5-0 out of 5 stars Nancy Drew 06:The Secret of Red Gate Farm
It was so good!!!It all started when Bess bought a bottle of blue jade perfume to when the girls Bess, George and of course Nancy go on a trip to Red Gate Farm and they get themselves into one of the most exciting mysterys Nancy and here friends have ever done.First of all they saw people dancing around with white masks and white costumes and then they sneak into a cave where the groups meetings were but the leader caught them and they had to be there prisoners but then when the leader said they had to escape the group didnt realize that waiting outside was some secret service agents and they were arrested!!!!!Written by Harrison k.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Red Gate Review
In "The Red Gate Farm" I thought that the setting was a perfect place to have the plot. I thought it was a good place because it was a perfect place to have counterfeit money making place where nobody ever goes to and where people would never think of a cave and a farm to do all the making of fake money.
"The Red Gate Farm" was a very good book I thought. The events that I liked were the beginning when the man comes up to Nancy in the train because that's when the first start of the mystery begins to show up. Also I liked how nice and kind Nancy was to Joanne because she was having such a rough time with her grandma's farm. I thought Nancy was nice because she helped Joanne when she fainted from the perfume, and when Joanne needed to find a job and a place to stay for the night. A third thing I liked was how each character acted, like it just gave them character. Like Mr. Kent, Maurice Hale, Mrs. Hale, Nancy, Yvonne, Joanna, and others, but those were the ones I thought were good because how they acted I thought just gave them a lot of a variety in each character. Another thing I liked was when finally they got all their costumes ready to go and sneak into the Black Snake Colony Cult. I thought it was very brave of them all to do this very risky thing to do. When they snuck in and found a lot of information of what the Cult was doing and who a lot of the people were. I guess I just liked how exciting and sometimes suspenseful it was to see what was going on and what was going to happen. Lastly I loved when at the end when Nancy and her friends were caught, and you thought it was the end for them, suddenly you read that the secret service was there to arrest the criminals and then when the mystery was finally solved. I liked the book, but those were the few events in the "Red Gate Farm" I really like.
I really liked "The Red Gate Farm" but there were some thing's I didn't like that much. Some things were that I thought the snake biting George part didn't really matter all that much. Also I thought some things could have been cut out and get right to the point, but I guess the author was just making it a little suspenseful. The things that could have been cut out a little bit were the parts of them making the costumes; to me they weren't that all important. Also I thought that some of the spying on the Cult wasn't as important because no real significant events happened, and sometimes the Cult wouldn't even gather, so sometimes I thought it was kind of pointless. Other than those couple of events I thought the book was really good!

4-0 out of 5 stars I thought it was good. Same deal as the others before it.
They all have the same generic plot to them except for
different mysteries. The end was actually surprising
with it's couple of twists. I think this book is where
I end my reading of Nancy Drew. The books were good
and occupied my time in a good way. They were fast
enjoyable reads that I could read in a few hours.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Case of Nancy Drew: An Adult Reader's Thoughts On RED GATE FARM
Originally written by Mildred Wirt Benson from outlines by Edward Stratemeyer, the Nancy Drew series was first published in 1930s. THE SECRET OF RED GATE FARM was the sixth book in the series, and like the earlier books it presented its heroine as a rich, headstrong, and distinctly reckless teenager who sometimes carried a pistol and who wasn't above breaking the law when it suited her purposes.

As the series progressed and other writers began to generate Nancy Drew novels, the character changed and Nancy was "toned down;" instead of flatly rich, she became reasonably affluent; recklessness was replaced by commonsense caution; and while she might be willing to bend the law a bit she would never knowingly break it. In the 1950s and 1960s the earlier novels were re-written to reflect this change in character.

Originally published in 1931, RED GATE FARM was re-written in 1961--but unlike several other re-written titles the story remains much the same.In this instance, Nancy and her friends Bess and George visit Red Gate Farm, where owner Mrs. Byrd is in financial difficulty and has rented a portion of the land to a religious cult. When Nancy becomes curious, she and her friends are threatened by the cult members--and they decide to infiltrate the group's strange gatherings.

