad.
Heath's (and Jake's) performance in Brokeback Mountain is so wrenching (like the film itself) it breaks your heart. Of course, that so-called rotten "Academy" denied him, the film and other nominations it rec'd the awards it definitely should have won.(Of the 8 nomiminations it rec'd, it won only three!! This is just unbelievable. That stupid rotten "academy").
I wish I could find a way to end this review; just can't think what would have been ahead for Heath.Damn it - why didn't that maid and the other one wake him up??

3-0 out of 5 stars Review of Robb's Heath Ledger Biography
What is praiseworthy of the book is that the author, in trying to sum up a life cut short, does not sound convoluted. Robb does a good job of remaining objective over Heath Ledger's life, including the mystery that will forever shroud his untimely death. There are plenty of photographs and some interesting tidbits about his early aspirations of acting starting in his homeland, adding to the captured charm of Ledger, which sadly no longer exists.

What I wish I had known before reading this book is how limited it feels after rapidly finishing it. As the book's back cover states, the author's intent was to tell "the full story." The book feels like simply a compilation of magazine quotes. Most journalists and biographers interested in recounting the full story are not likely to have great access to every aspect of Ledger's life. Compiling magazine quotes does not really do the job of presenting the full story, only the story that Ledger was willing to present through interviews. Then again, maybe the objective of this biography's full story was for the author to only use what Ledger said and left behind, as oppose to something rather trite and twisted.

Overall, the book deserves about three stars because, while the author does a good job of repackaging material from several magazine interviews with the now legendary Heath Ledger, generally there seems to be something missing. In comparison with the reviews of other Ledger biographies rolled out as of 2008, this might be the best out there. However, it will take some time for this story of Heath Ledger to feel as complete as Ledger himself.

5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC
This is quite an amazing biography. It's just so wonderful, so informative and providing. There's tons of great quotes from Heath himself and you feel like you get to know him a little bit just from the read. I'd recommend this book to anyone. In complete honesty I opened it up, started reading it, and finished it in one night. It's just incredibly addicting. You'll love it. We miss you Heath. You were great man.

4-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
I bought this book for a friend who is a huge Ledger fan.She is enjoying the book and the pictures that were illustrated.

It's a great book in showcasing photos and discussing Heath's life and legacy. He will always be remembered as one of the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heath Ledger the Illustrated Biography
As we know that anytime a famous person dies there is a rush of people who want to write about their lives. What you usually get are half truths and lies that don't have any basis in fact.

This book is completely different. Not only is it filled with wonderful photos from Heath Ledger's films and from the publicity shots as well, but there was many insightful passages that contained some info that I had not known before.

