4-0 out of 5 stars This is very nice as an introduction to FLW
80 pages.12" tall x 9 1/2".Full of 70 color photos. And a coupla drawings, Mile High Illinois and Monona Terrace, quite well presented.24 full page photos and 2 of those cover each facing page and another is a page and a half.Very nice use of the large size of the book that way. There are a number of individual paragraphs about his various buildings next to photos of those buildings. If you love large color photos of his work like I do, you'll want this book, particularly if you can get it for an economical price.A perfect book for a child or teenager or anyone who is looking for a good introduction to FLW.chrisbct@hotmail.com

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to the life and architecture of FLLW
Mr. Nash's book is full of wonderful color photographs and an in depth chronicle of events in Frank Lloyd Wrights(FLLW) life. The book describes the hardships Wright endured, how he got his start, his turbulent and tragic personal life, his bold architectural philosophy, his defiance of contemorary styles, and much more.Anyone interested in FLLW should take a look at this book.It offers both a great starting point for those interested in learning about the architect and a great reference for those who already know about him. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book, full of brilliant diagrams and visual demonstrations, includes practical applications.
Despite having been released in 1987, this book relays the fundamentals far better than those of any modern "for dummies" or "complete idiot's" series. The book is packed with carefully-done charts and illustrations.Glancing at the back credits will allow one to see that the co-authors must have consulted at least 100 different institutions to gather the illustrations present in this book.

Although it is considered to as an encyclopedia, the topics are actually organized in the form of a physics text so that one may read it cover to cover, and learn a great deal in the process.

This book revealed some amazing information that I had never learned in science classes:

(E.G.'s) Mass and energy are actually interconvertible, police radar guns work by firing microwaves (not radio waves) at moving cars and measuring how long it takes for the waves to return, the equations for force exerted by gravitational field, electrical field and magnetic field are nearly the same, every single object gives off radiation at all times, the "sea of electrons" within metals is responsible not only for their exceptional electrical conductivity but also for their great heat conductivity, Ultra wave sounds may be used to weld metal without melting it, etc.!!!!

plus at the price, you can't go wrong even if you find you disagree with my excellent review.I am going to get the chemistry volume from this series as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A 'magnificent and timely' work....
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R3F44N116ZBOKP CONCERNING PLACES OF REFUGE FOR SHIPS IN DISTRESS

An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers

If you're professionally involved in the world of shipping, transport and maritime law, whether practitioner, student or academic, you need this invaluable work of reference from Lloyd's List.It addresses one of the thorniest and most topical issues pertaining to worldwide shipping:the problem of what to do about - and where to put - a vessel foundering in distress off a coastline.Certainly this is a matter that has confounded national and city states since the early days of sail.

Significantly in the opening pages, the author quotes Pliny the Younger (who [we believe] chronicled the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 71!) who applauds the construction of a port on the Italian coast (now Citta Vechia) as a safe haven that would save countless lives. Just goes to show how long -- and longer -- the problem has been with us and which, almost two millennia later has acquired new and often horrifying dimensions, due to security issues and the risk of environmental pollution.

It is the reluctance of many coastal states to agree to -- and adhere to -- specific legal arrangements for governing ships in distress which persists as a vexed issue worldwide and which the CMI (Comite Maritime International) has sought to address in the form of the CMI draft Instrument.

It's the author, Professor Eric Van Hooydonk, who presented a paper at the 2004 Vancouver Conference entitled `The obligation to offer a place of refuge to a ship in distress. A plea for granting a salvage reward to ports and an international convention on ports of refuge.'This paper has provided the legal underpinning for the work which the CMI continued to do.

So, in just under 500 pages, the book presents a detailed analysis of the CMI draft Instrument in all its aspects. At the same time it examines developments within the IMO and European States, together with a review of current international law and a summary of leading papers and commentaries on this topic written over the last twenty years.

The scholarship involved is precise and formidable and in this copiously footnoted work, you'll find the expected and useful research tools, including extensive tables of international instruments, EU legislation and general legislation, as well as Tables of Cases and an extensive bibliography. As is pointed out in the Foreword, this is an invaluable source of information and knowledge, not only about the CMI draft Instrument, but about the `enormous international legal source material that exists, but which so far has been very difficult to access' -as compelling a reason as any to rush out and purchase this book.

Kapuan also served as auxiliary chaplain at Herrington Army Air Base nearby Pilsen. In December 1943, Fr. Kapaun was appointed pastor to replace Fr. Sklenar who had retired. After serving in the Pilsen area under the Roman Catholic Diocese of Wichita, Kapaun joined the army in July 1944. The Vatican is now examining whether a medical healing that took place in Sedgwick County, Kansas, can be considered a miracle by the Roman Catholic Church. He may be on the road to sainthood and could be considered only the third American-born saint. On June 9, 1940, Kapaun was ordained a priest at what is now Newman University in Wichita, Kansas. He celebrated his first Mass at St. John Nepomucene in Pilsen, Kansas. In 1943, Kapaun is appointed auxiliary chaplain at the Army Air Base in Herington. Fr.
