Product Description
Abstract:Ankle stability is integral to normal motion and to minimizing the risk of ankle sprain during participation in sport activities. The ability of the dynamic and static stabilizers of the ankle joint to maintain their structural integrity is a major component of the normal gait cycle. In sports, this quality assumes even greater importance given the range of movement and stresses imposed on the ankle during various sporting disciplines. In the general population, the incidence of ankle sprain is very high. In several studies, injuries to the lateral ankle ligaments have been shown to be the most common sports-related injuries, accounting for approximately 25% of all sports-related injuries. Furthermore, up to 80% of all ankle sprains involve the lateral ligament complex. Other studies have estimated their incidence as approximately 5000 injuries per day in the United Kingdom and 23 000 in the United States. Aggressive treatment of the sprained ankle is essential to maintain foot and ankle mobility and prevent prolonged disability and subsequent overuse injuries among athletes, both professional and “weekend warriors” alike. ... Product Description
An Excerpt from the book-

Sir, we think not ourselves discharged of the duty we owe
to our friend when we have brought the breathless body to
the earth; for, albeit the eye there taketh his ever-farewell
of that beloved object, yet the impression of the man that
hath been dear unto us, living an after-life in our memory,
there putteth us in mind of farther obsequies due unto the
deceased; and namely of the performance of whatsoever we
may judge shall make to his living credit and to the effecting
of his determinations prevented by the stroke of death.
By these meditations (as by an intellectual will) I suppose
myself executor to the unhappily deceased author of this
poem; upon whom knowing that in his lifetime you bestowed
many kind favours, entertaining the parts of reckoning and
worth which you found in him with good countenance and
liberal affection, I cannot but see so far into the will of him
dead, that whatsoever issue of his brain should chance to
come abroad, that the first breath it should take might be
the gentle air of your liking; for, since his self had been
accustomed thereunto, it would prove more agreeable and
thriving to his right children than any other foster counten-
ance whatsoever. At this time seeing that this unfinished
tragedy happens under my hands to be imprinted, of a
double duty, the one to yourself, the other to the deceased,
I present the same to your most favourable allowance,
offering my utmost self now and ever to be ready at your
worship's disposing.

1-0 out of 5 stars My grandson is 15 & has an interest in languages.
We thought this was CD's ,and we don't have a cassette player, and he thinks it is much more difficult then he had thought. We need to return this for a refund

2-0 out of 5 stars Not really for a beginner
For me, this package isn't well constructed.

Lets take lesson 1 for instance, the very first dialogue we are given is:

Wang xiaojie, hao jiu bu jian! Ni hao!

It then gives the whole conversation before giving the translation in English:

Miss Wang, I haven't seen you in a long time. Hello!

Ok, so how are we supposed to know what word means what when you consider that Mandarin word order is mostly not the same as English?
It then gives 32 words showing how different tones have different meanings. In the first lesson! Are we supposed to remember this?
I'm sticking to Pimsleur.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Program
Perhaps the greatest strength of this program is that it provides a solid explanation of essential Chinese grammar. It really helps with the learning process.

For absolute beginner who'd like to develop conversational proficiency, I'd recommend Pimsleur's Chinese. It will help you to step into the waters of learning Chinese joyfully and effortlessly.Yes, Ultimate Chinese Mandarin does have cassettes, but it's much more challenging to master speaking Chinese with those cassettes than with Pimsleur's program.

While this program does teach you how to read and write few Chinese characters, you may find learning to read and write Chinese easier and more enjoyable with Easy Chinese Tutor CDs, which also provides practice sheets. You can take colorful pens and have hours of fun learning to write Chinese characters, easily and effortlessly.

Rosetta Stone program is very helpful as far as memorizing new words through visual associations.

While no single program is all-encompassing and perfect in and of itself - the above selection of programs can turn learning Chinese from difficult or even impossible task, into enjoyable process that requires much less effort and strugle.

