5-0 out of 5 stars Healing relationships are possible.
This is an excellent book on the healing power inherent in healthy, intimate relationships. But this is not just another flaky "positive thinking" "how-to" book. Written by a noted therapist andresearcher, it summarizes extensive research done at the TimberlawnResearch Foundation, in Dallas, Texas, and presents the results, along withinteresting and insightful case studies, in a clear, easy-to-read style fora general audience. It is thorough and informative enough to be useful toprofessionals in this area, and includes the Timberlawn Couple and FamilyEvaluation Scale, which can be used to rate couple and family relationshipsin terms of healthy functioning.

An excelent resource, likely to become aclassic. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that will have its place in history
A book that starts with a boy and ends with a man with a sense of values and beliefs that went far beyond the boundaries of America and threatened many good old boys who fought back the only way the knew how - to put an innocent man behind bars. The book is thought provoking, a quick read, and sure to create a topic worthy of discussion on so many levels. I recommend this book to everyone who thinks that this is a country for all. ... Product Description
Drawn from over thirty years as a Christian, teacher, pastor, and missionary, the ideas presented in "What God Can't Do" will help the reader experience the joy of overflowing prayer, and achieve unparalelled growth and freedom by focusing on what God will do. Jerry says, "I love to ask God questions, and He never seems to get tired of answering them. One day I started putting some of the things we talked about down on paper, and realized that He was using me as a "voice" to bring hope, healing, and encouragement to both Christians and to people outside the Church." Written in a light-hearted, easy to read style, he presents totally unique and original insights into God's purpose and design in our lives.Pastor Jerry shares from his heart the "secret of happiness," and talks about some of the explanations of God we have heard in church for years that are not accurate, and which hinder our prayers. His experience shows that most of our sickness, frustration, and relationship problems ultimately have a hidden spiritual root cause that can be readily discovered and addressed. Other topics include: hands-on prayers that work for physical healing, Forgiveness 101, exploring and listening to God, unconditional love, and much more. Also included is the prayer that God always answers immediately, and the one question we should never let God hear us asking (or even thinking). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone should use these keys!
What God Can't Do is an engaging, thought-provoking, insightful and genuinely enjoyable book to read. The author, Pastor Jerry L. Lewis, shares his insights and experiences in a light-hearted, easy-to-understand manner that is highly effective at reaching out and relating to the reader.

Pastor Lewis gets to the heart of the matter of effective prayer. Most important, he explains what to ask for and what not to ask for, and why.The Skills Drills questions at the end of each chapter helps the reader drive each point home in a positive, self-reflective manner.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
I found this book very useful, easy to follow, and have referred on tomy family and friends, I was very touched and moved by the honesty!

4-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking short chapters
I have not finished the book, but like the format and his approach. There are many typos, however, a better editor was needed.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to Ask, How to Listen

"What God Can't Do" is a superb manual for the most important communication in your life...prayer. How to talk to God, and how to listen to Him, is something far too many people don't make time for, or only do when they are desperate, and then don't have the practice and built up "prayer muscles" to be consistent and effective at it, with the ensuing result of thinking that "prayer doesn't work." Pastor Jerry Lewis gives you all the basic pointers, like always making sure that what you hear in your spirit matches with what is written in scripture (it pays to know your Bible well) and so much more. Pastor Jerry writes about the 5 things that are most likely to happen when the Lord communicates, and the one that I had never thought of before, but is so true, is that the inner noise "flat-lines," and your mind, even for just an instant, becomes "crystal clear like the rarified air at the top of a mountain."

Pastor Jerry shows us many tools we can implement in our prayer time. I really like his "Lord, please show me one thing I need to know about this situation." Just one thing. No clutter or confusion. All you need is one thing, to set your feet on the right path. This is a great prayer secret in times of need, and if asked with sincerity, He will respond. And as Pastor Jerry points out on page 12, God always responds in a way you least expect, and in a way that surpasses expectation. "What God Can't Do" deals with the all important subject of forgiveness, praying in a group, healing prayer, and much more. Pastor Jerry also gives Skill Drills at the end of each chapter, which help us solidify what we have learned, and sort out any inner conflicts.

My copy of "What God Can't Do" is now heavily highlighted, and will be referred to again and again. A teacher, pastor and missionary for over 3 decades, Pastor Jerry also has a sense of humor and an engaging, appealing quality that comes through the pages of his book. You can't help but like this man, and his unique and wise Jerry Theories are great. This is a slender book with a lot of spiritual meat and potatoes. It's got a nice simple layout too, with very easy-on-the-eyes large print. Ask God the right questions, and he will always listen, and answer.

