5-0 out of 5 stars Love, Love, and Love some more!
This is a Book, that all you fans of "Are You Being Served?"should own.I had read the review here, and it is true to it's word, the book is great! For those who want to know about the beloved cast, this is for you! Although it is sad to see our Mr. Humphries again, I now can see him any time I want with a smile!!A must have!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The 'best of' book version of AYBS.
I rate this book just a slight notch above the KQED AYBS book, simply because the creators of AYBS had input in this project. It also highlights the bit players who appeared on AYBS, otherwise the two books do a fine of episode, character, and actor bio's. But the before mentioned book does a slightly better job at reviewing 'Grace and Favour' and the Australian AYBS version..., so you have to buy both :-)

4-0 out of 5 stars Are you still free after 25 years?
For those of you who have the Are You Being Served? book by Adrian Rigelsford--are you free? For those of you who don't, are you also free?Well, gather around everybody, and that also includes special Grace Brothers board members.

This 25th anniversary book by Richard Webber with the two co-creators of the show, Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft, is basically an update of the previous book, but in a slightly different format. The story-by-story synopses are there, but instead of the * to **** ratings, there are memorable dialogue bits, that are always good for a laugh or two.

New material:familiar BBC performers who made guest appearances (mostly as hapless customers) on the show, with a short bio on each one. However, why was Gorden Kaye, who later starred in Lloyd and Croft's French Resistance comedy, 'Allo 'Allo, excluded from this section? Also, an episode-by-episode list of guest appearances.

What really perks me are younger photographs of the stars. They are recognizable but it's interesting to see how they looked before they joined Grace Brothers. And Lloyd and Croft's personal observations on the stars are filled with the fondest and highest respect.

There are bios on some of the minor but regular performers, such as Vivienne Johnson (Mr. Grace's nurse), Milo Sperber (Mr. Grossman) and Benny Lee (Mr. Klein), as well as those in Grace And Favour.

There are some updates.Inbetween books, Arthur English, who played Mr. Harman the packing department head, died in 1995, as did Billy Burden (Mr. Moulterd), in 1994.
However, the icing on the cake is the list of hot dolly bird secretaries who appeared throughout the season. My favorites:Penny Irving, the luscious redhead who appeared during the show's peak era, Louise Burton, and the Barbie Doll Candy Davis, who now got a Master's degree and is teaching.Wow, brain and beauty! How rare!Another hottie, Debbie Linden, sadly died in 1997.

My recommendation:get this AFTER the Adrian Rigelsford book to get the optimal enjoying effect. You'll be right as rain then.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Tribute!
This lovely and indeed comprehensive tribute book commences with an introduction by Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft (co-writers of the series) and a foreword by Lloyd's ex-wife (and two-time guest), Joanna Lumley, and it is sure to be treasured by fans of this entertaining British comedy.

What makes this book so enjoyable is the amount of participation author Richard Webber has received from everyone involved in the production (from writers, directors, costume designers, etc., to the actors themselves), and the book is filled with their many anecdotes. In the case of deceased actors Harold Bennett (Young Mr. Grace) and Arthur Brough (Mr. Grainger), assistance has been provided by their son and daughter, respectively.

The book includes a detailed history of the series--how it came about, how the actors were chosen, why certain actors left the show, how certain effects were achieved, and so on.Also included are chapters on the stage show, the movie, the 90's sequel (Grace and Favour also known as Are You Being Served? Again!) and a look at the success of the show (and its US and Aussie spinoffs) abroad.

My favourite parts are the four-page bios of the original cast, which includes b/w and sepia photos of the actors at various ages and stages in their careers.(A priceless inclusion are the childhood photos of most of these actors). This is followed by one-half- to one-page bios of "other memorable characters"--the maintenance men, the replacements for Mr. Grainger and Mr. Lucas, Old Mr. Grace, the nurse, and the canteen manageress. There are separate chapters for the secretaries and the lift girls with brief quarter-page bios and tiny b/w photos of each. Finally, there is a chapter devoted to "familiar faces" which contains brief quarter-page bios & tiny b/w photos of every actor to have appeared as a guest on the show.

The book also includes a complete episode guide, often with a particularly memorable snippet of dialogue from the episode being summarized or a "memory" from one of the cast of crew.An episode guide and brief quarter-page bios are also provided for Grace and Favour. Finally, there is a detailed index.

The book is a 10" x 7 3/4" 176-page hardcover printed on thick, good-quality paper with a matte finish, and it contains many b/w and colour photos throughout.