It is worth noting that the cult, which is called The Black Snake Cult, dresses in white robes with odd, peaked hoods, and Nancy and the girls consider disguising themselves with sheets and pillowcases the better to spy upon their activities.Given the era of the book's first publication and later re-write, this would seem to be a subconcious reference to the Klu Klux Klan on the author's part!As always in the original series, the story is very much of its era: there are no cell phones, computers, or modern gadgets, and Nancy is very much an ideal of the time: she can sew, herd a cow, treat a snakebite, and still seem to dress appropriately for all social occasions.

The Nancy Drew books are not great literature by any stretch of the imagination--they are too distinctly formula for that--but they are competently written, literate, and never talk down to their target audience. They are also good "comfort reading" for grown-ups who recall their childhood reading fondly.RED GATE FARM is an amusing read for old fans and newcomers alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING!
i thougth that the book was great. i am a big fan of nancy drew. whoever wrote this book.. (there are various authors) they should write more

4-0 out of 5 stars A book full of mystery
NancyDrew and the lilac inn is a book full of mystery.

From reading the frist 3 chapters the book begins to get puzzling and confussing to the
mind.
The strange avents that follow one after the other make it longer to finish. This book dose not contain the best or average wonder and thrill as the other Nancy Drew books.

You will only very very enjoy this book if you are...
* a person who can really really be paitent and can wait a long time without getting bored
* a person who likes taking risks and likes books with risk takers in them
*a person who likes danger

If you are not a person with all theese guiltys then you will noy strongly like this book.
I recomend that you read Nancy Drew and the Secret of the old attic

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic Mystery
I bought this book for my niece because I remember how much I enjoyed it when I was her age.It didn't dissapoint..in fact it has encouraged her to read more!

5-0 out of 5 stars Double in Disguise
This book is about a girl named Nancy. In this book she goes to the Lilac Inn for her friend's wedding. When she's there she figures out that she has a double. A double is someone that looks exactly like you. Her double is pretending she's Nancy, but at the same time she's trying to kidnap the real Nancy. In the book there are life threatening moments for Nancy. Like when the fake Nancy and her friends put Nancy in a submarine and try to sink her. My favorite part was when there was an earthquake (a fake earthquake). I recommend this book to anyone who likes mysteries and exciting stories.

4-0 out of 5 stars American Classic
"Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott has been undervalued for most of its history. This book is a true American Classic.Published originally in October of 1868, it is a story set during the Civil War, but Alcott does not deal with the specifics of the war.Instead, it serves as the pretext for the absence of Robin March, the father of the four "Little Women", for a large portion of the first book. The novel today actually consists of two books, the original "Little Women" from 1868, and the sequel "Good Wives" which was published the following year in April of 1869.The two volumes started being treated as one in 1880.

The first book deals with the growing maturity of the four sisters, and in particularly of Jo and Meg as they have to learn to help their mother out more and do with less during the war, and while their father is away.Meg is the eldest at 16 when the story begins, and Jo (who clearly represents the author) is 15.There is then a gap of a couple years with Beth being just 13 and Amy 12.Their lives transition from that of young girls to young women, and each sister has her own unique traits.Margaret "Meg" with her beauty is following the traditional path in entering society and heading towards marriage.Josephine "Jo" is attracted by intellectual pursuits, in particular reading and writing.Elizabeth "Beth" is very shy and demure. She is also a peacemaker between the sisters, and enjoys helping others.Sadly, she also falls sick and never fully recovers from scarlet fever.Amy is the baby, and likes to tag along with others. She is also used to getting her own way.

The first book is masterful in its simplicity. The story feels real, undoubtedly largely due to the author drawing on her own experiences, but Alcott also cleverly avoids adding too much into it and thereby making it unrealistic. She chooses a good steady pace, and the characters are well defined and consistently portrayed. Her dialogue is not perfect, but that adds to the overall realism of the telling of the story. It is a wonderful story for young women to read, and is also very readable for older readers.

