5-0 out of 5 stars Great "first book" for parents wanting to use a catechism with their kids
For hundreds of years, the training of Christian young people involved the learning of a catechism. A catechism was a set of instructions on Christian doctrine. Essentially, it was a list of questions and answers used to instill the fundamentals of the faith in the hearts of children. Many of the Reformed confessions, such as the Westminster Confession, included catechisms. Martin Luther considered his short catechism to be one of his two most important books. Even the great Baptist preacher, Charles Spurgeon, wrote a catechism for young children.

Being an American and a Baptist, the very notion of a catechism seems incredibly foreign to me. But as I've studied church history and learned of the important role catechisms have played since the Reformation, I've actually been on the lookout for a simple catechism to employ with my own children. Since I've never used a catechism before, I was looking for something easy to use and also quite simple - as my daughters who I'd be teaching, are between the ages of 4 and 7.

Carine MacKenzie's "My First Book of Questions and Answers" is what I found and so far, my children are eating it up. MacKenzie's book is based on the Westminster Shorter Catechism. It consists of 114 questions broken up into 26 topics. The questions are direct and the answers are short and to the point. A Scripture reference is supplied for each answer.

The following topics are covered by the questions and answers. Who God is. Creation and sin. What the consequences of sin is. Salvation. Jesus as Prophet, Priest and King. The Ten Commandments - what they are and what they mean for us. Keeping God's Laws. The Way to be Saved. Baptism and the Lord's Supper. Prayer and Bible Reading. Death, Hell and Heaven.

The book is pocket sized with large font and catchy graphics. It's a bright, cheery book that young readers will like to read. My 7 year old has been reading some of the questions and answers we haven't yet covered.

I've found the catechism format works well as a tool for parents wanting to teach their children. You can easily use the questions to probe how well they understand the answers given in the book. You will be able to have a pulse on what questions your children have when it comes to the gospel. And on another level, my kids think the questions and answers are a lot of fun. It's a game to them, and they are excited about some small incentives my wife and I have planned for them as they learn these questions.

I should add a word about the theology behind this book. The baptism and lord's supper section is generic enough to be accepted by Presbyterians and Baptists alike. There is a Reformed bent to the questions throughout, which I appreciate. However, any of the questions and answers could easily be edited by a conscientious parent.

"My First Book of Questions and Answers" is an ideal "first book" for parents seeking to use a catechism (like myself). You will find it to be a great little tool for instilling biblical teaching into the hearts and minds of your young children. Even though this book is quite small, if used by prayerful parents, it promises to have an eternal impact. May God bless the use of this book in the lives of many Christian parents and their children!

This book is part of a line up that Carine MacKenzie has of 7 "My First" books. The other titles are "My First Book of Bible Prayers", "My First Book of Christian Values", "My First Book of Memory Verses", "My First Book of Bible Promises", "My First Book about Jesus", and "My First Book about the Church". I encourage you to check them all out.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fine Resource for Training Young Christian Minds
My First Book of Questions and Answers is a list of 114 Christian teachings about God, Creation, human sin, and other doctrines.According to the author, it is drawn in part from the Westminster Shorter Catechism and Mother's Catechism by John Willison.

Although many Protestant Christians have moved away from using catechisms for training children in the faith, a catechism is a fine choice for children 3-9, who excel at memorization and often take great pleasure in showing off their ability. This list of short answers to weighty questions will help parents answer their childrens' many questions about the world and their place in it, and the knowledge gained through the exercise of rehearsing doctrinal truth will remain with children for the rest of their lives.

This catechism is very easy to use, with numbered questions that for the most part have short, carefully worded and easy to remember answers. They are supported with scripture references. For example, question #14 reads "Can God do everything?"The answer is, "Yes.He can do everything that pleases him.Isaiah 40:13."Parents and teachers can use this at three levels, then: For daily activity, you can simply have children learn the questions grouped under a given theme, adding one at a time until all are mastered.Or, for less regular engagement you can focus on mastering one question, accompanying it with the provided scripture. There is also a a teacher's guide available (Bible Questions and Answers Teacher's...) to help parents and teachers make the most of this resource.

A catechism cannot stand alone as a family devotional activity -- if you have to choose one thing, choose a good children's Bible. But when you want to incorporate doctrine and/or scripture memorization into your family devotions, this is a fine resource.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mostly Great Catechism for teaching children!
I got this because I realized that there were pieces of the Christian faith that are basic that we didn't go over with our kids.We are using this book where every night at dinner I introduce the next question and answer, and read the bible verse they have with each one. Then I ask the kids all of the questions so far and they say back the answers.

My only complaint is that the Bible verse selected for each question is not always the best choice, and explaining why the verse says that can be challenging.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very dated, and not a hero to fall in love with

This book was originally written in 1990,and boy does it feel dated. You wouldn't think a book set in the old West could date so fast, but the hero feels like the villain in today's book, the guy who made you feel bad about yourself and your body and everything you valued, that diminished you, and that the new hero would have to help you rebuild. He was just so awful to the poor heroine, and his insistence that she was no lady, barely a female, and the put downs he kept giving her,in order to 'protect her from his woman hunger' initially irritated me but them started to make me really sad at the thought that she would going to end up with him for the rest of her life. That he apologizes in the last 5 pages scarcely makes up for it. I liked the 'Only' series, but this book was just awful for me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wreckless love!
What a beautiful, exciting love story... and extraordinarily unique too!