3-0 out of 5 stars Happy to have the affordable review lessons, but ...
I agree with most of the previously written criticisms for this book and tape set.I came to it as a previous student of the language and found that in many ways this was a useful way to refresh a lot of what I'd previously learned. The cost of the set is outstanding, considering a local Berlitz office wanted $25,000!!! for a 6 month course of one on one training.(I suppose we can thank Gov't contracting for that kind of pricing.) While I haven't scoured this book and tape set, I have put the travel tapes to a lot of use and found this approach to covering the lessons to be a good refresher. However, this product could have made the 4 star rating pretty easily if, as a previous reviewer had mentioned, Ms. Humphries had paid a bit more attention to detail.I don't have any examples written out, but in numerous situations on each side of each of the 4 travel tapes the translations are pretty loose.Using the Pimsleur recordings as a comparison, there is NO room for interp on those - giving a pretty secure feeling that you're getting a solid item-for-item exhange of wording ... whereas the "Ulitmate Mandarin Chinese" taped sentances are often frustratingly broad and sometimes inconsistant with other similar sentances/phrases on the tapes. The ?unintentional? benefit for someone in the reviewing process is it gets you thinking more about the options of how say something ... however, for those coming to this stuff new, this aspect would seem to be a bit problematic.

As for the previously mentioned speaker on the tapes with the rushed, slurred speech ... he's a bit of a departure from your usual "Language Tape" dude, but probably useful in terms of dealing with the language as very possibly encountered around the various parts of the "real" Mandarin speaking world. To that end, a very good intermediate level course to check out is another of the "Living Language" series ... "Conversational English for Chinese Speakers".4 tapes of Mandarin phrases (w/english tranlations) by a fluent speaker, speaking to other fluent speakers that are sprucing up on their english.Definitely a workout! But it'll give a real sense of how a lot of basic to intermediate vocab/phrasing would really sound up to speed.Think of it as a somewhat more managable (rewindable) version of the same shock you'll get the first time you step off the plane in Beijing and find out that all the Mandarin Language tapes you've been coddled by for so long ("Wo hen hao.Ni ne?")may as well have been Urdu.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good resource
I used this set on and off for about a year and was surprised at how much I learned. I only got through the first 16 lessons, but I feel that with a more rigorous practice schedule I could have learned much more. My Chinese colleagues were very impressed with my speaking abilites after a few months- I could talk about clothes, food, times and dates, places, and ask simple questions about families and activities.I think I would be ok going to China and checking into a hotel, ordering food, or taking public transportation.
This set has much more material than many book & tape sets. I spent a lot of time on each lesson and studied the book carefully. Many times a new concept will be slipped in to the dialogue a lesson or two before it is formally introduced. I wish the glossaries were more complete, and there are a few odd bits to the recordings (like making the pause too short on occasion), but overall I feel the book and cassette set is well worth the price. ... Editors Note:
Dear Reader,
I am very proud to present to you the very first issue of hE@D Magazine, unavailable until now for over twelve years!
In my first Editor’s note, written back in 1996 I was at a lost for words. Twelve years later I have the cool and wild rollercoaster ride that became hE@D Magazine in my experience- and the respected publication it became, of which I am very proud.
Inspired by Maximum Rock and Roll, Foetus Acid, Warhol’s Interview, EXIT, Mute, and Vanity Fair; I had long wanted to start a “zine” when at a Christmas Party in 1995 that dream started to become reality. Thanks to the hard work, talent and passion Benjamin Pike and Elisa Staneff the first issue was out in January.
This first issue, which you are probably reading in a digital format was originally mass produced via high quality Xerox. Our art director, Benjamin Pike labored and experimented for hours to ensure that the quality of the final books matched what was on his computer screen.
Unfortunately none of the original digital files still exist for issues one and two. Instead I have reverse mastered the original master pages, and these new scans should duplicate the original reading experience of this first issue while still maintaining legibility, readability and quality reproduction of our images.
This first issue was a huge success, and the follow up sealed it. In fact it was too much success (and stress)at the time for a full time film student at UC Santa Barbara (myself) and two people working full-time in their professions. We took a five year hiatus until I was injured in a surfing accident and resurrected hE@D in 2001.
I hope you enjoy this second (digital) edition of hE@D #1.