The second book is fairly good too, though it fails to be as believable as the first book as Alcott allowed herself to be convinced to have Jo marry.Alcott never married, and the union she chooses for Jo is a bit unusual and thus it doesn't feel right.Outside of that, though, the second book is a worthy successor to the first.Meg's choice of husband fits perfectly with the character and ideals that she develops in the first book. Most of Jo's actions in the second book also fit well with her character up, including her avoiding marriage with Laurie, her friend and neighbor who plays an important role throughout both books.Only at the point where Jo marries does it not fit.The tragedy of Meg's passing is beautifully described, and the reader is touched by the goodness of her character.Lastly, the full development of Amy fits well, including her choice of spouse.

The Penguin Classics edition of "Little Women" includes a very informative introduction by Elaine Showalter and extensive notes by Siobhan Kilfeather and Vinca Showalter. One of the important notes is that this edition is based on the original publications, and not those which were amended by Alcott for later editions, though obvious printer errors were corrected. There is discussion of some of the changes which Alcott made in the notes to the text. This is a wonderful book, but I will take part of a star away and round down for Jo's forced marriage.

4-0 out of 5 stars A childhood favorite
I like this book because of Jo March. And I never cry when Beth dies, because she annoys me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Nancy Drew Book!
The Bungalow Mystery by Carolyn Keene was a well-written book. It is a good length considering the plot, one hundred and eighty pages. However, there was a lot packed into the last twenty pages. The author described the setting very well. It is summer in River Height and Twin Lakes. The confict of the story was defiantly Person vs. Person. (For Example, Laura vs. Aborns, Nancy vs. Suspects, Nancy vs. Aborns) Nancy always finds herself in a conflict with someone, or something.
There were many characters, but I think the two main characters were Nancy Drew and Laura Pendleton. Nancy Drew is a teenage detective, who has strawberry-blonde hair. She was on vacation with her friend Helen Corning, when they decided to got on their boat on Twin Lakes. Then a big, nasty storm came and they start yelling, "Help!" A nice girl named Laura Pendleton comes to the rescue. Laura is an orphan and could not let them die because she knew how it felt to have someone who she cared about die. Laura told them about her new guardians, the Aborns. Nancy knew them and told Laura that they were very nice people. However, later on in the book Laura does not think that they are so nice. Therefore, she runs away from them and finds Nancy. Nancy lets her stay in her house in River Heights so she and her mom's jewels were safe. Nancy decides to investigate. Nevertheless, if you want to know the twist to the story, you have to read. Many surprises await you.
In every book, there are always more than on message. However, it is always hard to choose the most important on. In this book, the most important message is if you help a friend, they will always help you when you are in need of it. I highly recommend that you read, The Bungalow Mystery By: Carolyn Keene.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Fun Mystery
As a student in middle school, one of our first assignments was to read "The Bungalow Mystery". When we were given the assignment, I primarily thought it was a book for girls. I also had the impression that it might be below my reading level, until I found myself looking up words I did not understand. From the very first sentence, I was hooked and enjoyed it until I finished, even though there were a few slow moving parts. Because this was the first Nancy Drew Mystery I ever read, I didn't understand some of the allusions the characters were referring to in previous books. In conclusion, I feel compelled say that this was a fun mystery, and a novel with a sense of humor. ... Read more

Ellen Gulden comes home to care for her dying mother, who reveals the secrets she has hidden for life and the pain she endures daily, and suddenly finds herself on trial for a crime she could not have committed. Reprint."Amazon.com Review
One True Thing is a film starring Meryl Streep as thecancer-stricken homemaker mother, Renee Zellweger as the daughter whoquits her top-dog job to care for her, and William Hurt as the chillyprofessor who lets the women in the family do the heavy emotionallifting dying requires. But the real star of the project remainsformer New York Times everyday-life columnist Anna Quindlen, who quit her top-dog job to write novels (and who took time off fromcollege to nurse her own dying mother).

