5-0 out of 5 stars True to the music
Perfect transcription of the actual piano songs, and decent capture of the guitar tracks into piano music.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great guitar book. Not a piano book!!

This is a guitar tablature book as the description . BR>By the way this is an excellent book. Standard guitar tab book with excellent transcriptions of all 10 songs from the album. Additional feature the great artwork.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic transcriptions of McLachlan's "Surfacing" shine...
I own both of Sarah McLachlan's piano songbooks ("Sarah McLachlan Collection" and "Surfacing") and this is my favourite of the two. I've been playing piano for fourteen years and I've been a fan of Sarah for just as long. "Surfacing" features piano transcriptions that sound almost exactly like the CD. "Building a Mystery" captures the shimmering guitar intro and saucy feel, "I Love You" is a haunting piano solo that trails off into silence, "Sweet Surrender" was my least favourite....that haunting guitar intro just didn't cross over to piano as well. "Adia" sounds just like the recording, as does "Angel," and "Last Dance" performs beautifully (a musical saw played the melody on "Surfacing"). "Full of Grace" was featured on the "Moll Flanders" soundtrack a number of years back and is very delicate; "Witness" becomes a powerful song on piano with its striking, rhythmic bass chords that underscore the melody. "Black and White" was another song that I routinely skip over--somehow the piano just doesn't do it justice. This is the best transcription of popular music that I've ever had the pleasure to play--it is at times haunting, assertive, lovesick and playful. If you are a Sarah McLachlan fan you'll also want to check out the "Sarah McLachlan Songbook" that features songs from "Touch" and "Solace" along with "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy."

5-0 out of 5 stars Great translations of Sarah`s music!
I`m not a great pianist but I have been playing for a short while and I love Sarah`s music. I must say this book is excellent. Angel sounds amazing as well as Do What You Have To Do. The melody for Angel is pretty easy soit isnt very difficult. I Love You sounds absolutley AMAZING! Even thoughthe studio song isnt done with the piano it sounds really beautiful solo onthe piano. The best song on here is Last Dance, which is my personalfavorite. The translations are almost exactly what you hear on her albumsbut Sarah does a little improv that adds a bit more to the songs thats notin the sheet music. A must for every pianist who is a fan!Great for guitartoo. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not very impressive
I love Sarah McLachlan, but was disappointed in these arrangements. On quite a number of songs, the baseline consists of an endless succession of plodding, single-tone eighth notes, and nowhere do they ever write more than a single base note at a time; i.e., no base chords. There is also very little right hand movement beyond the melody line - no embellishments, and in many places there's nothing going on at all.Although the chords seem to be accurate, these arrangements are simplistic, lackluster, and boring.I've noticed that most of the time, piano arrangements of songs written and played on guitar tend to be less interesting, but Sarah plays piano as well as guitar, so I expected better.

Yes, it's possible to pull out the recordings and write your own arrangement, but then, I bought the music so I wouldn't have to do that!

4-0 out of 5 stars solid guitar
This book offers authentic chords which sound great.
Strongly recommended

5-0 out of 5 stars A feast for the eyes as well as the ears.......
In the "Sarah McLachlan Collection" songbook (vocal/piano/guitar), there are illustrations drawn by Sarah, hand-penned lyrics and a centrefold of concert photos that makes this a feast for the eyes as well as the ears. "Collection" covers Sarah's first three studio albums: Touch ("Vox," "Ben's Song,"), Solace ("Drawn To The Rhythm," "I Will Not Forget You," "Lost,") and Fumbling Towards Ecstasy (the title of which was taken from Wilfred Owen's poem "Dulce et Decorum est" that features the line "An ecstasy of fumbling") ("Possession," "Path of Thorns," "Wait," "Plenty," "Good Enough," "Fear," "Circle," "Ice," "Ice Cream," "Hold On," and "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy").

The arrangements are greatly simplified, especially "Possession." It should be noted that this is *NOT* the piano version of "Possession" that was a hidden track on "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy" (and also featured on the "Due South" soundtrack). This transcription is from the album version, and it is very, very basic. You will want to add your own embellishments to make it workable.

