5-0 out of 5 stars Great Depth
This is my first of his series to do.I find this to be an easy read with great impact in his explaination without being lost in theological clouds.John MacArthur is a great commentary to read and even better to learn from.He makes it very practical.Great depth without beig over my head or referencing anchient theologeons.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended Bible Study Series
I have now led and or participated in three Bible studies using John MacArthur's study guides. They are tremendous. Each guide gives a comprehensive introduction of the Book to be studied including the history and dating of the period, the background and setting, the people to whom the book is written and a bio on the author of the book being studied. In each chapter, MacArthur gives a brief but highly detailed introduction to the context and theme(s) of the passage to be studied. Each chapter focuses thematically on a segment of verses not necessarily on a whole chapter.Key words are explained for greater understanding and clarification. The questions that follow are substantive and make the reader look inward to their heart as well as into the Biblical passage for answers. He provides an opportunity to "go deeper" at the end of each chapter. This section takes the reader to a different Bible passage that either contrasts or shines a brighter light on the passage of study.I would highly recommend all of John MacArthur's Bible studies for personal study, men's or woman's studies or home group studies. They are an excellent way to dig deeper into Gods word.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
MacArthur study guides are great for our Bible Study.Unlike many others, his questions are thought provoking. We use MacArthur material a lot in our group.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Kindle Formatting
I picked this up on the Kindle for a small-group study, but had to buy a hard copy, as the formatting made reading difficult and ruined my ability to converse with my small group. I'm not entirely certain that I'm not reading a drastically revamped text, since I'm often unable to find passages my group is talking about.

An example: The text will have a few verses of James, accompanied by explanations of key terms, often with reference to nuances in the meaning of the original Greek. That's fabulous. The Kindle version, however, gives the reader a couple verses, a page or two of blank space (but for a vertical line down the screen) and then some of the definitions, effectively removing the definitions from their context and making comprehension prohibitively difficult.

I have no qualms with the hard-copy version. It's just the Kindle adaptation that frustrates me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A tremendous help
I use this book to help me prepare for a weekly bible study. The insights are helpful. The book helps me to understand deeper meanings, and then to pass them on.I am very thankful for this resource. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Study Bible
Over the years, I've used many Study Bibles but this one is in a league of its own. I'd highly recommend it to any serious student of God's Word.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I purchased the MacArthur Study Bible Kindle Edition several days ago.I was very disappointed to see that the notes of the authur re: the verses explanations, etc. were not included. His commentaries before each Book were but not his notes.I have this Bible in hard copy so I was excited to learn that it was available for my Kindle but disappointed when it downloaded.I look forward to taking my Kindle out of town.I think the Bible should not be listed as a Study Bible but just a Bible.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rating for use on Kindle 3
I purchased this Kindle edition because I wanted a NKJV to go with my new K3.

I downloaded sample versions of both the MacArthur version and Thomas Nielson's "The NKJV Study Bible" version. The thing I didn't like about the Nielson Kindle edition is it included word studies and articles in the middle of the Biblical text (e.g, in between verses 2 and 3 of Genesis 1, the passage broke and you had to read the article or page forward through it).

In the MacArthur version, it appears all the commentary and cross-references are handled via clicks where it opens a different location.Unfortunately, the sample versions of both Bibles don't support this feature, but the full-version does.

The missing thing for the Kindle edition is a way to jump directly to a book, chapter, verse. You can get their by going to the Table of Contents each time, but it is a bit laborious to click through all that.

