5-0 out of 5 stars Anne's House of Dreams
This is my definete favorite of "Anne of Green Gables." My favorite characaters were the Fords and Capt. Jim. Anne and Gilbert were great, too (who would have known that Anne married the person who called her 'carrots'?!). I liked the entire story-line, and it wasn't boring or pushed or anything. "Anne of Green Gables" is one of my favorite series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anne and Gilbert, Together At Last...
"Anne's House of Dreams" is the fifth book in Lucy Maud Montgomery's superb "Anne of Green Gables" series. At long last, Anne and Gilbert return to Avonlea, she from three years as principal and teacher at Summerside, he from medical school, for a wedding among family and friends at Green Gables. They will begin their married life at the remote village of Glen St. Mary, in the seaside cottage that will become Anne's house of dreams.

In Glen St. Mary, Anne and Gilbert will make new friends: their beautiful but embittered neighbor Leslie Moore, the ancient lighthouse keeper and storyteller Captain Jim, and the abrasive but good-hearted spinster Cornelia Bryant.Anne's talent for deep friendships will be put to the test as the unique stories of each of her friends play out in "House of Dreams."

Anne and Gilbert will learn new roles, she as wife, housekeeper, and mother, he as husband, father, and as the new doctor in town. They will experience their first argument, over one of Gilbert's patients, and their first tragedy as a couple, regarding their first child. However, their love for each other will carry them, and the reader, to real joy in the life they will make together.

Thanks to Montgomery's superb prose and honest characterization, Anne is as irresistable in her newly married life as she has been in earlier books."Anne's House of Dreams" is very highly recommended to her fans of all ages.

4-0 out of 5 stars Anne Has New Dreams
Anne's House of Dreams is the fifth book in L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables series. The book begins with Anne and Gilbert's wedding at Green Gables, and chronicles the first few years of their lives together through happiness and hardship.

Despite the fact that Anne and Gilbert finally seem to get their happy ending in Anne's House of Dreams, some of the magic of the earlier books is lost in this novel. I can't really put my finger on any one thing and say, "that's it - that's where it went wrong," but something is definitely missing.

Anne, of course, is still Anne - a young woman with a enviable zest for life, who seems to touch the lives of everyone around her - but one thing has changed: she's forsaken her creative dreams for a set of different dreams. It was a switch from the Anne I've come to know and love, and I didn't really care for it. Montgomery has also created another fabulously eccentric cast of characters, but they don't seem as well-drawn as past characters.

Thankfully Montgomery's writing is still beautiful. She was a master of descriptive and lyrical fiction:
"The garret was a shadowy, suggestive, delightful place, as all garrets should be. Through the open window, by which Anne sat, blew the sweet, scented, sun-warm air of the August afternoon; outside, poplar boughs rustled and tossed in the wind; beyond them were the woods, where Lover's Lane wound it's enchanted path, and the old apple orchard, which still bore it's rosy harvests munificently." Can't you just picture it? The one thing that remains wonderful about this series is Montgomery's wonderful style of writing.

Although it is not my favorite, Anne's House of Dreams is still worth reading. This novel has lost a little of the "feel" of the earlier books, but still makes a good addition to Anne's story.

5-0 out of 5 stars What I was looking for, exactly!
I am so very, very pleased that the book that was sent to me is identical to the cover shown on the product page! When I was younger, I only got the first 4 books of the series, and have only held off on purchasing the final 4 until I could find the matching cover style. I am VERY pleased with the book, as it is precisely in the condition it was described to be, and have the cover art I was looking for!

5-0 out of 5 stars Anne's House of Dreams
For those who love Anne of Green Gables, this book is one to cherish. It is the fifth book in the series. In the books between Green Gables and House of Dreams, Anne grows up, quarrels with Gilbert, goes to school, teaches, makes up with Gilbert, and gets engaged. In House of Dreams, Anne and Gilbert finally get married and settle down with a small medical practice in a cove on Prince Edward Island. They meet an interesting old lighthouse keeper with many stories to tell, Anne makes friends with Gilbert's patients and the townspeople, and gets pregnant. This is a marvelous love story, and one of the best of the series. I have been reading and re-reading these books since I was a child. I own the whole set, some in first editions, some in reading copies for friends. If you have read Anne of Green Gables, you will definitely love this book. ... Read more

