Product Description
Based on the best-selling novel and with screenplay by James McBride, Miracle at St. Anna is a visually monumental film about a group of Buffalo soldiers who find themselves behind enemy lines in Italy during World War II. Filmed mostly in lush Tuscan countryside, with cinematography by Matthew Libatique (Requiem for a Dream) and still photography by David Lee (Malcolm X, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) these 100 plus images capture the magic and intensity of this story about redemption and triumph over the bleakest of experiences. Including costume designs, storyboard sketches, text by the director himself, a full script book, and archival material from the second World War, Miracle at St. Anna: The Motion Picture, is not only a visual tribute to this epic, but also to the countless African American soldiers who risked their lives for a country in which they were treated with less respect than the enemy they were fighting. ... Product Description
Kaleem Aftab's authorised biography of Lee chronicles his film work in definitive detail, but also explores the many social issues and controversies that the work has addressed and generated; also the inspirational affect Lee has had upon his own and subsequent generations of black film-makers (he gave Halle Berry her first break, and early lead roles to Denzel Washington and Samuel Jackson). Every one of Lee's films has tackled a subject and caused a stir: from female sexuality in She's Gotta Have It to New York race riots in Do the Right Thing and jazz in Mo' Better Blues; interracial sex in Jungle Fever; revolutionary pan-Africanism in Malcolm X; the 'War on Drugs' in Clockers; Louis Farrakhan's 'Million Man March' in Get on the Bus; black poverty and pro-basketball in He Got Game...As such Lee has made himself a spokesman on US race relations, but he is also an entrepreneur and a provocateur. This biography, prepared with Lee's co-operation and with input from his friends, family and collaborators, tells the extraordinary life story of a true American original. ... Read more

Product Description
Through research spanning four centuries, in genres as diverse as English Renaissance drama, abolitionist literature, gothic horror and contemporary romance, Celia Daileader questions why Anglo-American culture's most widely-read canonical narratives of inter-racial sex feature a black male and a white female. This study considers the cultural obsession with Shakespeare's Othello, alongside the more pertinent issue of white male sexual predation upon black females.Daileader argues that myths about black male sexual rapacity and the danger of racial "pollution" were exploited to "protect" white female sexuality and exorcise collective guilt. ... This book is a beautifully written analysis of the way entrenched prejudice against blacks is connected to entrenched prejudice against women. Daileader is Professor of English at Florida State University. (I've taken her classes, she's a brilliant teacher.) In addition to this book, she is author of "Eroticism on the Renaissance Stage" (Cambridge UP), co-editor of John Fletcher's "The Tamer Tamed" (Revels Plays, 2006), and co-editor of a new book that isn't out yet, "Women and Others: Perspectives on Race, Gender, and Empire" (Palgrave, 2007). Editorial Review

Product Description
Michael Ray Charles is a painter whose carefully crafted and faux-aged canvases and works on paper draw attention to race relations historically and in contemporary society. Borrowing pop culture images of characters such as Sambo, Buckwheat, and Aunt Jemima, Charles uses them ironically to comment on racial issues. His concerns range from how tobacco and liquor companies target marketing to minorities to the depiction of African Americans in the entertainment and sports industries to concepts of all-American (i.e., white) beauty. This book is the catalog of the first major solo exhibition of Charles' work, staged by Blaffer Gallery, the Art Museum of the University of Houston. It contains a broad range of color images of paintings and works on paper. In addition to the catalog entries, the book contains an interview between exhibit curator Don Bacigalupi, catalog essayist Marilyn Kern-Foxworth, and artist Michael Ray Charles, in which the artist discusses and interprets his work. An essay by writer and cultural historian Marilyn Kern-Foxworth situates Charles' work within contemporary African American culture. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional. Compelling. Heartbreaking. Angry. And great.
I first came across Michael Ray Charles on a documentary about contemporary art (Art:21) and then again in a documentary series called Art City. Of all the artists -- many far better known than Charles -- he was, for me, the most notable. He was a young (30ish) black man, a family man living in a suburb, creating (inventing) these provocative and undeniably powerful and thought-provoking images that at once spoke to the history and horrors of racism in America, and reclaimed the power and moral sense. I purchased this "book" because I collect art books and because I so liked his art and his personality as it was conveyed in the documentaries. I never imagined when I ordered it, that I would be quite this pleased. The "book" is really two books, one a standard-sized catalogue featuring an illuminating interview and analysis of his work. Additionally, there is an oversized heavy-weight periodical (the actual catalogue featuring images) reminiscent of the old Interview magazine. Almost every page is essentially a small poster of one of Charles' works, and there are several cut-outs (dye-cuts), not to mention the inclusion of a Lincoln-head penny pasted on the back, which is a staple from his paintings. The "book" is a work of art unto itself, managing to be at once modern/contemporary and primitive (it actually comes in an oversized white jiffy bag, with an image on the front and sewn shut) and, in my estimation, is highly collectible -- not to mention just a ridiculous amount of fun. There is something to discover on every page (maybe every inch of every page). This might be the best art book I have ever purchased. If I could give this book 10 stars, I would. Michael Ray Charles is an important American artist. Very compelling. ... Read more

