1ST TO DIE:In San Francisco newlyweds are being stalked-and slaughtered. Enter four unforgettable women, all friends...Lindsay, a homicide inspector in the city's police department...Claire, a medical examiner...Jill, an assistant D.A....and Cindy, a reporter who has just started working the crime desk of the San Francisco Chronicle. Joining forces, pooling their talents, courage, and brains, they have one goal. To find, trap, and outwit the most diabolical and terrifying killer ever imagined.

2ND CHANCE:2ND CHANCE reconvenes the Women's Murder Club. This time, the murders of two African Americans, a little girl and an old woman, bear all the signs of a serial killer for Lindsay Boxer, newly promoted to lieutenant of San Francisco's homicide squad. But there's an odd detail she finds even more disturbing: both victims were related to city cops. A symbol glimpsed at both murder scenes leads to a racist hate group, but the taunting killer strikes again and again, leaving deliberate clues and eluding the police ever more cleverly. In the meantime, each of the women has a personal stake at risk--and the killer knows who they are.

3RD DEGREE: Detective Lindsay Boxer is jogging along a beautiful San Francisco street when a fiery explosion rips through the neighborhood. A town house owned by an Internet millionaire is immediately engulfed in flames, and when Lindsay plunges inside to search for survivors, she finds three people dead. A mysterious message at the scene leaves Lindsay and the San Francisco Police Department completely baffled. Then a prominent businessman is found murdered under bizarre circumstances, with another mysterious message. Lindsay asks her friends to help her figure out who is committing these murders-and why they are intent on killing someone every three days.Even more terrifying, the killer has targeted one of the four friends who call themselves the Women's Murder Club.Which one will it be?While the investigation rages furiously, Lindsay works very closely with a federal officer assigned to the case. At the same time, she learns that one member of the Women's Murder Club is hiding a secret so dangerous and unbelievable that it could destroy them all.

3-0 out of 5 stars Start of new women-led murder series
1ST TO DIE - 4 stars
The first story in this collection is '1st To Die' which introduces Lindsay Boxer and the Women's Murder Club. Lindsay is a San Francisco homicide Inspector and she has been put on a case where a married couple were killed on the evening of their wedding. Lindsay is partnered with a man from the mayor's office, Chris Raleigh, and on the same day discovers she has an unusual blood disorder which is potentially fatal. Lindsay's energy is directed toward the investigation as well as her health and as she investigates the first murder and another two 'bride and groom' killings she finds herself drawn into a group of other women for support - Cindy Thomas, a reporter; Claire Washburn, a medical examiner; and Jill Bernhardt, an assistant DA.

The book seemed to draw to a conclusion fairly early but then there were several twists which made the story move in new directions. The interactions between Lindsay and Chris Raleigh were well written, as were Lindsay's moments of emotion as she battles her disease and tries to get to the bottom of the murders. However there were some rather cringe-worthy moments when the girls seemed to have to say "I love you" to each other, as well as having to be vastly successful and feisty as well as in touch with their femininity. Those who like to read more about the murder scenes might find this story a disappointment as it seems to be more about Lindsay and her feelings than detective work. I also felt that the 'baddie' seemed rather comic-book bad and his behaviour at the very end of the story was rather implausible. Still I enjoyed the story and this new series of characters.

The narrator of this story did a good job but sometimes her voice became so quiet that it was difficult to hear over road noise when driving and listening, which is probably how many people will hear this story. In order to hear the quiet sections the volume had to be raised rather more than I would like for the louder sections. However this was an excellent audiobook and whiled away a long journey very effectively!

2ND CHANCE - 3 Stars
This is the second story in the series and follows on a couple of months after the shocking conclusion to the previous book. In this story Lindsay Boxer, newly promoted to Lieutenant, finds herself investigating some race hate crimes. She discovers fairly quickly that the crimes are being committed by a person who is part of a specific white group with an identifying tattoo - but it proves very difficult to pin down exactly who he is. When he starts toying with Lindsay and the police department, including killing someone close to her as well as attacking her friends, the stakes are even higher.

There are some additional side-plots in this story, including the return of Lindsay's father into her life, some significant events in Jill Bernhardt's life and a romance for Cindy Thomas. As in the previous book, the Women's Murder Club seems a rather unnecessary plot device where Lindsay talks over the case with her friends.

The writing style in this book felt at times rather clunky. I lost count of the time James Patterson used phrases like "My heart was exploding in my chest" or some other overblown description for Lindsay's excitement or fear. Although the action kept going I found some of the events a little difficult to swallow and I wasn't as gripped by this story as I had been by the previous one in the series.

