From a Middle-Aged Male Nancy Drew Fan
I grew up reading the Hardy Boys' books, and am an avid reader today of English mysteries i.e. P.D. James, Agatha Christie etc. About eight years ago, while my sister was gravely ill, there was a small collection of 1940's vintage Nancy Drew books at the house where she was living with a friend, and I read one ("The Mystery of the Tolling Bell")for much-needed escapism. I immediately became hooked, eventually reading over fifty titles, making sure to read the original editions.Recently, having forgotten most of the details of the various books, I picked up one of my favorites, The original 1930's edition of "The Secret of the Ivory Charm," and am hooked again! They are pure escapist, excitingfun. I certainly have favorites, such as the original editions of "The Hidden Staircase," (many excellent reviews here), "The Secret of The Old Clock,"The Whispering Statue," etc. etc. but I wouldn't call ANY Nancy Drew boring. Every one is an entertaining page-turner. LOVE all of the secret panels, hidden doors, ghosts, mysterious messages, creepy mansions, sinister eavesdroppers etc.
As many have pointed out here, the original editions of the earlier books are far more detailed and have greater depth. The newer (written in the 1960's and 1970's) are more simplistic and fast-moving, but they too are hugely entertaining.
Of the later books, I particularly like the great "The Phantom of Pine Hill," "The Crooked Banister," The wonderful "Mystery of the Glowing Eye," "the Clue of the Dancing Puppet," and "The Moonstone Castle Mystery."
It is a great pleasure to know that so many young people continue to enjoy these wonderful books.

Great Read
This is one of the best books I have ever read.It was thrilling with tons of suspense, and in some parts pretty scary.If you like Nancy Drew books that aren't scary, this probably isn't the way to go.But, if you like scary Nancy Drew books like I do, this a terrific read!There are really no bad things to say about this book, except it's probably best for older readers, at least 9 or 10 years old.If you want a book to keep you form putting it down with suspense and wondering what's going to happen next, this is a GREAT book.

Great for little kids, but don't read it if your over ten years old.
Nancy Drew Mysteries: The Hidden Staircase by Carolyn Keene is a mystery novel about a young detective named Nancy Drew. While Nancy Drew is sitting at home, there is a knock on the door, and a creepy and suspicious man named Nathan Gombat walks through the door. He claims that Nancy's father, Carson Drew cheated him out of his money when buying some of his land. When Carson Drew returns home, Nancy tells him what happened and he said that he didn't owe him any money. The next day, Nancy visits her friend Abigail's home, where she meets Rosemary, an old lady whose home seems to be haunted. Nancy drives Rosemary home to her haunted mansion and she meets Rosemary's sister, Floretta. At the mansion, things have been stolen, strange shadows have been seen on the walls, and music has been herd in the night. At this point, Nancy is completely puzzled because she finds no clues, hidden passages, secret panels, trap doors, or anything else in the old house. But when her father goes missing after returning from a business trip, she begins to lose interest in the mystery. Desperate for clues, she sneaks into a mansion next door that just happens to be Nathan Gombat's house. Will Nancy find a clue? Will her father be found? Is Nathan Gombat related to the happenings at the mansion?
I read this book for a project, and I do not recommend this book to anyone above the age of ten. The plotline is okay, but after reading the first couple chapters you will already know how the book ends. If you are a good reader, this book will probably not keep you interested because it is meant for early readers. This book was a drag to get through for me because it didn't keep me interested. It is clearly meant to be for little kids. If you are in to easy-reader mysteries, than this book is good for you.
