Product Description

"Everything I know about life, I learned from The Andy Griffith Show," says Joey Fann, author of The Way Back to Mayberry and founder of BarneyFife.com.

Millions would agree. Many factors contribute to the continued worldwide success of the television classic that made a smalltown sheriff, his son Opie, Aunt Bea, and a comedic deputy famous. Fans know the most important element of this popularity is the program's emphasis on basic moral principles; almost every episode provides a lesson, a good example, or helpful word.

Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of The Andy Griffith Show, this new edition of The Way Back to Mayberry draws out the subtle parables found in thirty favorite episodes, including "Opie's Charity," "Man in a Hurry," "Andy on Trial," "Barney and the Choir," "Deputy Otis," "The Jinx," "Sermon for Today," and "Christmas Story." Also includes 32 black & white photographs.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just a good book
It's a good book about a good TV program that aired in a good time. There are lots of good stories about basically good people learning some good lessons to live by. I grew up during the Mayberry RFD/Andy Griffith Show era. I think I've seen nearly every episode. It was a good program.
Fann stirred up ltos of memories in recounting many episodes of the TV program. Using various characters and situations, he draws analogies and lessons for life and how to live a good, decent, moral life. This is not a bad book.
However, I missed the gospel in The Way Back To Mayberry. God is spoken of (more in terms of His desire for us to live a good life); Christ is mentioned (more in terms of the teachings for living), but the fact of Christ's coming to die for the sins of man so we might live a life pleasing to God is sadly almost entirely missing. Perhaps it was implied; but it's troubling to only imply the gospel when stressing the desirability of living a simple and good life - back in Mayberry. A mature Christian will find this of some sentimental value, but too shallow for any real impact. A young Christian might enjoy the simplicity portrayed, giving a goal to shoot for, but no real help in how to actually live this way - other than to "go back to Mayberry." I would even consider it a dangerous book in the hands of unbelievers. They are going to be told "God smiles on Mayberry. Live like they did on a TV show and you'll be okay in My eyes." They will not be told, even in the midst of what are clearly decent moral principles - you need to repent and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.
I have a difficult time recommending this book for serious readers. If you just want a fond trip down memory lane, however, read and enjoy. It does a good job of that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing and heart-warming
This book is a heart-warming collection of lessons learned from 30 episodes from the popular television series "The Andy Griffith Show".Each chapter in the book provides a brief synopsis of one episode, an analysis of the lesson learned by the show characters and an application for our lives today. The author also relates the lesson from each chapter to his own life.He gives the reader a glimpse into his struggles to apply the lesson to his life, and by extension, to our lives as well.

As I was reading the book, I quickly realized that there are many episodes of the Andy Griffith show that I have never seen before.Out of the thirty episodes mentioned, I had probably only watched about 10 of them. It made me curious to find and watch the episodes for each season in order.I don't want to lay out the money to buy the DVDs, but hopefully I can find them online somewhere.

Now as far as using this television show as a Bible study, I found the idea intriguing. My initial reaction was to reject the idea as too lightweight.Christians ought to take the Bible seriously and desire to do serious study. However, the more I considered it; I began to think that it may serve as a springboard for a new Christian to take the plunge into being in a small group. Many Christians in churches want to remain anonymous and not get too involved. This kind of Bible study would be an easy entry point and may help them get past their fears.

The only place I would fault this book is that I thought the synopsis for each episode was too compressed.More dialog snippets would have been nice.Maybe this was a choice by the editor. The book was easy to read.It could be read in one sitting, however, I think the book is better suited to reading it 3-4 chapters at a time and chewing on them for a while.I personally read 10 chapters at a sitting, and I thought that it was a little too much. After all, each chapter has a different life lesson to teach us.The point of the book is to teach such virtues as honesty, helpfulness, compassion, forgiveness, love and fairness.I was blessed by this book and would certainly recommend it to others.

This review was based on a review copy of the book that was supplied to this reviewer free of charge by B&H Books.

5-0 out of 5 stars pleased

5-0 out of 5 stars A Mayberry Fan's Delight
For any Christian Mayberry fan, this book to a delight. I used the book as a daily devotional, hoping it would never end. Every fan quickly recalls the episode being featured, then Joey Fann does an excellent job of extracting a wonderful Christian message from it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for used book
This book was great read. We are Andy Griffith show fans so we enjoyed it. The book was used so can't expect a perfect cover but the interior was perfect for reading. No pages missing and came as it said it would, used and on time.

