3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
This book had a really great premise and it started off strong. Then all of a sudden it became "all sex and no story". I read a lot of romances and I like mine with a good storyline. The author definitely let the storyline lag and focused more on lots and lots of sex scenes. If you are looking for a book with lots of steamy sex, then this book might be good for you. However, if you want solid story (with sex on the side), you might want to pass this one up. It was just OK for me.

4-0 out of 5 stars A cute and funny romance!
What can I say? While I'm a sucker for a happy ending, this one had me laughing in places as well.

Sean Madigan, the handsome, sexy stud muffin of Big Knob (okay, the synopsis had me laughing - who would give any town that for a name!), was just about every available women's `go-to-guy' for great sex. And Sean, being a guy, wouldn't say no. But it got to the point where sex wasn't enough anymore and stopped - for nearly a year, even avoiding the women as much as possible. But the women don't make it easy for him. I must say, the author was really inventive with the places and 'suggestions'. He's thinking about settling down, and the women have him on the run.

The first line, and the rest of the paragraph, set up the story really well. You're snorting, trying not to laugh right then and there. Just when you think the women are about to tear off his clothes in the middle of the street, Dorcas and Ambrose, unknowingly to Sean, come to the rescue. Serendipity, I'd say. They help him with what he wants - too well, I might add.

In comes Maggie Grady. She likes her boss, likes her job, but is getting desperate. As a location finder for SaveALot, she'd been out-bid by the rival store, MegaMart, too many times and is desperately seeking the perfect location. Then a surprising e-mail sets in motion the rest of the story. If the location is perfect, Big Knob is the ticket at saving Maggie's job. But she doesn't know what she's in for...

What she wasn't ready for was Sean. No longer a stud muffin to the rest of the women, sporting awful looking glasses and extremely unruly hair, he's still very 'stud muffiny' to Maggie, and she doesn't want to fall for him. Finding out that the location she's looking at is the very one Sean has been working for doesn't help the situation, and now Sean is determined to sway Maggie in another direction.

While the sex is erotic, it's not overly graffic, which was a plus. It was nice to read something like this for a change - where words were chosen carefuly to give the reader the idea, but not graffic to the point of losing interest. But there's a lot of it.

I did find that there could have been just a bit more to the plot, though. I mean, Sean had wanted help in the first place to back the women, but the more he thought about it, the more he was hoping that the great sex would distract and sway Maggie away from the property he wants. I did like, however, that the story proves the point that looks aren't everything ... and can be deceiving. And even with all the fumbling, he still swept her off her feet; not despite it but maybe because of it.

I sort of felt, however, that the whole George the dragon thing almost took away part of the story. I mean, Dorcas and Ambrose's exile to Big Knob was the whole point for them - because of George. But it sort of really didn't go with the story - almost a diversion.

Still, the story was cute, funny and I'm sure I'll pick up the second book.

5-0 out of 5 stars VLT has done it again!
With lighthearted comedy, steamy romance, and some colorful, unforgettable characters, it's easy to say I was excited for her new "Hex" series. You will not disappointed with "Overhexed" and I am eagerly awaiting her new one.If you loved the "Nerd" books, you'll love her new series even more!VLT has done it again!

Starting her new series where city girl meets small town, you're introduced to VLT's quiet community of Big Knob.(Kind of obvious reason for the type of books these are, but oh well).Through the main characters, you meet city girl, Maggie Grady and small town Casanova, Sean Madigan from BK. However, you find yourself immersed in this little down-home type place, where nothing is ordinary! With a witch and warlock couple trying to take care of a disobedient dragon living in the forest, they're busy trying to get Maggie and Sean together.Maggie and Sean are made for each other, but while both are vying for the same property, her as a final attempt at saving her job and Sean to save the memory of his family's past, they're trying to suppress the growing passion between them. But someone has to lose the property. In the process does that mean they lose each other?

5-0 out of 5 stars A Memorable and Magical novel That This Reader Will Soon Not Forget!
Like heat-seeking missiles, women attract to Sean Madigan from the moment they see this handsome stud muffin. The man is sexual candy to women in the town he lives in. Sean cannot walk down the main street without getting propositioned at every turn. Being a sexual magnet has been a problem he cannot shake. Poor baby.

Being the town sex symbol has finally worn Sean down and now he wants to be normal, unattractive even, and in steps Dorcas and Ambrose the newest residences of Big Knob. Now the magic truly happens...

