5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!Not Standard Regency Fare!
This book was languishing on my bookshelf and I was not sure why I had originally purchased it but the previous review induced me to read it.The back cover does not describe the tempest that is contained within the pages.

Sir Patrick is portrayed as a rather devil may care gentleman in pursuit of married women and a slight interest in marrying to produce an heir. That is of course the normal fare of a Regency novel. But we are privy to much of his thoughts and feelings and we are drawn into his psyche and understand why he became self-serving.

Chloe Transome, our poor relation, is such a wonderful character. She has true backbone though she must hide much of her sparkle to keep her position. She has been shunted from various positions and now finds herself in charge of her cousin's daughter. Her life is rather wretched and deteriorates even lower towards the end of her employment with her cousin.

The cousin, Lady Marchingham, is one nasty woman, jealous and spiteful. She wants her cake and eat it too and thinks she has pulled the wool over her rather staid husband Charles. She has numerous affairs, Sir Patrick being her latest interest. She invites him to her country home and as a cover he "courts" Marianne, Chloe's charge.

But as Charles (who turns out to be one of the best secondary characters I ever read about!) thwarts his wife's plans to continue her affair with Sir Patrick, there is a definite twist when Sir Patrick realizes the charm that Chloe holds close.Lord Marchingham even helps the romance between Patrick and Chloe along. There were mild sensual interludes that one usually does not find in normal Regency novels but I found very tasteful and pertinent to the storyline.

I will not go into the details of the story - you must read it - but I found it heart stopping with each turn of events. There is elation and depths of despair. Many wonderful secondary characters and there is more than one villain though some are wretched and pitiful indeed! This is full of angst and is not light-hearted at all.You will be kept wondering how a happy ending can be obtained - but as usual, it is.Great reading - obtain this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Magnificent!
Sir Patrick Ramsay came to visit his married mistress Serena and her eligible young cousin, a possible candidate for the position of his wife.He never expected to be attracted to Chloe Transome, the chit's proper duenna, an aging spinster of 29 years. As they deal with their personal securities, the lovers are beset by jealous relatives, eager to destroy them.

Get your hankies out for the denoument of this tale of two lonely people afraid to trust in love. This regency is not a sedate book of manners, expect lots of love scenes, witty and risque repartee and an emotional ride that will leave you sighing in satisfaction at the end. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Book
This book was pretty good and very reasonable, price-wise.I was looking for ideas to use to decorate my mantle and I did get them from this.

3-0 out of 5 stars fireplace book
This is a good book for pictures of fireplaces, but I needed more information on what I now know are zero clearance fireplaces...and whether a large screen television can ever be placed above a zero clearance fireplace--info like that. So the book wasn't that great for my specific purposes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than expected!
This book was everything I was hoping for & more! So much practical information and ideas. This book had ideas no matter where your fireplace is located or what your style is.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a single idea for me
Like another reviewer said, The Fireplace Design Sourcebook by Melissa Cardona is a much better choice. Why he gave this book 5 stars anyway I can't figure out.I have over 20 postits marking pages in the other book and not a single one in this book. Not a single idea for the stone, mantle, or anything worth using.Way too much filler writing that didn't apply to anything, describing styles and types that are never applied in real world designs.

"The Inglenook is a charmingly old-fashioned idea and the word itself is equally quaint.Ingle is a British word for..."Well, you get the idea.

I can see the point that this book has a good decorating focus, but I still don't think it is a great book even for that and if you are just looking for fireplace ideas I think you will find this lacking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
The Better Homes & Gardens book "Fireplace Decorating & Planning Ideas" is an excellent book. We are building a new home, and were looking for fireplace designs for ideas. There is also a lot of "how to" information, in which we weren't particularly interesed, but the book gave us some good ideas. An even better book, for our application, which we ordered at the same time, is a Schiffer Book by Melissa Cardona entitled "The Fireplace Design Sourcebook" It has more photographs, and an enormous variety of fireplace designs to peruse. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Be Careful When You Buy This Used
Overall this was an informative book.Unfortunately, my used copy had two critical pages torn out, and another page had a photograph that had been cut out.Be careful when you buy a used book--this was my first experience doing so--I wouldn't have thought a book that didn't have all it's original pages could be sold on Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative
Great book . Had lots of interesting ideas. It explains the whys and hows of curb appeal. Not only does it give you beautiful images, it provides you with step by step instructions on how to execute some of them as well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Curb Appeal is fair to middlin'
This book is an attempt by the authors to cover an extremely large body of knowledge in a very short time frame. The principles of both landscape and home architecture that underpin what we refer to as "curb appeal" are extremely complex. By using examples to illustrate appealing design the learning process is made much easier, if rather superficial. A good book for the beginner who needs to do something right away and who does not have the time nor inclination to undertake a deeper study of the many issues involved in the concept of "curb appeal".

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE all the ideas in this book!!
This book had fantastic ideas for our remodeling project. We actually picked the color of our house from one of the pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love the show... Love the book!

4-0 out of 5 stars An Unconventional Heiress (Large Print Mills & Boon Australian Regency Romance)
The Lady and the Convict!Lots of emotion and drama in this Australian Regency romance. This is one of six books in 'The Dilhorne Dynasty' series.Although published later, it is the prequel to the series, and tells the story of Dr. Alan Kerr and Sarah Langley, who are the great friends of Tom Dilhorne in the 'Dilhorne' series book "Hester Waring's Marriage".Other titles in the 'Dilhorne' series include "A Strange Likeness", "An Innocent Masquerade", and "His One Woman".

4-0 out of 5 stars Three Christmas stories in one book
From the back of the book:

A Christmas Rose - Paula Marshall
Fleeing to Yorkshire, her reputation in tatters.Rose was tempted to play the reckless courteson with Sir Miles Heyward . . .

The Unexpected Guest - Deborah Simmons
When a mysterious, seductive young widow sought shelter at Campion Castle, the head of the mighty de Burgh family found his yuletide peace shattered . . .

Christmas at Bitter Creek - Ruth Langan
The man was trouble, but Laura Conners could no longer cope alone on the ranch.Would Matthew Braden stay and make this a Christmas to remember?

These three stories all have a Christmas theme but otherwise they are very different. The first story takes place mostly at Morton Castle in Yorkshire, England during the 1800's.The second story takes place also at a castle but during the Medieval time period. The third story is in the midwestern United States (Arizona territory) during the 1880's.All three stories are simple, believable and touching. It's rare to find one of these books where three different stories by three different authors are all equally good, but I believe that's the case with this book.If I had to pick a favorite, it would have to be the Deborah Simmons story.I have read it before and loved it so much at that time that I later bought all the rest of the books in the de Burgh family series and will happily buy more if/when the author writes another. ...
