Product Description
Rev. Jason Lee and his party left Independence, on the Missouri frontier, on the last day of April 1834. They traveled with a band of trappers and traders, numbering about two hundred men. In this book are fascinating excerpts from the journals and diaries of Rev. Lee and others who traversed the Oregon Trail with him, relating their observations of the new land and its peoples. It was the beginning of a lifelong endeavor to establish mission stations in what would later become major settlements in the Pacific Northwest: Salem, the Dalles, Astoria, Oregon City, and Nisqually on Puget Sound. This book tells the story of western settlement from the perspective of the missionaries -- who bravely preceded most other settlers -- thus offering a unique view of the history of the Oregon Territory. Included are essays about Generals Lewis and Clark; the establishment of Forts Vancouver and Walla Walla; life on the Oregon Trail; the emigration movement; formation of government; the coming of Christian women to Oregon; Drs. Whitman and Spalding; the Ashburton Treaty; and resources and development of "Oregon, the Old and the New", including Washington, Idaho, Montana, British Columbia, and the discovery, purchase, extent, wealth, and climatic conditions of Alaska. ... Excerpt: Terrence Steven "Steve" McQueen (March 24, 1930 November 7, 1980) was an American movie actor nicknamed "The King of Cool." His "anti-hero" persona, which he developed at the height of the Vietnam counterculture, made him one of the top box-office draws of the 1960s and 1970s. McQueen received an Academy Award nomination for his role in The Sand Pebbles. His other popular films include The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, The Thomas Crown Affair, Bullitt, The Getaway, Papillon, and The Towering Inferno. In 1974 he became the highest paid movie star in the world. Although McQueen was combative with directors and producers, his popularity put him in high demand and enabled him to command large salaries. He was an avid racer of both motorcycles and cars. While he studied acting, he supported himself partly by competing in weekend motorcycle races and bought his first motorcycle with his winnings. He is recognized for performing many of his own stunts, especially the majority of the stunt driving during the high-speed chase scene in Bullitt. McQueen also designed and patented a bucket seat and transbrake for race cars. McQueen was born Terrence Steven McQueen in Beech Grove, Indiana, a suburb of Indianapolis, in Marion County. His father, William, a stunt pilot for a barnstorming flying circus, abandoned McQueen and his mother when McQueen was six months old. His mother, Julian, was a young, rebellious alcoholic. WHY JESUS CAME TO THIS WORLD

In the beginning, before the world was made, the Lord Jesus lived in heaven. He lived in that happy place with God. Then God made the world. He told the hills to come up out of the earth, and the seas to run down into the deep places which He had made for them. He made the grass, the trees, and all the pretty flowers. He put the sun, the moon, and the stars in the sky. He filled the water with swimming fish, the air with flying birds, and the dry land with walking and creeping animals. And then He said, 'Let _Us_ make man.' Who were meant by 'Us'? Who was with God when He made the world? It was Jesus. The Bible says:

'THE WORD (that means Jesus) WAS WITH GOD, AND THE WORD WAS GOD. THE SAME WAS IN THE BEGINNING WITH GOD. ALL THINGS WERE MADE BY HIM.'

So after He had made everything else, God made a man, and named him Adam. God put Adam into the beautiful Garden of Eden, and at first he was good and very happy. God also made a woman, named Eve, to be his wife, and to help him to take care of the garden. All the fruit in the garden, except what grew on one tree, was given to Adam and Eve to eat; all the animals were their servants; and God was their Friend.

A wicked angel, who had been turned out of heaven, saw how happy Adam and Eve were, and he was angry, and thought, 'I will make them as bad and unhappy as I am; I will make them do what God has told them not to do. Then he will turn them out of Eden, and they and their children will be my servants for ever, and I shall be king of the world.'

So the wicked angel, whose name was Satan, came into Eden. He got Adam and Eve to take the fruit which God had told them not to eat, and God had to send them out of the beautiful garden; for God had said He would punish Adam and Eve if they took that fruit, and God always keeps His word.

But God went on loving Adam and Eve even when He knew that He must punish them, and He tried to make them good in this way. He thought, 'I will send My dear Son down to the earth. He shall become a little child, and grow up to be a man, and shall die for the sins of the world.'

THE STUDY OF THE GOSPELS

If one thing more than another marks modern thought, it is a new insistence on fact. In every sphere of study there is a growing emphasis on verification. Where a generation ago a case seemed to be closed, to-day in the light of new facts it is reopened. Matters that to our grandfathers were trivialities, to be summarily dismissed, are seriously studied. Again and again we find the most fruitful avenues opened to us by questions that another age might have laughed out of a hearing; to-day they suggest investigation of facts insufficiently known, and of the difficult connexions between them. In psychology and in medicine the results of this new tendency are evident in all sorts of ways--new methods in the treatment of the sick, new inquiries as to the origin of diseases and the possibilities of their prevention, attempts to get at the relations between the soul and body, and a very new open-mindedness as to the spiritual nature and its working and experiences. In other fields of learning it is the same.