OVER HEXED is by authoress Vicki Lewis Thompson. From the opening line of this book, "I'm looking for an old-fashion screw," Ms. Thompson never lets up on the humor that weaves throughout this magical romance. The characters flourish to life, becoming people that will nail you to this book. If that is not enough, the fresh premise carries this story until the very end.

Sean has never had a problem attracting women, in fact, he decides that being less handsome and sexy would be better. Maybe then he would be able to lead a somewhat normal life.

Meeting the magical matchmakers, Dorcas and Ambrose--though he does not know that they have been banished to Big Knob for practicing offbeat magic--Sean strikes up a friendship that will end up turning this hot hunk into a downright dud. Dorcas and Ambose do not stop there, nope, they also cannot help themselves in bringing into Sean's path the perfect woman for him. For once in his life, Sean will have to rely on personality and not his looks to get his dream girl. Will it work? Can she see her dream man behind the thick-rimmed glasses, not quite fit body, and mop of unruly hair?

Oh, did this reviewer forget to mention there is also a dragon in this story that will leave you in stitches? Read the book to find out about this too cool creature.

OVER HEXED is one do-not-miss read. Ms. Thompson has penned a snappy and sexy novel that this reviewer found witty beyond words. In a one word summation: Fantastic!

I really was intrigued by the characters, but there wasn't any depth to them... too much dialogue and not enough description.I like fast paced novels, but not so much that I can't easily picture the characters and the scene. The book felt more like stream-of-consciousness than anything.I didn't feel the need to stop reading it, the characters kept me going, but I won't be reading its sequel. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Fun Multi-layered anthology
3 of my favorite romance writers bring this charming collection to life- all focused on April Fools Day so be prepared to chuckle!

Vicki Lewis Thompson's April Fools offering sparkles with humor and some really fun quirks- her handsome salesman leading man is named Andre--- and every woman thinks he is sooooo French and debonaire...right! He does have moves- but the name is from the cheap champagne his folks drank at his conception....Great humor, tension and sexy sexy interplay and steam with heroine and hero. She asks him out- then finds out she will be his boss on Monday---- how they resolve the issue of office romance is done with intelligence .

Stephanie Bond also shares a story of office romance- again our heroine is put in charge of sales and her top salesman is her one regret- a one night stand from her past that she can't forget. They go on a road trip to cement their working relationship and he plans a humdinger of an April Fools stunt for her- only it backfires--- the whole trip backfires. Fires heat up between them and he realizes he has grossly underestimated this woman he planned to sink. Seeing her really stand up to him on the business side was great- smart woman working even smarter---- yet she totally respects his talents. Again their story is handled well - solid passion and tension- humor--- fun!

Third April Fools day offering by Judith Arnold is a subtle tale- two strangers hear they are engaged on the radio! They meet and try to deal with the fallout and both find that what started as a joke has serious potential. Set in Boston this one is a little more subdued but again has strong characters, nice conflict and some humor as well as a solid dose of warmth and affection.

Bottom Line- a keeper! And I want to read about the two friends mentioned in the VLT story! ( would not be surprised if they show up on e-harlequin.com to be printed with this one as a book on their own at some date- a very Harlequin thing to do)

4-0 out of 5 stars Finding the purrfect relationship . . .
Truer words were never writ!

After a confusing beginning, //Unleashed// by Katie MacAlister whisks you to join a were-jaguar at the Cupid Cats Shelter. Not being into were-anythings or vampires, my belief didn't quite suspend that far. There's some wacky dialogue between Wildlife Protection Officer Jacintha Ferreira, and her sister Corazon, even before were-jaguar therion, Avery Scott, becomes a tall, dark, handsome stranger. Ms. MacAlister has a devoted following, so I'm definitely the exception here.

Can anyone hijack a story from a winsome child and an aging cat? Don't underestimate Dr. Edie Handleman of the Shelter. When her day-job boss appears at the shelter, seeking a kitten for Chloe, his small daughter, Chloe chooses Ishy. Trouble starts when Chloe decides Ishy is really Pixie, long-lost cat of the mother she'd never known. Connie Brockway's //Cat Scratch Fever// demonstrates why she's a national best-selling author.