The reader of this book had a less enjoyable voice than the reader of the previous one with a rather harsh delivery at times. Chapters where the narrator is the murderer were read by a male reader and unfortunately the volume on these chapters was notably quieter so that the volume had to be increased to hear him properly, then reduced again for the female narrator.

3RD DEGREE - 3 Stars
"Familiarity breeds contempt". I was struck by the truth of this saying when listening to the third of the Women's Murder Club audiobooks. Although the murder plot is completely different from that in the previous two books, James Patterson's writing style in this series is really beginning to grate. Once again I was struck by how unrealistic the conversation between the different women is - I mean, I can't think that I've ever gushed that I love various female friends whilst drinking at a bar. Perhaps American women do this but I'm not sure. Anyway, Patterson's writing is getting terribly repetitive in terms of his description of peoples' emotions: "Lindsay's eyes bulged out" (we had several people with bulging eyes in this story - what the heck is it supposed to mean?). Every event that happens is followed by a description of Lindsay's heart beating faster, her hairs on the back of her neck standing on end, her stomach churning, the aforementioned bulging eyes... it just feels like lazy writing.

It's not all lazy writing - in fact Patterson makes a bold plot move in this story which was surprising. However the weaknesses in the previous stories in terms of plot come into play here too - how is it that the vital piece of information is magically found by Lindsay, that her hunches are pretty much always correct, that she is able to put things together that no-one else can? There is a completely farcical point in this story where Lindsay decides to go back to the house that was a murder scene, looks through a cupboard, finds a set of newspaper clippings, reads one thirty-year-old clipping and realises it's the key to the case. I mean, how likely is that?

In some ways this story is reminiscent of the previous one in that long-ago events affect what's happening today. There's also another romance for Lindsay with rather a big cheese (who seemed a bit too good to be true to me). The murder plot is never easy to predict (partly because of the random coincidences that fall into Lindsay's lap) and it was a fairly easy story to listen to but it felt too much like 'murder story by numbers' to me and the completely unrealistic characterisation of the women jarred so badly with me that I found myself sighing in annoyance on many occasions. The final chapter was toe-curlingly cheesy to this British reader's sensibilities - the over-the-top romance side was laughable.

There is some good plotting in here, along with some lazy plotting; there are some exciting scenes, along with some dull ones; there are some interesting characters, unfortunately vastly outweighed by the cardboard ones. However overall this story felt repetitive, unengaging and badly written. I can't see any great reason to follow this series any further.

Patterson shows his true colors. The 3 volume Womens Murder Club is fast moving and well written.Character development grows with each book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Awesome...and yet disappoimting..
Don't get me wrong...the Women's Murder Club series is fantastic...I can't even believe they cancelled the TV show..that's another story. My problem with this item is that the discs skip...almost everyone. It seems like every crucial point in the plot is disrupted by the disc skipping and missing chunks of dialog.
It seems that they are cheaply made. Otherwise I recommend reading this series...it's great! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally...SEP didn't muck up the ending
There are so many SEP stories that I've read that had great content, but SEP tried so hard for a screwball comedy ending, that it just felt too contrived and silly. As I was reading this book and falling in love with the characters and all of their flaws and strengths I kept thinking, "Please don't screw it up...please don't screw it up."And thank goodness, she didn't.It's still SEP, but it also stayed true to the characters as well.Loved the whole thing!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of her best
There have been so many positive reviews written, so I will only say I loved it.It was every bit as good as, if not better than, SEP's Chicago Stars books.I loved Sugar Beth's sass playing opposite Colin's aristocratic Brit attitudes.Their sparring was delicious.
Oh, and I loved her name. It's set deep in Dixie. It's a great name for the location.

Product Description

Sara Elliott has been forced to give up her own dreams to return home to Chicago and take charge of her young sisters and brother. She finds a job and settles into the house where she grew up, building a life for ten-year-old Doug and teenagers Carrie and Abby.

But Sara has another brother. Mack, now twenty, suddenly reappears, cheerful and unconcerned, as if he had never broken his promise to help Sara with the children. With bewildering volatility, Mack swings from kindness to cruelty, affection to hostility, keeping the family on edge, his past and present a mystery. But Mack is winning over the children and sometimes the four of them stand together against Sara.

And then, when she thinks her life has room only for work and family, Sara meets Reuben Lister, a client from New York. As Sara helps him find and furnish a house, they discover a closeness neither has known before. Together, Sara and Reuben find answers to the questions: What is a mother? What is a parent? What is a family?