5-0 out of 5 stars SAY HEY TO GOOBER
this was a very good book. it has a lot of info on george and his life on and off tv. i just wish it had a little more about his life on the andy griffith show. but all and all you can't go wrong with this book. i met george about 10 years ago and he is a vey nice person and very down to earth. good job george i did enjoy the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars George Lindsey tells it like it is, baby!
This is the fourth book I have read on the subject of The Andy Griffith Show... Mr George Lindsey portrayed the character of "Goober" on this show and it's spin-off Mayberry RFD, and also on Hee-Haw. Not many people know that Mr. Lindsey was a student at the American Theatre Wing, attending on the GI Bill, and was trained in the Stanislavski Method of acting. His life story in this book is at once compelling and inspiring, for he truly is a student from the "school of hard knocks". Anyone wanting to know what it was like for a struggling actor starting out in the 50's trying to break into show business, and all the ups and downs of fame that comes with an actor's life, will be fascinated. He tells us in detail about all the people he has known, and experiences--both good and bad, with warmth and a sly sense of humor! He tells some crazy stories about himself that may raise a few eyebrows, but his candor is refreshingly honest in this day and age. I now have a new respect for Mr. Lindsey, and his often misunderstood character, the loveable Goober Pyle. You will too after reading this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Goober Rules!! Great Book!!Should Be on Video!!
Besides of this book having alot of factual data about the reknowned"Andy Griffith Show"and "HEE HAW" .There's also imformation about George Lindsey who portrayed Goober on that show who wasn't quite as popular as Barney Fife but when Don Knott's left the show,I think Goober(George Lindsey)contributed greatly to help keep the show popular until the series ended. Both Andy Griffith and Don Knotts have video biographies about their life and rich careers.I would like to see in the future that both superb actors George Lindsey(Goober) and Jim Nabors(Gomer) will someday deservingly have video biographies. Also Jim Nabors(also from Alabama) needs to write an autobiography about him and his rich career without all the dirt and sensationalism!!It's been long overdue!!We're all anxiously waiting!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Highly Entertaining
A long-time admirer of George Lindsey the actor, I am now also an admirer of Mr. Lindsey as an author and, more importantly, as a fine human being.Although some of the details of his early life were quite sad, this story is an affirmation of the value of determination, hard work, and talent.Once the reader has started, it is hard to stop. The narrative flows nicely, and provides the reader with a wealth of interesting information and insights from a man who has made generations laugh.Thank you, Mr. Lindsey - Well done! ... Excerpt: Thomas Sigismund Stribling (March 4, 1881 July 8, 1965) was an American writer and lawyer. He won the Pulitzer Prize for the Novel in 1933 for his novel The Store. Born March 4, 1881, in Clifton, Tennessee, a small town off the Tennessee River, Thomas Sigismund Stribling was the first child of lawyer Christopher Columbus Stribling and his wife, Amelia Ann (Waits) Stribling. Christopher Stribling had been a soldier in the Union Army, while the Waits family had fought in the Confederacy. Thomas Stribling would later say this resulted in him being a "doubter and a questioner" (Bain, 433). He would go on to use the stories of his parents, grandparents and extended family on both sides to create the realistic depth of his Southern Reconstruction novels. Stribling completed his high school education at the age of seventeen, at Huntingdon Southern Normal University in 1899, in the nearby town of Huntingdon, Tennessee. By this time Stribling was convinced that he was meant to be a writer, having already sold his first story at the age of 12 for five dollars; Stribling was ready to get started with his future in literature. With that in mind, Stribling became the editor of a small weekly newspaper called the Clifton News. Stribling was hoping to use the Clifton News as a launching pad for his writing career, unfortunately Stribling was only there for about a year before his parents convinced him to return to school and complete his education. In the fall of 1902, Stribling graduated from the Florence Normal School, what is now recognized as the University of North Alabama, in Florence, A...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=4482997 ... The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.
The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.

4-0 out of 5 stars I love the Series... not too crazy on the artwork!
Ok, I love the whole series and loved reading this one as well.I was born in the 80's afterall. But the drawings don't stand up to the earlier works. The faces don't seem to have as much effort put into them as the earlier works. It is still a must have though so that you can see and compare the differences in the books.

5-0 out of 5 stars ARCHIE IN THE AWESOME 1980'S
Archie American Best of the 1980's is the final volume in the Americana series (at least until they to the best of the 1990's!) and contains 17 stories which represent the best and worst of the gaudy, garish decade of the 1980's.Steve Geppi of Diamond Distribution provides the introduction to this volume and relates his own life-long love of Archie Comics. One thing immediately noticeable about this volume is the cleavage on the girls, which was once completely banned back in the earlier days.As with the last couple of volumes the editors selected those stories which documented the many trends and fads from the decade of the 80's.

In "In the Swing" from 1981, Veronica dons the preppie look in a nostalgic look back to the fashions of the 40's.

"Bo Woe" has Vernoica undergoing treatments to give her hair the "Bo Derek" look from the film "10" with braids and beads.Problem is her new hair won't allow her to go out a boat date with a young playboy since she can't get her hair wet.

"The Punk" from 1983 visits the punk music scene as Jughead cuts his hair into a Mohawk and begins calling himself Captain Thrash.Archie does his best to try and save his friend from the punk scene but Jughead has an ulterior motive behind this radical change.

In "Break Dancing Break" from 1984, The Archies are told that the only way that they can get some new gigs is to cut a video. They have a hard time trying to come up with something catchy in their video until they enlist the aid of a group of street breakdancers to help them out.

"Trivia Travesty" finds the gang playing the hottest new board game, Trivial Pursuit but things turn bad for Archie when his answers lead him to getting caught for two-timing Veronica with Betty.

"Wheel of loot" is a spoof on the popular TV gameshow Wheel of Fortune as Betty stands-in for Vanna White as the games letter turner.

In addition to these stories the book features stories on other great and no so great trends of the 1980's including the Urban Cowboy craze, ET the Extraterrestrial, Roller Disco, and Flash Dancing.Even a Michael Jackson-like pop star shows up in the book.As with the other books in this series we also get a couple of cover galleries with sample covers of the 1980's.I've had a chance to review all seven volumes in the Archie Americana series and the set stands as a great testament to the popularity of the Archie character, still going strong after more than 60 years.Throughout all the volumes the editors did a splendid job of choosing stories that were topical and representative of the various time periods.Highly recommended for any Archie fan!

He was chairman of York City F.C. from 2002 to 2003, during which time he was also the owner of York City Racing, a motor racing team competing in the British Touring Car Championship. Batchelor was born in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, where he lived for a short period before moving to Surrey, Kent and Portugal due to his father's work. He received four O-Levels at school and had an exchange year in Oregon, United States, after which he sold insurance door-to-door in East Lancashire.