//A Cat's Game// by Vicki Lewis Thompson re-unites high-school sweethearts Jon Ramsey, an almost Oscar-winning hunk, and Kate Archer, a primatologist just back from a trip to the Amazon after discovering a new species of monkey. But then along comes Darwin, a turquoise-eyed cat adopted from the Shelter. He's a cool cat on a wet tin roof!

4-0 out of 5 stars three fun lightheaded feline romances
"Unleashed" by Katie MacAlister.Fish and Wildlife Officer Jacintha "kitty whisperer" Ferreira arrives at the Cupid Cats shelter to investigate a Moravian jaguar inside with a hangover.Instead of just a large feline she finds voices in her head courtesy of vampire Avery Scott.

"Cat Scratch Fever" by Connie Brockway. In Chicago, Widower Jim Curran takes his five years old Chloeto the nearby animal shelter so she can pick a kitten as her pet. However, the little girl insiststhat an elderly cat is her late mother's long-missing Pixie. While her father and shelter director Dr. Edith Handelman know that is impossible, no one bothered to tell the cat.

"A Cat's Game" by Vicki Lewis Thompson. While her sister is on vacation, Kate Archer manages her sibling's bed and breakfast in Bisbee, Arizona. Her first arrival is her high school sweetheart Jon Ramsey. It is the newly adopted cat who plays matchmaker.

These are three fun lightheaded feline romances as a cat stars in Kate MacAlister's urban fantasy and plays matchmaker in the other two tales.

4-0 out of 5 stars These cats are supposedly magical and will indeed bring romance into the life of the ladies who adopted them.
Cupid Cats:
Unleashed by Katie MacAlister
A Cat's Game by Vicki Lewis Thompson
Cat Scratch Fever by Connie Brockway
Paranormal Romance - July 6, 2010
4 Stars

Cupid Cats is a collection of three stories from three different writers, but as the title suggests, they all have magical cats in common. Or specifically, cats from Cupid Cats Shelter, whose tagline is "bring a little magic and love into your life - adopt a cat." These cats are supposedly magical and will indeed bring romance into the life of the ladies who adopted them.

In Unleashed by MacAlister, the plot revolves around a Morovian, were-jaguar (who was found in Cupid Cats shelter) and a wildlife officer. So even though, it's not strictly about a normal kitty from the shelter, there's still a cat involved, albeit a big one. MacAlister is a zany writer. She's not exactly my cup of tea, but I can't help but be amused by the characters that keep popping up. First, a vampire were-jaguar, next an elf. Before you know it, the whole story becomes a circus with wild and crazy things happening. If you like goofiness and vampires, you will like Unleashed.

A Cat's Game by Thompson has a whole different vibe to it. Superstar actor Jon goes off to Bisbee, a remote town, for a much needed getaway only to meet up with his ex-high school girlfriend. Needless to say, she comes with a cat that she got from Cupid Cats Shelter. Through funny and cute circumstances, the magical kitty works his charm to bring the lovers together. A sweet and really cute story, this will make readers go `aww. I do like the kitty, but I think the secret star of this story is Esmeralda, the unabashedly hippy and weird shelter lady. Her character is so cheesy and clichéd that I bet the author must be having a blast each time she has to write scenes with Esmeralda in it.

But my favorite story out of these three has to be Cat Scratch Fever by Brockway. The father of a little girl, who is dead set in adopting this mysterious elderly cat, falls in love with the eccentric lady who manages the shelter. Edith is a shy woman who does not know how to socialize with others. But somehow, Jim Curran fell in love with her. Of course, there's a kitty involved. Her name is Ishy-Pixie, the cat that the little girl firmly believes belongs to her dead mother but disappeared on the night her mother died. Using these three main characters, Brockway concocts a marvelous, heart wrenching love story that had me tearing up! Brockway has a gift for creating life-like characters with quirks and flaws. For example, when Edith gets nervous, she starts using words with at least five syllables. Its little things like these that make her story stand out. I really enjoyed Cat Scratch Fever and will definitely re-read it again...with my own kitty next to me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Story Arc
The basis for all three stories is an elevator accident in which a Wall Street commodities trader, an NYC cop, and an East Coast trucker meet and decide to change their lives by buying a guest ranch in Arizona. The men initially have nothing in common except for a basic dissatisfaction/disillusionment about the course of their lives. The trader is a widower who has never really gotten over his wife's senseless death; the trucker is trying to get in touch with an unforgettable woman with whom he had a one-night stand; the cop is trying to fight to prevent his son's stepfather from adopting him. Each one eventually travels out to the ranch for his own reasons - the trader to check out the investment and his plans to subdivide the property, the trucker to heal after his injuries, and the divorced cop to rebuild his relationship with his son.

