This popular science book shows that chemists do have a sense of humor, and this book is a celebration of the quirky side of scientific nomenclature. Here, some molecules are shown that have unusual, rude, ridiculous or downright silly names. Written in an easy-to-read style, anyone - not just scientists - can appreciate the content. 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding introduction
As someone who is getting into the e-conmerce world late in the game, I found this book a great introduction to the issues and problems businesses face in moving online. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs practical guidance entering the realm of e-commerce.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Read!
This book is an e-commerce primer. Although its material can seem dated (which happens quickly in this environment), the book is valuable for those who want a historical overview of Internet commerce and technology. Yes, e-commerce has changed so much so quickly that any analysis of Peapod, Streamline, and other e-tailers may seem naïve. But Paul May's discussion of the movement from fat to thin client architecture is interesting and relevant. (One only wishes that the WAP discussion went further!) While this book may not be for every executive or change leader, we [...] recommend it to marketing directors as a valuable bridge between business and technology. It also can benefit those who want a strong, but not dauntingly deep, technical overview.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and enjoyable read
This book is one of a series called Breakthroughs in Application Development.I found the book to be an excellent introduction to the challenges, risks and opportunities that E-commerce brings to business, as well as to our personal lives as consumers. What I particularly liked about this book was that it used both successes and failures as examples to learn from. Also, Paul May does a good job of identifying the real business drivers (not just the buzzwords) which make going "E" so important in the current age.He examines the kind of out of the box/cross-functional thinking that is needed by both business and IT to make a substantial impact on the e-commerce world.

The book also covers the applicable technology at a high level, but not before stressing the importance of a well thought out business plan before diving into incoherent forays on the web.The most startlingly obvious recommendation he made was for companies to encourage and even subsidize their employees experiences on the Internet (a la Ford Motor Company buying PC's for all their employees, allowing access to the internet from work, etc.) since that's the best way to get them e-aware, both as consumers and professionals.

I would definitely recommend this book both for business and technical people.Paul May uses humor and even sarcasm to keep the book light and engaging without skimping on content or credibility.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best E-Commerce Book this Year!
`The Business of E-Commerce' is a great introductory text for senior(technical and non-technical) management, university students andconsultants addressing the history, strategy and business models, specificapplications as well as the technology required to quickly understand whate-commerce involves.

The well-structured, lightly illustrated andreferenced chapters span:

++ getting there- about virtualization, globalization, and intellectualization aspects of business change, andexploitation through origins, recent history, interactivity, connectivityand continuity.

++ a generic business model for e-commerce- localbusiness drivers (copycat, channel development, cost reduction, and partnerinclusion), new maps (physical/informational/B2C, B2B, andcross-pollination), and role types (intermediation, disintermediation, reintermediation, and transformation agents).

++ pathfinder applicationareas- B2C retail, auctions, and advice; and B2B procurement, inventoryexchange, and real-time collaboration.

++ technology landscape- data, dynamic networks, security, payment solutions and e-commercestandards.

++ architectures for electronic commerce- logical, technical, and organizational.

++ open issues- legalities (intellectual property, responsibility and privacy, regulation and taxation), technical issues(platform risk, communication disconnect, skills), and market issues(volatility, locus, and trust).

Strengths include: the well-structured`mature' text; the useful lengthy glossary of terms; the attractive stylewith mostly complete and correct content often supported by usefulillustrative anecdotes or supporting materials; and the author's obviouscomfortability with discussing some technical aspects supporting e-commerce(1960s EDI, Java, XML, Jini etc..). Weaknesses include: gaps relating toorganizational (e-business) development lifecycle necessary to leverage thetechnology and business models; manufacturing examples with errors (not allmanufacturing processes just have discrete steps!); real-time confusion(see any control engineering text for precise & correct definitions);gap relating to object-oriented systems/ virtual organization development(briefly mentioned about 100 pages late!); better referencing andsupporting material, and need for more sidebars & illustrations, andabout 15% reduced text for same content.

This reviewer got the impressionthat detailed discussions were avoided to minimize the need for frequentupdates/ revisions. Yet perhaps such tabulated comparisons of contemporarytools for applications and organizational development, details of variousofferings from major consultancies, and discussion of web-enabled ERP, CRM,CRM, BI (and all those other software acronyms) would have added value forthe reader to better implement e-commerce solutions.

Some alternativetexts include: the weaker inspiring `Futurize Your Enterprize' by Siegel;the weaker draft `Exploring E-commerce' by Fellenstein/Wood; and Hoque's`E-enterprise' which is initially promising but ultimately unsatisfactory (too much repetition, error, and `jargonism' without support, despite somegood charts and structure, to be considered worthwhile).

Overall, auseful and entertaining read- amongst the best books (read by thisreviewer) in the last year.