Product Description
Lucy Montgomery (1874 - 1942) was a Canadian author best known for her series of books beginning with Anne of Green Gables. Her warm understanding of human nature and a love of the countryside are apparent in her stories. A new Presbyterian minister with four motherless children comes to Glen St. Mary. The children, along with Anne's older ones, get into one scrape after another. Romance enters the picture when the dreamy minister meets a sweet village maiden in the children's favorite spot, Rainbow Valley. This is the sequel to Anne of Ingleside.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Magic of Rainbow Valley...
"Rainbow Valley" is the seventh novel in Lucy Maud Montgomery's superb "Anne of Green Gables" series.Red-haired orphan Anne Shirley has been married to Doctor Gilbert Blythe for fifteen wonderful years; they and their six children and unique maid of all work Susan Baker live in the house called Ingleside, in the village of Glen St. Mary on Prince Edward Island.

As the story opens, Gilbert and Anne, just returned from Europe, reassemble their family at Ingliside.Mrs. Marshall Elliot delivers the latest gossip to Anne, including the news that the preacher's manse is newly occupied by absent-minded widower Reverend John Meredith, his four children, and an aging housekeeper.

In the wooded play space they call Rainbow Valley, the adolescent Blythe and Meredith children are quick to bond and as quick to get involved in escapades together. The four Meredith children, who are raising themselves, are forever offending local sensibilities; the Blythes will try to help.

"Rainbow Valley" is a change of pace in the "Anne" series, as Anne and Gilbert step into the background to allow Montgomery to work her considerable narrative magic with the Blythe and Meredith children. The principal drama will be the effort by many hands to remarry Reverend Meredith to a suitable woman who can mother his children. In the end, the meekest Meredith child will make the quietly heroic sacrifice that saves the day.

"Rainbow Valley" is highly entertaining and highly recommended to "Anne" fans.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Rainbow Valley is the seventh book in L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables series. It could almost be a stand-alone novel as there is very little of Anne, Gilbert, or their children. If you can get past the disappointment of not seeing very much of the Blythe's then you might enjoy Rainbow Valley. The story revolves around the Meredith's, the four children of a widowed Presbyterian minister. Anne and Gilbert's children play small parts, mostly in the background of the story.

Although the Meredith children certainly can be described as unusual, I didn't find anything particularly interesting about them. I'm afraid that L.M. Montgomery simply ran out of unique characters by the seventh book. I feel let down that the series has turned so far away from Anne. It makes me wonder if Montgomery believed that our adventures end when we grow up and get married. A spirited woman like Anne would definitely continue to grow and evolve as a person.

Taken outside of the series, Rainbow Valley is a beautifully written story - with the same graceful turns of phrase as the rest of the series, and full of drama and comedy. But when judged against it's predecessors it is a disappointment - with lackluster characters and a flat plot line. Quite uninteresting.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful book
All the books by Lucy Maud Montgomery are wonderful. It was such a innocent time in history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good, wholesome reading
This novel is one of the best of the "Anne" series. The plot moves, the characters are well portrayed, and romance keeps the suspense up and the reader engrossed. It is so wonderful to read something written about the turn of the century that isn't full of the filth of so much of today's fiction.

5-0 out of 5 stars An atypical "Anne" book, but one of L.M. Montgomery's best
I really think the only reason not to find "Rainbow Valley" one of L. M. Montgomery's better novels in the Anne series is because it obviously has the least to do with Anne or her children.Once Anne finally married Gilbert in "Anne'sHouse of Dreams" (1917), Montgomery seemed to be at a loss as what to do with her delightful red-headed orphan now that she was a mother. So when this book was written in 1919 she focused on the four Meredith children who beloned to new Presbyterian minister, John Meredith, who was a widower.I can certainly see where some readers would be less than pleased with this particular direction, but the scene near the end of the novel where little Una Meredith communes with her late mother's wedding dress before going off to get her father a wife is as touching as anything Montgomery ever wrote.

To be clear, "Rainbow Valley" is the fifth of the original six Anne books written by Montgomery, which ended in 1920 with "Rilla of Ingleside."It would not be until 1936 that she would write "Anne of Windy Poplars," which became the fourth book in the series and took us back to when Anne was engaged to Gilbert and waiting for him to finish medical school. In 1939 she wrote her final novel, "Anne of Ingleside," which is the least of the Anne books, taking place before "Rainbow Valley" and engaging in some heavy handed foreshadowing as to what would happen to her characters. This 1919 book is dedicated: "To the memory of Goldwin Lapp, Robert Brookes and Morley Shier who made the supreme sacrifice that the happy valleys of their home land might be kept sacred from the ravage of the invader."So clearly Montgomery was thinking of the next book she would write, that would take place during the First World War.

