5-0 out of 5 stars Madsen has some real talent
I've always thought that Madsen was one of the most underrated actors ever, and now he's definitely an underrated writer as well. I'm still waiting for him to get what he deserves. I've really enjoyed this book, and just reading it let's you into his life and adventures. You share in his joy and his pain. Looking for an interesting read, get this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can I just say WOW
I have always been a fan of Michael Madsen in the movies, so I thought why not when I saw this book.I haven't read to far in yet, I just got it the other day.It takes a poetry to a whole new level. Its really eye opening.I know most people think of celebs as entertainment and that's about it.This book will show you that celebs are people just like everyone else.Michael talks about everything in this book, from times with prositutes, to movies, to sad times to missing his wife, and everything in between.
It's a really great book
I would reccomend it even it you aren't a Madsen fan but then again how can you not be a Madsen fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars "mystique" to real man....
I have always loved Michael Madsen as an actor. He's one of my favorites and I, admitedly, have a bit of a crush on him.So being a "recorder of life" myself, when I saw this book, had to have it.I've always loved the rough, tough guys he plays, but reading this, you learn that's not just who he is...Madsen jumps of the pages and goes from "mystique" to man...larger than life actor to a real life, down to earth family man who loves his wife and children more than life, and worries about his boys and the world they're growing up in...just like everyone else. You actually get to know him through his writing. He has pieces for everyone, and pieces that introduce you to a world you've never been a part of.From the beginning with "Tears" to the end with "When Pets Kill" you travel through life with him and feel what he's felt and worry about what he worries about. It's an amazing ride from front cover to back cover and I HIGHLY recommend this to any fan of Madsen and/or poetry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do not let the word "poetry" keep you from experiencing this great book...
This is not your ordinary "roses are red, violets are blue..." type poetry. Michael's work is great. Take this from me, a person who really dislikes reading, this book is a must have!!!!!!!!!!! I started reading Michael's book and I could not put it down. His writings can make you rethink things, laugh, and even cry at times. He is honest and raw, a true mans man with a soft side. A father, a family man, an actor, a poet; Michael is so great at all he does and it is truly a shame that most people only see him as Mr. Blonde.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mirna's take on poetM.M.
No words can truly describe the poetry by M.M. Except you really must experience it for yourself and in doing so gain new admiration and respect for aMANwho can express he's own opinions thru writing about his own life however personal these experiences are you live thru it all the funny, bad, good,
painful, cruel, just, inquisitive, and shrewd.

Definitely a poetry original must read from a talented writer.
Although not recommended for the sensitive or easily offended type since M.M.'swriting is strong, straightforward, graphic and raw. Which by the way is what makes it magnetically good. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A vibrantly distinctive compilation that smoothly fuses art, life, experience, and at the close, the tragic site of Terezin.
Actor and poet Michael Madsen presents Signs of Life, a stunning blend of full-color photography and free-verse poetry. Featuring a full-color photographs of unusual signs from hotels, diners, lounges, small businesses, and more, Signs of Life enhances the brilliant glimpses of Americana with scattering of free-verse poems, many of them about life on the road. A vibrantly distinctive compilation that smoothly fuses art, life, experience, and at the close, the tragic site of Terezin. "Terezin": We went to the camp today, / A place of death and horror, / A place like no other I've ever been. // Surviving. Alone. Lost and forgotten. / Left for dead - // Work will set you free: Arbeit Macht Frei

5-0 out of 5 stars Keep up the great work!!!!!!!!!!!
Another book showing us more about the man behind the actor.Michael is a very deep and caring man who sees so much in life whether it be good or bad.He notices things other people probably don't and would rather not notice, with this book "Signs of Life" not only did he write about them he has also made the step into photographing them as well.Influenced by his pal Dennis Hopper's display of pictures he had taken of doors from all over the world, Michael worked from that idea and created a interesting book of his own.The book is dedicated to the memory of his ole friend Chris Penn and includes a very touching poem about him as well. This book shows us that already a lot has happened to Michael since we read new poetry from him; he has of course filmed more movies, was unfortunately surrounded by a lot of deaths, in general living out more of the "lonely actor's life" - having to be away from his family, and anxiously awaiting the arrival of his latest son Luke.Michael can really make you think and makes you look at things in a whole new light.I am so glad that he didn't give up on his writings, hopefully soon the rest of the world will see his talent in all that he does, and acknowledge him for it all.

You are so talented in everything you do Michael, don't ever stop! You and 13 Hand's keep up the great work

1-0 out of 5 stars Critique of the critics of the critics
Putting aside all of the ad hominem attacks--I never got beat up by a Michael Madsen tough guy in grade school, nor do I write poetry in iambic pentameter, nor do I consider myself an intellectual or pseudo-intellectual--you guys are just plain wrong. Madsen's writing is awful. Sometimes it takes more GUTS to acknowledge that a completed work belongs in your sock drawer and not in the bookstore.