Product Description
In 1995, the New York Open Center (in association withGnosis Magazine and Oibibio in Amsterdam) invited students ofRosicrucianism and the Western Mystery traditions to Cesky Krumlow inthe Czech Republic to discuss the historical backgrounds ofRosicrucianism. This gathering celebrated the role of Central Europein the spiritual history of the West as well as the work of theRenaissance Hermetic scholar Dame Frances Yates. Two years later asecond meeting was held in Prague to celebrate the Hermetic world ofRudolf II. This book is the result.

In this unique and stimulating collection, John Matthews addresses therelationship between the Grail and the Rose; Christopher Bamfordspeaks of the prehistory of the Rosicrucian reformation in the lateMiddle Ages-among women mystics, alchemists, Cathars, Franciscanspirituals, as well as in Luther and the great Paracelsus; NicholasGoodrick-Clarke tells the wild tale of John Dee's mission to centralEurope; Joscelyn Godwin unfolds the paradigmatic Rosicrucian life ofMichael Maier; Claire Goodrick-Clarke recounts influence of Comenius;Paul Bembridge speaks of Rosicrucian Resurgence at the Court ofCromwell; Rafal Prinke tells the story of the Polish alchemist,Sendivogius; Robert Powell brings together Tycho Brahe, JohannesKepler, and Rudolf II during the Prague Renaissance; and ChristopherMcIntosh speaks of the Rosicrucian Legacy.

Also included are the texts of two Rosicrucian Manifestos, the "Fama"and the "Confessio." Includes numerous illustrations. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great selection of essays.
In light of recent documentary discoveries in a number of European archives, I had high hopes that this volume would further the body of research into the Rosicrucian movement. Ultimately, it did, but in ways I did not anticipate.

There are some essential works here (Joscelyn Godwin's excellent meditation on Michael Maier and Rafael T. Prinke's article on Michael Sendivogius immediately spring to mind: both of which demonstrate the varities of meaning Rosicrucianism took on to those who sought to perpetuate the movement in different contexts) but also much filler. Too many of the contributions collected in this volume re-state a body of knowledge familiar to all students of the subject. Due to the original format of these contributions (i.e., speeches) this knowledge is -understandably- not communicated in a particularly useful fashion.

Having said that, this volume is worth its price of entry. However the content is certainly a mixed bag.
Lastly, the translations of the Rosicrucian manifestos contained in this volume are those of Thomas Vaughan's mid 17th century edition of the Fama and Confessio .

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightenment is eye opening
Before the 'New Age' there was the "Rosicrucian Enlightenment".At the beginning of the 17th century, a new awakening was heralded throughout Europe, announcing the universal reform of all known areas of human activity - religion, science, art, and society were to become one being. The chief proponents of this great awakening were the mysterious "Rosicrucians".Nearly 400 years after the first seeds of this movement were planted, over 100 students, authors, and scholars of traditional Western esotericism, of which Rosicrucianism is the foremost exponent, gathered in the medieval town of Czesky Krumolv in the Czech Republic, to discuss, explore, and in someway, reopen the 'Vault of Christian Rosencreutz' once again.

"The Rosicrucian Enlightenment Revisited" contains nine essays on the early Rosicrucian movement presented at this landmark conference sponsored in part by The New York Open Center, and copies of the first two Rosicrucian Manifestoes, the "Fama" and the "Confessio". It is a great read and ideal for anyone interested in what is truly the heart and soul of Western esotericism - the Rosicrucian Enlightenment. ... Read more