5-0 out of 5 stars It Just Keeps Getting Better
My wife still walks past me singing that old "I love you a bushel and a peck..." song after 40 years of marriage because the insights I wrote about in this book (I'm the author, OK?) really work.It is very important to me to encourage people, and help them experience joy and love.
I am also a reading teacher, and I know some folks think of reading as hard work. That's why I designed "What God Can't Do" to be very easy to read. I included just enough Scripture to show that the ideas have a theological basis, but without sounding "preachy."These are real suggestions that get results, not just some trite, "Oh, just give it all to God," blabber.
It's not that difficult to improve your life, and the principles are universal in nature, so you can expect results even if you are of another faith besides Christianity.Besides, who couldn't use a little more joy?
For more information, visit me at [...].As soon as I find the author blog/links, I'll move this there. Thanks & goodbye. ... Read more

Product Description

Paul Cézanne (1839–1906) is one of the great geniuses in the history of art, and his work has influenced a multitude of artists throughout Europe. Across the Atlantic, Cézanne’s paintings had a similarly catalytic effect on artists emerging in the United States during the early 20th century. Cézanne and American Modernism is the first book devoted specifically to his impact on American art and its eager reception there. It shows how American painters and photographers cemented Cézanne’s legacy by spreading their respect and admiration for his vision with their own art, writings, and exhibitions.

Examining Cézanne’s influence on more than a generation of American artists, this handsomely illustrated book features paintings and photography by Paul Strand, Marsden Hartley, Man Ray, Alfred Stieglitz, Charles Demuth, Arshile Gorky, Charles Sheeler, Stanton Macdonald-Wright, Maurice Prendergast, Morgan Russell, Max Weber, and many others. Cézanne’s far-reaching transformative impact on each artist’s aesthetic vision is explored, while extensive essays shed new light on a wide range of subjects from American collectors of his work and his shaping of modernism in the American West to the lasting resonance of his art on Abstract Expressionism in the 1950s.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cezanne and American Modernism
Beautiful book, great reproductions illustrating the Cezanne's influence on other artists.
Would have preferred a paperback edition for many reasons including the energy consumed shipping it to Hawaii.
Amazon.com provided efficient service as always!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource for Understanding Cezanne's Influence on American Painters and Photographers
"Your eyes will see the King in His beauty;
They will see the land that is very far off." -- Isaiah 33:17

How does artistic influence spread? Today, an image in one location can be soon seen by billions through television, the Internet, and reproduction on paper.

A hundred years ago, a reclusive artist's work might only be seen by a few hundred people during a lifetime. Cezanne is a partial example because his work wasn't widely exhibited and collected during his lifetime. Yet if you go to any museum that presents modern art, you will see Cezanne described as a seminal influence on much of what occurred in the last century. If you are like me, you probably just assumed that Cezanne's work was always well appreciated and understood. Wrong!

Cezanne and American Modernism (the exhibition catalog for the show that is just ending at the Montclair Art Museum, moves next to The Baltimore Museum of Art, and concludes at the Phoenix Art Museum over the summer) delicately describes Cezanne's career: the visibility of his work during and after his life especially through collectors, dealers, and exhibitions; how artists and critics evaluated the work over time; and details the influence that Cezanne had on the works of over 30 prominent 20th century American artists in excellent, well-researched essays and illustrations. By coming from so many different perspectives, the essays and illustrations speak eloquently about Cezanne in a way that you've probably never thought about him. I especially enjoyed seeing Cezanne's works displayed on the same or adjoining pages as the American works that so obviously seem to be inspired from them.

Although I hadn't planned to make a special trip to see this show, now I feel that I absolutely must if I want to more deeply understand Cezanne and the many American artists whose work I so admire.

The American artists who are discussed and displayed in the volume include: Josef Bakos, Oscar Bluemner, Anne Brigman, Patrick Henry Bruce, Arthur B. Carles, Andrew Dasburg, Arthur B. Davies, Charles Demuth, Arther G. Dove, Arshile Gorky, Marsden Hartley, William H. Johnson, Leon Kroll, Stanton Macdonald-Wright, John Marin, Alfred H. Maurer, Willard Nash, B.J.O. Nordfeldt, Paul Outerbridge, Walter Pach, Maurice Prendergast, Man Ray, Anne Estelle Rice, Morgan Russell, Morton Livingston Schamberg, Charles Sheeler, Edward Steichen, Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand, Abraham Walkowitz, Margaret Watkins, Max Weber, Clarence H. White, and Hale Woodruff.

If you don't know all of these artists, you'll probably find some new favorites from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars "One day, they will have painters" (Matisse in 1933 on American art)
This is the catalogue for the current exhibition held at the Montclair Art Museum, which will later travel to Baltimore, and it focuses on a little-studied aspect of American art: the influence of Cézanne on pre-WWII American modernists (Hartley, Demuth, Man Ray, Gorky, etc). It is a wonderfully illustrated and thoroughly informative publication and, if anything, it serves as a reminder of how strong European influences were at the time and how those influences contributed to thwart the birth of a truly original American modern art (this was to happen only after WWII and the eclosion of Abstract Expressionism).

The book is full of interesting insights (such as the role of Francophile American collectors in promoting Cézanne in the US) and also of outright discoveries, such as "Cezannian" landscapes by Man Ray or Gorky which appear weak and industrious when compared to the master's works. Some three years after the Whitney exhibition focusing on the influence of Picasso on American Art, this book is an ideal complement to it and helps to understand the early developments of XXth century American painting. ...