Quindlen hit a nerve with One True Thing, which captures anexperience seldom dealt with in popular culture. (One exception: thesensitive 1996 film with Streep and Leonardo DiCaprio of the play Marvin's Room.)Though the heroine of One True Thing, Ellen Gulden, is a goldengirl with two brothers who'll lose her career the instant she stepsoff the fast track, society concurs with her dad, who says, "It seemsto me another woman is what's wanted here."

The book is a mother-daughter tale that should please fans of, say, The Joy LuckClub. It's not flashy, but it has a deep feel for the waychildren often discover, just before it's too late, who their parentsreally are. "Our parents are never people to us," Ellen writes,"they're always character traits.... There is only room in thelifeboat of your life for one, and you always choose yourself, andturn your parents into whatever it takes to keep you afloat." Themercy-killing subplot isn't gripping, but the palpable sense ofdeepening family intimacy certainly is. --Tim Appelo ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Read
Just finished and I have to say it was one of my favorite books ever. Anna Quindlen is a wonderful author.

5-0 out of 5 stars Riveting
One True Thing has all the ingredients: psychology, drama, a strong cast, and a challenging subject. But it takes more than a recipe to make a good cocktail, and Anna Quindlen puts it all together with conviction. The novel's greatest strength is its characterisation, vivid yet subtle, lucid yet eschewing stereotypes, true to life yet interesting. Ellen Gulden is called upon to take care of her mother Kate, who is dying of cancer. The gulf is wide between the daughter, a young and ambitious New York journalist, and her mother, the homebound wife of a small-town English literature professor. Forced to abandon her driven lifestyle, Ellen is confronted with her own choices, with the unequal partnership that is her parents' marriage, and with mortality itself. We learn at the beginning of the novel, moreover, that she will be accused of having ended her mother's life in a `mercy killing'. One True Thing is masterfully told, and it is material for hard, brass-knuckle reflection.

5-0 out of 5 stars A story that every mother and daughter should read
I love Anna Quindlen. I love the way she uses her words, I love her essays and observations, and I'd love to take her to lunch and pick her brain about writing and just bask in her greatness. That said, because I love Quindlen's writing so much, I'm inclined to read anything she puts out -- no matter the topic. "One True Thing" is a book that I'm glad that I read, but it was incredibly hard to get through. It's the story of a young journalist called home to care for her mother as she struggles with cancer. Moreso, though, its a good snapshot of an adult daughter's relationship with her mother, and reminder of ahow surprising it is for some of us to realize that after all those year of raising us, our parents are actually just people. There are a lot of difficult issues tackled in this book, such as euthanasia, and I shed quite a few tears over the story. But I've also read it over at least three times. Don't forsake the book for the movie - like most good writers, Quindlen's characters deserve a look as she wrote them, not as actors have interpreted them for the screen.

4-0 out of 5 stars A REALISTIC TALE
I read an older version of this book, and was moved by it. It made you think. Some parts were depressing but that's how someone who has cancer is. It's about a young woman who quits her job as a NY Journalist to take care of her mother who is dying of cancer. The end will surprise you. It should have focused a little more on her husband though to seems a bit selfish during his wife's illness. That's the only downfall of this book but otherwise it was a beautiful and moving story but sad so please bring some kleenex when reading it. I liked the movie too. Meryl Streep was great as the mother. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Two books, one title
I have a large collection of the original "blue" Nancy Drew books, and every so often I go back and read them, despite the fact that I'm well into my forties.Lately I've been amusing myself by reading the old books, then downloading the newer Kindle editions and comparing them. For the most part, the original editions (now published by Applewood, sadly not available on Kindle) are far better. Not only do they have the charm of roadsters and frocks and chums, but they're simply better written. They flow well, and don't have that cut-down, spliced-together feel of the newer editions. Also, the original Nancy has a certain devil-may-care, reckless attitude the newer Nancy is missing.