If indeed Madsen's book is found in the hands of "people in the gutter," then there must not be very many "people in the gutter." As of today, his book ranks 881,837 in sales, just ahead of "Tenant-in-common ownership expands 1031 exchange opportunities.

Most authors aren't trying to win the Pulitzer either. But millions of people read some of those authors. There's a reason why no one is reading Madsen. I assume you can figure it out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Critique of the critics
I find it laughable that the pumans who write the most negative comments hide behind "A Reader" ie the "fifth grade teacher." Is it that they don't want to risk a rekindling memory of, as mentioned in another review, an ass kickin at the hands of a thespian like Michael Madsen. Look he didn't construct that book hoping to appease and enlighten you pseudo-intellectuals out there in Pulitzer Prize land, this is obvious. What he has done though is put his very most personal thoughts into words and had the GUTS to publish them for all to enjoy, or in some of your cases which don't amount to anything, criticize.

1-0 out of 5 stars HYSTERICAL!!!
This "poet" writes so poorly that the book makes for a great laugh. In fact, I can't remember reading anything so funny. At a recent gathering, my friends and I took turns doing dramatic readings of his work, until we were all laughed out. His poems are forced, trite, cliche and just plain stupid. There isn't a single enlightening thought in this whole book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Please
Maybe I receieved a different copy of Madsen's book than the rest of the reviewers out there. My version contains some of the worst poetry I've ever read, and that includes the scrawlings of the fifth grade class that I teach. Sophomoric, trite and forced - his writing is so bad that most of it is just laughable.

Madsen makes frequent use of lists in his book, and here's mine in his honor:

Number of poets I've encountered who are worse than Madsen:

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm not allowed to have a lighter
Michael Madsen is cool.I gave this five stars. He's got his own lighter. Some people don't think lighters are cool, but they're like my mom and they don't have one so how would they know.I don't like poetry. It makes me mad, and his poems are dirty.I especially don't like dirty poetry because they have words you can't use unless you want to go to jail.

Did you ever see that movie Donnie Brasco. If you look closely, you'll see him. There are exactly zero poems in Donnie Brasco.I liked it better than Donnie Darko.

I gave this five stars. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars MR. BLONDE IS A "BLESSING IN DISGUISE!"
I bought this book at Borders last year and attended a reading/signing with Michael Madsen. It's great on the page, but it's even better on stage!!! When Madsen reads his poetry in his trademark raspy voice, he just grabs you by the ears and leaves listeners hanging on his every word (this book is also availble on Spoken Word CD--BUY IT!). If you ever get a chance check him out at a local signing... it's worth the trip! "A Blessing of the Hounds" yields some great poetry, intimate photos and a rare glimpse into a complex entertainment personality. I especially liked "Sinatraless" and "Virginia." Madsen's poetry is existential at times, humorous at other times-- he gets you thinking. He's a rebel like Rimbaud.

Mr. Blonde is not such a bad guy afterall... or is he? READ THE BOOK! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Eating Those Eggs
Michael Madsen's poems are evocative and real. He holds nothing back and discards devices, contrivances and coherence in presenting his thoughts. My favorite work is his poem (or perhaps he would refer to it as a rambling) titled "Movies."

Here are a few excerpts:

"Marlon Brando finding the dead Pigeons on his roof.
Gloria Swanson walking down those fu-king stairs and
Bette Davis testing the weight of a rifle."

The ending is poetry/ramblery at its most powerful. It captures how all of us are on journeys in our lives, but only few are famous:

"We are all on the run.
From the richest Maharajah
to the lowest, dirty, stinking pedophile.
The big, the wrong, the last, the found,
the forgotten, the remembered,
the free and all the long timers.

All on the run,
one way or another.

Yesterday I was the answer to 46 Down
in a crossword puzzle
in the L.A. Times."

Madsen brings his keen insightful vision to record our common movie-going experience using a confessional type of experimental prose that becomes a becomes a wild mixture of abrupt confessions, lyrical perceptions, disjointed observations, and ironic asides:

"Tim Roth as the only interesting money and
Harry Dean walking and making Paris, Texas. Watching
Paul Newman eating those eggs."

I highly recommend picking up this book as well as "Signs of Life" or his complete collection "Volume 1: 1995-2005."

5-0 out of 5 stars 46 Down: A Book of Dreams & Other Ramblings
Actor Michael Madsen has been compared to as "today's Robert Mitchum." I would go so far as to say he is also "today's Charles Bukowski." The poetry featured in "46 Down" continues to capture the same intense, introspective and honest writing. Highlighted poems are: "Forgivness," "Goodbye Buk," "Bitch," and "The Doer." He still can walk the walk... and talk the talk!