Little Janna has been abandoned near the Black Plateau on the frontier since her father died when she was just fourteen. She learned to fend for herself, dress as a boy, and live successfully, avoiding the deadly renegade Indian tribes (and wild, woman-hungry frontiersmen) that roam the area. She befriends a team of wild horses, led by a beautiful stallion named Lucifer and spends her days like a feral jungle child.

Until she rescues Ty from the bloodthirsty Indians and nurses him back to health. Ty is a good man, a soldier with emotional wounds form the civil war, and is thankful for her rescue. Of course, he thinks she's a boy at first...

This novel circles around the idea that Ty wants Lucifer (the stallion) in order to breed a horse farm in Wyoming- and the wealth that this would bring him in order to afford "a silken lady" and then a family to follow. Ty dreams of delicate women in lace as a vision that will somehow fix the horrors he suffered in the war. He, of course, didn't count on being thrust in the path of a wild, feral, woman-child who dresses in scrubs and tames wild horses. Janna is anything but delicate, but she is fierce and fun and sensual- and Ty finds himself falling for her head over hooves.

Ty needs Janna's help to capture Lucifer... but he doesn't realize that he needs a whole lot more help than that! Janna heals those around her in many ways. I think you'll enjoy this adventurous and sensual romance- and the headstrong Janna as she tames the equally headstrong Ty (who may be more stubborn than the stallion).

If there are any complaints- you WILL roll your eyes the 400th time you read the word "silk".. (silken butterfly, silken ladies, silken skin, silk silk silk silk....) and you might lost track of the details in some long, complex passages about the land and the horses in general. But definitely a well-written and beautiful love story!

2-0 out of 5 stars Skip it......
The Mackenzie/Blackthorn contemporary series is my favorite collection of books in Elizabeth Lowell's backlist.I have reread them all several times, and each of them (Fire and Rain, Outlaw, Granite Man, and Warrior) remain some of my favorite series romances ever.

With that being said, I felt compelled to read Reckless Love as it tells the story of Ty Mackenzie...an earlier generation Mackenzie.

This is just not a great book.Ty thinks that Janna is a boy for the entire first portion of the book.He has all these shallow notions of what beauty is, and I found myself not really liking him at all.Janna was a better character for me, but I was hoping that my interest in her character would be enough to propel me through the long pages describing horses, mustang's, breeding..blah blah blah. For the horse lover...this may be the book for you.For me, I want a love story and this one fell short of that.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bajan Girl
Book one of her series. I had read book 2 and 4 and wanted to read the beginning story. This book is very predictable with graphic love scenes. No deep story line but an easy read for those times that you are so stressed that complicated books are too much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Suspenseful -- Emotional -- Strong, Intelligent, Heroine
Reckless Love
Elizabeth Lowell
five stars

Elizabeth Lowell is an author that I first "met" years ago, but rediscovered recently when I picked up an audio copy of Reckless Love to "read" on a lengthy road trip.

I was not disappointed. I particularly enjoyed Janna Wayland who epitomizes the strong, intelligent heroine. Janna and Ty first meet when Ty is captured by Cascabel and his men while trying to capture Lucifer (a wild mustang.) There was a lot of attention to detail in the portion that dealt with Janna rescuing Ty and covering her tracks as she got him to safety, and I found her cunning and intelligence particularly endearing.

I was not as thrilled with Ty McKenzie, the hero. I found his inability to see beyond his dream to build his life with a "silken lady" a bit frustrating, particularly when he used those words to punish the heroine. I understood his dilemma, the power his dream, his vision of his perfect life had over him. It is perhaps the fact that I understood his motivation that is the saving grace, and the reason that I am giving this book the full five stars. As readers we don't necessarily have to like everything that a hero does...but we do need to understand why he does it, and in this case I did understand the motivation.

I guess in a sense, his desire for a "silken lady" also made me smile, in that his life was certainly not a match for a "silken lady." He was on the run from renegades for most of the book, and a good chunk of the time Janna (his "silken butterfly") was more knowledgeable about the land and escape routes than he was. Had he been out there in the untamed wilderness with the "silken lady" he dreamed about rather than the "satin butterfly" he ended up with he would probably have ended up dead. Janna saved his hide more than once.

All in all this was an entertaining book which I enjoyed a great deal.

When wildlife biologist Eden Summers arrives in the Colorado Rockies, she has only one thing on her mind: to continue her research on the local cougar population. A capable woman, used to living and working alone in the wild, she is self-possessed and confident, able to handle any threat from nature's fiercest predators -- until she gazes into the eyes of Nevada Blackthorn.

She pulled him, injured and bleeding, to safety in the middle of a storm, unleashing a man who would invade her deepest dreams. But Nevada -- a rancher by trade, a warrior by nature -- is a man who has learned that walking away from caring is the only key to survival and that only the strongest survive. Any woman fool enough to try and change him will be hurt -- badly -- for their efforts.

Perhaps Eden is that kind of fool. Or perhaps she has no choice but to follow a calling as fierce, as wild and as natural as the beating of her own heart . . . ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nowhere but Amazon.com
I could not find this book anywhere but through Amazon and its wide network.I've been a long time customer and have NEVER experienced anything unpleasant or even mildly annoying.Best customer relations department I've dealt with in all my adult life -- and I'm 69!