THE SECRET OF SHADOW RANCH is the one exception I've discovered so far to this rule.As a few reviewers have mentioned, the original edition is hardly a mystery at all.Nancy doesn't spend her time sleuthing; she and her "chums" learn to ride, then repeatedly go up into the mountains, getting lost and facing down bobcats, mountain lions, and rushing rivers. All of which may be exciting, but has little to do with the Nancy Drew most of us know. The book does introduce Bess and George, but otherwise, it's not really worth your time. The mystery is very slight, and is solved at the end through Carson Drew's efforts, not Nancy's.This is the one older edition that's better left on the shelf.

The newer edition, on the other hand, starts with excitement and mystery, and never really lets up.There's a "phantom" horse (of course Nancy figures out what it really is!), bad guys, good guys, a treasure concealed where only our redoubtable heroine can find it...It's a surprisingly good read, and doesn't have that choppy feel (perhaps because it was written from scratch, rather than cut down from the original).Overall, the newer edition is an enjoyable book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rachel's Point of View
This is my favorite Nancy Drew book.It starts off with Nancy,Bess, and Gorge. They were at the airport and they ate at a cafe. This is when Nancy first heard about the mystery.(you can read the book to find out what the problems are.) Turns out one of the bad guys heard them talk about this.He gave them two warning notes. That is only the beginning of the book.I would have to write about twenty pages(but I am not going to)to describe and tell you what happens in the book. For mystery lovers,I highly recommend this book. (p.s. Nancy Drew rules!!!!!!)

5-0 out of 5 stars good read
I use to read these in middle school and just wanted the collection- they kept me out of a lot of trouble- :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Totally Great!!!
This is one of the best Nancy Drew books in the series! It is impossible just to read one chapter. Carolyn Keene really set off the series with this book.
Nancy Drew is at a ranch that is haunted by a phantom horse, that was from an outlaw years ago. The horse appears at Shadow Ranch at night and after he leaves something teribble faithfully happens.
The young sleuth has to find out who the culprit is. Could it be Dave Gregory, Shorty Steele, Walt Sanders, Tex Britten or his pal Bud Moore?
Find out in this awesome book, The Secret of Shadow Ranch.

5-0 out of 5 stars good. reminded me of a movie i liked when i was little.
I thought it was really good. I love how these books are short, but getyou really into the story. The author definitely doesn't fill the pages with useless boring information. The books are easy fast reads and I love how every person in the book is there for a reason. The book reminded me of the Mary-kate and Ashley movie that I watched when I was little called "How the West Was Fun" because it was also about a ranch and treasure too.

thank you for your time

5-0 out of 5 stars The Clue in the Diary
This was my very first Nancy Drew book. Yep, and I a little older than what would be considered young adult these days! Tee Hee! I am hooked. I will tell you I was a little afraid of starting with Book 7, but I didn't feel left out at all. The author made it possible for me to catch up with Nancy, her family and her friends. I even got to meet the new "guy". I love stories about diaries, add in a mystery, a fire, some great adventures and a romantic interest, and I was extremely happy. Now, I will say that I did find some parts that dated the book, but for the most part I was very happy living in Nancy's world and I expect to do so again very soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wounderful read
I think the book is great and full of suspense. Nancy, Bess and George are driving in a beautiful neiborhood when suddenly a grand house bursts into flames. Nancy later learns it was home to Felix Raybolt. "Foxy Felix" stole peoples inventions, and one of his victems is Joe Swenson. Joe is getting acused for setting the Rabolt house on fire, and only Nancy Drew can clear his name... ... Read more

Product Description
Set in 1964, Barefoot in the Park follows the lives of newlyweds Paul and Connie Bratter as they adjust to married life in a tiny Greenwich Village apartment. Paul is a lawyer who’s wound up a little too tight, while Connie is a free spirit bubbling over with romantic notions. In typical Simon style, all manner of comic chaos ensues as the Bratters’ marriage begins to collapse under the pressure of a five-flight walk-up, a skylight that leaks snow, an eccentric neighbor who must climb through their apartment to get to his, and Connie’s misguided attempt to marry off her mother. Acclaimed playwright, Neil Simon, is a Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning author. “Neil Simon’s comedy Barefoot in the Park is 30-something now, but its newlywed protagonists, the Bratters, remain forever young.” — The Dallas Morning News ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Adorably Entertaining Play
I first heard of this play from my good friend, who happened to see it performed in Central Park. I later saw this old copy of the play laying around my high school stage office, and picked it up, remembering my friends mention of it... upon finishing the play (within two days, I could NOT put it down) I realized I have NEVER laughed so hard outloud while reading any sort of literature.. it is witty, comical, and softly but lovingly expressing the hardships of the first days of marriage and living together with your beloved. I highly highly highly recommend picking this up for a mood-lifter, or just a good laugh. It is light and entertaining and very cute!