However, most of the songs closely resemble their album counterparts and are a joy to play. I love the shimmery buoyancy of "Vox," the Loreena McKennitt-like musings of "Drawn To the Rhythm," and the high-strung melancholy of "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy." This is a wonderful addition to any fan's Sarah McLachlan collection.
(Note: there is a section devoted to guitar tabs for all of you guitarists out there)

5-0 out of 5 stars Fumbling Towards Ecstacy and more!
Guitar chords & addition tab section, piano, and vocal music. Sarah's sheet music is kinda weird sometimes, but it works. All the songs look fairly easy to play (on piano), but I haven't had time to work on any from this book yet. It includes a few songs from her first 2 albums, then the entire Fumbling Towards Ecstacy album. There are also a few pages of great photos of Sarah.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful!
I personally love this book. The songs are a bit simplier than the album version, but these versions are so great. My favorite to play on the piano is Mary. I really recommend this book to anyone who loves Fumbling TowardsEctasy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sarah McLachlan - Afterglow
I loved it the instant I started playing it, what else can I say? The transcriptions are quite accurate and sound good on the piano. The vocal part requires that you listen to the CD to know what it is actually supposed to sound like on the verses, as Sarah changes them a bit. The piano part is a good mix of the original piano part plus some of the synth and guitar parts, a mix that is very pleasing to the ear. Enjoy! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not bother
Many of the facts in this book are wrong. Stay away from this poorly slapped together book as it will surely disappoint you.

1-0 out of 5 stars Oh my God - someone write a real biography please !!!
I bought this book and was mortified.

Really mortified.

The author may be a renowned poet but the subject of the book does not bear any relation to the title.

I am an Australian and discovered the music of Sarah after "Surfacing" was released. I then bought every other album, joined Murmurs and also got the special releases. I actually got to see Sarah in concert in Sydney in 2004 when she was promoting "Afterglow".

I am not one of the "Sarahmaniacs" so often quoted in other reviews-I am affected by her voice and the lyrics. There are other female artists who also affect me this way but none of them has had such dross written about them. This unauthorised biography is a credit to no-one.

Do not buy it even if it is supposed to be updated. Use your favourite web search engine and learn more-for very little cost.

Note : Amazon should allow a "zero star" rating.

1-0 out of 5 stars If you want to read about Sarah, don't buy this book.
I really don't care how much judith fitzgerald thinks she knows about the music "biz." And I really got tired of her trying to impress the readers with her vocabulary. If I wanted to read about her, I would have bought her own autobiography (please tell me there isn't one.)

No...I wanted to read about Sarah. That's why I bought the book in the first place. It was a mistake.

1-0 out of 5 stars Utter Crap
This book is the biggest piece of crap I've ever read - and I read a lot!How it ever got published is the real mystery!Don't waste your time on it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Manifesto of bias
As a owner of one of the internet's most well respected Sarah McLachlan websites as well as an expert in Sarah McLachlan Biography, I find this book insulting. Building a Mystery reads like a schizophrenic patient's transcript strife with vague references, endless garble, and little substance. Having read the book front to back, I found little about 'Sarah McLachlan' and mostly what seemed to be an ongoing, unguided defamation. Not only does the author refuse to latch onto a journalistic perspective with direction and commentry from the people who matter most to the heart of the person and concept of 'Sarah McLachlan', she becomes attached to the alleged stalker which took his like soon after a legal battle with Mclachlan. I could not identify with her perspective or logic and found the book uncomfortable to read. It is no wonder Sarah McLachlan's family and record company wanted nothing to do with the author or this book. I strongly recommend against wasting your money. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing
Unfortunately, this book does not do justice to Sarah McLachlan's music. I love her music but this book was really disappointing. You can barely recognize any of the songs when you play from this book. In my opinion, the arrangements are very poor. Granted this is easy piano, but I have played other similar books and they sound much better. I highly recommend NOT to buy this book. As a matter of fact, I will be more than happy to send you my copy. I rated this book with two stars because of the nice cover. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review
Ravenous Sarah McLachlan fans will be happily sated by thissophisticated cookbook-cum-fan letter. With Plenty: A Collection ofSarah McLachlan's Favourite Recipes, the Canadian musician revealsthe inventive ways she copes with touring hardships: by taking refugein Full of Grace Soufflé, Sweet Surrender Lobster, andGrandma's Upside-Down Apple Tart, to name just a few.

