Product Description
Ladies and gentlemen, girls and boys, prepare yourself for the next big thing in publishing – Rick Mercer Report: The Book.

After a decade-long absence from our book stores, Canada’s preeminent satirist returns with a new collection of rants, writings, and comic encounters with the great and good of politics, showbiz, and literature. (Yes, relive Pierre Berton offering advice on rolling a joint, and Margaret Atwood showing off her hockey skills as a goalie.) Rick, a tremendous writing talent as well as a verbal one, has selected the best of his rants from the first four seasons of RMR, sprinkled in choice moments from his interviews, added a generous helping of other material that has never been broadcast, and arranged the whole into revealing themes and groupings with all-new introductions, reflections, and updates. Who knew that Stephen Harper was quite so preoccupied with gay sex? That Paul Martin could be so forgetful? That politicians could be so sleazy? Well, no doubt most of us did — but it’s wonderful to have it pointed out again by this brilliantly funny and charismatic talent. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars RMR - Always Amusing
Rick is well-known in Canada as one of the founding members of the irreverent comedy troupe "This Hour has Twenty Minutes". Broadcast on CBC-TV weekly, 22Minutes has developed a loyal following and is one of CBC's most popular shows. A popular segment was Rick's irregular send-up of American people, politics and mores"Talking to Americans", doing interviews with unsuspecting passers-by on the streets of the US. His subsequent comedy special, aptly titled "Talking to Americans", was the highest rated comedy program on CBC.

Rick left THTM a few seasons ago, to focus on his own weekly comedy show, "The Rick Mercer Report", to write, and to spearhead SpreadTheNet, a fundraising initiative to distribute mosquito-resistent bed nets in malaria-infected Africa. One of the recurring segments on RMR is Rick's weekly "rant", a 1- to 2-minute monologue usually filmed on the streets of Halifax.

Rick's new book("The Book") is a selection of the best rants, combined with other writings and observations. The book is funny. While reading it, I was often reminded of watching the same rant on the show. I could almost hear Rick's delivery, when I wasn't laughing out loud.

For those who wish to 'sample the wares' so to speak, many of the Rick's rants (and other bits) are archived on the CBC website. You can watch them and get a taste for Rick's satirical point of view. Here's a link to one dating from 2004 concerning GWB and WMD:

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the worst text book I have ever used
If you are looking for a resource to help you learn object oriented c++ on your own, STAY AWAY FROM THIS BOOK!Author uses interchangeable terms for particular items without first telling you the terms are interchangeable which leaves you wondering weather you have lost your mind.Author constantly references things in chapters further ahead or explains "how" to do something AFTER a project is assigned requiring knowledge of the particular skill that has not been shared. If it were not for a friend (programmer by trade) pointing out the inconsistencies and out of order structure of this book I would never have made any progress in learning object oriented C++ using this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor book!
This book is terrible in quite a few ways. I know C and C++ (ANSI/ISO C89, C++98) rather well, and this book (which is intended as an introductory read) confused me! I was forced to use this book as my only tutorial/reference/hope in a C++ course I took when I attended college.

Mr. Mercer's coding style is ancient and belongs next to the first source release of the *NIX game Rogue. His code is more of an aesthetic problem (for me at least) than anything else though.

The orange-highlighted sections(which there are a profound amount of) are an eyesore.

If your professor/instructor pushes this bland book on you, take the course somewhere else where the department has a pinch of better taste.

If this is a personal read, it's always best to start with Stroustrup, and if needed, a beginning book along the lines of possibly Learn in 21 Days series.

1-0 out of 5 stars WORST BOOK ON THE PLANET.
I picked up this book because it was recommened by a friend.
A friend who used this text book in his class, it makes no
sense whatsoever, Rick Mercer expects a begining programmer
to have pre-devolped computer skills before you pick this book
up. He does a poor job explaining teh basics before his problem
examples appear. And they hardly are about the same chapter just covered. I give this book an honest dis-approval.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I had struggled to wade through a seven-volume set on C++ by a different author, and gave up.I found this book to be clear, with helpful and relevant assignments throughout. The problems help solidify the concepts, thus ensuring your overall comprehension.I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory C++ text
I used this book for my Computer Science I course and it was an excellenttextbook. All of the concepts are presented in a clear, concise manner andadequate problems (and solutions) are supplied. This book is the besttextbook I have used for any course and it an excellent text for anyonelearning C++, especially without any background. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars you make me proud to be canadian, rick...
hands down one of the greatest books ever written about canadian politics. rick mercer's incredible wit and vast political understanding really make it just so laugh-out-loud funny. i love his rants. i'm glad he's continued on with them for his new show 'monday report'. hopefully there will be another book on those as well! these are exciting times, and for rick it's like the playoff season that just won't quit.

read this book, it's good for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the read!
This book is a reprise of Mr. Mercer's "rants" on "This Hour Has 22 Minutes".For those of you who lack the good fortune to have access to the show, I highly recommend this book. For those of you who are fans of the show, this book should be added to your collection.