There are some minor inconsistencies, but they did not deter me from enjoying this book very much.I would highly recommend this book,it truly does pay tribute to this wonderful actor and human being who left this life too soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tribute to a great actor
This is a wonderful pictorial book on the work of Heath Ledger. With photos of his films. reviews, comments and leagcy. In his short life he managed to make his mark from Brokeback Mountain to The Dark Knight. His work is dedicated to his craft and always taking risks in whatever he did.
To lose such a talent is heartbreaking when you think of all the work he could have done in years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book about Heath Ledger if your a fan.............
This book has a lot of great pictures of Heath and this book is a must and a keepsake for Heath Ledger fans. I bought it for my son as a christmas present and he really loves it and I am a Heath Ledger fan as well, I have to make sure he takes care of this book because I really like it as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lovely tribute
This is a beautiful book, filled with striking photos of the late Heath Ledger...the first few times I went through it, I felt a sadness wash over me...we only have images of him now....still hard to accept his death....the book chronicles his life and how he lived in the moment, not the past or the future...he accomplished so much in his 28 years, and this book is a perfect testament to that... ... Product Description
Heath Ledger was a superstar on the world stage, a gorgeous guy, a true romantic, a man who was dedicated to his craft and who loved a laugh. This is the definitive look at the real life of Heath Ledger from childhood to fully-fledged stardom, with exclusive personal insights from his family and friends. It is also very much an Australian story about the beginning of a legend.Even before Heath achieved fame and fortune, the Ledgers were well-known in their hometown of Perth. Heath's great-grandfather, Sir Frank, was a pioneer of West Australian business, and he nurtured a warm, loving family. Heath's childhood was idyllic and happy, and he excelled at school, especially drama. When he was just 17 years old, he drove across the country to Sydney, determined to follow his passion for acting. He quickly became a celebrity but never forgot his roots. But behind Heath's journey to Hollywood, turmoil split the family. The book reveals how Sir Frank's fortune was lost, which thrust the Ledgers into bitter dispute. With Heath's death have emerged new allegations about the star's hidden millions.Sadly, while Heath's death came as a surprise to the public, those who knew him best were aware of his problems. And those who knew him best were also aware of the allegations that he had fathered a child before his rise to fame. Respected journalist Janet Fife-Yeomans has worked extensively with Heath's uncles to produce this family's story, their reminiscences of Heath a way of paying tribute to his all too short life. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Nothing more than a rehash of the crap in the news.
There is nothing new in this book. It is quite evident that Heath's family was not involved with the writing of this book. As far as I can tell, there is nothing in this book that has not been in print already. Usually in the gossip columns, and has been soundly refuted.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst biography ever
This biography claims to be a "family's tale", but it is evident from the first chapter that no close members of Heath's family has been involved in this book. A chapter involved in digging up the dirt on the Ledger's family rift which is obviously nothing to do with Heath and information provided by the estranged uncles confirms this. All the information regarding Heath has been obtained from interviews he gave during his life - hardly new information, from his estranged relatives or from school teachers.
This is badly written - as demonstrated by the paragraph on page 83 "A Knight's Tale is the movie where Heath starts to have a real love affair with the camera. While he's dancing to 'Golden Years', there's one scene where he turns and stares right into the lens. Mesmerising."
No Janet - just utter bull.
Do not buy this book - it is not worth the paper it is written on.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Heath Ledger Fans!
Simply amazing! A must have for every Heath Ledger Fan! Highly recommended! The book is informative and gives its reader an accurate look into the life of a great actor, Heath Ledger; his life, his loves, and his career.

1-0 out of 5 stars Returning it to bookstore.
I was perusing the sales section in a bookstore when I found this book.Bought it and started reading it.And then I went online and read some reviews and discovered that the author had no reason to use the phrase "A family's tale" in the title of this book... mainly because Heath's close family and friends have issued at least one public statement distancing themselves from this book/author.

I respect Heath too much to read just anything from any ol' bogus source.I will be taking this book back to the bookstore for a refund.I wish authors like these would refrain from using famous faces and names like Heath's solely to cash in and make a quick buck.

1-0 out of 5 stars I smell an opportunist
Wow. I was doing a little online shopping and ran into this. How immensely sad that others continue to profit off the tragedy of others. The title alone is clearly deceptive. "A Family's Tale"-what?? I don't see any immediate family identified as sources. Clearly, unfounded allegations by estranged family members does not qualify as credible information. I don't know when this book was originally written but the accounts of these uncles have been proven self-serving, disrespectful and outright liable. The only motive I can see from this is as old as mankind, greed. It is beyond my comprehension how and why these books continue to be published.

A call to all writers out there- I would love to see a book, published with the blessing of this talented man's parents, highlighting his artistic accomplishments in both acting and directing. I also understand he was quite the photographer and a passionate, often annonymous, humanitarian. That is a book I would buy.

If I want gossip, unfounded accusations and bitter scandal I can buy a tabloid at a lot cheaper price and don't have some smug writer laughing all the way to the bank thinking she has passed off lies as a serious piece of journalism. ... Read more

Product Description

Heath Ledger’s tragic death cut short a career that seemed headed for the very highest level of stardom. Ledger’s easygoing charisma and powerful, understated acting formed a unique combination that seemed destined to shine for many years to come. His groundbreaking performance in Brokeback Mountain led to roles as diverse as the title role in Casanova, Bob Dylan in I’m Not There, the Joker in The Dark Knight, and one of the four "Tonys" in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. More great performances would doubtless have followed, were it not for the actor’s tragic death in January 2008.