Needless to say, each man finds more than he bargained for, both in personal growth and in love. All learn that the true value of the ranch is not necessarily counted in monetary terms.Running through all three stories is a mystery about sabotage that is occuring on the ranch, which is ultimately solved in the final story.

The stories were interesting because a good portion of them were told from the male viewpoint, which was a nice change of pace. All of the characters appear in each other's stories to one degree or another.Ms. Thompson's stories are always tightly written with good dialogue, scenes and characters, and this one was no exception. The romances were all different, and while the sexual encounters were not as explicit as in some of her other books, the sexual tension was nicely done. The location descriptions made the ranch seem real.At 664 pages, this was a great book to spend a day with.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good read but a little generic
"Urban Cowboys" is a compilation of three short novels written by Thompson back in 1995.The three heroes are linked by an elevator accident and the subsequent purchase of a ranch. The three stories plot the development of romantic relationships for these three men, as well as the eventual solution of a mystery that runs throughout all three.

Thompson's most recent work is distinguished by humor, clear writing, and imaginative erotic scenes (especially in her Temptation/Blaze stuff).Since the stories in "Urban Cowboys" date back a few years, they don't have the same zing that I've enjoyed in her recent books.

All of the characters are engaging, and the stories are obviously heavily linked and work well in an anthology such as this.I can see the roots of Thompson's later work in some of the more imaginative scenes.

But for the most part, these stories read like hundreds of other romances.Fans of Thompson looking for the complete collection will probably grab it and enjoy it.And there's nothing here -not- to like.I simply didn't enjoy this particular collection as much as Thompson's newer stuff.

Enjoy! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Three cowboys and a baby.
The Colorado Kid is an unapologetic remake of the 3 men & a baby movies, but if you can get over the predictability, it's a cute read.

I did get a little irritated by the hero's insistence that he was the father once his friend turned out to be another candidate--in the movie, it was clearer that they all WANTED to be the father because they'd fallen in love with the baby, but that didn't really show in this book.

He also stuck to his idiotic plan to marry the baby's mother even if he was in love with someone else fo WAY too long--because his parents were divorced. Um. Marrying one person when you're in love with another one seems like a good recipe for divorce, if you ask me.

But I did enjoy Vicki Lewis Thompson's writing.

4-0 out of 5 stars An enchanting read -- Highly recommended
Authors Vicki Lewis Thompson, Cathy Gillen Thacker and Bethany Campbell have made this reviewer a new fan of the delightful small town of Crystal Creek and its charming citizens. As it faces the radical changes of moving into the new decade, Crystal Creek's determination to maintain small town closeness provides a delightful refuge to readers longing to escape the hurried pace and impersonal feeling of big cities.

"I'll Take Texas" by Bethany Campbell: In the midst of May Madness, a stranger moves through evaluating the landscape and its inhabitants. Nick Belyle brings the promise of radical change in the guise of progress with his representation of Castle Enterprises. But his mysterious errand and its consequences promise to affect all of Crystal Creek. Worse, the last thing Nick expected was to confront the girl he never forgot, or the explosive passion they could share if their interests were not so divided by his job.

Author Bethany Campbell pens a powerful tale of lovers caught in star-crossed purposes, confronting the desires of the heart and the demands of loyalty in a story both tender and passionate. Shelby Sprague mistrusts slick men with big city values. Nick is loyal to Castle Enterprises and the miracles the owner made possible. While progress must continue, Campbell pens a solution that shakes the small town of Crystal Creek without destroying it.

"Made for Lovin' You" by Cathy Gillen Thacker: Claire Page left her groom standing at the altar after a stunning disclosure left her unable to marry her blue-blooded fiancé. Now she seeks refuge from the gossip in Crystal Creek, planning to stay away from another relationship until she has time to heal. However, her fierce independence only serves as a challenge to veterinarian Dusty Turner, who cannot resist this sexy city-girl. The more she pushes him away, the more Dusty becomes determined to prove that time has no meaning in matters of the heart.