Product Description
For two-semester courses in Art History Survey, Global Art History, and for Introductory Art courses taught from a historical perspective.Exceptional in scholarship and pedagogically in tune with the needs of today's students-rich but never effete-Marilyn Stokstad's Art History is the art history text of choice for a new generation of teachers and students. Presenting a broad view of art through the centuries, it introduces beginning students in a positive and sympathetic manner to the works of all artists. This includes women and artists of color, and the arts of other continents and regions in addition to those of Western Europe and the United States. Balancing both the traditions of art history and new trends of the present, Art History is the most comprehensive, accessible, and magnificently illustrated work of its kind.Amazon.com Review
This attractively packaged two-volume set attempts an almost impossible task: to present the art of the entire world, from vibrant cave paintings dating back 30,000 years to the creative trends of the late 20th century. Though the arts of Europe are the most thoroughly analyzed, respected scholars in several specialized fields cover other cultures with cogent essays. A more unusual feature is the space devoted to art created by women, such as the late-Renaissance painters Sofonisba Anguissola and Lavinia Fontana--the latter was invited in 1560 to be an official painter at the Spanish court. Relationships between the art of different cultures are emphasized and, while each section can stand alone, each is shown to fit meaningfully into the overall development of the world's artistic heritage. Beautiful images grace the production's 1,200 pages, not only well-known icons but a wealth of lesser-known gems are here, carefully chosen to demonstrate the points made in the text. There are many delightful surprises among the illustrations, many of which are in color, printed to high quality standards in Japan. For instance, line drawings explain technical details, from "Lost-wax Bronze-casting" to "Elements of the Skyscraper." A vast amount of information is presented, but it is very well organized and easy to access, and an extensive glossary answers many questions. Marilyn Stokstad's Art History is a true tour de force, and its light and humanistic approach is a refreshing change from previous encyclopedic art-historical studies. --John Stevenson ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible
I haven't recieved this product exactly a month and 2 days ago & haven't seen it. Money was taken out of my account and yet not seen the product do not purchase anything from this company. They just take your money! They haven't sent me a new one & can't tell me where my product is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Above and beyond what I had expected
I paid 80 dollars for a used book online, that I could have gotten on my current campus for just as much. The only difference being was that this product lived up to what was being sold, unlike most used copies one might find and buy on campus. The book was in absolutely great condition for what I paid for and arrived a little earlier than I had expected it to. Definitely worth looking into buying books online.

I got this book rather quickly, but haven't looked through it a whole lot because of its size. Its not easy to carry around to class or to school to study with... its more of a coffee table book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast Shipping and in great shape!
This book is HUGE! Could definitely break a foot if dropped haha! But it is a great buy! Well worth the price (much cheaper than at the college book stores!) Worked great for several of my art history classes at KU. A+++++

Product Description
From Geoffrey Chaucer to e.e. cummings, from William Shakespeare to Anne Sexton, here are the great American and British poems of the last 500 years, organized by subject in a new and provocative way. “Great Poetry is personal,” writes Christopher Burns in his introduction to this extraordinary collection. “Like a seashell held to your ear, a poem resonates to the beating of your heart. The poet brings the words, you bring your life, and together you make the song.”

Poets as diverse as Tennyson and Teasdale echo the themes of “Western Wind” hundreds of years apart. Maya Angelou and Janet Flanders, like talk show hosts sitting on stools, swap stories about their mothers. Robert Browning and Richard Wilbur, separated by more than a century, talk about the way men look at women. Walt Whitman and Allen Ginsberg describe the America each has found. Here are the poems of Edna St. Vincent Millay and Carl Sandburg, often ignored in the last few years, along with the masterpieces of William Butler Yeats, Theodore Roethke, Denise Levertov and Langston Hughes. Some of the poems are funny, others are sad, but all are unforgettable.

Great poetry transcends the boundaries of place, time, gender, and race. Although there was no intention to be representative, half the poems were written by Americans and half by English, Irish, Welsh, Scottish and Canadian poets. And this anthology is modern: a third of the poems were written in the last fifty years and a third were written between 1900 and 1945.

The poems are organized to follow the contours of life: the loneliness of the artist, the uses of war, the role of nature, the constancy of love, and the coming on of death. And like all great poems, they are about you. As you read them, be prepared to hear your own heart roaring in your ear.