If I counted correctly, it takes nine buttons/clicks to get to the Old Testament using the ToC approach. If you use the Location approach and just remember the OT Index is at location 85, you can get there in six clicks.Either way it is a little slow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly What Mom Wanted !
Mom was looking for a study bible, and we found this one. Excellent condition, very fast shipping from the vendor.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good content, poor quality book
Good content, as always. However the quality of the paper in the book is poor.So thin the print on the reverse side is visible, making it hard to read, and the corners and edges of the pages dog-ear and curl very quickly.Too bad. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Best Study Bible on the market
Outside of the fact that it was thumb index (I must have missed that is the description) I am very pleased with the Bible.I believe The MacArthur Study Bible is the best study Bible sold today, and any version is a good one as long as you have one in your Christian library.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book and a wonderful resource
I hardly know where to begin! This excellent resource is based on the New King James Version of the Bible. Each book of the Bible, Old Testament and New, begins with a fascinating introduction, and a very useful outline. There are copious notes on the verses, it being quite common that there are more notes that verses on any given page! Also, there are many notes on such topics as systematic theology and archaeology and the Bible, plus many tables and timelines.

I must admit that while I am a fan of Doctor MacArthur, I am not sufficiently knowledgeable to give the reader a true understanding of his beliefs and dispositions.

That said, though, this is a great book and a wonderful resource. Reading through it, I have found the notes to be easily understandable, and quite informative. I highly recommend this book to everyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars MacArther Study Bible
This is a great study bible. I was told that this bible has a lot of information, and it does. I recommend this bible to everyone. I like all the references that it has.

5-0 out of 5 stars Happy with MacArthur
This was a great choice.Print is easy enough to read if I can't find my glasses.Lots of cross references.Very glas I purchased it.I do miss the "red letters", but I have another source for that.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice product if you like the author and Edition
Quality product if you like MacArthur's notes, mentality and theology. You also need to like the NKJV translation, which falls short in translation at points due to the diverse source of manuscripts and resources used in translation.MacArthur is anti-Pentecostal-charismatic, which is his right, but he is tough on charismatic interpretative approach to Scripture, while claiming literalist interpretative position. The notes are factual [some are personal interpretations] but for me not earthshaking or as informative as some other study Bibles.NKJV translation leaves a lot to be desired, despite it's promotion as a successor to the KJV.Bottom line is for fans of MacArthur this edition will be easy to read from the top of the page to the bottom as well as Introductory notes and concordance, but I would not base my theology exclusively on this Study Bible. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Topical Bible
I found this topical Bible to be very helpful.Great for studying or Bible study class when you cant think of the scripture you want.
I did look for disciple though and it was not there so I went to apostle and found the correct scripture.
If you cant find what you want, think of a related word and it should be there.
Very useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the Bible I use in Seminary studies
There are a lot of Bibles out there for folks to buy right now, almost as many Bibles as stars in the sky, to use a coined phrase.I have used several different Bibles in the past, but this one is a favorite of mine and one that I recommend to those I know who are looking for Bibles for themselves or others. The reason for that is simple, I like John MacArthur and his style of Bible exploration. He has some very good books out there, not just on Bible prophecy, but on examining and exploring the Christian life. The Bible fits perfectly in a bookbag or a shoulder bag (I use a shoulder bag, which usually has several other books I am studying at that moment). It is not cumbersome or heavy. The translation itself is NKJV which I myself like out of all the translations out there (I'm a bit of a Bible snob, I must admit, due to some errors found in Bibles like the NIV translation or due to dumbed down grammar as found in Bibles like the Message). And while this isn't a Study Bible with deep notes at the bottom half of the page, instead he has sprinkled notes throughout the pages, you still gain a pretty good idea as to the messages found in the particular portion of the Bible you may be reading. All in all, this is an awesome Bible that I highly suggest to anyone who wishes to learn about God's truth and love and grace and holiness.I also highly recommend you check out other books by MacArthur!

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic study Bible
My daughter is eleven-years-old, and learning more and more about God. We are reading Little Pilgrim's Progress by Helen Taylor together, and I realized that it is now time for her to have her own Bible. A beloved aunt of mine gave me my first Bible, a bare bones KJV, and I treasure it to this day. But, over the years I was sometimes envious of others' wonderful study Bibles. So, I decided that the Bible I give my daughter would be the best study Bible I can find, one that she can use for her entire life. Well, this is it!