This is Judith Michael’s most poignant exploration of the pressures and joys facing modern adults and children, in a story that will resonate with everyone for its universal themes and discoveries.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Good
This is the first and probably the last book I will read by Judith Michael. My mother-in-law recommended it and I am not sure why.Anyway, after struggling through 100 or so pages, I flipped to the end and wasn't all surprised that I didn't miss a thing by skipping 75% of it.Not good at all.

1-0 out of 5 stars Narration on sound recording almost as bad as the writing.
I think if I had read this book instead of listening to it, the children would not as come off as petulant little brats. The narrator was over the top, making Sara so very saintly and Mack as nasty as Snidely Whiplash. The only interesting characters were the Corcorans. The plot was flimsy and as many reviewers pointed out there were many holes and unanswered questions. For instance: Do not the authors know that there are more than one airports in New York? So if one is shut down for security reasons, Sara and Ruben could have flown out of another one, or flown out of DC?
To those who did not finish the book, you did not miss much. The last part was mostly filler consisting of preaching. It was like they had to meet their word limit and just didn't want to make the effort to wrap up loose ends, like what happened to Mack.
This is the first Judith Michael book I've read and I don't think I'll take a chance on another one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very bad writing - avoid like the plague
This is the first Judith Michael book I've ever read and I hated it.I was lucky in that I picked it up for 50 cents at a used bookshop, but sorry I invested time reading it.The characters are universally dislikeable, even the kids and the disabled mother. The 'bad guy' in it wasn't much more obnoxious than anyone else in the story. They are all whiny and needy without exception. The ending petered out without tying much of anything up. It felt like it was written by someone who is good at writing steamy, bodice ripping romances but wanted to be taken seriously as a good writer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast Service
The book was new as described.

will not hesitate to use this seller again.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ultimately, just so, so
I've read only a few of the Alex Cross novels, in no particular order, and while "Mary, Mary" contains an intriguing enough story and a clever twist or two, it lacks the consistent energy that fueled other entries in the series. In "Mary, Mary," Alex Cross heads to LA to investigate the murders of A-list Hollywood actresses. Ultimately, the story's criminal action moves rather briskly, but it's the time spent on Cross' personal life, particularly with his family, that slows the novel down. In the prior Cross novel's I've read, Patterson's inclusion of Cross' family provided a good counter to the murder mayhem Cross is surrounded in. However, the family scenes here mostly don't amount to more than Cross expressing his regret for the time his job forces him away from his kids. Patterson has explored this in the novel's I've read, and while it's a worthy facet to the Cross character, it becomes mundane and repetitive in "Mary, Mary." Patterson needs to present Cross' personal conflicts from a new angle if he intends to continue merging Cross' crime-solving exploits with his personal pressures.

Amidst the police tape in L.A., Mary is a mysterious murderess that Patterson writes with vivid detail, but the reader still knows that something is missing. Mary's big secret is a reveal I did not see coming. It makes sense of the gaps clearly present to misguide the reader. The ultimate twist is rather involving and I would have enjoyed it more had Patterson dropped a few more tie-ins during his development of Mary and her crimes.

"Mary, Mary" is not a lost cause, but I wouldn't recommend it be your first venture into the Cross series. Cross classics "Kiss the Girls" and "Along Came a Spider" are better paced and would serve as a better introduction to the character. For the seasoned Cross fans or the casual dabbler like myself, "Mary, Mary" is a quick and enjoyable enough of a story to justify the read, just so long as you don't mind tolerating a little less-than-inspired family moments.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not his best
First of all - I LOVE James Patterson.I love the pace of his novels - the twists and turns - and the fact that his writing style clear and direct. But, I did not LOVE this one.It seemed disjointed and convuluted - like he was juggling too many balls at one time. The surprise ending was good - but by that time, I felt like I had worked a little too hard to follow the story.

3-0 out of 5 stars easy read; surprise ending
This is an average James Patterson book -- better than some, not as good as others.I read it on a 4 1/2 hour flight and it was an easy read.

If you like plot twists and a multiple surprise ending, you will enjoy it very much.If you like detailed clues so you can figure out who done it as you read through the book, this one will leave you frustrated.

The sub-plot involving lead investigator Alex Cross' custody battle with his ex-wife is interesting, but ultimately unsatisfying.

