Product Description
In the fall of 1997, in a palazzo in the Tuscan hills north of Florence, a small booklet sewn into paper covers turned up in a long-unopened crate of old letters and other documents. It bore the title "Maurice" and an inscription: "For Laurette from her friend
Mrs Shelley." Investigation proved it to be a story written by Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein, a story presumed by scholars to have been irretrievably lost soon after its composition in 1820. It is here published for the
first time.
Written two years after her great gothic novel, Maurice dates from a period when Mary Shelley, still only twenty-two, was deeply sunk in depression. She had eloped with the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley at sixteen, borne him four children and seen three of them die. Thus, though Maurice is basically a charming moral tale written for a child--the daughter of a close friend--it betrays a vein of melancholy, beginning with a funeral and concerning a boy who has lost his parents. Even the happy ending has a sad twist.
Claire Tomalin--the distinguished biographer of, among others, Jane Austen and Mary Shelley's mother, Mary Wollstonecraft--was personally involved in the authentication
of the rediscovered manuscript. She here contributes a comprehensive and fascinating
introduction that explores the literary and
psychological importance of the story and investigates the hitherto obscure histories of the two extraordinary families whose lives it touched.Amazon.com Review
Mary Shelley's short children's tale, Maurice, or theFisher's Cot, remained undiscovered for 200 years. It's a charmingenough story about a stolen child who is eventually reunited with hisparents, but taken on its own merits, Maurice is far morelikely to appeal to Shelley scholars than to modern-daychildren. Fortunately, its publishers recognize this and have sensiblyincluded a fascinating introduction by ClaireTomalin--indeed, the introduction is longer than the storyitself. In it, Tomalin describes the circumstances under which themanuscript was rediscovered (in a trunk, in a palazzo, in Tuscany) andits authenticity verified:

We were greeted by Andrea and Cristina Dazzi, and offered coffee. Then themanuscript of Maurice was brought out and laid in front of me on thetable: an alarming moment because coffee and manuscripts must not occupythe same space. Once we had separated them, I found Maurice exactlyas Cristina Dazzi had described it.
Tomalin then goes on to relate the unhappy life of its author from herimpulsive elopement to the continent with the then-married Percy Shelley through the early deaths of three of her children andthe unorthodox relationship between herself, her husband, and hersister--who may also have been Percy Shelley's lover. So riveting is thepreface to Shelley's short story, in fact, that a more accurate title mighthave been An Introduction by Claire Tomalin with a Long-Lost Tale byMary Shelley.

Included in this slim volume are two versions of Maurice; one is"corrected and slightly modernized for ease of reading." The other is afacsimile of the original with Shelley's lineation, pagination, spelling, corrections. Read in the context of the author's own unhappyexperience of losing children, her fable of a child regained resonatespoignantly. This is one lost tale we're glad was found. --AlixWilber ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Biography and a Story
Mary Shelley was such an interesting person, as indeed many around her were. And yet, for all that, she has been totally dwarfed by her one famous novel - 'Frankenstein' - but even here it is not really Mary Shelley. The novel firstly became famous - not as Mary Shelley's story but as a theatrical adaptation. And since then films have built on and obscured the original genius of 'Frankenstein'.

Surprise, surprise - Mary was a lot better than that. She was a very talented and perceptive writer. There are some recommendations below. 'Maurice' is a beautiful story full of pathos and the regrets of life where it seems impossible to award benefit where it is due without splashing it to where it doesn't belong, or to deliver punishment where it's due without - in the same way - delivering negatives to others who do not deserve it.

The biographical information about Mary Shelley and about 'Maurice' itself is a fascinating story and certainly adds to what is really a very short story - justifying publishing it in a single volume.

Other recommendations:
Mary Shelley - Transformation
Mary Shelley - Matilda
Mary Shelley - Frankenstein (if you haven't read it you may be surprised)
William Godwin - Caleb Williams (Godwin was Mary's father)