Poets represented by more than one poem include: John Ashbery, W. H. Auden, Amiri Baraka, John Berryman, William Blake, Rupert Brooke, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Robert Browning, Robert Burns, Lewis Carroll. Mary Coleridge, e. e. cummings, Walter de la Mare, Emily Dickinson, John Donne, Ernest Dowson, T.S. Eliot, Mari Evans, Robert Frost, Allen Ginsberg, Seamus Heaney, Robert Herrick, Gerard Manley Hopkins, A. E. Housman, Langston Hughes, Randall Jarrell, Robinson Jeffers, John Keats, Rudyard Kipling, Etheridge Knight, D. H. Lawrence, Denise Levertov, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Amy Lowell, Robert Lowell, Archibald MacLeish, John Masefield, Claude McKay, W.S. Merwin, Charlotte Mew, Edna St. Vincent Millay, John Mlton, Sharon Olds, Wilfred Owen, Sylvia Plath, Ezra Pound, Charles Reznikoff, Adrienne Rich, Edwin Arlington Robinson, Theodore Roethke, Christina Rossetti, Carl Sandburg, Sigfried Sassoon, Robert Service, Anne Sexton, William Shakespeare, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Gary Snyder, May Swenson, Sara Teasdale, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Dylan Thomas, Walt Whitman, Anna Wickham, Richard Wilbur, C. K. Williams, William Carlos Williams, William Wordsworth, James Wright, Elinor Wylie, and William Butler Yeats.

5-0 out of 5 stars Making poetry personal again
This is one of those only-book-you-need-on-a-desert-island books. Really.

Christopher Burns has put together a poetry anthology that spans the great, the common, and personal favorites, sometimes separately and sometimes overlapping. His introduction is intelligent and thoughtful. The poems are partnered in ways that elucidate and will make you re-think -- and re-feel -- poems you thought you already knew. This collection manages to "make it new" all over again.I found poems I loved, I found poems and poets I'd never heard of, and I found myself seeing old familiars in totally new ways.

This is what poetry should be -- totally fresh, deeply felt, thoughtfully arranged and articulated. The editor finds new but timeless kinships among poems you knew but had never considered side by side.Carl Sandburg's 1916 poem "Jack" ("Jack was a swarthy, swaggering son-of-a-gun") next to the General Prologue of Geoffrey Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales" shines a new light on both of them.

Sparks fly when you read Robinson Jeffers'"Hurt Hawks" (1924) next to Edna St. Vincent Millay's "God's World" (1913).Such radically different styles, separated by only a decade (and a war). The difference and the common thread are both exposed by the juxtaposition.

This is one of only 2 or 3 poetry volumes that I've found well-formatted for the Kindle. It is indexed, with a good Table of Contents, all the pieces linked as they need to be on such a device. It is such a refreshing collection I wouldn't mind having it on the Kindle and in print.I think the experience of each would be different, and wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular anthology
I'm reviewing the Kindle edition of this book. I wasn't sure what to expect from the Seashell Anthology, never having heard of the Seashell Press or Christopher Burns, but the free sample was enough to convince me that I NEEDED this book. It's a terrific compendium of poetry old and new. The introductory essay is intelligent, and the poems themselves are truly great and well-chosen. Even better, they are so placed that they create new associations for the reader -- three poems about the creation of the world, with three different visions, one after the next, and then seguing into poems about the creative process itself. Even very familiar works like Fern Hill read differently when placed between other poems that connect to it somehow thematically.

Plus, the formatting is pretty good, as verse on the Kindle goes -- not perfect (there are some odd breaks and spacing issues), but very readable.

As a physical book, I would never have purchased this -- I have too many of these poems in other anthologies or various "collected works." Some of the most famous works in the English language are here, and if you are interested in poetry at all you probably have them on a shelf somewhere too. But so many of my favorites in one easy-to-navigate (the table of contents is great, you can jump to sections or to a particular poem in a snap), reasonably priced, portable file that can travel with me? That is just what I wanted -- and the unfamiliar poems (all of the ones I've read so far are wonderful) and the great work by the anthologist are an unexpected bonus.

If you have even the slightest interest in poetry, I can't recommend this anthology highly enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect collection for any bookshelf
This inclusive book of poetry has something for everyone--even those who don't like poetry.Burns, the editor, has collected his own favorite poems in one volume, then arranged them under different headings based on their themes. The poems range from Chaucer and Shakespeare to "Jabberwocky" to poems written in the late 20th century. The collection is eclectic, but somehow is held together by the different headings.I can't keep my copy on the shelf, as people are constantly discovering the book and borrowing it.Definitely worth the read. ...