Cowboys, pick-up trucks and spicy Tex-mix make for a flavorful combination with Cathy Gillen Thacker's pen. Claire wisely refuses to salve one broken romance by springing immediately into a new one. Her feistiness and sassiness make for a lively read, especially when Dusty is equally determined to enjoy the magic of love, despite the unfortunate romantic circumstances that drove them both to Crystal Creek. Thacker presents a lovely tale of small town values, healing and enchantment.

"She Used to be Mine" by Vicki Lewis Thompson: Teague Sloan Jr. returns to Crystal Creek on a traitor's mission. Once an employee of the Hole in the Wall Dude Ranch, now he has been contracted to move their exotic animals elsewhere to prepare for Castle Enterprise's extreme changes. Kendra Lynn Burton fell in love with Teague during their time there, but refused to follow him to the big city when he left. Instead, she makes plans to dig her roots even deeper, no matter how Teague uses his return visit to lure her away.

Vicki Lewis Thompson uses her skills to blend hot passion with tender emotion to great effect in "She Used to be Mine." Teague's carefully planned seduction that goes awry will touch reader's hearts, even as his determination to win the woman he loves puts him directly at cross-purposes with her dreams. With a shared history but different goals, Kendra and Teague seem to find themselves at an impasse that only the charm of Crystal Creek can overcome.

Small town Crystal Creek confronts traumatic change when Castle Enterprises lures sellers with millions. From the first moment Nick appears in town, Crystal Creek will never be the same. Nevertheless, authors Thompson, Thacker and Campbell confront those changes with unique voices even as they all move through the transitions gracefully. Readers who have not yet enjoyed a quiet afternoon in Crystal Creek will treasure its memorable citizens and new friends. Readers who've treasured this town through the previous twenty-seven books will take great pleasure in this RETURN TO CRYSTAL CREEK. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Far From Typical
This is my favorite Harlequin romance book. Trudy isn't the typical virginal character that are in almost every Harlequin novel. It is quite fun to read how Linc comes out of his shell. Each of the sex scene were wonderfully steamy and even had a bit of humor in them. I love the development of a no strings relationship to one of love between Linc and Trudy. This is one of the rare books that I would read over again.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good. The best part is the role playing ideas.
Trudy dresses up in different costumes and role plays during sex.She is creative and interesting in how she acts and what she does. She moved to NY City from a small town and wants to date different types of men.Her friend Meg asked Linc to show her around town for the first couple of weeks, and that is where the story starts.

Sexual language: moderate.Number of sex scenes: twelve.Setting: present day NY City and Virtue, Kansas.Copyright: 2002.Genre: contemporary romance.

LOVED IT....
Trudy wants to take on new york and experience all she can with the city..and Linc very sexy wonderful guy the chemistry was amazing i love that he was pretending sometimes to know what he is doing even when he didn't because he didn't want Trudy to think he can't do it. you will love this book it will make you smile and fall in love with small Town girl T rudy Baxter

5-0 out of 5 stars ACTING ON IMPULSE-Linc and Trudy-SPOILERS
Favorite scene with Trudy-
Telling Linc's parents off.

Favorite scene with Linc-
Visiting Trudy's family.

Together-
Breaking up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and steamy!
The trick to any Harlequin line is balancing the "theme" of the series (in this case, sensuality) with real relationship growth and well-developed characters.Vicki Lewis Thompson manages to do this quite well in "Acting On Impulse."

The main characters are both well-developed, and the relationship between them is given time to evolve. While Trudy's desire to "experience" may be a little artificial, it's the all-important plot point that pulls in Linc, which makes it a bit more forgivable.

In addition, this book is steamy and hot and very very imaginative. The fantasies that Linc and Trudy act out are wonderful and sensual. In addition, Trudy's travails -- the problems she encounters trying to act out those fantasies -- make them a bit more believable and far more human.

Thompson once again proves why she is at the top of heap of believable, character-driven erotic romance writers.Enjoy! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun, sexy, lighthearted reading!
This is the first in the Nerd series that I've read and it made me want to go get all the others! The characters are believable and funny and the plot is intriguing enough that it kept me from putting the book down! It is sensual and sexy, while being really funny and not too predictable, and like many others have commented, I often laughed out loud! It is the perfect take-to-the-beach romance! It mixes comedy with romance and a good plot in a way I've never read before! Kudos!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Nerds Rule!
I love this entire series. Each book is well written. There are funnynerd references, bad jokes, and puns, that brings out the inner nerd in all of us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Female nerds be praised!
I love the Nerd series, but before I read this installment I was getting a little fed up with the fact that all the nerds were men.Being a female, and a nerd myself, I hold my title proudly and I'm very happy that I now have a heroine I can personally relate to in the character of Eve Dupree.