4-0 out of 5 stars New and exciting
My friend offered me this book to read. It's an amazing work.I read the acutal story and then went back and read the introduction and all the accompanying material. The story itself is cute and definately for children. Then you read the intro and all of a sudden you realize that there was so much more that went into the story than you imagined.I highly reccommend it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Mary Shelley for kids
This tale is a far cry from Mary's most acclaimed work, Frankenstein.Andwhy not?It was, after all, written for a little girl, and therefore notintended to house any complexities. It is a simple story, broken intothree small parts in the fashion of popular adult stories of Shelley'stime, and is a tad on the predictable side. It reads almost like afairytale, with the stolen child reunited with his parents (who happen tobe well-off) by pure chance.Despite the story's lack of surprises, Istill found it wonderful to settle back into the familiarity of Shelley'swriting style with a new text (as will most who have researched her). "The Fisher's Cot" will also appeal to Mary Shelley fans becauseof the introduction by Claire Tomalin at the very beginning. Tomalin doesa good job of setting the scene that the story was written in so that thecasual reader will be able to enjoy not only the actual story, but thestory behind it as well.Overall, if you're a Shelley fan you definitelyshould get this book.If you're not, I politely suggest that you reviewall your options first. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing really new here
It's a very nicely produced cookbook, but it seems a bit bloodless or lifeless compared to the lusty, enthusiastic tone of How to Grill: The Complete Illustrated Book of Barbecue Techniques. This is a pretty coffee table type of book, but I honestly can't see anyone's copy of it getting notes written in the margin or suffering much in the way of staining via barbecue sauce.

This is a mild-mannered, well-behaved cookbook, kind of a neutered grilling cookbook. It's thorough but oddly joyless. To each their own, I guess.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Two Ingredient Cookbook Offering
My wife and myself have become passionate fans of tomato and mozzarella salad, with basil chiffonade and slight dousing of a good Olive Oil.This of course caused great excitement to see this cookbook vectoring off with these two ingredients which are such a gorgeous culinary marriage.

It begins with help in obtaining the best of each ingredients, including growing one's own tomatoes and making one's own mozzarella from the curd stage.

The 100 T&M recipes are organized into various categoires such as breakfast/brunch, finger foods, salads, soups, etc. They are wide ranging and creative. The few that I've tried successfully are: Baked Ricotta and Mozzarella with Olives and Grape Tomato Clusters; Neopalitan Stuffed Chicken, and Potato Tart with Green Beans, Tomato and Mozzarella.Looking forward to many of the remaining 97, such as: Creamy Tomato and Mozzarella Risotto; Tomato, Swiss Chard and Mozzarella Frittata; and Layered Polenta Lasagna with Tomatoes and Mozzarrella.

There are many excellent color photos and the layout is nicely done. Many would enjoy this and put it to good use in their menu planning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Use this cookbook!
This is an excellent cookbook. I have tried several recipes - with outstanding results. The authors do a great job of blending flavors together to produce visually and vicerally tasty dishes. The variety of dishes is also terrific. One thing I wish they had included was the amount of preparation time for a dish as some of them are quite time consuming.

5-0 out of 5 stars No Night is too Long
This movie was filled with romance and suspense. It keeps you guessing until the end. Did he love him or did he not?
It is a movie you can never get tired of watching, because it leaves you wanting answers.

5-0 out of 5 stars I can't belive it!!!
I almost can't believe that this story is so great. It's an amazing story, with incredible characters. You enjoy every aspect of this journey. I live in Mexico and my profession is literature related, and this completely blows my mind. I completely recommended. Besides, the service is very fast. Amazon never disappoints me.

3-0 out of 5 stars atmospheric twists
I was really intrigued by this book, the use of voice and mood are superb! and the plot twists and turns that keep you reading and anticipating. I also LOVED that it was and authentic main character an that sexuality is explored so intelligently AND described in such a way that makes you feel it with them! Vine/Rendall is a great writer!

5-0 out of 5 stars Clever and Compelling
This dense elaborately plotted book is perhaps the best I've read by Rendell/Vine, and that's saying a lot.A bit deus ex machina in places, but the characters are so finely and richly portrayed, and I became so emotionally involved in the plot, I didn't care. The settings, particularly that of Alaska, are also wonderfully drawn. Highest recommendation to anyone who loves a good mystery novel that also holds its own as quality mainstream fiction.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Real Twist on a Love Story
I have read most of Ruth Rendell's books written as Ruth Rendell, but this is my first one written as Barbara Vine.I don't really know why I waited this long.Perhaps I didn't want to be disappointed because I love Ms. Rendell's writing so much (especially the Inspector Wexford series).Well, I wasn't disappointed with this book, and intend to read all the others.Although this book is darker than the Ruth Rendell books, it is possible to tell that they are written by Ms. Rendell. She is a wonderful author, and her plotting and characterizations are really good. This book is also a little different because it is a love story when all is said and done, but there is the characteristic Rendell twist at the end of the book. The book is also different because everything in it is narrated, so we read about everything "second-hand" so to speak. But that doesn't kill the tension.I find it strangely kept the tension going tighter and tighter as we read through Tim's narrative. We are front and centre for love, death, fear, superstition and hate.Powerful emotions! ...