At this point in time Anne Shirley has been married to Gilbert Blythe for 15 years and is now the mother of six children: James (called Jem), Walter, Nan, Diana (Di), Shirley, and Marilla (Rilla). The Mrs. and the Doctor return home to Four Winds Harbor from a trip to Europe and discover the new minister and his four children: Jerry, Faith, Una and Carl.Without a mother and a father given over to deams, the manse children tend to run a bit wild. However, it seems that when they try to do their very best, it occasions the most local gossip, and the children are worried they will cost their father his job.Of course the Meredith and Blythe children become good friends, and the manswe children have Anne's stamp of approval, which is good enough for us.Two major plots in the novel involve Mary Vance, an orphan girl who finds an unexpected home and continues to cause trouble for all concerned, and Rosemary West, a young woman who John Meredith falls for but whose sister Ellen does not want to be alone and causes romantic complications that Una needs to iron out in the end.

All in all, "Rainbow Valley" reminds me more of "The Story Girl" and "The Golden Road" than any of the other Anne books, with the Meredith children having a series of humorous misadventures. I am also impressed because as you can tell from the ending when Walter Blythe speaks of "The Piper," that Montgomery is already committed to writing about what happens to these children during World War I in her next Anne book, "Rilla of Ingleside." Even though it is atypical "Rainbow Valley" is my second favorite book in the Anne series and I am the proud owner of a first edition copy with the green book cover and the illustration by M.L. Kirk of not Anne but rather Rosemary West, captioned "Rosemary West stepped aside from teh by-path and stood in that spell-weaving place" (page 131). ... Read more

Although this book is 5 years old, it is constructed SO well and most of the material matches up-to-date books.
Why I like this book: it presents you with a condition or a group of conditions. You learn what it is, signs and symptoms (not just from nursing POV, but good medical exlanation), then follows diagnostic testing, nursing assessments, intervetions and teaching. Everything is in order.
It has many photos and other illustrations. Easy to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Romance on a Magic Island...
Lucy Maud Montgomery's 1910 novel, "Kilmeny of the Orchard", is an unusual romance, set on the author's very own magic island of imagination, Prince Edward Island, Canada.

As the story opens, young college graduate Eric Marshall agrees to substitute teach in the village of Lindsey for a friend who has taken ill.On an evening ramble, he discovers a neglected orchard, and a beautiful woman who plays the violin in a bewitching manner.

The innocent young woman, whose name is Kilmeny, has a tragic history and a stunning diability; she is unable to speak. She communicates with Eric by writing on a slate. The two become close friends.Eric is reminded of his obligations as a man by his friendly landlady Mrs. Williamson, and he elects to declare his intentions to Kilmeny's guardians, the Gordons.

Eric will face several obstacles to his love for Kilmeny: Kilmeny's protective relatives; Kilmeny herself, who believes she is unworthy of marriage; Neil Gordon, a deadly rival for Kilmeny's affections; and Eric's own skeptical father.Eric will have to prove himself worthy of Kilmeny in an exciting conclusion.

According to Montgomery biographer Elizabeth Waterston, "Kilmeny of the Orchard" is a longer version of a short story written in 1908.The novel was the third written by Montgomery following "Anne of Green Gables" and "Anne of Avonlea."It is highly recommended to fans of L.M. Montgomery as a short but entertaining example of her imaginative writing.

4-0 out of 5 stars kilmeny
lovely oldfashioned way of living wherealert morals good living joy in nature and the quirks of people and acceptedare brought to the forefront They should still be practised in this modern life because they never go out of fashion

5-0 out of 5 stars Kilmeny of the Orchard
This was great I ordered this book and received it the next week. Would highly recommend this seller.

2-0 out of 5 stars The most boring of Montgomery's books...
I love many of L.M. Montgomery's books, but this is the first time I've read one that I really didn't like. The plot was entirely predictable, the writing lifeless, the lead characters insipid. Blah. I think I'll go wash my mind out with some Anne, Emily or Valancy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ennoyable read
While this didn't pique my interest as much as Anne of Green Gables or the Blue Castle, this is a solid read, and a great short story by Ms. Montgomery. If you've enjoyed her series and stand-alone books, then you will definitely enjoy this. It's a nice, short (not overly so) love story between what seems like an unlikely couple :) ... Read more