To make this possible, McLachlan hired a professional chef to cook forher band and crew while on tour--Jaime Laurita, trained at theCulinary Institute of America. In collaboration, McLachlan and Lauritashare meat-free recipes that borrow from Thai, Mediterranean, Italian, and Japanese cookery--all heavy on veggies and fish. Organized neatlyinto appetizers, entrées, and desserts and beverages, theserecipes are suitable for courageous novice cooks and home chefsalike. The appealing presentation includes color photographs of theexotic ingredients, such as galangal and gooseberry, and shots ofcreative serving suggestions.

Generous additions of material from McLachlan take this book beyondthe mere cookbook classification. While waiting for the vinegar toreduce when making Penne Pasta in Balsamic Cream, Sarahphiles canindulge in photographer Kharen Hill's color and black-and-whiteconcert shots, candid everyday photos of tour and home life, andMcLachlan's own commentary on almost every luscious dish. She has thisto say of Writer's Block Oatmeal-Raisin Cookies: "When trying to writesongs after experiencing writer's block, one sure-fire remedy isbaking cookies. It's easy and they always turn out great. I can't sayit makes the songs come any easier, but it does cheer me up!" 4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable
I really enjoyed this book. I got it as a fan of Sarah's and looking for some interesting recipes and this book was awesome. I have yet to make most of the recipes in the book, but have truly enjoyed those I have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Plenty for everyone!
this cookbook is great!for one thing, i love sarah's music, so it was interesting to see this different side of her.for another thing, the recipes really are great!there is definitely something for everyone in here, fromthe appetizers,to the entrees to the desserts.out of print?i think it's time to send this one back to the presses so everyone can try it!

5-0 out of 5 stars yummy!
After eating a meal prepared by Jaime, Sarah's chef, i knew i HAD to go buy this book!He assured me that even an inexperienced cook such as myself would find it easy to follow~he was right! The food is delicious and the pictures are beautiful.Easy to follow with accessible ingredients and worth the effort of cooking at home. This is the first cookbook i've purchased in 4 years and it is well worth it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great selection of recipes
Even if you're not a huge Sarah McLachlan fan, I'd still recommend this book! Sarah and her tour chef have created a lovely collection of recipes that are fun to make and delicious to eat. The book itself is beautiful and that is worth the price alone!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fine food, workable recipes
I purchased this cookbook because I cook and because there is a major Sarah McLachlan fan in my house.Okay, I like her, too.Anyway, the cook here is very happy with this book which relies on easy to prepare Mediterranean style recipes. The recipes are courtesy of the chef who catered Sarah's band on the Lilith Fair tour out of a tiny mobile kitchen. If he can do it, so can those of us with real kitchens. Many recipes are vegetarian with the occasional dairy or fish ingredient. Many are also low-fat.All are gorgeous, satisfying and should suit most tastes. I am envious of the fact that Sarah was backstage eating this great food while I was in the audience, restricted from 3 p.m. until midnight to eating what was sold "in the venue."Note to future festival organizers:some of us don't do fries, nachos with orange cheese, hotdogs and funnel cakes (I attended Lilith in central Pennsylvania). Some of us like vegetables, just like Sarah. ... Read more

Excerpt: Sarah Ann McLachlan, OC, OBC (born January 28, 1968)) is a Canadian musician, singer and songwriter. Known for her emotional ballads and mezzo-soprano vocal range, since of 2006, she has sold over 40 million albums worldwide. McLachlan's best-selling album to date is Surfacing, for which she won two Grammy Awards (out of four nominations) and four Juno Awards. In addition to her personal artistic efforts, she founded the Lilith Fair tour, which showcased female musicians. The Lilith Fair concert tours took place from 1997 to 1999, and will resume beginning in the summer of 2010. Sarah McLachlan was born on January 28, 1968), and adopted in Halifax, Nova Scotia. As a child, she took voice lessons, along with studies in classical piano and guitar. When she was 17 years old and still a student at Queen Elizabeth High School, she fronted a short-lived rock band called The October Game. One of the band's songs, "Grind", credited as a group composition, can be found on the independent Flamingo Records release Out of the Fog and the CD Out of the Fog Too. It has yet to be released elsewhere. Her high school yearbook predicted that she was "destined to become a famous rock star." Following The October Game's first concert at Dalhousie University opening for Moev, McLachlan was offered a recording contract with Vancouver-based independent record label Nettwerk by Moev's Mark Jowett. McLachlan's parents insisted she finish high school and complete one year of studies at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design before moving to Vancouver and embarking on a new life as a recording artist, and McLachlan finally signed to Nettwerk two years later before having written a single son...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=149077 ...