Buy it used and enjoy a good quick read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad... actually good enough
1.I'm the least capable to review Patterson's books in that this is the first one I've read. With that being said, I wasn't expecting much, but overall--> it was entertaining / engaging. Overall, it was definitely good enough for me to read another Patterson book. ... Read more

ASHES TO ASHES

Read by Melissa Leo

A monster known as the Cremator is killing prostitutes in Minneapolis parks and setting their bodies on fire. When one of his victims turns out to be the daughter of a local billionaire, and a homeless teenager claims to have witnessed the burning, it brings together former FBI agent Kate Conlan and the Bureau's top serial-killer profiler, John Quinn. Conlan and Quinn share a painful personal history; now they have to work together against a very smart lunatic who seems to be able to read their minds.Amazon.com Review
Some doctoral candidate is doubtless hard at work as you read this, tryingto explain why and how the serial killer suddenly became every thrillerwriter's favorite subject. Meanwhile, the irrepressible Tami Hoag shows usin her latest sure-to-be-a-bestseller how the theme should be handled--withsensitivity, wit, and enough energy to heat a small city.

This book kept me intrigued all the way through the book i was not bored at all i really didnt want to put the book down when my lunch break was over it was hard to put it down and go back to work!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars ashes to ashes
god, this book will take you for a ride there were times that i had to take a break because the suspense was almost too much to handle, the conflicts of just about all of the characters were real, we all know or have worked with some of these personalities, what a great who done it in the end the real villians was an utter surprise I think i would have loved a little more romance between kate and quinn and wished that their characters past could have revealed more depth to what really happen with kate and quinn, such as how did her daugther died, what happen to that piece of crap husband steve all in all the book was a definitely a page turner

3-0 out of 5 stars It was okay...
Former FBI member Kate Conlan teams up with old flame John Quinn in a grisly case involving a serial killer called the cremator. While I enjoyed the overall premise of the story I thought at times the author tended to restate the same things over and over regarding the personal lives, etc. of the characters, thus causing the novel to lose steam at certain points. I was however, surprised by the identity of the killer. Overall an okay read for a rainy day! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars My heart's still pounding...
Wow, what a heart-racing, action-packed read...the perfect way to escape reality on a cold afternoon!

Charles Friedman, a wealthy and successful hedge fund manager, was on a commuter subway train that was bombed by terrorists near Grand Central Station. He was thought to have been killed and burned in the tragedy. His wife and children accept the inevitable and move on with their lives until terrifying threats and unexplained coincidences cause his wife Karen to doubt everything she new about her husband and other trusted friends and become terrified that he had taken risks that continue to put her and her children in grave danger. Helped by a city detective Ty Hauck, who is dealing with his own personal loss that becomes one of the threads that tie them into a developing relationship, Karen digs more deeply into her husband's papers and files to gradually uncover a terrifying picture of high-stakes fraud, murder, blackmail, and international money-laundering with so many unanswered questions that the reader keeps turning pages in spite of guessing the ultimate outcome.

While it had its admirers, this book took a lot of flack from many reviewers, but it grabbed me from the beginning and wouldn't let go. I noticed that many of the more negative comments came from those who listened to it in audio form, so I think some of the defects they noticed (repetitive use of names, trite descriptions) were not so noticeable to a reader engrossed in the action.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
The book was very enjoyable, hard too put down, and I would buy additional books

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellently plotted thriller
This thriller offers first-rate suspense, mostly because the plot is very well crafted and presents a mystery that is challenging to unravel. The stories of many mass market paperbacks are easily figured out in the first few chapters, so The Dark Tide is a pleasant change of pace.

Readers will want to pay close attention to the small details that author Andrew Gross tosses out in the early stages of the book, as many foreshadow the excitement to come, and it is quite a ride.I don't want to say more about the story line because the chief attribute of this novel is the range of surprises, large and small, that pop up when a reader least expects them.

The characters are good overall, although I didn't especially resonate to the female lead, who fluctuates wildly between being the helpless damsel in distress and the resourceful heroine who holds up her end of the action. The male lead, a detective named Ty, is well drawn and likable, and several of the secondary characters are very convincing as people you love to hate.If the female lead were stronger I would have given this novel five stars.

Overall, this is an exceptionally good thriller that stands out in a crowded genre.

5-0 out of 5 stars A terrific story

Frankly I started reading this novel because of two not too praiseworthy reasons. First, I had just finished a couple of in depth scholarly volumes and needed to turn to a detective story to rest my mind, and this one was available. Second, I had read a number of books where Andrew Gross received second billing to James Paterson on volumes that I did not think were that great and I wondered how Gross wrote when he wrote his own work. I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed what I read.