In conclusion, this is an attractive, well-researched, well-written, comprehensive and thoroughly enjoyable look back at one of Britain's most popular comedies and at the cast and crew who made it so memorable.Very highly recommended! ... Read more

Product Description
Celebrated actress Christabel Cartwright trades her country house, its staff of servants, and her husband for a reckless affair.

She also thought she could resume her career--her director was delighted, and so was Megalith Television. But one person in Christabel's circle had doubts.

What happens next is murder, and it brings Jemima Shore, the author's elegant alter ego, into the fray. She trails her man (or is it woman?) through the thickets of human emotion.

"Glorious fun...the ending is genuinely surprising." (The Spectator) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable book, if not Fraser's best.
Jemima Shore Investigator goes to Larminster to cover the small local theater festival held in that town by the sea. What seems like it will be a boring and standard assignment, turns into a free-for-all as the return of an infamous local actress to the stage sets tempers flaring. Murder follows murder as Jemima begins to have her own ideas about who is to blame.

It is really a mark of how good Fraser is as a detective writer that I really enjoyed this book despite the unbelievable ending. While not as good as some of the other Fraser novels, the characters still have depth and the writing has a fine and subtle quality well above that of most detective fiction novels. If you have not read Fraser before, I would begin with Quiet as a Nun, not Cool Repentance. If already a Fraser fan,it is still enjoyable, even when it does not deserve to be. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ FOR ALL HORSE OWNERS
Julie Dicker has passed on and what a loss for the horses as she helped so many but she gave at least some of them a voice through her book. What Horses Say should be required reading for anyone considering buying a horse and those who own horses. We all talk to our horses, but most of us don't listen to them. Most of us probably don't have the psychic ability of Julie but please buy this book, read it and use it to at least try to understand what your horse is trying to tell you.I guarantee you will come away from reading this book with ways you can make your horse happier and healthier.

5-0 out of 5 stars What Horses Say: How to Hear, help and Heal them
This is a great book.I have been skeptic in regards to this topic. However it is so well written. It has helped me to understand my horse to a new level.Several horse friends have also enjoyed this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
Interesting book, easy to read with sometimes amazing stories. Good book for anyone who thinks a deeper communication with animals is possible, and who wants to know what horses think about the way we're dealing with them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent fodder for those wishing to hear more
This is not a step-by-step guide as to how to hear and convey information with horses - rather it is more a compendium of wonderful successes of having done so. It will help fill out the scope of your appreciation of what's possible in animal communication; especially with horses. There are interesting statistics associated with each major subject tackled (saddles. freedoms, companionship and more) based on the experiences of one talented and highly regarded equine specialist. She has kept track of the information she has received from all of her clients and compiles a lot of that information here. Her methods reiterate those expounded on in other books on this same subject, but again, this is not deeply explored in this little volume. I may not advise you to start with this book in your search for how-tos, but I would recommend it as a collection of successes that will add depth to your overall knowledge on the subject of animal communication.

3-0 out of 5 stars common person
While the book was a great read it was not a how to book.I wanted more help with animal communication. This book really just gave extraordinary examples of a fabulous animal communicator so as to convince nonbelievers, but there wasn't a how to part. ... Read more

Product Description

At the heart of this book is a cry for change in attitude - to respect nature and all that it provides. Virginia McKenna has pushed aside the glamour of movie stardom, the West End and Broadway where she starred in major shows like The King and I and A Little Night Music. Instead she focuses relentlessly on her personal mission with the Born Free Foundation or the plight of orphaned children across the world.

Through the prism of memory a lifetime of experiences, ecstatic, amusing or tragic have flooded back in the form of anecdotes, meditations and poems to form this book.

This book will inspire anyone who cares about the future of the planet and all the creatures dependent on it, including human beings.

Part of the proceeds from each book sold will go to support Born Free Foundation campaigns.

In 1860, as a young girl of 17, Lady Slane nurtures a secret, burning ambition—to become an artist. She becomes, instead, the wife of a great statesman and the mother of 6 children. Seventy years later, released by widowhood, and to the dismay of her pompous children, she abandons the family home for a tiny house in Hampstead. Here she recollects the dreams of youth, and revels in her newfound freedom with her odd assortment of companions: Genoux, her French maid; Mr. Bucktrout, her house agent; and a coffin maker who pictures people dead in order to reveal their true characters. And then there's Mr. FitzGeorge, an eccentric millionaire who met and loved her in India when she was young and very lovely. It is here in this world of her own that she finds a passion that comes only with the freedom to choose, and it is this, her greatest gift, that she passes on to the only one who can understand its value. First published in 1931, Vita Sackville-West's masterpiece is the fictional companion to her great friend Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sackville-West, Woolf, and early 20th century feminism

