Product Description

As the grandson of Henry “Light-Horse Harry” Lee and the nephew of Robert E. Lee, Fitzhugh Lee—nicknamed “Fitz”—was born into one of Virginia’s most distinguished families.

Upon graduation from West Point, Fitz Lee served in the U.S. Army until the outbreak of the Civil War, when he joined the Confederate cavalry forces. After participating in the Peninsula Campaign, he rapidly rose in rank, promoted first to brigadier general in July 1862, then to major general in the fall of 1863. Only twenty-seven years old, he commanded with distinction at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. Severely wounded in 1864, he subsequently returned to service and was promoted to commander of the cavalry of the Army of Northern Virginia, which he led during the final campaigns of the war.

After the war Fitz Lee served as governor of Virginia, commander of the U.S. Volunteers in the Spanish-American War, and postwar occupation commander in Cuba. He also wrote many popular works of military history and biography; his biography of Robert E. Lee is still in print.

Acclaimed Civil War author Edward G. Longacre has combed family records, West Point cadet files, and the National Archives to produce a lively biography of one of the South’s youngest and ablest cavalry commanders—a man who later became one of America’s most distinguished military leaders.

2-0 out of 5 stars He dined on shad at Five Forks
Longacre provides the basic facts of the life of Fitzhugh Lee, who clearly benefitted from his name and relationship to his uncle Robert. His West Point career was nearly as unimpressive as those of George Pickett and George Custer. His Civil War performance, while sometimes solid, culminated in disaster. He left his post to join Pickett and Tom Rosser for a shad bake at Five Forks. While they were dining, and possibly drinking, Sheridan overran Confederate positions and doomed the Army of Northern Virginia. Worth reading to provide some useful information about this senior cavalry leader. But, one comes away less then awed by his actual record.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fitz Lee
Although I'm a fan of Mr. Longacre's previous works (The Cavalry at Gettysburg & Cavalry at Appomattox to name a few) I found this book lacking in objectivity. He starts the work praising Fitz Lee's service prior to the war but then does a "180" in throwing in what appears to be his own commentary and what he thinks Ftz Lee was thinking regarding his less than close relationships with John Mosby and, especially, Gen. Wade Hampton. All without footnotes or specific background information. He even states that M/Gen. "Jeb" Stuart was enraged and took him to task for an incident early in the war where Stuart was almost captured when waiting for Lee's regiment to meet him. I've read many books regarding that particular part of the war and this is the first I've heard of Stuart being "enraged" about that particular matter. No footnotes or background was presented by Longacre to support his belief. These type of comments are plentiful in the book, almost as if Mr. Longacre was there, which he wasn't. His previous works regarding cavalry operations are very well supported by documentation from the war. This one isn't and he throws around his assumptions and opinions as if they were facts. I'm afraid Mr. Longacre should stick to documenting civil war cavalry history where he can back up his writings with written accounts and facts. In "Fitz Lee" he doesn't hit the mark at all. It'll be a while before I read another of his "biographies". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book about a true American hero.
Remember Reno is the true story of how one man's life can make a differance in history
It traces his life as a young man entering West Point
Surveying a road to the West
Going to war with Mexico
Writing the militaries artilliary manual
His duty as an armory comander and it's capture as one of the first actions of the Civil War
To his becomming General in charge of his own Division
His men loved him and he did well in all the battles he fought
He was shot by a lone snipers bullet while reviewing the front line
The city of Reno Nevada is named after him
Perhaps I am biased because He was my Great Uncle but if you would like to read about a true American Hero read it and then decide for yourself
I'm sure it will give you a new appreceation for the name of "The biggest little city in the world"

4-0 out of 5 stars cult heroes
I 've been a "six million dollar man" fan as long as i can remenber(which kid never dreamed before steve and jaime's feats?),so when i saw this book i couldn't resist buying it.I haven't been disapointed,it's aswell documented as illustrated(it's filed with infos about lee majors, richard anderson and lindsay wagner's bios),wich reminds me to watch again "WILL PENNY" where a promising lee majors worked along with Charlton Heston in the most moving western ever made.
To get back to the book, the format is a bit thin, aside that it's easy readind(you just can't drop it!).I wish Lee Majors would write his autobiography, he's got so much to say about these days.

5-0 out of 5 stars love it

5-0 out of 5 stars I highly enjoyed this book and think that you will too
George, Sandy, Tommy and Will are four seventeen year old Boy Scouts, carefree and looking for adventure. When they are sent to a Pennsylvania coal mine to look for a couple of lost boys, they quickly get to realizing that things aren't all that they appear to be. There's a deep mystery here, as deep as the Labyrinth Mine, and with a little pluck and daring (not to mention a little luck), the Boy Scouts will get to the bottom of it.

This book was first printed in 1915, when the Boy Scouts were new to the United States, and not clearly understood. Several pulp fiction authors took the idea of boys in uniform, having fun and adventure, and ran with it. This book is one of those books. So, this is a story of boys, armed with pistols, fighting bad guys, and taking rewards for a good deed.

But, does that mean that this is a bad book? Far from it! The author of this book wove a wonderful story of adventure, daring, action and good fun! Yes, I highly enjoyed this book and think that you will too. If you are a fan of early-twentieth century boys fiction, then you must read this book. [If you want a great, old-fashioned Boy Scout book, then you must read "Tom Slade" by Percy K. Fitzhugh, which is the crown of the genre!]