I found that Gross told an interesting story that developed naturally with exciting events. The characters were well developed, believable, and likeable. Gross did not reveal all the information needed to solve the case until the end in a proper manner, although there were hints along the way for readers who paid attention. And, most of all, the tale kept my attention throughout.

If Gross would have asked me, should I join Patterson in writing books, I would have advised him to do so, simply because Patterson is a well-known writer and this would give him publicity, and money beside. However, I think that Gross writes better when he writes himself. The faults that people find in the Patterson books are absent in this volume. I look forward to reading other Gross novels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read
I, Like many downloaded this book when it was free. I wanted to try an Andrew Gross book since he co-authored with one of my favorite authors (James Patterson).
I will be buying more of his books in the near future. The story line kept moving and the suspense seemed quit real. There are surprises all along the way. If you like reading James Patterson you'll surely enjoy Andrew Gross. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Timely
I had this in my stash of books to read for so long I wondered if it would still be to my liking.I had passed it over so many times but decided I should just dive in and see what it was all about as I'd read so often that it was one of Ms Delinsky's best. How right they were! This is a very timely story about the deception that all too often happens these days in the media. Also, it touches on the complications of the lives of families and how secrets are held with good intentions. It is well written and drawsyou in from the start.Boston to New Hampshire. The news around Lake Henry and the people who make up the community are abuzz with questions about one of their own...Lily, a beautiful, sensitive music teacher and upscale lounge singer who is involved with a priest who has been elevated to Cardinal. The question is involvment - how and why and the story that evolves from the relationship.True or False?Read and find out.You will enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Mature Romance with a Touch of Revenge
I loved this book. First of all the setting in New Hampshire could have been anywhere in my home state of Minnesota, especially with the loon theme (we have a nesting pair year after year at our family lake place). The characters were well developed with a good mix of strengths AND weaknesses. The plot moved forward with enough twists to keep me turning the pages, and human nature being what it is, the ending ("revenge") was very satisfying! And the growing romance between Lily and John was just the kind of story I like. Five stars!

Product Description

From America's most celebrated true-crime writer comes the heartbreaking, real-life drama of a doomed young woman hopelessly trapped in a web of sexual intrigue, political manipulation, and emotional deception by her charming and successful -- but ultimately deadly -- lover.

On June 27, 1996, thirty-year-old Anne Marie Fahey, who was the scheduling secretary for the governor of Delaware, had dinner with a man she had been having a secret affair with for more than two years. "Tommy" Capano, forty-seven, was perhaps the most politically powerful man in Wilmington. Although recently estranged from his wife, he was a devoted father to his four beautiful young daughters, the trusted son of his widowed mother, and the backbone of his extended family. But sometime after 9:15 that night something terrible happened to Anne Marie. It would be forty-eight hours before her brothers and sisters realized that she had disappeared entirely.

Ann Rule brilliantly traces the lives of both Fahey and Capano as she discloses the intimate details of their ill-fated bonding. A vulnerable, trusting woman becomes spellbound by a charming, duplicitous married man, and what begins as a seemingly unremarkable affair is slowly transformed into an obsessive, convoluted, and deadly relationship.

Destined to become a classic, ...And Never Let Her Go is a riveting account of forbidden love and murder among the rich and powerful, and a chilling insight into the evil that sometimes hides behind even the most charming facade.Amazon.com Review
Thomas Capano was a powerful man in Delaware. The golden child of a respected immigrant family, he had everything most people could ever hope for: money, a family he adored, widespread respect and admiration. His former lover Anne Marie Fahey was never that lucky. Her youth was a seemingly endless string of heartbreak, disappointment, and misery. Somehow, though, she managed to get through it all--her mother's death, abuse from her alcoholic father, devastating poverty--and make a niche for herself as a trusted secretary to Delaware's governor. Thirty years old, she had a whole new life ahead of her. She'd met a young man whom she hoped to someday marry and start a family with, and she finally seemed able to put her past behind her.

But Thomas Capano did not want to be put behind anyone. It was his sheer arrogance--the arrogance that couldn't accept rejection, that couldn't fathom being caught and convicted--that killed Anne Marie Fahey, and Ann Rule's telling of Fahey's story reveals the mind of a true monster. Capano's narcissism prevented him from feeling anything for anyone but himself, but the gripping narrative of And Never Let Her Go is surely the story that Fahey and her family would have wanted to be told. --Lisa Higgins ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Anne Marie Fahey gets the Ann Rule treatment (Kindle)
The murder of Anne Marie Fahey in late June 1996 had everything that would make for an excellent true-crime book: a smooth-talking sociopath from a rich and powerful family, a young sympathetic victim, sexual intrigue, surprising twists in both the investigation and the trial, and even some politics and drugs.Ann Rule handles it all expertly, with her usual sympathy for victims and insight into police work.As some have said, this book is perhaps a bit too long, but I'd much rather have too much detail than too little.