I would also recommend "A Blessing of the Hounds." ... Read more

Book Description
This volume is concerned with establishing the ways in which English Studies, with its capacity to embrace a diversity of practices, methodologies, voices, and even subjects, realizes its potential for interdisciplinarity by incorporating new media into its teaching. The World Wide Web has firmly established English as the lingua franca of the Internet. With this development in mind, the volume seeks to provide a cross-cultural representation of how teachers and students on both sides of the Atlantic have embraced new technologies and media at the beginning of the Internet Age. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Administering Successful Programs
Galbraith, M.W., Sisco, B.R., & Guglielmino, L.M. Administering Successful Programs for Adults: Promoting Excellence in Adult, Community and Continuing Education. Krieger Publishing Company, Malabar, FL, 1997. Pp. vii + 187. When the opportunity to review a book written by three acknowledged professionals, in not only adult educational instruction, but also in research and publication, the expectation of quality would seem foreseeable. In this case, the expectation was a reality. From the "Preface" to the final chapter, the student is presented with a clear, concise, and literary explanation, of a relevant and timely topic, the administration of programs. To often, authors of scholarly texts, find it necessary to use professional language, understandable only by experts in the discipline or subject matter. This is not the case with this publication. The text was written and published with current, or "would be", administrators in mind. The primary goal of the authors is to convey a basic understanding of the administrative process. The authors of Administering Successful Programs for Adults, include in their "Preface", an excellent synopsis of the book. The text has nine chapters. Chapter 1 is concerned with and titled the "Administrator".This chapter "...examines the settings and contexts in which the administrative role is carried out", and includes "...a self-assessment inventory that allows", students to discover pertinent knowledge about themselves (p.viii).Chapter 2, "Approaches to Administration", is just that. The authors examine, "The classical, human relations, organization behavior, contingency, and systems perspectives..." and "...their appropriateness for adult, community, and continuing education" (p.viii).In Chapter 3, "Determining Program Content", they address "...the administrator's role and involvement in the process of determining program content", with an emphasis on the macro approach."Budgeting and Financing" are the topics of Chapter 4.Different types of budgets are discussed, along with "...useful tips on how to develop a successful budget..." and "...and how to augment funding..." (p.viii).Chapter 5, "Selecting and Developing Staff", explains that this "...is an essential function of administrators in adult, community, and continuing education agencies and organizations" (p.viii).A plan is presented which includes ideas on role identification, selection, and development, of staff."Marketing and Public Relations", "Chapter 6, is dedicated to the understanding of marketing and the essential elements of a marketing plan and promotional strategies" (p.ix).Chapter 7, "Evaluating Programs", "...is devoted to the process of evaluating programs for adult", and includes suggestions on "...the design and application of an evaluation plan" (p.ix)."Legal and Ethical Considerations", is the subject of Chapter 8.These include, "...affirmative action and equal employment opportunity guidelines..." as well as information about "...the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990..." and "...ethical dilemmas confronting the administrator..." (p.ix). Chapter 9 is concerned with "Maintaining Effectiveness As an Administrator", "...through professional development of yourself and others" (p.ix).It "...concludes with a brief annotated listing of resources found to be particularly helpful in ensuring administrative and organizational success" (p.ix). This content summary presents a view of the explicit and concise style of this text. Administrating Successful Programs for Adults was written as an introductory text or primer, to be used and perused by "would be", new, or existing administrators. It will not replace Niccolo Machiavelli's, The Prince. It will, because of its condensed or abbreviated style, be a useful tablet. The theme of each chapter is clearly developed and the included "Summary" is a definite plus. There are an adequate, not an overpowering, number of explanatory tables, models and charts. The numbering system for these items, at the bottom, rather than the more common placement at the top, seemed awkward. The documentation and referencing of source and contemporary or companion literature is complete and aptly supplemented by the brief but sufficient annotated listing included in Chapter 9.Fortunately, which is not always the case in referenced material, the authors documentation, in this text, does not interrupt or detract from the intended subject matter. There is nothing unique about the organization or presentation of the information available, or the written prose, in Administrating Successful Programs for Adults, except that the style and substance could be used as an example of plain English. This style, one of clarity, not circumlocution, is not found, often enough, in academic publications. We live in a world of administrating and administrators. In order to progress and prosper, we must continually create and implement compromise. It is extremely difficult to reach a position where compromise is a possibility, much less a reality, without administrative assistance. The use of this text can assist in making compromise a possibility. I fear that the authors have, unwittingly, underestimated their audience. They have proposed, that "...adult, community and continuing educational programs for adults"(p.x), might benefit from this publication. These are, for me, the underestimated audience. The general resource nature of this volume, its ability to present the administrative process in broad strokes, and in clear and plain vocabulary, make it a viable and usable document, for this every growing and demanding group of learners and activists. These groups, adult, community and continuing educational organizations, must have access to the administrative expertise that will lead them in the direction of compromise, if they are to be the positive and productive force they should and intent to be. Many adult, community and continuing educational texts address the concept of the "Critical Thinker". The essence of "Critical Thinking" is very clear explained in Administering Successful Programs of Adults.I consider the process of "Critical Thinking", a clear and detailed road to reaching compromise, a result desired by any progressing administrative program.Although administering compromise, is only one of many important concepts included in this text, I find this example, a sterling explanation of why, I believe the authors attained their goal, of publishing a book and thereby providing a primer for, easy access to knowledge of the administrative process. ...