5-0 out of 5 stars The adventures and foibles in beginning married life
Barefoot In The Park is the complete and unabridged ninety minute audiobook presentation of a classic Neil Simon romantic comedy. Wonderfully performed by Laura Linney and Eric Stoltz, Barefoot In The Park is the flawlessly recorded production that tells the story of a new lawyer and his young bride, the adventures and foibles in beginning married life, complicated by an uptight mother-in-law and an eccentric gourmet chef who lives in a loft on the roof of their apartment (their window ledge is the only access to his padlocked premises). A superb choice for any personal, school, or community audiobook collection, Barefoot In The Park is also available in a CD format... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth Reading MANY Times
I grew up on Nancy Drew.I matured on Nancy Drew. And I'm bound and determined to spend my Golden Years re-reading Nancy Drew! One of the neatest things is the perspective. These were written before I was even a glimmer in my Mom & Dad's eyes.Heck, they were written even before Mom & Dad had even laid eyes on one another.Women's Lib (the way it's defined today) didn't exist. And yet the Heroine is a Girl! She wasn't rebelling against the Glass Ceiling Society. She was just doing what she did best.Seeing and listening, remembering and putting 2 + 2 together to make 4.Solving the Mystery in the process.I can see the Deus ex Machina. So what.

You don't have to read them in order. But I am so very grateful that they are all available. From 1 to who knows???(I don't.I'm only on 19 now.I'll be ordering 20 - 25 once I get done here!!!)

The Kindle Version is as good as the Hardcopy. They've included the Drawings AND the Copyright Page. The Table of Contents works ... not that I ever give it a chance to do so since I read from page 1 to the end.Not at one sitting, although you could since they aren't humongous!!!

Bottom line:If you enjoy Mysteries and don't need a lot of blatant sex & violence or foul language to enjoy a book, then Nancy Drew will give you at least an hour or two of pleasure!!!There's fast action and not a lot of boring "gotta add words just to make the book bigger".

5-0 out of 5 stars When there's a will there's a way!

Nancy Drew: The Secret of the Old Clock by Carolyn Keene is an awesome mystery book! It is about a girl, Nancy Drew, who goes out to find a will in a clock that could help her friends with their financial situations. One will says that all the money would go to the rich, mean Tophams. But there were rumors that there is another will--and Nancy was determined to find it. To find this will Nancy faces many challenges from trying to get clues out of Tophams to chasing down robbers who had what might be the key to her success. In the end Nancy learns that when there's a will there's way and she is a great detective!
This book was one of the best mystery books I have ever read! There was lots of action, excitement, and mystery. I loved how right when you thought you knew where the will was; there was another clue to be considered. For example, when Nancy found the clock and she thought she had found the will, there was another clue waiting inside. Nancy Drew was very smart and you can tell this book was very well thought out--from the main plot about the mystery, to the tiniest details about how she finds the most crucial clues. This book is amazing and I recommend it to anyone who loves a good mystery!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good start to the "yellow hardcover" series!!
NOTE: The original version of "The Secret of the Old Clock" was written in 1930 and was 210 pages long, but the book I am reviewing is the rewritten version from 1959, and is only 180 pages long, including illustrations.

This book is first in the standard "yellow hardcover" Nancy Drew series, and is definitely one of the better books in the series, suitable to capture the attention of new readers and invite them into this classic world in which any criminal or fraudulent activities become targeted by the relentless teen sleuth!