4-0 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars...
Book #5 in this 5 book series.Although I loved the beginning of this book it slacked off about the middle of the book.Once again the nickname that Nevada gave to Eden was driving me crazy.I hated it & it was used way too much. The intimate scenes were way too long & too much & they were almost identical to the other books in this series. This is the 2nd time that the female has been a scientist & it just puts an odd picture in my head.

I'd give this book 3 1/2 stars if I could but since I couldn't I went ahead & gave it the 4 since I enjoyed the beginning so well.

Although I don't recommend book #1 in this series since I didn't like it at all & it doesn't really tie in too much since it's a historical & the rest are contemporary I would say the other 4 are o.k.They're not great but they're o.k. if you have nothing better at the moment.I would not read any of these again though.

5-0 out of 5 stars very good
i liked this book a lot.it was much better than some of the earlier books in this series or group.

the basic story is eden comes to the ranch to see if there is threat to the mountain lions there are in danger.she meets nevada and they of course develop a relationship.

the story is well written, it moves well and i liked it a lot.the characters are 3 dimensional and well written, the story moves quickly but not too fast.i think it is definately worth the read, even though it is very short.i hope you enjoy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not that great and very average
I think the basic premise of this story is solid enough. Where it falls short is in the development of the storyline and its characters. For one thing, I think the main plot would've benefited if the story were a bit longer, allowing time to develop the relationship between Nevada and Eden and also adding more depth to the characters. In its current state, the characters seemed superficial and the story rushed. Most disturbing is Eden's discovery of her feelings for Nevada and after so little foundation on why that occurred. Eden and Nevada spend a lot of time together but the story skips through much of that and focuses on only sex scenes and sexy dialogue. For me, it leaves a lot to be desired.

So, read this only if you can't find anything else better to do with your time.

1-0 out of 5 stars Childish piece of work
I am shocked that this book got so many great reviews. The plot was extremely contrived. There were so many repetitions of dialogues. The sex scenes were so long-winded I found myself skipping paragraphs. This was my first book by this author and I'm not going to pick up another in a hurry. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
The great thing about this book is if you sort of read between the lines it covers the "art" of breeding good, easy keeping goats as much as the science of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Goatkeepers Bible
I've had a copy of this book for at least 25 years and read it over and over. It is by a Brit, but so what? Make the stretch. It covers so many aspects of the subject that transcend goats that it would be informative to anyone interested in land management and animal husbandry in general. He deals with concepts of nutrition ecology and health hardly ever dealt with today, such as alternatives to the use of mainstream comercial feeds, rearing methods and things too numerous to mention, and all from a unique perspective. A true lover of goats. It's THE Bible of goats, written back in 1957 and never equaled to myknowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BIBLE for goatkeepers.
This is a highly technical treatise oriented especially for Brits. Don't let that scare you though - it is a terrific book worthy of shelf space on any serious goatkeeper's library.

I have not found a better source within one book for dairy goat information.

You'll find a lot of useful information if you're wishing to learn about dairy goat farming. If, however, you also want to learn about meat goat production, buy Raising Meat Goats For Profit by Gail Bowman.

4-0 out of 5 stars Highly technical in spots, but with a wealth of info...
This is a reference for a serious goat owner. It is not one I'd recommend for someone just getting into goats. But if you're really serious about your caprines, this book is a must-have.

The topics covered include: Control and Housing of Goats; Principles and Practice of Feeding; Selection of Breeding Stock; Breeding Problems; Disease and Accident; Milking and Dairy Produce; Meat, Leather, and Fleece; Goat Farming Systems; Crops for Goats; Goats for Export; Harness Goats; and more.

There is a thorough index, a bibliography, and several appendixes. The info is presented in a rather dry manner, but is very useful. There are lots of great diagrams, charts, and pictures. It's just a ton of good information. The only major fault I can find is that being published in Great Britain, it does use some terminology unfamiliar to most Americans, and doesn't deal with the US at all. But that's ok, we have enough other books which cover those topics.

Bottom line, if you're looking for a really good, technical reference book on goats of all types, this is an important one to add to your library. ... Read more