4-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive introduction of E-business.
It's really a comprehensive book for novice who wants to learn the conceptof E-business from scratch. It gives reader a wide spectrum of themes onbusiness of e-commerce. Wade though it, and you will find yourself filledwith e-business wisdom. ... Read more

Product Description

The first collection of critical essays on May Swenson and her literary universe, Body My House initiates an academic conversation about an unquestionably major poet of the middle and late twentienth century. Between the 1950s and the 1980s, May Swenson produced eleven volumes of poetry, received many major awards, was elected chancellor of the Academy of American Poets, and was acclaimed by writers in virtually every school of American poetry.

Essays here address the breadth of Swenson's literary corpus and offer varied scholarly approaches to it. They reference Swenson manuscripts---poems, letters, diaries, and other prose---some of which have not been widely available before. Chapters focus on Swenson's work as a nature writer; the literary and social contexts of her writing; her national and international acclaim; her work as a translator; associations with other poets and writers (Bishop, Moore, and others); her creative process; and her profound explorations of gender and sexuality. The first full volume of scholarship on May Swenson, Body My House suggest an ambitious agenda for further work.

Contributors include Mark Doty, Gudrun Grabher, Cynthia Hogue, Suzann Juhasz, R.R. Knudson, Alicia Ostriker, Martha Nell Smith, Michael Spooner, Paul Swenson, and Kirstin Hotelling Zona.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Opening Onto May Swenson, Her Life and Work
For reasons that defy both logic and instinct the poetry of May Swenson continues to fly under the mainstream publishing radar. This compilation of essays on Swenson, published by Utah State University Press, is the first major book we have on the poet, and is obviously only a jumping-off point. A variety of points of view are given and anyone interested in Swenson's poetry will find fascinating windows on her many-sided genius. Of particular note is Swenson'scorrespondence with Bishop, eeirly similar to and echoing Bishop's previous correspondence with Marianne Moore. Swenson is shown to be one of the most acute readers of Bishop - sometimes almost too acute in her understanding of the many poetic dodges and balancing acts her older friend maintained in achieving an aesthetic response to Swenson's essentially Dionysic questioning.
Reading through each essay reveals Swenson's profound intellect, one that used an ongoing and unceasing internal discourse to create her own poetic vision, a vision imbued with complexly positive felicites, delighting the senses, even as darker thoughts jangle the mind.
Any first work on so fine a poet as Swenson is welcome; this work, with its variety of essays is especially true to its goal - a rereading and initial introduction to one of America's great poets. As the authors correctly put it, "Her work is ripe for further discovery." ... Read more

Product Description
Pope John Paul II was one of the most significant world figures in the 20th century and one of the most famous popes in the history of the Catholic church. His unprecedented willingness to travel the world and his media savvy allowed him to reach over 1 billion Catholic parishioners in over 100 countries during his long tenure as pope. He drew huge crowds of devoted followers wherever he went, and no doubt many of them will seek to remember him long after his reign has ended. The Poynter Institute has put together a full-color collection of front page newspaper stories from the day of Pope John Paul II's death in order to chronicle the historic event. The book includes approximately 150 reproductions of front pages from newspapers in all 50 states in the United States plus major newspapers from around the world. The book includes the front pages from all over the U.S. and throughout the world, presented without comment as each newspaper remembers the pope in its own way. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Touching tribute.
It is amazing that a book that simply displays the first pages of newspaper announcements of the death of a pope could prove to be so emotionally impactful.
This book reminds us that, once in a while, an individual can really matter to the whole world, and all because the whole world mattered so very much to him. An excellent idea for an effective tribute. I really enjoyed this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Professional respect by journalists
Mr. Bill Mitchell and his peers at the Poynter Institute in Florida have created a carefully designed, expertly formatted and cleanly printed book that enables the reader to grieve the loss of "a man whose impact stretched far past the walls of Vatican City" (p. x).

The April 3, 2005 front pages from newspapers around the globe are assembled here to announce the death of John Paul II. A student of journalism will notice a few patterns. First there is the front page from Krakow, Poland that just has a large photo and two words: 'Totus tuus' (p. 131). Some newpapers, such as the Plain Dealer in Cleveland, went with a large photo and a story (p. 64). Other newpaper editors chose to have a photo and text of the Pope fill 2/3 of the front page and placed unrelated stories at the bottom (Cincinnati, p. 62). Lastly, some editors allowed a small photo and small a story of the Pope to fill a tiny portion of the front page and filled the rest of the page with ads and other stories which seems distracting (New Delhi, India, p. 117).

The "Collection" proves that the majority editors chose to annnounce the death of the Pope in powerful, professional and sometimes artistic ways. The painting from the Register in Des Moines, Iowa (p. 31) alone makes the book worth its price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best overall tribute ever!
It's incredible to witness all headlines all over the world, how Pope John Paul II trascended language and geographical frontiers to be remembered as the loving "father" of the catholic church. Interesting enough, many of the headlines are from jewish, hindu, and other religion newspapers. For all people who have feelings about the death of the Pope, this is an extraordinary book.

Without entering religious fields, this graphical records from the Poynter Institute encompass important publications from all over the world, that why I called it "overall tribute" ... Read more