The Kindle edition has no noticeable problems.Numerous photos (including some I'd never seen before) are provided at the end.

4-0 out of 5 stars I liked it.......
And never let you go, by Ann Rule: This book is one of my favorite TC books. It has been a while since i read it but when anyone mentions Ann Rule this is the one i remember the most.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Superb Thriller
This was my favorite of all of Ann Rule's novels.I was haunted for awhile after reading the book.Anne Marie Fahey was a sweet young woman that became entrapped with Thomas Capano, a wealthy businessman that had his own harem of women. While carrying on an affair with the young Anne, he was also married to his long time wife Kay. He had been having an ongoing affair with Debbie, a friend of his wife's, for almost 20 years as well & she ends up playing a big part in his trial.

After 3 years, Anne was around 30 then & wanted desperately to get married & start a family. She had met a wonderful young man that seemed to truly care for her.She broke it off with Tom, this time for good, & Capano just couldn't accept that a woman would leave HIM.His rage & jealousy began to build & he invites Anne over to his home as "friends" and shoots her.He then phones his younger brother & they take her body far out into the ocean on the brother's boat & dump her at sea. This story is truly horrifying & readers are in for quite a ride as to how they finally end up with enough evidence to incriminate the narcissistic sociopath Tom Capano.Anne's story will stick with you & horrify you at what some people are capable of.There was an excellent tv movie made starring Mark Harmon as Capano & Kathryn Morris (Cold Case) as Anne Marie. What a gripping & suspenseful read this was & I commend the author for allowing Anne Marie Fahey to finally have a voice. Here's a controlling & manipulative man who truly thought he was clever enough to get away with murder. Not so clever after all.I'm sure Capano wishes now he had indeed, just let her go.

1-0 out of 5 stars Boring...tedious...somewhat biased....
I need to first say I have read all of Ann's books and found this one the most tedious to finish. It was way too long and full of useless details (what's UP with the constant mentioning of the female cycles in this?).I didn't feel extremely sympathetic towards Anne Marie or Debby.I felt Ann Rule was trying way too hard to portray them as completely innocent, perfect women when it was very obvious this was not the case. The book is full of repetitive information, flat characters, and drivel.Don't waste your time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hard to Put Down
What I look for in a book is a good story and this one met that criteria. This was the first Ann Rule book I've read, and it makes me want to read more.I had seen a "true TV" account of the Compano crime, so I thought I knew what to expect, but the book certainly has much more that I expected. It gives the background of several of the families involved in the book. Then it describes the relationship between the criminal and the victim. Then describes the crime and cover up and finally the pertinent, interesting testimony from the trial. It did seem slanted toward the final outcome, but I didn't have a problem with that because it was pretty obvious from his own letters that Tom Compano was a intellectually-challenged scumbag. If one has ever been associated with a sociopath and been aware of that fact (because they are so charming and manipulative, it's easy to be fooled for a time), one knows how an innocent person can be duped. In fact, I'm opposed to the death penalty, but actually found myself sorry his death penalty was overturned. He was a thoroughly evil person who had the makings of a serial killer if he had not been caught. This was the most engaging book I have read in a long time.I turned off the tv and read til bedtime, then got up in the morning and started reading again before breakfast.I thought it was well researched and well organized and very concise, considering the complexity of the families involved.Excellent book. ... Product Description
Master of suspense James Patterson takes us into a terrifying underworld with this second thriller in his dazzling new Women's Murder Club series.

The sensational killings that have rocked San Francisco appear to be unrelated except in their brutality. But detective Lindsay Boxer senses there's some thread connecting them all. She calls her friends in the Women's Murder Club together to see if they can discover what it is. Surely some clue has been overlooked by their bosses and male colleagues.

Working with Chronicle reporter Cindy Thomas, Assistant District Attorney Jill Bernhardt, and medical examiner Claire Washburn, Lindsay discovers that there is indeed a link. The victims were of different ages, lived in different locations, and were killed with different weapons. But each had a close relative in a particular profession, a profession that sends a chill through Lindsay's heart.