Virginia Woolf is probably the most significant woman writer among the British modernists.Certainly, her novels, essays, and letters are currently canonical.Sackwille-West, a friend and contemporary writer,
has produced in ALL PASSION SPENT a book that pairs beautifully with Woolf's work, giving us a sense of the range and variety of work being done by British women writers in the 1920's and 1930's.In itself, ALL
PASSION SPENT is a great read, something well written and memorable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Age and Gender Defied
Lady Slane spent her entire life as a politician's wife, raising six children. In the wake of her husband's death she finally has time and space to attend to her own desires. At age eighty-eight Lady Slane chooses to move to her own home, and surround herself with persons of her own choosing. And what Lady Slane chooses to do is to reminisce about her life, from her marriage in 1860 to the present day. Lady Slane's children presume that their mother has descended into madness, but she holds her ground, refusing to become the doddering widow her children expect. In this novel we learn Lady Slane's history: her thwarted dreams of becoming an artist, her love for her husband, and the restrictions incumbent on Victorian political wives. The book culminates as Lady Slane faces an awakening of unexpected passion. This is a dark and contemplative novel, though there are elements of comedy as well. The Slane children all fit into comic stereotypes, and perform their allotted roles to the point of ridiculousness. These comic elements are necessary, they allow Lady Slane to be sensible, rather than cruel, in cutting herself off from her children at the end of her life. Lady Slane's long life spans the Victorian and Edwardian periods, and if the hallmark of the Victorian era was change, than Lady Slane is certainly a good model thereof. She lived through modernization, the growth of empire, and in her reflections we see the long span of her life.

5-0 out of 5 stars A magnificent book
This is a truly beautiful and wise book, about what it means for
a woman to give up her own dreams and her deepest
self and "sin against the light". Mrs. Slane has had what
appears to be a perfect and gilded life, but having reached the
end of it, wants to reclaim the true inner life, and the art,
which she has lost. There is a moment of redemption, even as
Mrs. Slane's own story ends. The writing is precise, profound, knowing and
poetic . Anyone who has struggled with self-abdication: the sacrifices of love: the struggles demanded by art should read this--as well as anyone who loves good writing and fine novels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply beautiful
This gorgeous novel reflects many of the ideas found in "A Room Of One's Own" by Virginia Woolf, with whom Vita had a famous affair. After the death of her husband, the Earl of Slane, Lady Slane shocks her staid family by asserting her own will, leaving the house she kept with her husband, and settling into a small house in the countryside. Finally after seventy years, Lady Slane is determined to live as she chooses, with a life full of contemplation, dreams, and memories. She reflects on her lost ambition to be a painter, but knows that the life she lived was not without merit or value. She finds passion in the freedom to choose, and this gift she bequeaths to the one member of her family who understands its importance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unforgettable classic for women (of any age) who "Get It!"
I meandered my way to this book through Sarah Ban Breathnach's treasure of self-excavation, Simple Abundance.I had read Anne Morrow Lindbergh because of her recommendation too.AML & Charles Lindbergh were good friends with Vita Sackville-West & her husband, Nigel Nicholson. So I finally got around to Vita Sackville-West & this book.It was so moving, wonderful, unforgettable, that I will reread it.I laughed & cried.I will try to find older copies of this to give away to dear friends, old & new. It's one of those books.I'm 41 & have sacrificed much for the men & children in my life that I nonetheless love so dearly. This book helped me bring those feelings of ambivalence into focus. It also helped me realize I'm relatively young & still have time to live the life I've dreamed of since I was a little girl.Maybe this "child-bearing years" thing was just a detour. ... Product Description
"Pride and Prejudice" is a masterpiece of wit and perception, perfectly exposing the mannered social scene of Jane Austen's England. This was an era when young ladies were carefully groomed for matrimony and little else ...so Mrs Bennet is eager to see at least some of her five daughters married off. But the varying temperaments and spirits of our heroine Elizabeth and her sisters, not to mention their precarious social standing, means the quest for love and happiness is not without setback. Meeting snobbery, prejudice and the likes of Mr Collins, Mr Wickham and a certain Mr Darcy along the way, the listener too will be swept up in a joyous tide of romance, desire and satire as relevant and entertaining today as when first published. Joanna Lumley's career has ranged from her early days as her model to her award-winning status as a fine comedy actress in "Absolutely Fabulous". The ever-glamorous favourite narrates with much measure, style and humour. ... Read more
