One Witness' Memory of the Bear Flag Revolt
The Overland Monthly first published this article in February 1896, Vol XXVII (Second Series).It is the report by Tipton Lindsey of what George W. "Babe" Williams had to say about the Bear Flag Revolt, told at a time 50 years distant from those events.The author of this review did a small private republication of this article in 1996, the sesquicentennial anniversary of the Bear Flag Revolt, with an introduction.In 1846, the time of the Revolt, Babe Williams was a strapping 26 or 27 year old emigrant from Missouri and his report was given at a time when he was in his early 70s, making it difficult to judge the accuracy of his "history."Still, Williams' report has much of interest in it, particularly related to the making of the Bear Flag and the fact that more than one were made; that the bear was standing; and chalk was used in drawing it.

It is an enjoyable read for those interested in the Revolt or its "Bear Flag."