The partners in the Women's Murder Club realize that this killer is after something unspeakable, something deeper than revenge, and that the next target could be one of them. They deduce where the killer is likely to strike next and bait a trap that can't be resisted. But if their calculation is wrong, the consequences will be lethal. And there will be no second chance.Amazon.com Review
2nd Chance reconvenes the Women's Murder Club, four friends (a detective, a reporter, an assistant district attorney, and a medical examiner) who used their networking skills, feminine intuition, and professional wiles to solve a baffling series of murders in 1st to Die.

2nd Chance speeds along at a Formula One pace through many tight curves, but unlike recent entries in the Alex Cross series, it doesn't sacrifice good characters to a twisted plot. Lindsay's the star, but there's a fine esprit de corps among the four women, who are even better developed here than in the first book. What makes them both convincing and interesting as a criminal-justice juggernaut is their willingness to stick their necks out, even if they suffer for it. If you haven't picked up a James Patterson novel in a while, this is a great time to start anew. --Barrie Trinkle ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Money, money, money
This is a huge effort to capitalize on the Patterson name.I think he should be a bit more particular about what product will have his name stamped on it.This is a truly simplistic novel with little "meat" for the readers to sink their teeth into.Although this is fiction, I wish there was a bit more attention to the believeability factor. This is a very easy read and only moderately entertaining.

3-0 out of 5 stars A 2nd Chance to make a first impression.
2nd Chance is a passable, fluff thriller; you'll never confuse James Patterson's writing with the skillfull writing of a Thomas H. Cook. Our protagonist, Lindsay Boxer, is back in this second installment to find someone who is killing seemingly random people. Everyone believes the killings are hate crimes due to all the victims being black, but the killer's motive runs deeper than skin color, and deals more with a certain profession. Patterson paints Lindsay as an emotionalist who allows the scummy characters in the book to constantly get under her skin. She's so indignant and outraged about everything instead of being smart and objective while doing her job.

Also returning for the second installment are Lindsay's gal pals who assist her in crime-solving: the prosecutor, the coroner, and the reporter. I'd list their names if I cared enough, but I don't.

The four professional, thirty-something women all act like they're in high school. Patterson's attempts to make the coroner sound black are ridiculous. We get plenty of "hey girls" and "my girls." Too bad we didn't get a "fo shizzle my nizzle." There is also a minister in the story named Aaron. He is another perfect black specimen similar to Alex Cross. The thing is, Patterson totally disrespects the character's role as a pastor by having him have sex with the floozy reporter. I missed the memo that says it's okay for ministers to have sex before marriage. In fact, the issue of the restrictions of a minister due to his profession and faith isn't even discussed by any character in the story. Patterson attempts to paint this guy as a sincere man of the cloth who practices what he preaches, yet contradicts his character by having him behave like a regular guy who isn't tied by any Christian or moral doctrine. He never does or says anything that would show us he's a server of the Lord. Even his speeches in church have nothing to do with God. Like Jesse Jackson, this man must have gotten his divinity license from a label off a cereal box.

Bottom Line: 2nd Chance isn't as good as 1st to Die even though its twists are more plausible. I'm hesitant about delving any deeper in the series, though I do own the third installment, 3rd Degree.

3-0 out of 5 stars Go to beach. Read book
This second book in the Women's Murder Club reads just as quickly as the first. A reader gets sucked in, but not bogged down. Chapters are short, proofreading was not a priority, but the plot is cohesive. If you're not looking for more than that, this will wet your whistle.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE JAMES PATTERSON!!!!
Every book in this single is great!A great addition to anyones growing library!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hooray for The Women's Murder Club
Another riveting, mindbending thriller from the women's murder club,by way of Mr. Patterson.
An unusually calculated serial killer is on the loose and he's clever. His targets seem to have nothing in common, but the heroine, Detective Lt.Boxer, thinks differently. The F.B.I. becomes involved but they're on the wrong track. You'll never guess whodunit until maybe the very end.
Mr. Patterson's book has many characters, yet the plot is not too convoluted. It's easy to follow but you never know what's coming next. His descriptive text and narratives place you deep into the mind's and the feelings of all the characters. I absolutely could not put it down. If you read 1ST to Die, then you'll love 2ND Chance. I did!

3-0 out of 5 stars "1st to Die"
Some of you may be familiar with James Patterson's Alex Cross series; there is currently a film-adaptation of one of Patterson's novels, Along Came a Spider starring Morgan Freeman.1st to Die is Patterson's latest achievement and it marks the first installment of a series he will develop further in the future.

