5-0 out of 5 stars Good
This is the textbook for my applied linear model course. The book itself fits most ordinary students, whether they are in stat or non-stat majors. Just be sure you have the prerequisites such as basic stat concepts and techniques. It's thick. Text is not short. Well organized though.
If you care about money, don't buy the US version Applied Linear Statistical Models. Just go somewhere else and grab the international version. It's the same...and much cheaper...comes with CD and wrapped...

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Condition, slow arrival.
The book came in in perfect condition, it was very inexpensive and the purchasing experience was very easy. The only catch was the slow delivery, toward the end of the announced time frame - it said 4-14 days, it arrived on day 14. But, I prefer to save $100 and wait 2 weeks, than the alternative.

1-0 out of 5 stars SLOW
"SLOW SLOW SLOW SLOW SLOW SLOW SLOW SLOW SLOW SERVICES, DON'T BUY IT FROM THIS SELLER. IT WILL TAKE DAYS BEFORE YOU CAN HAVE YOU BOOKS, PROBABLY AFTER YOUR MIDTERMS."

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than most textbooks on the topic
Among books on this topic, this one is pretty good. For those that may not have obtained the material sequentially, the appendix is recommended. I can see some giving it lower marks, as it does not fully treat the topic in terms of matrices. I however, prefer that. There is a one chapter that does go through the matrix math as a review.

I do wish there was a companion answer key for all of the problems in the book. Also, at times, a few of the problems are a bit contrived in the sense that the answer was so odd that you couldn't tell if it was the answer you were suppose to get or if you'd run the regression incorrectly.

3-0 out of 5 stars Misleading information
I was expecting to get a CD with the book (per the information given in Amazon), but there was no CD included.. ... Read more

Product Description
Applied Linear Statistical Models 5e is the long established leading authoritative text and reference on statistical modeling, analysis of variance, and thedesign of experiments. For students in most any discipline where statistical analysis or interpretation is used, ALSM serves as the standard work. The text proceeds through linear and nonlinear regression and modeling for the first half, and through ANOVA and Experimental Design in the second half. All topics are presented in a precise and clear style supported with solved examples, numbered formulae, graphic illustrations, and "Comments" to provide depth and statistical accuracy and precision. Applications used within the text and the hallmark problems, exercises, projects, and case studies are drawn from virtually all disciplines and fields providing motivation for students in virtually any college. The Fifth edition provides an increased use of computing and graphical analysis throughout, without sacrificing concepts or rigor. In general, the 5e uses larger data sets in examples and exercises, and the use of automated software without loss of understanding. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for a Statistics Student
As a Statistics student, I love this book. However, it is probably best for an upperclassman in a statistics program or a first year master's degree student. Our school uses the first half for the business students taking regression and even though they use it, I think it is quite challenging for them. Also, if you want only the first half of the book, you can buy Applied Linear Regression Models.

This book is not the be all and end all of statistics books, but it gives a basic overview of many topics. It is easy for someone with a background knowledge in basic statistics to read. If you want to know more about a topic, there is a bibliography. I like to read first from this book, to get a general idea about the concepts and then go to a more difficult text for all the details.

My book came with a CD, which I have never used because all the data and the student solution guide (odd answers) are online through mcgraw-hill.

2-0 out of 5 stars This book could be rewritten in a more concise way.
Despite that many reviewers give this book five stars, I insists on giving it two stars for the fact that the book is unnecessarily long and can be written in a more concise way. For example, Chapter 26 introduces the balanced nested design then introduces the unbalanced nested design, where the balanced design is introduced more rigorously than the unbalanced design (which is introduced by an example only). Since balanced design is just a specially case of unbalanced design, the authors could simply give a rigorous description on the unbalanced design and state the balanced design as a special case.

There are too many unnecessary examples which only make the book longer rather than make the concepts clearer. For example, the difference between nested and crossed factors should be explained in a more abstract way rather than using a very concrete example with reference to "Atlanta", "Chicago" and "San Francisco". The detailed example doesn't help reader understand the concept better. Even if the example is used to introduce the concept of the nested design, the exampled should not be referred again in the the subsequent sections, otherwise the readers has to understand the example in order to read the sequent sections.

Another shortcoming in the book is the lack of cross reference. For example, on page 1091, it says, "As usual, when all means responses are of equal importance we define ...". What does "As usual" mean here? The author should include a reference here on where the book first define a similar quantity.

The overall structure of the book seems disorganized. ANOVA deosn't seem to be that complex, while this book takes over a thousand pages. Other books, such as "Applied Regresion Analysis & Generalized Linear Models" by John Fox, take much less number of pages, although Fox's book may be a little bit too concise for the first time ANOVA learner. But I do think "Applied Linear Statistical Models" should be shorted by having less detailed examples, more cross references should be included, and the structure of the book should be organized to reflect the logic between different methods.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Text
This is an excellent book, especially that it has many relavent updates over the previous edition (which I also own.)