To the modern student of man and his history the old easy way of excluding religion as an absurdity, the light prediction of its speedy, or at least its eventual, disappearance from the field of human life, and other dogmatisms of the like kind, are almost unintelligible. We realize that religion in some form is a natural working of the human spirit, and, whatever place we give to religion in the conduct of our own lives, as students of history we reckon with the religious instinct as a factor of the highest import, and we give to religious systems and organizations--above all, to religious teachers and leaders--a more sympathetic and a profounder study. Carlyle's lecture on Muhammad, in his course on "Heroes and Hero Worship," may be taken as a landmark for English people in this new treatment history.

This is a new translation of the only extant Greek epic poem to bridge the gap between Homer and late antiquity. A major critical re-evaluation of the poem is now under way among classicists and scholars in the field of comparative literature. This volume offers the first scholarly translation into English for many years, combining readability with accuracy and an attention to detail that will be helpful to readers both with and without Greek. The explanatory notes and accompanying maps provide all necessary background information to enjoy the poem, while a comprehensive introductory essay situates the poem in its cultural and historical context. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS NOT THE COMPLETE EPIC!!!!!!
I teach a classics in translation course at the University of Washington and I have had a few students who buy this edition of "Jason and the Golden Fleece" through Amazon.com.While I have no problem with the translation,I do have a problem with the fact that this edition does not state clearly that it is an abridged version of the epic.It is essentially books 2 and 3 of the four book epic.If you are buying this to read Apollonius' epic then get a different version like the Oxford World Classics version which is complete. You can find this much better edition under: Jason and the Golden Fleece: (The Argonautica) (Oxford World's Classics). Please be aware that this Penguin version is ONLY books 2 and 3 of Apollonius' epic.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Student Perspective
As a classical studies major, I have a great appreciation for classical epics.Familiar with Greek and Latin, and having read several translations of Vergil and Homer, I was rather disappointed with this edition.

Apollonius's Argonautica is the most complete version of the myth, and deserves a more poignant translation than this Oxford World's Classic.Changing the epic from poetry to prose definately does not do this tale justice.Apollonius, an Alexandrian scholar, is already complex enough, but to have a translation that fails to capture the full aspect of the myth makes it even more confusing.

It's one redeeming quality, however, is a very useful map of Jason's voyage, as well as fairly complete set of notes. The notes refer mainly to allusions to myths, however, and it would have been nice if they had more on the Homeric references found throughout the epic.

Overall, for a translation, it's not the best, and it is fairly confusing to read.Still, until someone comes out with a better translation (hopefully retaining the poetic format), this will just have to do.

3-0 out of 5 stars Prose rendering of an important epic
I don't approve of poems being translated into prose form as a matter of principle. In the case of this poem, which has so many features derived from Homer (e. g. Apollonius' hero list as compared to Homer's ship list or the description of Jason's shield after that of Achilles'), it would be even more interesting to have a line-by-line rendering. Were it not for this and Mr. Hunter's translation would be just nice as his clear and useful introduction is. Therefore I have to go for another translation which suits my requirements, I guess Peter Green's. By the way, this same problem unfortunately seems to occur in the Loeb Classical Collection translations of poetry. ... Read more

Product Description

Like an old-fashioned hymn sung in rounds, Something's Rising gives a stirring voice to the lives, culture, and determination of the people fighting the destructive practice of mountaintop removal in the coalfields of central Appalachia. Each person's story, unique and unfiltered, articulates the hardship of living in these majestic mountains amid the daily desecration of the land by the coal industry because of America's insistence on cheap energy. Developed as an alternative to strip mining, mountaintop removal mining consists of blasting away the tops of mountains, dumping waste into the valleys, and retrieving the exposed coal. This process buries streams, pollutes wells and waterways, and alters fragile ecologies in the region. The people who live, work, and raise families in central Appalachia face not only the physical destruction of their land but also the loss of their culture and health in a society dominated by the consequences of mountaintop removal. Included here are oral histories from Jean Ritchie, "the mother of folk," who doesn't let her eighty-six years slow down her fighting spirit; Judy Bonds, a tough-talking coal-miner's daughter; Kathy Mattea, the beloved country singer who believes cooperation is the key to winning the battle; Jack Spadaro, the heroic whistle-blower who has risked everything to share his insider knowledge of federal mining agencies; Larry Bush, who doesn't back down even when speeding coal trucks are used to intimidate him; Denise Giardina, a celebrated writer who ran for governor to bring attention to the issue; and many more. The book features both well-known activists and people rarely in the media. Each oral history is prefaced with a biographical essay that vividly establishes the interview settings and the subjects' connections to their region. Written and edited by native sons of the mountains, this compelling book captures a fever-pitch moment in the movement against mountaintop removal. Silas House and Jason Howard are experts on the history of resistance in Appalachia, the legacy of exploitation of the region's natural resources, and area's unique culture and landscape. This lyrical and informative text provides a critical perspective on a powerful industry. The cumulative effect of these stories is stunning and powerful. Something's Rising will long stand as a testament to the social and ecological consequences of energy at any cost and will be especially welcomed by readers of Appalachian studies, environmental science, and by all who value the mountain's majesty -- our national heritage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rape of a landscape and a culture . . .
This is a great work of oral history and environmental literature not from academics or outside observers but rather from the people on the receiving end of a raw deal.Coal is big money for capital but a curse for labor.Appalachia contains some of the poorest zip codes in the United States, and yet billions of dollars in natural resources have been harvested from these very counties. This short book attempts to explain some of the reasons why this is so.And this is nothing new.Ballad singer Addie Graham saw it first hand decades ago:

"You don't know the wealth that went out of that country. It'd kill you to know of it.When the big companies came in they bought all the timber in that country, all through it . . . .All that walnut timber, millions of dollars worth, went out of there. The wealth that was in that country, they never got nothing much for it; it went too cheap"

What happened with timber and other natural resources happened with coal, and it continues to this day.Wealth goes out and the people stay poor and despised, the butt of jokes in the 'liberal' media.

The thirteen activists and artists portrayed here and the the editors of this book attempt to redress this imbalance.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best I have read
Somethings' Rising is one of the best books I have read about the genocide going on in Appalachia. This area has been used, abused and ignored by America and with the help of this book and others out there like it, America can face the awful truth and help right the wrong done to Appalachians.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Voice For the Mountains
Being a huge fan of House's work, I bought this book at the lecture series "Evening With the Mountainkeepers."Not only was I able to meet Silas House and co-author Jason Howard, but they autographed my book. I was also privileged to hear them read an excerpt from this important books.

Mountaintop coal removal is a controversial topic, especially in Appalachia. On one hand, the practice supplies much needed jobs for the residents of mining towns; on the other, this practice destroys natural wildlife habitats, leaving deep scars upon the land.

This book contains the personal stories of 13 residents of the Appalachian region and gives you a representation of their views and opinions.I think this is an important book, not only for the understanding of mountaintop removal, but also for learning about the cultures of Appalachia.

5-0 out of 5 stars Something's Rising: Appalachians Fighting Mountaintop Removal by Silas House and Jason Howard
This book, a book about grass roots struggle against big coal and the devastation of the Appalachian mountains, is an important book. It is a book of beautifully written stories, full of imagery. I can see eighty-six-year-old Jean Ritchie's eyes in the rich descriptions and almost hear her sing. These descriptions make me want to sit at her feet, hear her voice and her wisdom. All the people in the book are portrayed as real people I'd like to meet, their stories so compelling, their voices sincere. But most of all, though, this book makes me heartsick for a way of life that has been, not lost, but stolen or sold, it inspires me to join this fight against the ravages of coal.
Coal has done little for the people of Appalachia but make us poor, use our land and our people badly, and destroy the mountains with which we identify. Something's Rising is a cry for justice, for a way of life, a warning for the people of Appalachia and America to wake up before it is too late, before our mountains are gone, our streams polluted beyond reclamation. It should be required reading, not in every history, geography and science class in high school and college, but for every legislator in this country, every man or woman who was elected on claims he or she represents "the people."

5-0 out of 5 stars Voices Rising from Appalachia in Protest to Devastation of the Land
The voices rising in this fine and essential collection gathered by novelist Silas House and journalist Jason Howard each sings his or her own song of the people and land protesting the violence being done to it by Energy companies and their practice of mountaintop removal...strip mining with a vengeance.
I would almost call this a "chorus" of voices, except it is clear that each voice is candid and has its own character and song. Country singer Kathy Mattea, for example, comes across with characteristic wit and passion in a call for "A Light in the Dark." Her "Coal" CD or Jean Ritchie's "Black Waters" or "Now Is the Cool of the Day" songs in which she cries out in a beautiful plaintive voice might be played while reading this book of Appalachians. Environmental engineer Jack Spadaro makes the case clear: "We've destroyed a million and a half acres in the past thirty years with mountaintop removal. It's gong on at an accelerated rate now. It's not just destroying the land; it's destroying a whole people. It's destroying a culture. It's destroying towns. It's destroying the most diverse forest outside the tropics in the world. This is the Mother Forest for North America." Spadaro laments the way the United Mine Workers of America and the Mine Safety and Health Administration have become complicit in this devastation of a culture and a land. He was fired by the Bush administration for making such a stand. As Silas House and Jason Howard make clear in the introduction, Appalachians must stand up on their own against this practice which ultimately robs jobs and land.
Each speaker is given a well written profile introduction, and each provides an interview statement of their life and involvement.