* I wasn't a fan of the first book in this series but I have to admit that I enjoyed this book much better.I wasn't big on the hero's reasoning on not wanting to fall in love but I overlooked that & tried to focus on the rest.Looking forward to the next 3 in this series.Although I don't recommend Reckless Love I think I could recommend this book without needing to read the first book.It didn't have hardly anything to do with this book. That being a historical book & the rest of the series being contemporary.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Novel Full of Great Literary Devices
Based on a love story, Fire and Rain is full of history, funny moments, and love conflicts. The story takes place in the "Rocking M:, a ranch out in the Midwest.Luke, a man destined to love and care for his land is the main character of the novel. His history with Carla (his love), is not all that great. On her trip to the Rocking M, Carla is now 21 and reencounters herself with Luke.A few days stay at the ranch results in a whole 2 months stay as the maid and cook around the ranch. It is during this stay, that the reader finds out the history behind the ranch and both Luke and Carla's life. Through Lowell's use of imagery, characterization, and motif, the reader learns of the main character's maturation and love for one another.
Lowell's use of imagery engages the reader in the beauty of the ranch and the characters."Her vibrant blue eyes" and the description of Luke's ruggedness with soft edges helps the reader envision the story.Through this description, the reader learns of qualities of each character, Carla's hard working and perseverance, as well as Luke's focus and self-control.Lowell's use of characterization enhances the characters and evolves with the story to show a mature Carla and a more soft-hearted Luke.Lastly, the motif of the rain and the Rocking M adds to the conflicts they both have because the Rocking M comes to symbolize a prison for Luke and a sentence to unhappiness.Reading about both of their struggles to keep their love alive as well as the ranch was very interesting.I would recommend this book to teenagers who like romance stories as well as those who like to read books for its literary elements.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Great Sucking Sound
This book is totally horrible! The "manly" hero spends most of his times treating the woman he supposedly loves worse than most people treat their worst enemies. The totally gross thing is that she keeps coming back for more--a perfect example of abuse! The guy is unlovable & mean, the girl is pathologically stupid, the whole plot line is the usual stupid Lowell pattern of some cowboy getting the hots for an underage girl, holding off long enough to make sure she's still a virgin, seducing her & getting her pregnant & then the frail flower deciding that her life is complete as long as she gets to stay on the ranch servicing her much older husband (usually at least 10 years older, of course) and being thrilled that she gets to have a baby at an age when most people can't even balance their checkbook. This is the type of novel that a patriarchal Afghanistan warlord would hand out by the dozen to his prospective wives to teach them how real women should act.Eccchhhh!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
This is the first in the series. It is a wonderful book, love those Western Love Stories. It is about a woman named Carla who has been in love with her brother's best Friend Luke since she was a teenager. Now she is all grown up and hasn't seen him since he broke her heart at age 14. She ends up losing a bet and has to work for him on his farm for the whole summer. Trying to resist temptation is not easy and Luke loves her, but keeps trying to push her away by being down right rude. It is interesting to see how much they fight to stay away but seem to not be able to.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not one of my favorites...
I was not too impressed with Fire and Rain.I didn't particularly like Luke's attitude towards Carla...he almost seemed cruel. Not exactly what I look for in a good hero.

Some of the issues seemed like they weren't explored enough as well. And some of the things that happened were a little redundant. He built a cradle for the child he would never have? Some might say that's sweet, but in the context of this story, it seemed very predictable.

The book was good, but I have issues with some things.I think her longer novels were written better, but Fire and Rain was average and would recommend people read it only if you are an Elizabeth Lowell fan. ... Read more

Product Description
An exotic setting and a passionate, forbidden affair make The Clouds Beneath the Sun an irresistible page-turner that is sure to satisfy readers looking for an intelligent blend of history, romance, and intrigue.

Mackenzie Ford (a nom de plume) was introduced to readers in 2009 with the publication of Gifts of War, which was praised in USA Today as “an absorbing, morally complex read.” In a starred review, Library Journal said, “Ford keeps the reader on a knife’s edge as the lies build and the truth is only a word or misstep away. Highly recommended.”

Now Ford takes us to Kenya in 1961. As a small plane carrying Natalie Nelson lands at a remote airstrip in the Serengeti, Natalie knows she’s run just about as far as she can from home. Trained as an archeologist, she accepted an invitation to be included in a famous excavating team, her first opportunity to escape England and the painful memories of her past.

But before she can get her bearings, the dig is surrounded by controversy involving the local Masai people—and murder. Compounding the tension, Eleanor Deacon, friend of the Masai, who is leading the excavating mission, watches a rift grow between her two handsome sons. Natalie’s growing attraction to Jack Deacon soon becomes a passionate affair that turns dangerous when she must give evidence in a trial that could spark even more violence and turmoil.

The startling beauty of the Kenyan setting, the tension of looming social upheaval, and the dizzying highs and crushing lows of a doomed love affair are all captured brilliantly on every page of this extraordinary and utterly unforgettable novel. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Bland and tedious
The characters in this book are one dimensional and the story repetitive. I found this book to be boring and tedious.

2-0 out of 5 stars Murder and the Maasai of the Serengeti
Running from a broken relationship, young Dr. Natalie Nelson, an archaeologist anthropologist arrives in Africa's Serengeti to take part in a dig that is about to discover some important finds that will change what we know of early hominids and their evolution. Excited to be working in Africa with a team of esteemed archaeologists, Natalie soon gets her world turned around when soon after arriving, she is witness to a camp murder and must spend time walking on eggshells and becoming part of a political and messy murder trial that involves the local Maasai people.

Half way through this book I just had to give up. This was so boring to me and I found the story dragging along going nowhere fast. The writing is dry, events lackluster, long passages of text that needed to be edited out due to unimportance to the main story, and the characters beyond childish and petty. I couldn't find anything to help me push on to finish this. I was not interested in the story to the point I had gotten to and felt greatly disappointed because I read and love books on Africa, the Serengeti and I have a high interest in the Maasai tribe. I love archaeology as well and was hoping to get some information on what the area would bring to the surface in regards to artifacts or human remains and hoped an interesting plot would revolve around this. But, it didnt appear it was going to happen, and if it did, the author took her time getting there. For me this book didnt happen and felt the storyline held promise but was poorly executed. When a reader finds themselves skimming out of boredom, ....not a good sign. Sorry folks, I just couldnt finish this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clouds Beneath the Sun
You can find quite an interesting group of people at an archeological dig in Kenya in 1961. This is where Natalie Nelson finds herself as part of a remote dig site in the Serengeti. Things are going great until the team runs into grave robbing and a murder that Natalie becomes a key witness of. But of course, that is not all. Natalie finds herself in a battle between two brothers - a competition that has been around for their entire lives.