This is the perfect mix of romance, comedy and good old-fashioned "nerd speak".It'll make you want to invent a few things of your own before you're through!

3-0 out of 5 stars Overdone plot of Model & Engineer Whose Love Conquers Common Sense
Engineer Charles finds Eve after an explosion. She is mum. They meet at a bar and after she beats him in a pool game, they start a relationship. He
doesn't want to kiss or have sex because of plans to leave for a new town.
Yet their chemistry is undeniable. He becomes part of her life with the Hoovercraft, as other reviewers note. They become unseparable. There are lots of other characters involved including a devious cousin who tries to steal the plans in order to pay a gambling debt, an insaitable nymph.,
Eve's sister and Hot Buns bakery. After the initial break-in, Charles seems overly daft in trying to identify the culprit. ignoring the obvious.
Toward the end, after their first consumation, love and sex preoccupies
almost all of their actions. The book drags on and on.This is not one of Lewis's best works. I enjoyed reading it in one sitting but come away
feeling rather cheated, especially at the surprise ending.

1-0 out of 5 stars Just a little much
The sexual innuendos in this story really got to be too much, one after the other after the other, they just weren't funny anymore. My feeling is that the author had a so so story to tell so she had to fill in the balnks with something, she chose more sex, more innuendos, very boring.I thought the best part of the book was the last page Where Are They Now "four year's later."I skimmed the book until the end because I was stuck on an airplane for many hours, if not I would have passed this book to someone else. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Oh Baby!
From the moment you enter Jessica and Nat's world, you immediately become immersed in the story. The well developed plot coupled with highly sensual love scenes, makes for a winner.I hadn't read the 3 preceding books, but after completing this, I purchased them to find out about the sub-plot characters. The main characters are an heiress with a thing about independence and a real estate mogul back from a year long stint overseas who's been working with orphans.Nat who has issues from his own childhood, is unaware that he has fathered a child. This knowledge wreaks havoc on their relationship, butforces each of them to compromise, which is what life is ultimately about.Even though this book is a little longer than the average Harlequin or Silhouette publication, it doesn't contain a lot of nonsensical jibberishsome authors use just to keep the storyline moving.I enjoyed the book and would purchase more from this author in the future. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't finish a single story
From the back cover:

DANGEROUS LOVER by Anne Stuart
Emma O'Bannion has been entertaining herself with romantic daydreams about the mysterious, gorgeous Frenchman who's moved into her New York apartment building. On a whim, she decides to act on her instincts for once, and ends up in water so hot that her heart may never beat normally again!

ONCE UPON A MATTRESS by Vicki Lewis Thompson
Amelia Townsend's Bedroom Fantasies stories is a tremendous hit, but being the boss has definite drawbacks. Though she feels a bit awkward indicating any personal interest in her deliveryman, Will Murdock, the guy makes her salivate every time he muscles a mattress onto the truck. And now he's asked for her advice on waging a secret admirer campaign for another woman!

SPECIAL DELIVERIES by Marisa Carroll
Nine-year-old Dani Jensen and her little sister think Christy, their new neighbour, and their dad would be a really good match, and Dani has figured out a perfect plan to get them together. Unfortunately, the anonymous cards the girls have been sending prompt Christy to go to the authorities, and the path that was supposed to lead to romance for Del Jensen points to the police station instead!

And my review:

Don't understand all the rave reviews on this page.

I thought that the hero in Anne Stuart's DANGEROUS LOVER was creepy. Okay, so he wants to check out his tenants and make sure that none of them are spies (understandable, since he's trying to get out of the espionage business, and doesn't want anyone knowing who he really is), but to go into a woman's apartment and go through her underwear? That is creepy, and totally against the law! Violation of personal privacy is romantic? I think not. Would readers have found it romantic if he also put listening bugs or hidden cameras in her apartment, too? Ick.

I didn't expect much for Vicki Lewis Thompson's ONCE UPON A MATTRESS, as I'm not a fan of this author. I find that she does the sexual tension well (if a little heavy-handed at times), but neglects to develop a real relationship to back it up. Great sex is not enough of a reason for a couple to be together. If it was, I think we'd see a lot fewer divorces these days!