HEATH WAVE!

Heath Ledger may come from the land Down Under, but he's taking Hollywood by storm! After starting out in local musical theater, this talented hottie left his hometown, Perth, and headed to Sydney to forge a career in television and film. Success came easily in Australia, with Heath landing roles in the TV drama Sweat, as well as some Aussie films.

Then, at 17 and with less than a dollar in his pocket, the precocious actor decided to try his luck in Los Angeles. He gained instant recognition starring opposite Julia Stiles in 10 Things I Hate About You, but the critical acclaim poured in after he nearly stole the show from Mel Gibson in The Patriot. And the rest has been Hollywood history. With lead roles in the eagerly anticipated films A Knight's Tale and The Four Feathers, Heath's career is on fire!

Now, read all about Heath: his family life, his hobbies, his attitude toward show business, and more. In The Heath Is On, you'll get all the info on this up-and-coming young star: gossip, anecdotes, horoscope, vital stats -- it's all in here! The Heath is definitely on! ... Read more

I loved this book.

It was a little hard for me to read, but I finally made it.

The pics were hot.He's a hottie.Dang!

The reason I gave it only 4 stars is because there were no nude pictures included.Dang.

Anywhoo, I loved it.

I love YOU Heath.
Heath, if you're reading this, I just want you to know that I'd do anything (ANYTHING) for you... wink, wink...

Peace out.

I loved this book.It gave a lot of cool fact's and even had tests and quizes inside. Plus very cool pics of Heath. I definitely would recomend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Pictures Were the Best Part
I got this book because I really like Heath Ledger. The sad thing is that this is just another one of those teen-idols books. It does give a lot of good information and has great pictures, but it could have been better. If you like Heath, I think you should buy it, but you can only take the quiz in the back so many times. I would recommend since you can take it places where you can't watch 10 Things I Hate About You or A Night's Tale. This is a good book, but the pictures really were the best part.

Product Description

With his huge charisma, vast talent, and smoldering looks lighting up the screen, Heath Ledger quickly became a Hollywood A-list following his debut in the 1999 teen film 10 Things I Hate About You. But it was his award-winning and controversial role as Ennis Del Mar in Brokeback Mountain that cemented Ledger’s place in the pantheon of acting greats. He was one of the youngest actors to ever to be nominated for an Oscar, and it was on the set of Brokeback that he fell in love with his costar Michelle Williams, with whom he had a daughter in 2005. With the world at his feet and a star role in the new Batman movie—The Dark Knight—in the can, there was worldwide shock and disbelief following his sudden death in his New York apartment on January 22, 2008. Prescription drugs—found next to his body—were thought to be the cause, but mystery surrounded the circumstances. Was it an accidental death? Or were the pressures of life in the spotlight too great to bear? This is the tragic story of the brilliant actor whose light shone so brightly, but all too briefly, upon the world.

1-0 out of 5 stars I'd give it negative if I could.
This book was put up for "pre-order" on Amazon less than 2 weeks after Heath's tragic passing. At that time, his final medical examiner's report had not even been released. That should tell you right there the kind of cr*p that it's spewing: the rumors, innuendo and speculation that the gossip columns dragged out from 2006 and earlier, youthful indiscretions that he had long put behind him and grown past, and which did not represent who he was. These rumors and gossip were disputed and proven incorrect, not to mention being technically libelous.

At the time of his loss, Heath was looking forward to so much.He was sober, responsible, focused and so excited about branching out in new directions.Although he had battled insomnia his entire life, according to the medical examiner's report, Heath was being responsible with his medications. The report states: "LEDGER HAD TAKEN ONLY THE PRESCRIBED THERAPEUTIC DOSES OR LESS OF HIS PRESCRIPTIONS." (ABC News)

Mixing the wrong prescriptions is a horrible tragedy that happens to over 100,000 people in the U.S. every year. Not much could make the loss of such a beautiful soul more tragic, except the vultures who jumped to ruin his reputation, hurt those who loved him, and exploit inaccurate gossip for profit.