I don't think anything I say can really do justice to this book. I feel as I was in Kenya, I felt the heat, I heard the animals, I smelled the Serengeti. There was a lot going on in Kenya in the early 60's and I was able to experience a little bit of all of it by reading this book.

The characters were engaging and dynamic, the setting was beautiful. My only complaint is that the author lingered over the political aspects of what was going on in the country in a way that I didn't understand at first.

4/5

2-0 out of 5 stars OK historical novel about archaeologists in Kenya in 1960's
I didn't love this novel about a young, beautiful, archaeologist who's just finished her Ph.D. and goes off to Kenya to work with a renowned female archaeologist excavating remains of early humans.Although the descriptions of the African animals and landscape were beautiful, I didn't really bond with any of the characters. Our heroine is so beautiful that everyone at the dig seems to fall in love with her, and she is constantly needing to be recognized by handsome hero Jack when she gets into trouble from both humans and animals alike. The book takes place right at the time when Kenya was about to become independent from Britain, and the conflicts between the white archaeologists and the Masai natives were the most interesting part of the book. Not a bad book, but I was annoyed by the incredibly beautiful heroine who always seemed to be showering and brushing her hair while at the bush camp!(Is that really an accurate portrayal of life on a dig?)

4-0 out of 5 stars Morally complex picture of 1961 Kenya
Books don't often shock me. I read so much that I seem to be in tune with the narrative flow, I see plot twists coming from miles away, and I'm good at spotting foreshadowing. However, in his second novel, Mackenzie Ford has created a story of such surprising richness that I closed it on the last page, then promptly began thinking if the surprises were fair, if they had been foreshadowed. I had to conclude that I had fair warning of the plot developments all the way through, which makes The Clouds Beneath the Sun all the more extraordinary. In fact, some events were foreshadowed, but I discounted them as impossible to pull off in a realistic fashion. How delighted I was to have been mistaken.

The book opens with Natalie Nelson taking her newly minted Cambridge Ph.D and broken heart to her first dig, in Kenya. Ford (a nom de plume for historian Peter Watson) eases us into the setting with Natalie passing elephants involved in a mourning ritual on the way to the remote camp. I actually had trouble getting into the book at first. An archaeological dig in 1961 Kenya is not an easy setting to evoke, and the "Attention: You Are Now In the 1960s!" details did not feel as effortlessly part of the story as the history and political climate of Kenya. (Examples: that newfangled birth control pill, friends of Natalie's who (gasp) live with men instead of marrying, Natalie's parents utter shock at her disastrous affair with a married man, the publication of Lolita, talk of men going to the moon.) And Natalie's mooning about Dom, her lover, is a bit overdone. However, once I'd made it through the set-up, I could not put this book down. Ford's Kenya is beautiful, vibrant, and complex, so well-drawn that I had no difficulty visualizing it. He lays out the political climate neatly. The moral complexity of the story means that I'm still thinking about the implications.

As Natalie and the others on the dig begin to make extraordinary discoveries in the gorge, she develops relationships with her colleagues. Eleanor, the widow of a celebrated paleontologist, wants to take Natalie under her wing, forcing a confidence that Natalie isn't sure she wants. Eleanor's two sons, Jack and Christopher, vie for her attention, as does Russell, an Australian on the dig. When Richard Sutton, Jr. is found murdered after he and Russell commit an unforgivable act against the Maasai, Natalie is thrust into the center of a political minefield, as the only witness who can implicate one of the Maasai. The tensions between the Maasai and the colonial paleontologists, between blacks and whites (some want a system of apartheid for Kenya, while other groups seek an integrated society, and still others want all the whites ejected), between English law and tribal custom, are absolutely riveting. Jack, having grown up in Africa, is an honorary Maasai, so his insights are invaluable. These are not easy questions posed by Ford, and he doesn't offer easy answers. The pressure on Natalie to refuse to testify in order to diffuse the political situation is not unwarranted, and she herself wavers between doing what is morally right to her, and doing what may be politically and culturally appropriate.

This is a morally complex novel that evokes a realistic picture of 1961 Kenya, of a country divided by race on the brink of independence, and of an impossible choice. I highly recommend it.

Product Description

The truth could make their one perfect night crumble into dust.

It’s Friday night and advertising agent Stella Sinclair’s plan to catch the red-eye back to New York is fading with the Montana sunset. She’ll do anything to land this western-wear company’s account, but what’s she going to do all weekend in this Podunk town?

On the way back to the hotel to watch paint peel from the walls, she makes a quick stop in a local bar to answer the call of nature. One slippery spot later, her stiletto heels are flying—and her fall is broken by the most delicious cowboy she’s ever laid eyes on.

Heaven just dropped into JD Foster’s arms. City girls—and city life—aren’t his style, which made it easy to skip out on his grandfather’s business meeting earlier today. For this classical beauty, though, he just might make an exception.