I've found this an excellent textbook in both undergrad and graduate classes. It covers a wide variety of issues experienced in regression with (I have only used the first half of the text) how to diagnose them and how to fix them. Great book to have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Textbook
While I am trying to block my memories of college statistics, I have to admit that this was our textbook and it is well written, helpful, lots of good exercises-- and I did get a B+ in the class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Up to the mark!
This is the best textbook on linear statistical models that I have come across so far (after four courses in stats). It is well structured, concise, and respectful of the reader (does not overload you with examples but emphasizes important points), and - yes - it is very thick (~2.5 inches). Aesthetically, the book is formatted with style and elegance. ... Read more

Product Description

Breast cancer remains a disease of considerable public health importance worldwide, with over 800,000 new cases diagnosed globally each year. Considerable energy is currently being spent by researchers to further our understanding of this complex disease, however, keeping up with all of the new data is a real challenge given the sheer volume of information that becomes available on a daily basis. The purpose of this book would be to provide a comprehensive review of breast cancer epidemiology, covering the topics of disease burden, etiology, risk factors, prevention, early detection/screening, treatment, and outcomes. The book would be a single comprehensive source of the most recent information on breast cancer epidemiology, and it would serve as a valuable resource for breast cancer researchers across disciplines regardless of what stage of their career they are in. To the knowledge of the editor, no such resource is currently available.

Product Description

New focused text introduces readers to wetland ecosystems and systems approaches to studying wetlands

With its comprehensive coverage of wetland science, management, and restoration, Mitsch and Gosselink's Wetlands has been the premier reference on wetlands for more than two decades. Now, the coverage of specific wetland ecosystem types from earlier editions of this acclaimed work has been updated, revised, and supplemented with additional content in order to create this new text focusing exclusively on wetland ecosystems. This book now complements Wetlands, Fourth Edition.

Following an introduction to ecosystems in general and wetland ecosystems in particular, Wetland Ecosystems examines the major types of wetlands found throughout the world: coastal wetlands, freshwater marshes and forested swamps, and peatlands. The final chapter reviews three fundamental systems approaches to studying wetlands: mesocosms, full-scale experimental ecosystems, and mathematical modeling.

This new text features:

  • Updated descriptions of the hydrology, biogeochemistry, and biology of the main types of wetlands found in the world
  • New content introducing general ecosystems, wetland ecosystems, whole ecosystem and mesocosm experiments with wetlands, and systems ecology and modeling

  • A detailed description of the ecosystem services provided by wetlands

  • A broad international scope, including many examples of wetlands located outside North America

  • Two new coauthors offering new perspectives and additional insights into the latest ecosystem and modeling techniques

An abundance of illustrations helps readers understand how different biological communities and the abiotic environment in wetland ecosystems interact and function. Tables and text boxes provide at-a-glance summaries of key information. Lastly, each chapter concludes with a list of recommended readings.

This text has been designed as an introduction for students and professionals in wetland ecology and management, general ecology, environmental science, and natural resource management. ... Read more

I bought the book second hand in very good condition and after reading some of it, I know why it was in such good condition.I got very little out of it.The flow was very hard to follow and the examples seemed disjointed from the text.I would not recommend this book at all.,

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Impressed!
By the name "Professional" I expected a book that would pick where most "Beginning" CSS books left off. This book is mostly filled with case studies, that is it showing the code of several web sites, instead of being an instructional on how to take advantage of CSS's more advanced features. Its defiantly not what it was described as being.

However, it does teach you all the CSS techniques that have been used for the past few years and points you to many resources for more information. I only read this book to review the best practices for using CSS and XHTML. ... Read more

Excerpt: Zhang Lian-wei (born 2 May 1965) is a Chinese professional golfer. Zhang was the first golfer from the People's Republic of China to achieve substantial success on the international professional circuit. In January 2003 he became the first Chinese golfer to win on the European Tour, and the following year was the first to compete in the Masters Tournament, one of the four major championships. Zhang was born in Zhuhai in Guangdong Province. China's first golf course opened in 1984, and Zhang took up the game soon afterwards. He worked as a caddie and won the China Amateur Open Championship three times before turning professional in 1994. Early in his career, Zhang won a number of smaller tournaments around Asia, in China, Malaysia and Thailand. He has competed predominantly on the Asian Tour since 1997, but has also played extensively on the Japan Golf Tour. He has also played outside Asia with limited success. However he did win a tournament in Canada in 2000. Zhang came to global attention at the 2003 Caltex Singapore Masters, where he edged out Ernie Els with a birdie on the final hole to become the first Chinese golfer to win on the European Tour. With this victory he also became the first Chinese golfer to make the top 100 in the Official World Golf Rankings. As a result, in 2004 he received a special invitation to play in the Masters Tournament, becoming the first player from mainland China to compete in the tournament. His invite drew significant criticism, with many players believing that there were other Asian golfers more deserving of a place in the Augusta field. Product Description

The mechanisms by which buildings and infrastructures degrade are complex, as are the procedures and methods for inspection and for rehabilitation.

This book examines the various problems caused by non-uniform deformation changes, poor durability, and natural and human disasters such as earthquakes and fire. Attention is given to the causes and mechanisms of the deterioration. General procedures and commonly used techniques for inspection and evaluation of existing infrastructures are introduced. The desk study, destructive test, and non-destructive test are discussed – in particular the newly developed non-destructive methods for deterioration monitoring. The book then moves on to conventional renovation techniques such as patch and steel plate strengthening, which meet the requirements of normal practice. Special attention is paid to compatibility between repair materials and degraded materials. Fibrous composite materials are then introduced as a basis for innovative repair techniques, and different fibre and matrix properties are outlined, as are newly developed inorganic binders as a matrix for fibrous composites. Finally, advanced rehabilitation techniques using fibrous composite are described. Fundamental issues such as bonding and failure mechanisms are then discussed in detail. Fibrous composite strengthening techniques for beam, wall, column and slabs are covered, including shear strengthening, flexural strengthening, and fillet winding, as are codes of practice for retrofitting with fibrous composites.

This caters to students and academics world-wide and serves as a "tool book" for concrete and structural engineering professionals.