I was fortunate to have some small contact with Heath as we knew of each other through mutual acquaintances. I still sometimes sit down at the computer and wish I'd find a message. . . Those who love him will never stop mourning the loss of someone who was so good, such a light in the lives of all he touched, and more brilliant than anyone ever realized. It hurts that so many cannot understand that about him.

If you are searching for answers, or trying to know Heath better, this is not the book you want. This book is so inaccurate, it would be laughable if it did not tarnish the legacy of a genuinely kind and gentle man who had a heart of gold.

5-0 out of 5 stars Health's story was beautiful and a very sad one too
Health's story was a very touching one to me, from the very beginging untill the very end. He touched many lives when he was around, and he lefted behind his legacy in his daughter Matilda. Health was one of my favorite actors and I too will miss him. Everyone should read this book, if not than another like it. His story is amazing

1-0 out of 5 stars I definitely do NOT recommend this book

I am a huge Heath Ledger fan, but I would not recommend any fan to buy this book. In fact, I would recommend against it as it is clearly meant to exploit his death.

Here are my reasons:

1) It goes off on so many tangents, it feels like a high schooler writing a 500-word essay whose scrambling to fill the requirements. There are literally pages and pages on topics that are only tangentially Heath-related. For example, Heath was born in Perth, so the author gives a two page-synopsis of how the city of Perth was discovered. How does knowing the history of Perth help me learn more about Heath Ledger? The author does this repeatedly in the book on topics such as Perth, Heath's grammar school, The Hospital in which he was born, his various co-stars, etc. To provide another example, there is a chapter that one would assume is going to discuss "the Patriot", a movie of Heath's. Instead of talking about the movie, the author starts the chapter with 2 pages about Mel Gibson's life and career, before even discussing the movie. I understand Mel was the star of the movie, but the book is supposed to be about HEATH, not MEL. I had to remind myself this is a book about HEATH because the author changes gears so many times throughout it. This appears to be a poorly edited book written quickly to capitalize on Heath's untimely, tragic death.

2) Factual errors issues. I am not talking about "rumors" that some could argue about, I mean actual FACTUAL errors that anyone could answer by doing research. Heath's best friend's name is Trevor DiCarlo, the author calls him Tom in the book. There are quite a few examples of this. If the author can't even get the name of Heath's best friend right, how are we to trust any other facts in this book?

3)Although I had seen all of Heath's movies, he spoils many of the plotlines for those who haven't seen them. Furthermore, he made one minor plotline in one of the movies sound larger than it was.

4) Not a single person was interviewed for this book. Every quote that was in there was clearly available to anyone who owns a computer and could look up Heath themselves.

5) Typos. Enough said.

6) Last, but not least. The handling of Heath's death in this book feels like it was written by the National Enquirer. He exploits every rumor about Heath and has no issue with bringing up facts that were never confirmed. At times, he brings up ones that have CLEARLY been refuted evidentially with no mention of the new evidence. For example, initial reports said "pills were strewn" but the NYC Police Commissioner made a public TV interview saying that was absolutely NOT true. The author is perpetuating a rumor that was PROVEN to be NOT true.Had he done his research properly, he would have learned that many of those initial rumors were proven to be false.

Any true Heath fan is better off not buying this book as it was clearly written to capitalize on his death.

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless Reguritation
If you've read the articles and/or on line interviews or clicked around on youtube, there is nothing new here whatsoever. It is a reprint basically of everything already in print. Some sections, if the quotes were similar in two different interviews, the author repeats the same story and redunant quotes, as if we didn't just learn this 5 seconds ago in the previous paragraph. Poor editing and thoughtless. This author did not interview anyone for this book. There are no first hand accounts of anything. Rumors printed in the press are repeated here with no basis for fact or further investigation given to them. There are no insights into who was Heath Ledger. No gained understanding of the man. Anyone with the internet could have written this book and slammed it out in a few weeks."Mysterious death"? Gee what a compelling and misleading title. There's no mystery. The man accidentally OD'd and anyone with a TV or magazine knows this and no new information is presented here. This book is exploitive, opportunistic and pathetic. ... Read more