Product Description
Faces in the Mirror looks at race and film in American society through the lives of Oscar Micheaux and Spike Lee. Through separated by decades, they faced similar issues and challenges.
* * *
John Howard's Faces in the Mirror: Oscar Micheaux and Spike Lee provides a fresh look at the history of African-American filmmaking in the twentieth century. His engaging exploration of the life stories if the century's two most significant black movie directors chronicles the struggles of African-Americans in the film industry and against Hollywood's traditions of segregation and stereotyping.

Recounting the lives of Micheaux, whose career spanned the period from the silent era through the late 1940s, and Spike Lee, who came of age during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and emerged as one of the most important film directors of recent times, Howard demonstrates that both men, despite their very different experiences, encountered similar circumstances in their efforts to practice their art.

Lee's later work emerges as the heir, at least indirectly, of Micheaux's attempts to forge a black aesthetic that addressed the concerns of the African-American community.

This is a deeply meaningful contribution to the history of African-Americans as well as to the history of American film.
Jill Watts, Professor of History, University of California San Marcos

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read Book About Black Film-makers!
This book by John Howard merits the time and attention of thoughtful, reflective readers--especially those who are interested in films. The book is not only informative in regards to the successes and travails of the earliest of Black film-makers, like Oscar Micheaux, it is also a scholarly and entertaining chronicling of the history of many others who followed those early trail-blazer into today's film markets.Until I read FACES IN THE MIRROR, I was pretty ignorant about what was going on with motion pictures about Black people--many of which were produced during my lifetime. That naivete was dispelled by this book.I am very grateful to John Howard for providing illumination and education that will forever change the way I look at movies that portray African-Americans in character roles, and as principals in stories that purport to represent Black life in our society. This is a MUST READ! ... Product Description

“That’s what this book is about . . . how integration has come to baseball and how it can be achieved in every corner of the land.”—Jackie Robinson

Back in print for the first time since its initial publication in 1964, Baseball Has Done It is an oral history of baseball and racial integration as told by its greatest players to the man who broke the color line, Jackie Robinson. This one-of-a-kind classic features rare and candid interviews conducted by Robinson with ballplayers who played and lived through the first generation of racial integration in baseball. A who’s who of baseball legends—Hank Aaron, Ernie Banks, Roy Campanella, Alvin Dark, Larry Doby, Carl Erskine, Elston Howard, Monte Irvin, Don Newcombe, Frank Robinson and Bill White—share the spotlight with players from the Negro Leagues, baseball executives like Branch Rickey and Ford Frick and Jackie Robinson himself to create a diverse look at the effects of integration on baseball and society. Much more than a sports book, Baseball Has Done It is an important document of the struggle for civil rights in the United States, one that speaks to the past while looking toward the future, with the belief that if baseball has done it—achieve integration—the rest of society can too. As Jackie Robinson said, “The ballplayers who have spoken in these pages have told the truth. They reveal that total integration is the only cure for the disease of hatred which is afflicting our America!”

This first-ever reprint edition will feature an introduction from the Academy Award-winning director Spike Lee as well as a selection of vintage photographs that were specifically selected for this new edition.

The Boombox Project features contemporary fine art portraits of an array of vintage boomboxes, as well as scores of documentary photographs of the people who brought the boombox movement to life back in the day.