A drink, a dance, and their chemistry takes the reins. Then JD remembers why Stella’s name seems familiar. She’s courting the family business. JD wants her sighing in pleasure tonight, but for the right reasons. And he’s not above withholding a vital detail or two in order to seal the deal…

Warning: This book contains lies, explicit sex, and betrayal. All necessary elements to light a fire between two people and lay the foundation for some really hot makeup sex.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Little White Lie
Up-and-coming advertising agent Stella Sinclair is determined to score the Toliver account, but to get it she's stuck in Montana for a weekend.Stella doesn't know what she's going to do in the small town. What she does know is that she has to find a bathroom because there's no way she'll make it all the way back to her hotel. When Stella stops at a local bar, she's saved from a fall by gorgeous cowboy JD Foster.Instant attraction sparks between the pair, but what Stella doesn't know is that JD happens to be a member of the family whose business she's courting.JD wants Stella, for the right reasons, so he doesn't tell her everything about himself. After all, what's the harm in one little white lie?

A Little White Lie is a sexy romance that'll capture you hook, line, and sinker.Stella, a fish-out-of-water city girl in Montana, is smart, funny, and sweet, which makes her immensely likeable. As for JD...get out a fan - Mackenzie McKade sure does know how to write some seriously hot cowboys.I found JD every bit as irresistible as Stella did and together those two practically burned the pages of the book to ash.A Little White Lie zips along at a rapid pace, but though it's a fast read, it's a thoroughly satisfying one.I absolutely adored A Little White Lie and am thankful to Ms. McKade for penning yet another utterly delicious cowboy hero.

4-0 out of 5 stars Linda's Hit and Miss - But I Love Her Still
I love Linda Howard's books - even though there are some I like a little less than others. She makes these characters come alive and you want to be a part of their lives. In this anthology, the stories of Zane (Mackenzie's Pleasure) and Chance (A Game of Chance) are told.

Zane is a Navy SEAL who rescues Barrie Lovejoy from the clutches of some nasty men and instantly falls for her.By the time you finish the first chapter, you're routing for him to save her, that small voice in your head repeating "Hurry up Zane, hurry up!".That voice only gets louder as the book continues and you see what a great guy he is and how much they really belong together.Deliciously perfect.

Chance is an anti-terrorism agent who's willing to do whatever it takes to make Sunny Miller spill the beans about her father, an infamous terrorist.Chance makes sure that they're "stranded" together and forces Sunny to rely on him as they work towards rescue.Chance soon discovers that Sunny is a victim of her father, not an accomplice as he'd suspected, and that he needs to keep her safe. But that involves divulging his secrets, which comes to him very reluctantly.I think that Chance is a deviation from the hero's we normally expect from Linda Howard, so he gets a bum rap. He's not always honorable or respectable - two characteristics we typically find in Linda Howard's heroes. This is one of the few Howard books where I really didn't like the hero and I would have understood if she hadn't taken him back at the end.

Mackenzie's Pleasure is definitely worth the buy and you just might enjoy the other if you give it a chance. :D

For more about the Mackenzie family, look for Mackenzie's Mountain - Wolf's story and the beginning of the series (5 stars with a couple of smiley faces to boot) and Mackenzie's Mission - Joe's story and second in the series (4 stars). You can also check out Mackenzie's Magic (4 starts, typically a novella in an anthology) to round out the series with the 5th book and get Maris' story.

For other great Linda Howard books, look for Shades of Twilight (my personal favorite), After the Night, Dream Man, Mr. Perfect (makes you drool and blush at the same time), and Open Season for a delightful mix of romance and suspense. For a bit more suspense than romance, check out some of the more recent books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Two stories
Mackenzie's Pleasure (4 stars):Zane protects Barrie.I still don't really understand why he left the Seals though.

A Game of Chance (3 stars):Chance sets up Sunny. He should be kicked.

Overall the Mackenzie series is well worth reading.Ms. Howard does have a knack for romance.

5-0 out of 5 stars MacKenzies' Honor
Woo, This is one of my favorites. It made you can't stop, I have completed these 2 series (McKenzies' Honor and McKenzies' Lagecy) only in 3 days.I highly recommend thses books for those love romance fiction.

4-0 out of 5 stars 4 stars for one story.3 stars for the other story.
This book contains two stories, described below.

4 stars to MACKENZIE'S PLEASURE.
Nice story.I liked it.I plan to read most of Linda Howard's books. She is an excellent author. Although this was not one of her best, it was still worth reading.Story brief: Ambassador's daughter Barrie is kidnapped.Navy SEAL Zane rescues her. She falls in love with him.She continues to be in danger.

Sexual language: moderate.Number of sex scenes:seven or more.Setting: current day Libya and a few places in USA.Copyright: 1996.Genre: contemporary romantic suspense.

3 stars to A GAME OF CHANCE.
Pretty good. Not great, but I'm glad I read it because I plan to read most of Linda Howard's books. She is an excellent author, although this was not one of her best. The story and characters were reasonably interesting. She wrapped it up a little too quickly and easily at the end.

CAUTION SPOILERS:Chance lied to Sunny through most of the book. When she learned the truth, he didn't try to soften it, justify it or make her feel better. He acted like he couldn't care less how she felt.At that point, she appeared to hate him, and I didn't blame her.A couple of weeks later, in one short conversation, he said he loved her, he got her back, and they married. It seemed too easy.I would have liked to have seen him suffer a little more.Story brief: Terrorist's daughter is on the run, hiding from her father for most of her life.US government agent discovers her and uses her as bait to draw her father to be captured.