This Bible is the New King James Version, plus a whole lot more. It begins with an introduction to the Bible, chapters on how we got the Bible, how to study the Bible, and a preface to the NKJV. The Old and New Testaments each have a highly informative introduction, and each book of the Bible begins with an introduction that covers Author and Date, Background and Setting, Historical and Theological Themes, and an outline of the book. As if that weren't enough, the book is crammed full of notes, sidebars and references. Plus, the finale of this Bible is a topical index (even better than a concordance in my opinion), and eight color maps!

Whoo! As I hope the above description tells you, this is a fantastic study Bible. It has everything a studious Christian of any age could want. As I hope that my daughter will use this book for many years to come, I went with the hardbound edition. The binding appears good to me, and I think that it is well worth the extra few dollars.

I am very happy with this purchase, and I highly recommend this Bible to everyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for All Ages
The word "Student" in the title may lead people to think this is a study Bible for youngsters. Not so!A young person of college age or even high-school age would love it, but so will people in their sixties (cest moi)!It is the one study Bible that is not loaded with 85 percent commentary and 15 percent Bible. It tells you just what you want to know and lets you get on with your reading. The informative longer notes appear only occasionally, and they are complete on one page. The short notes appear in shaded areas and are very valuable. For example, the short note with Luke 22:44 explains Christ's sweating great drops of blood with an excellent explanation of the medical phenomenon known as "hematidrosis."The absence of red-letter type is a relief--too many Bibles now are printed with the red-letter feature. One no longer has a choice, and the red ink is often badly applied or more pink than red and hard to read.MacArthur's Student Bible is easy to live with--very legible large type, but not overlarge, and plenty of white space. The introductions to each book of the Bible are very well done too. This is a gem! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A judicious and comprehensive study of MacArthur's pre-WWII years
There are few figures in American history who generated as much controversy as Douglas MacArthur. From the first, he was a man about whom few were neutral, with a military career that brought him great acclaim and a personality that led many to despise him. This polarization is what makes D. Clayton James's achievement all the more remarkable. In this book, the first volume of a three-volume biography about the man, James succeeds in avoiding the extremes of hagiography or demonization, instead presenting a balanced assessment of the first six decades of MacArthur's long and historic life.

James begins by examining Douglas MacArthur's considerable military heritage. The son of Arthur MacArthur, a Civil War hero who went on to become military governor of the Philippines, Douglas grew up an "Army brat", accompanying his father as he moved from posting to posting.Excelling at West Point, where he graduated at the top of his class, he served a few years as an engineer before transferring to the infantry.MacArthur rose quickly through a combination of his own abilities and well-positioned friends, reaching the rank of brigadier general by the end of the First World War.After the war, he served in a number of prominent commands, including a period as superintendent of West Point (where he modernized much of the curriculum) before becoming the Army Chief of Staff in 1930.Yet for all of his success his career was colored by dramatic self-promotion, an almost paranoid suspicion of perceived rivals, and political controversy, and many were happy to see him leave as Chief of Staff for service abroad as military adviser in the Philippines. There, in spite of tight budgets and other problems, he endeavored to improve the colony's defenses against invasion, one he is on the verge of facing when James ends the book.

Though published forty years ago, James's book remains the starting point for anyone seeking to learn about MacArthur's career before the Second World War.This is due in equal parts to the author's judiciousness, the extensiveness of his research, and the thoroughness with which he examines his subject.James does not hesitate to judge MacArthur, yet his judgments about such controversies as the attack on the Bonus Marchers are fair and well supported by the evidence.Overall, this book is an indispensable study of MacArthur's early years and a good start to the definitive study of a accomplished and divisive figure. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Study Bible
Larger than the average carry Bible, but there are a lot of study notes in there. MacArthur is a great Bible scholar, not perfect but real good. He is able to give a good explanation without being to wordy. When I do a verse by verse study, I like to compare the comments of MacArthur, J. Vernon McGee and Dr.Henry Morris.
I originally ordered the "updated & revised" edition but did not like the thumb indexs. Had to order the earlier edition to get away from the thumb indexs and saved about $25. IHMO no differance except a few extra study aids at the rear of the Bible. The Scripture notes appear the same. I can recommend this one. Go for the large print, so much easier on the eyes.