Marisa Carroll is actually a pen name for two authors who write as one. And I've yet to read a collaboration that was any good. SPECIAL DELIVERIES was no exception. For instance, there's all this buildup that one-time lovers Del and Christy are finally going to come face to face again after years apart. The doorbell rings, Del is on the other side....and the scene abruptly ends, with the very next scene going to that night with Del talking to his daughters! We don't get to a see a single word or look exchanged between the two main characters.

Uh, hello? The interaction between hero and heroine is what romance readers want! You can't cut that part out! How are we supposed to watch the sparks fly when you won't even show when the characters are in the same room? Lingering thoughts about each other are not enough. We need interaction here! It would be like trying to watch a wrestling match where the opponents have to be in seperate rings and can't even touch one another; it just does not work. Note to the author(s): if you can't handle writing actual scenes between the hero and heroine, then DON'T WRITE ROMANCE! Don't take the lazy way out and skip the most important parts altogether. Grr.

All of these stories were flawed. I've read novellas before, and not all of them are this bad. Some authors can handle the very short page restrictions, some can't. This collection is not recommended by this reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect erotic valentine story.
I have long thought Anne Stuart's "Dangerous Lover" is just about perfect as an erotic Valentine fantasy tale. I reread it from time to time and it retains its charm. Warning: don't expect logic or reality. That's not what this is about.

1-0 out of 5 stars Oh my...
I'm not sure how to describe something this horrible.I usually can't stand to not finish a book, but this was one that definately didn't get finished. The two stories I managed to read were cheesy and the characters pathetically desperate. At the end of both the authors suddenly tried to convince us that the pairs were heavenly matched and wanted to marry, but it rang hollow to my ears.I would have been satisfied, and it would have made for much better stories, if they just ended up in a serious relationship - marriage did NOT need to be mentioned.

So I guess my final says is - unless you find it for free on a trade book shelf and you like reading sappy novels with bad follow-through and dialog that makes you groan in misery, don't waste your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice touch!
Three Tales with Stuart being the strongest

Dangerous Love by Anne Stuart - has Emma wondering about her mysterious new neighbour, so with a little prodding by the super, so makes moves to get her noticed. And boy dies her notice!

Once Upon a Mattress - Vicki Lewis Thompson - is about a woman running a store selling mattresses - but suddenly having eyes only for the deliveryman.Only he is asking her how to win the hand of a woman - someone else!!

Special Deliveries - Marisa CarrollHas two kids playing match maker. They think their dad and their new neighbour would make a perfect couple so they begin a campaign of secret admirer notes - instead of getting them a new mom, it has her running for the police!

4-0 out of 5 stars Thanks to the Stuart story, I bought and kept this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
Here I am, late to the party. Not because I just read the book, but because I didn't think to check on reviews here until now. I see one yay and one nay so I thought I'd share my .02 worth.

I love this book. I love everything about it. The characters, Molly and Alec, are fantastic. Molly is a talented writer, but unsure of herself. Sweet and loving and beautiful to boot. I see why Alec is having fantasies. And Alec, well he's my favorite hero to date. I love the sweet, fumbling, humble, but sexy guy and I don't find him very often. Together these two are incredible. I have literally, hundreds of books, probably read thousands, and this is one I keep coming back to time and time again. From beginning to end it's just great. The love scenes are sweet and hot. Just the way I like them, but there's enough emotion in here to make me cry. Bravo!

1-0 out of 5 stars Trash
This is a terrible story with terrible writing. Molly and Alec are friends first; Alec has been Molly's chauffer for about 6 months. Molly is a ghostwriter who wants to break into erotic literature, and Alec is a confused young 20something with no ambition and no usable skills. Molly and Alec hook-up sexually after exchanging just a few words. The book was terrible - the writing was drab and uninteresting, the characters were shallow and lifeless, and the `romance' was barely lukewarm - definitely not `heat.' Awful book, awful writing, a major ZERO RATING.

5-0 out of 5 stars Winner of the WordWeaving Award for Excellence
After ten years of college, Alec Masterson is working on his fifth choice of a major and paying the bills by working as chauffer. Little does he suspect that his favorite client, Molly Drake, has him starring both in her fantasies and in her latest novel. Then Alec's actions as a Good Samaritan result in his being late to pick Molly up for an extremely important train ride into the city. Consequently, he offers to drive her from her home in Connecticut to her appointment in New York City. Anticipating good news regarding her latest literary venture, Molly says she hopes they will have something to celebrate on the way home.