The setting: there is a killer going round the Bay Area, taking the lives of newly-weds on the night of their honeymoon or the day of their wedding. The SFPD is pretty much stumped, slowly piecing the evidence together, but not actually getting very far - leads leading to cul-de-sacs.

The characters: four woman who unite, all from different walks of life, to solve the case and catch the serial killer. The main character, Lindsay Boxer, is an investigator for the homicide division for the homicide division for the SFPD; she wants most to succeed, but she is concurrently battling a devastating illness that saps more of her energy each day she sets about solving this bloody investigation.Claire Washburn is a medical examiner, friend to Lindsay, she provides important details that help the case.Jill Bernardt is the Assistant D.A. who wants to catch just this person just as much as the others, hoping to try him and put him away fro a long time.Cindy Thomas is a small-time reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle, but she has been recently promoted to the crime desk at the newspaper: her research provides valuable evidence for the case, while she keeps the country up-to-date on the circumstances of the case, that is when Lindsay agrees to the press release.Together they are the Women's Murder Club.

The novel:Patterson has managed to create a whole new world in the familiar territory of the Bay Area.He dives beneath the ordinary, everyday façade of San Francisco and reveals an invisible underlining that is witnessed by few.The reader is taken on a joyride of shocking and exciting proportions, as the quartet meet and bring the clues together, steadily catching up to the killer, until the climactic finish, with Patterson's inevitable twists surprising the reader in a tour-de-force conclusion.

1-0 out of 5 stars really bad book
I am glad I didn't pay money to receive this book.I got it at the library's free table.I started to read it and found that it was full of violence.I stopped reading it and threw it away. Our society is violent enough w/o books having violence in them.So I threw it away and hurled it way back in the trash bin so nobody could reach it, it was just so bad.I would give no stars if I could.

2-0 out of 5 stars 1st to Die
Too much time spent with sex that did not contribute to the story.I'd don't personally know any women who sit around and discuss all the funny places that they have had sex. ( I believe this is a guy thing.)Mr. Patterson seems to have confused sex with love.
When the forensic pathologist identified the culpret as a woman from the urine, she did not take into account that a woman who is menstrating would be wearing a pad or tampon. If a pad the urine would not have been on the floor, or not in that amount; if a tampon, there would not have been blood in the urine!

1-0 out of 5 stars Will never buy again
Ordered a "like new" copy and the book was a mess! Will never buy here again.

2-0 out of 5 stars Patterson should read up on dogs...
I agree with what a lot of the 1 and 2 start reviewers have said and have one thing to add: the author has obviously not done any research on dogs. Or, possibly, border collies in America are very different from the breed we have here in Scotland. Border collies are fairly large dogs and I would really like to see one perch on somebody's lap looking out to the bay... makes for a very, very funny picture! Next, does Mr Patterson know that border collies are working dogs and keeping one in a flat is absolutely ridiculous and amounts to animal cruelty? And if the heroine of the books indeed keeps her collie in a flat, then it is highly likely that when she returns from work, the collie will have taken the flat apart from sheer boredom. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Knight's Illusion
Lisette Adam is a true woman of faith, who waited for love before giving away her precious gift--her virginity. Tyson was her true love, and deep in her heart there was no one to replace him, but she moves on after his marriage.

Dr. William Conover enters her life and he is truly a Knight's Illusion. On the surface, he appears to have it together: rich parents, a hard worker trying to make it on his own merits. The fact that he has a woman on the side to take care of his physical needs, while romancing Lisette angers me. He wants his cake and to eat it too!

This book is well written and takes us through the gamut of emotions. Each scene is eloquently written and I was sorry to see it end. Well done, Melissa!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wathington is Defintely a Author to Watch...
Lisette Adams has seen her share of bad luck. Her parents were killed when she was young and her first love has totally disregarded her.She left to attend college with the quest of completing her degree and joining the ranks of those searching for a successful career. Then she met her knight riding in on a white horse, Will, or so she thought.Lisette started to question Will's heart when her true feelings for an old friend came to the surface.

Tyson was a close friend of Lisette's.In fact they grew up together - his family took her in after the death of her parents.Tyson's marriage is shaky and he attempts to discuss his issues with Lisette but things didn't work out.A few weeks later he is in a deadly car accident.Lisette isn't certain that he will survive, so she sheds her heart while standing vigil by his hospital bed. Will Lisette be able to ride off into the sunset with her knight after all?

Wathington is a superb storyteller. The character development and vivid emotional details are magnificent. The flashbacks, romantic drama, and love left unspoken cumulate in a page turning romance.Wathington is definitely an author to watch.