Celebrating just more than 20 years since its seminal debut, Do The Right Thing remains one of the most important and controversial films of its era. Employing director Spike Lee's hometown of Brooklyn as the essential setting, this explosive film masterfully explores race and class relationships. Both a critical and popular success, Do The Right Thing became a landmark film that brought serious issues in the African American community to light and established Lee as a major director in American cinema. Lee also wrote the screenplay, produced, and even starred in this deeply personal film, which was applauded for its commanding visuals provided by Danny Aiello  and John Turturro, and an assertive soundtrack featuring Public Enemy's "Fight the Power."

Including an unprecedented insider's look at the film, with behind-the-scenes visuals and interviews, this impressive book celebrates the impact of Do The Right Thing on our culture throughout the years. Product Description
n the Fall of 1999, Wayne Embry was so highly thought of by his peers that he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame as a contributor to the game. In the summer of 1999, the Cleveland Cavaliers thought so little of him that they replaced him as general manager. Now in his new autobiography, "The Inside Game," Embry, who was once sent home from a game in the old Richfield Coliseum when a bullet was found on his seat, tells the inside story of his fall from grace and the part he believes racism played in it. he deals with the unsavory dealings that led to his departure from the Cavs and introduces startling information about one of the most highly regarded coaches in the league. He discusses the social and economic changes affecting the league and other problems threatening to destroy it. What Embry most wants is to provide inspiration not only to those in the sports world, but to those in the worlds of business and education, where he has demonstrated leadership time and time again. His book is part historical perspective, part inside look behind the scenes, part business strategy and part social commentary, all told in a straightforward style sprinkled with humorous anecdotes. It is a virtual guide for how to develop and maintain successful intra-personal relationships. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Trailblazer On And Off The Court
Though published through the regional University of Akron Press, the autobiography of Wayne Embry is essential reading for basketball fans, sports historians and those intrigued on how sports reflects the games played by the power brokers in society.

Embry was a professional player and climbed the corporate ladder in the NBA during eras when the racial divide was felt in locker rooms and in neighborhoods throughout the nation.

Perhaps mostly known nationally as the executive who traded Kareem Abdul-Jabbar - from the Milwaukee Bucks to the Los Angeles Lakers - Embry drew the ire of Cleveland Cavalier fans for the trading of Ron Harper, which is covered in depth.

But it's within the inside game on the hardwood floor of life - that needed the finesse of a swift ball-handling point guard and the sharp elbows of a tough power forward - where Embry ultimately excelled. He did not close the doors of opportunity when he maneuvered into a position to take advantage of a small opening, but has been a trailblazer by leading the way for many others into successful careers in pro basketball and the corporate world.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Compelling Hard-Hitting Read
I just finished this book tonight, and it's one of the best sports autobiographies I've read in ages, and I read most of them. Wayne Embry is a pioneer, and a man that overcame a tremendous amount of racism and adversity in his life to become a power player (GM) of 2 NBA ballclubs.
I have had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Embry in passing at camps, and he was a kind gentleman. I always admired him but never knew all that he went through. To be fair in my review, I must say that in reading the book, he seems at times overly-sensitive in his analysis of some situations, especially those with Cavs ownership, and that he often seems to have felt slighted, when he may have just been a casualty of an underachieving ballclub, and NOT the victim of racism.
Either way, the man is an intellect, and also found success in business as a big-time McDonald's franchisee and sat on the BOD of several Fortune 500 companies, as well as a trustee of his alma mater, Miami of Ohio. A man who has been married to the same woman for almost 50 years. A man of conviction.
I say this for Embry, whether or not you agree or disagree with his views, he pulls no punches. He tells it like it is, and does not sugar coat things in this book. There's nothing worse than shelling out $20 or $30 for a book, and then you get nothing but cliche nonsense, or the same old fuzzy stories you already knew from the sports pages or internet.
This book is a must for old-time/vintage NBA fans or those who wonder what it's like to be a GM of a team. Wayne Embry was not only a physical specimen, but acerebral giant of a man, and this is one helluva read. Kudos, Big Wayne. Regards, James R. Acho, Esq.www.cmda-law.com ... Read more