4-0 out of 5 stars MacArthur Study Bible
This study Bible is an outstanding addition to the library of longstanding or new individuals interested in studying the Word of God.
The footnotes are very informative, complete, but occasionally too academic.Mac Arthur's insight is amazing - he is an incredibly bright teacher! This Bible is a great compliment to a Life Application Bible.

4-0 out of 5 stars MacAuthur Study Bible (Large print)
I purchased the MacAuthur Study Bible for myself about a year ago and I am still thoroughly satisfied with it.I am still studying and comparing it to the KJV in appreciation.I highly recommend the MacAuthur Study Bible to everyone. It gives a clear and accurate account/interpretation of the God's Word (KJV).Also, I recently gifted the large print version to my mother. She absolutely loves it!!!

Be Blessed,
DJ Lowery

3-0 out of 5 stars A study Bible that deserves better printing
I rate the quality of John MacArthur's commentary as a 5, whereas the PHYSICAL quality (printing/paper/binding) of this Bible is a weak 1. So I rate it overall in the mid-point *3*.

John MacArthur is a superb teacher - conservative, evangelical, down-to-earth. If you can deal with the faded print, overly small font, glued binding, and see-through paper, the commentary itself is one of the very best.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost ideal ... but not quite.
The hardcover, larger-print (not really large), NKJV MacArthur study bible is great on content and the type-size easier on the eyes, even if your vision is fine.

Unfortunately, it's printed on thin "see through" tissue-paper. The print on the other side is a distraction that has to be filtered out. For a study bible, thinness needn't be a driving factor compromising legibility.

The format could have been great, but slightly fell short of what the intended usage deserves. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Large Print Delight!
While a positive or glowing review of the MacArthur Study Bible will not be strange...the fact that there is large print version...is a blessing to those who have issues reading the oft small font on many other Bibles...

Highly recommended...and clear like an autumn sky!

5-0 out of 5 stars To spare some confusion: MacArthur has 2 similar Large Print Editions
ISBN-10: 0718020332 is the NKJV Version of the Large Print and ISBN-10: 0718020359 is the NASB 1995 Updated Translation. The NASB is the one I own so will review that one.

Physically the book is large: it has the same height and width of my edition of Young's Analytical Concordance, or about 3" wider than Ryrie's Study Bible, only not as thick. It seems to weigh about the same as Ryrie too. It is indexed which is a plus. It does not appear to be a sewn binding.

The bible font is large (13 point) but not as large as a Lockman Foundation Side Column Reference NASB. The notes are probably about 11 point. It has center column references about 11 point font also. In other words, it's a readable bible but don't expect giant print.

Dr. MacArthur's book introductions and study notes are excellent: he clearly knows and loves the Word. This bible is absolutely jam-packed with information. In fact, sometimes the notes explaining the text tend to fill an entire page by themselves. The notes are comprised of primarily doctrinal and translational content rather than devotional meditations (I personally bought a Charles F. Stanley Life Principles Large Print for devotional reading ISBN-10: 0718014626, sold here at reasonable cost on Amazon.)

When I am seriously immersing myself in study, I like MacArthur along with me - no question about it. Highly Recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Study Bible
This bible was a gift for my husband.Previously we were using a Life Application Study Bible,(which is also a great study bible) but we joined a new church that reads out of the NAS bible. After a lot of comparison I decided on the MacArthur Study Bible, and what a terrific choice. The large print makes for easy reading. The format and notes by John MacArthur give a clear understanding of The Word, how to apply The Word to our daily lives, and how to share The Word with others.
If your church uses the NAS version, I highly recommend the MacArthur NAS study bible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great study Bible