A successful career ghostwriting cozy mysteries has Molly longing to have her own name on a book spine. Shifting genres, Molly pens a sensual romance. Unfortunately, her editor rejects her effort, suggesting she needs to get beyond her contrived and stilted sex scenes. Stunned and more than a little disappointed, Molly decides she needs practical experience. Soon Alec offers to help her "research" and they begin what believe to be a fling. It does not take long for them to drive each other wild!

Once again Vicki Lewis Thompson pens an absolutely sizzling romance in DRIVE ME WILD. Thompson's gift for bringing together opposites who refuse to compromise their intrinsic identities allows her characters to embrace their differences and revel in their individuality in a story where everyone wins. Moreover, Thompson breaks new ground as Molly and Alec daringly indulge their wildest fantasies, which could easily result in her fans rushing to the local video camera department. Indeed, Molly and Alec's naughty escapades will certainly inspire the most jaded of readers! This amusing romantic romp is filled with sensuality and sexuality while still providing a marvelous plot that really keeps the pages turning. DRIVE ME WILD earns the WordWeaving Award for Excellence. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Show me your nerdy feathers...
First a warning, this is not a continuation of the first book in this "series". It's a totally different story. I thought it would be the same characters and was utterly confused for the first several minutes until I realized it was more of a formula... nerd lusts after woman, woman ignores nerd, woman gets into trouble, nerd rescues woman, they have lots of sex and live happily-ever-after. Not that I'm saying that's a bad thing, but that seems to be the formula from just the first two books.

This one's story was okay, it kept my attention and was a really fast read. I found parts of it to be way too far out there for me, just unbelievable, but then again, it's fiction, right?

The biggest problem for me was that I don't think the author did a good enough job of convincing me that Harry was nerd material. They even say in the description that he has "sexy good looks" so the fact that they ended up together didn't feel too over-the-top.

Worth a read, it's a beach read, a little bit of romance, some funny moments. But don't expect a true nerd in this one...

3-0 out of 5 stars Not nerdy enough for me
I have read some of this author's other "nerd" books and my one complaint is always that her nerds aren't nerdy enough. They may seem nerdy on the outside but they usually have a nice body under all those clothes or a good looking face once they take off their glasses. The hero in this book, Harry, falls into the same category. Although he seemed a bit more nerdy than her usual characters. The heroine's son Dexter, a 4 year old genius, is sooo cute and I loved those parts with him and Harry. The book was a nice quick read and I liked that he was an accountant and she was a showgirl. I laughed out loud a few times. This author writes well...my only suggestion is to please "nerd up" your men more.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad for a day at the beach...
This was a great book when you're in the mood for some fluffy romance.Ms. Thompson has a knack for making a nerd sexier than anyone else I know. But, her stories still leave a lot to be desired in the depth category.

It was a perfect read for the beach, but that's pretty much the only place it has real merit.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good fun read
I thought this was an enjoyable read. For some reason, my toddler thought the photo on the cover was me and his Dad. [Smile.] I recommend this to anyone who likes a good romantic read.

3-0 out of 5 stars disappointing
This was rather disappointing. I love brainy characters, and I enjoyed the first book in the Nerd series: Nerd in Shining Armor, but this one fell flat.

Harry, the Nerd from the title, has, according to the cover: "...an I.Q. higher than Einstein's..." We get told this very often, but the only evidence we see of it is that he works as an accountant, and can lose at chess to a 4-year-old. Most of the time, he's just a stereotypically unathletic doofus, except when he gets protective about Lainie, the heroine.

Likewise, his big problem is that he hasn't found a woman he's attracted to who can keep up with him intellectually. I actually like this problem, because I think being able to communicate is hugely important in a relationship. But again, we never really see it. A couple of times, he tries to convince Lainie (and himself?) that her photographic memory and intuition means she's smarter than the rest of her fellow showgirls, but we never, for example, see him trying to talk to someone who just can't keep up.

The bulk of the story is taken up by Harry's retired-showgirl mom, her maybe-mafia boyfriend, and their group of friends while they try to keep Lainie's ex-boyfriend and father of her son from catching up to them.

There are some funny moments in the book, none of them really having to do with the apparent main characters. The laughs are worth the reading time, and if you subscribe to the notion that smart people are really doofuses, you'll probably like the book a lot better than I did.