The standard "yellow hardcover" series generally has three types of books, and this volume is of type number 2:

1. Totally new stories written and published between 1957 and the early 1980s.Most of the yellow books that fall into this category are not that great (for example, Mystery of the Moss-Covered Mansion).Instead of keeping focused on mystery and adventure, they tend to pause the story to include "educational material," and they tend to have over-complicated plots with too many characters that have very little to distinguish them from each other. They feel quite artificial in design and have a bland tone focused more on Nancy's perpetual schedule of appointments, with the mystery often dragged out over a matter of weeks because of trivial obstacles and distractions and runs of "bad luck."Try to identify which books were written in this fashion, and avoid them until you've read all those that were written in the other two styles. The original stories tended to all be much better than these re-writes, although a few of these new stories did turn out okay. One hint to identify which books were these weaker ones is that they were usually written in the late 1960s or early-mid 1970s, and the artwork is often inferior to that contained in the other volumes.Since some decent stories were also written during that same time period, a second hint is that the volumes that were originally written in the 1930s to early 1940s tended not to fare very well in their "yellow edition" re-writes - these primarily include many of the volumes numbered in the teens, but also apply to the majority of new volumes numbered in the late 30s to the early 50s.For example, "The Secret of the Golden Pavilion," which starts okay and then drags out into mediocrity. These types of books are usually readable, but are much slower-going and less interesting than the other two types of stories, described below.New readers may find them okay, but seasoned readers will feel at least a bit of disappointment.

2. Rewritten versions of the old, original stories that were first published in 1930.These types of stories (mostly those re-written before 1965) tend to be pretty good, retaining the ideas of the original novels, but in an updated form that is set in the latter half of the 20th Century rather than the first half of it.They are pretty fun books, even though the writing style is not as moody and detailed as the original, longer versions. Many of the books in this style keep the focus on adventure and mystery, sometimes including long action scenes (such as chases, suspenseful investigations, stakeouts, and faceoffs with criminals in perilous circumstances). These books keep the flavor of what made these stories good. The mystery is usually solved within a week or less, with memorable, swift-moving action and moodiness. The centerpiece of "The Secret of the Old Clock" is when Nancy finds and pursues criminals while looking for a vital clue that will restore swindled property back into the hands of its deserving owners, and this adventure scene moves along for dozens of pages without a break in the suspense, just as the original book had. This style of storytelling is much better than the newer "type 1" stories in which a brief, contrived-feeling event happens at the end of each chapter, only to be resolved quickly on the very next page.(That kind of storytelling was not very memorable.) "The Secret of the Old Clock" starts the "yellow hardcover" series very well, and this good start continues in volumes #2, 3, 6, 7, and 9 in a similar style of memorable storytelling that is faithful to the originals despite being shortened markedly. Those 6 books should probably be read first, and contain some of the best stories in the "yellow hardcover" series. The artwork tends to be quite good, as well!

3. Edited, shorter versions of the original stories that were published from the early 1930s until 1956.These are usually pretty good as well, so long as the original story was of good quality.Examples include "Clue in the Crumbling Wall" and "The Ghost of Blackwood Hall."This style usually covers those books that were originally published from the late 1940s and early 1950s that were re-released with mere editing instead of re-writing, and so these books often retain the flavor of the original stories quite well. These tend to be the volumes numbered in the 20s and early 30s.The quality of the artwork varies from good to fair, but since it's the story that counts, these stories are usually a good bet.

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved it, my 8 year old daughter doesn't...
Since I read somewhere that the older version of Nancy Drew features a younger, feistier Nancy Drew, I opted for this edition of book one instead of the later version from the 50's?.My daughter is an avid reader, who, once enamored of an author, will read that author's entire series, but this is the first book in a year she simply put down and had no interest in.I read it, and being old school, loved the turn of phrase from a bygone era.My daughter would rather read the popular titles that today's kids are reading.I'll try the newer version on her to see if that makes a difference.

Give it a try, but don't be disappointed if your child prefers the likes of Geronimo Stillton, Judy Blume or JK Rowling.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it