Sexual language: moderate.Number of sex scenes: four.Setting: current day, various locations in USA.Copyright: 2000. Genre: contemporary romance with mild suspense at the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love me some MacKenzies!
A great series, fun to read, extremely appealing characters.I know some readers didn't care for Chance quite as much as the other MacKenzie males, but I found him to be quite masculine and very sexy.I think I went through the MacKenzies in record time! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful but lacking
This text has some important ideas that I was able to put to use in the classroom, but it unfortunately lacks the depth and creativity of some of its newer rivals. One book that I loved and highly recommend is "Successful Classroom Management" by Eyster and Martin, just released this summer. While "Setting Limits" covers one aspect of teaching well--dealing with students in the classroom-- it does not have the scope that "Successful Classroom Management" offers, including how to navagate relationships with your supervisor, colleagues, and especially parents. Useful, but definitely not the total package. Recommend: Successful Classroom Management: Real-World, Time-Tested Techniques for the Most Important Skill Set Every Teacher Needs

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent lessons on how to implement respectful discipline
I recently received my copy of Setting Limits in the Classroom, Revised: How to Move Beyond the Dance of Discipline in Today's Classrooms by Robert J. Mackenzie.I am thrilled with the practical advice he gives for identifying one's current disciplinary style and implementing a more effective method of discipline. This is a clearly written book with concise instruction on deals quickly and efficiently with issues in the classroom.I am an adult who has returned to the classroom after years of being away and I feel that I can apply this advice immediately.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good teaching tool
I got this book when I was in college as a requirement for one of my classes. At the time I thought it would be a waste of money and just another 'text book' that I'd have to resell. This book has actually been very helpful in the 5 years I have been teaching. I still go back to it every year when I have a new behavior issue to work through with students. I have great classroom mangaement with the help of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for teachers
This is an easy to read book with an easy and practical approach to setting limits in your classroom.Easy to implement and really works.I am a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant and see many children with behavioral issues.Using the ideas in this book has helped many children learn to control their behavior and enjoy school more. The key is to be consistant!I highly recommend this book to all new teachers and to teachers who have worked in the school systems for a long time and need some help with children in their classroom with behavioral issues. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Listing Correction
I just want to correct this listing.

The book listed here published by Eynon Publishing is a TRUE FIRST EDITION issued in 1935.Reportedly, only 50 books were issued. The author is Captain Robert G. Carter not Charles M. Robinson III.

Amazon has been notified of this error but have not corrected it yet.

4-0 out of 5 stars Texas in the 1870's
The writing style is archaic and the author spends too much time on self aggrandizement but over all it is a good look at the pacification of the Comanches.I wish there were maps included.I would like to visit some of the places mentioned in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Important Classic, Difficult to Read Due to Poor Writing
Almost as important as the text are the Preface, Foreword and Introduction (rare to have all three.)Robinson's Preface puts Carter's book into context and prepares the reader for an interesting, but daunting read.Robinson is absolutely correct in his discussion of the importance of this book as it should be read by anyone interested in the Indian Wars of the West.

This book was written by a real participant of those wars, and as such, is hardly a revisionist, politically correct rendition of how the Army and settlers wronged the Indians. It must be remembered, although Carter was ignorant of this fact, that the Comanches had been forced out of the mountains of Colorado by the Utes in the middle of the 18th century, and in turn expelled or exterminated the existing tribes in the plains of Texas. Now the Americans were coming and displacing the Comanches in one of the inexorable changes that history brings.

MacKenzie was on a par with Andrew Jackson as being one of the two most successful Indian fighters in US history. He graduated 1st in his West Point class of 1862 and rose during the Civil War to Major General at the age of twenty-five.His Indian campaigns were fought against a number of tribes from Mexico to South Dakota, and although he sometimes made mistakes, he did not make them twice. He became mentally ill, possibly in part from being maimed at Petersburg or suffering a later head injury, was retired from the Army in 1884 and died in obscurity in 1889 at the age of forty-nine.For his remarkable successes and military innovations, MacKenzie has been roundly ignored by contemporary academic historians. As always, the history we learn is not what actually happened, but what is written concerning what happened. That is why the serious student must read this book.

As Robinson notes, the prose is overblown and sometimes factually incorrect -- a typical problem in eyewitness accounts.Fortunately, the exaggerations are relatively easy to ascertain from the author's obvious efforts to add color (when none is needed.)It should be emphasized that this is a reprint of the 1935 edition, which was itself a collection of stories written by the author as early as 1886.He passed away in 1936 at the age of 91, the last survivor of the 4th Cavalry who had served under MacKenzie.

If one wishes to become acquainted with MacKenzie and understand Army life in the 1870s fighting Indians in the West, I can think of no better book.It clearly corrects the great harm Hollywood had done to this era, and will introduce the reader to a life he will be hard pressed to find anywhere else. Therefore I gave it a 5 rating, in spite of its obvious flaws.

5-0 out of 5 stars Robert Carter's book is of American History
This book represents the viewpoints of a "policing" time for the United States of the North.Without some form of correctiveness, lawlessness and savageness would have ruled the day and Texas would not be a part of the nation today.
It is exciting, horrifying, glorifying, and it is sad at times.
This book must be pulled from the graveyard of literature for open forums to discuss the past.Without actual accounts of yesterday protrayed today, everyone will be able to re-write history to match their own personal or social, economical, and political viewpoints instead. An American treasure is being lost to the dusts of time...James L. 5-0 out of 5 stars Should Be In The Library Of Every Serious U.S. Western History Student
An excellent book. A very well-written and well-researched book. One of the best books I have ever read regarding the Southern Plains Indian Wars. MacKenzie was a very enigmatic person and a very irascible person, but a very brilliant military leader - among the best of the best of the 19th century.

5-0 out of 5 stars ...and he's forgotten??
This was a good book. General MacKenzie WAS the great American Indian/bandit fighter which spawned the myth(?) of the American West in the next century (John Wayne played MacKenzie's role in "Rio Grande").As for his place in history, he was not shot down in his prime the way the inept Custer was, and as a result, he has all but been forgotten in Western lore (his going mentally insane didn't help matters either).

The book reads easily, flows well and the author doesn't bog you down with unimportant details.I recommend this book to anyone with a mild-to-high curiosity about the Indian Wars and the history of the American Southwest in the late 1800s.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Bad Hand" Worthy of Remembrance
I thoroughly enjoyed this book.Coverage of Ranald Mackenzie is rather sparse and this book does a great job of detailing the man's entire life.Mackenzie was one of the many frontier heros who did not gain the notariety of other Indian fighters, but he was one of the most successful.Mackenzieshowed the ability to learn from his mistakes and adapt tactics asnecessary. He also served in all the theaters of Indian warfare (NorthernPlains, Southern Plains, US/Mexico Border, and Arizona). This book is easyand entertaining to read and will hopefully help us remember an Indianfighter that history has tried to forget. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Easy Applique Blocks: 50 Designs in 5 Sizes (That Patchwork Place
This is a very useful and fun book. I usually just do patchwork when I make quilts but occassionaly I like to applique blocks especially when I am participating in 'Friendship block' swaps. The patterns in this book are ideal. There are plenty to choose from with varying themes. The CD is brilliant as I can just print out a design in the size I choose, and any quantity that I want. In 'A Little Gallery of Ideas' at the end of the book there are fun projects using the blocks. I especially like 'Good Night, Sleep Tight' and 'Blooms in Red and Yellow'. There are excellent instructions on various way to applique using freezer paper, hand or machine stitching. Lots of fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is a great book with lots of applique patterns. Having five sizes available is so handy and the cd is easy even for me!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have to any applique quilter
The very first thing that caught my eye was the CD that comes with EASY APPLIQUÉ BLOCKS.How wonderful that I can print out my templates to any size I want.Yes, the book says 6, 8, 9, 10 and 12 inch blocks but that doesn't mean I can't make a 7 inch size if I want. That's what creativity is all about! So not only do you have 50 designs in 5 sizes you have 50 designs in ANY size you want.

The book begins with how to print from the CD.This is very nice for anyone needing help with a computer. For those of use that are computer savvy on our own, it gives us extra tips which are always helpful. You can always learn something new.

The block library pages show the block in a black and white outline as well as a full color print sitting side-by-side.Of course, you can always use fabrics of your choice but for those of use that need a boost on color suggestions, this is a huge help. The appliqués are simplistic in that there are not a lot of intricate details.Simple and clean designs make beautiful quilts IMHO.

The appliqué tips section has two suggestions that I have never seen before but makes perfect sense to me.First, if you need glasses, get and use them.If you can't see what you are doing, it won't look good when it is done.Second, be sure to have good light.Again, if you can't see, you won't make good blocks. And don't forget to read the extra tips contained in colored boxes scattered throughout the book.

How to make appliqués are given in the next section.Of course, as the author says, only a couple of ways are given. There are many more ways to do appliqué.Use what works best for you but if you haven't ever done appliqué, the suggestions given are a perfect way to start.

Two more sections contain information on how to hand stitch and machine stitch the appliqués.Be sure to read through them for any tips/help you might need. And the final two sections are a gallery of ideas on how to use the appliqués and a bio on the author. This is one book that will remain in my library to use over and over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy Applique Blocks
This book is fantastic and very easy to use.The great thing is you can print out your applique blocks in several different sizes. I have already made about 20 of the blocks and love the finished product. There are also a lot of helpful tips/hints.

5-0 out of 5 stars sensuality scale is off the map
Wolf Mackenzie, being half Indian-Anglo, struggles to maintain his low key profile in a town where he is not accepted by its white inhabitants. His low key profile is abliterated when new teacher comes to town and changes his life forever. This is a really sensual read and it's kind of fun.

Product Description
From Canada's greatest political journalist comes the astonishing story of Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King. As the original edition described this award-winning book:

"He appeared to the public a drab little man, round of face and body, who spoke in banalities. Behind this facade lay the skill of a political genius and a mind sharp enough to confound all his contemporaries. Radical, reformer, scholar, philosopher, historian, spiritualist, Mackenzie King was the Incredible Canadian. He grasped the reins of a leaderless party, brought it to power and then clung to the Prime Minister's office longer than any man in the history of the British Commonwealth. Few people have understood the convolutions of Mackenzie King's mind, his complexity, his contradictions, his idealism and devotion to Canada as does Bruce Hutchison. The Incredible Canadian has all the elements of thrilling fiction. It refutes for all time the notion that Canadian history is dull or includes no colourful figures. This is more than a biography of Mackenzie King. Rather it is the engrossing story of the times which created the man and how the man shaped the times to suit his purposes."

The Incredible Canadian was awarded the Governor General's Award for creative nonfiction. The Wynford edition includes a new introduction by Vaughn Palmer, one of Canada's foremost political journalists and a winner of the Bruce Hutchison Award. Palmer's introduction puts both the book and Hutchison's career in historical context for modern readers. ... Read more