"Streeters" is a must-have for anyone with anappreciation of political humour, be it Canadian or otherwise.A mandatoryitem for anyone seeking to understand the Canadian psyche, this book getsthe point across via a unique combination of keen political insight and anextraordinary command of common Canadian prose.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not such a hot C++ textbook. Poor index.
This book just doesn't do the job.It has a poor index, which cripplesany textbook. Many facets of C++ are not covered well or not covered atall in the book. The layout and presentation are poor. There are farbetter C++ books available.

4-0 out of 5 stars good text book
This is a very good text for teaching C++ to abeginning class. It jumps right into C++ and objects, with a strong push towards code reuse. The only complaint about this text is that it is getting a bit dated in its style of C++ and some of the newer advanced concepts(stl, namespaces...)are not covered at all. Also very little C is used or discussed, which is fine for a class where a professor can discuss these issues but for someone on their own they may want to choose another book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Smells like ink, but it does the job.
Got the book right away.Smells like heavy ink, but still looks good. Compared it with the hardback version, and its the exact same.If you have to get the book for a class, this is definitely the way to go.

4-0 out of 5 stars Shipped Fast - Needed Note that Disk was Missing
I received the book very quickly thank you very much! This book was listed as new, but was missing the disk that should have come with it. I tried to contact the seller prior to purchasing the book, but did not receive a response. I contacted the seller after receiving the book, and was told it was not known that the book came with a disk. Otherwise great!

4-0 out of 5 stars slightly dated version of java
Written in 2002, Mercer's book teaches Java from scratch. A well done pedagogy. That gets across the ideas in object oriented programming, as well as specific fluency in Java. The general purpose lessons and ideas in OO are timeless. And largely transportable to any other OO language like C# or C++.

The text also has a short history of how OO programming arose. Showing the earlier structured or procedural programming approach, as exemplified by Fortran or Pascal.

The coding examples are also a good introduction to writing graphical programs. Where the code often waits for user commands. With the associated ideas of registering callbacks (called listeners in Java) and of simple multithreading.

The biggest problem is that the Java is somewhat dated. Java has been through 2 major revisions since 2002. However, those tended to expand the set of classes in the standard distribution. Newer Javas are a superset of the Java treated in the book. ... Read more

Product Description
Rick Mercer Report: The Book was the publishing phenom of 2007, hogging the top of the bestseller lists. Prime ministers’ memoirs came and went, and RMR outstayed them all. And now it’s back — bigger and better and funnier than ever.

Rick Mercer Report: The Paperback Book is an updated, expanded remix of its bestselling predecessor, containing 10,000 words of new material from the show’s fifth season.

Rick’s celebrated rants are some of the sharpest political commentary to be found anywhere in the country’s media, and certainly the funniest. They are featured here, along with other moments from the show — including encounters with Conrad Black, Jean Chrétien, and Anne Murray — and many additional pieces, some of which first appeared on his website. Because when he’s not jumping into a lake with David Suzuki or Bob Rae, or helping the leader of the Green Party kill a tree, Rick Mercer likes to relax by blogging. From Kabul, say. Or the bearpit of a leadership convention.

Rick Mercer Report: The Paperback Book will help you make sense of five extraordinary years in the life of Canada — or at least laugh despite them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Witty political commentary
Rick Mercer is a well-known Canadian comedian, political satirist and news junkie, having co-created and performed on "This Hour Has 22 Minutes" as well as the eponymous "The Rick Mercer Report."

One feature of both shows are his 3-4 minute one-camera rants against the Canadian government and parliamentary system. "Rick Mercer Report: The Book" contains a selection of these rants, as well as excerpts from his interviews with politicians. Short comments are also included to tie it all together.

Recommended for fans of the RMR, as well those interested in sharp, witty political commentary.

Excerpt: Richard Vincent "Rick" Mercer (born October 17, 1969 in St. John's, Newfoundland) is a Canadian comedian, television personality, political satirist, and a blogger. Mercer first came to national attention in 1990, when he premiered his one man show Show Me the Button, I'll Push It, or Charles Lynch Must Die at the Great Canadian Theatre Company in Ottawa. A pointed, satirical political commentary on Canadian life after Meech Lake, Show Me the Button made Mercer a national star as he toured the show across Canada. Mercer came to greater attention for his role in the satirical news show This Hour Has 22 Minutes, and his spinoff special Talking To Americans was the highest-rated comedy special in the history of CBC Television, with 2.7 million viewers. In 1992, he created and performed his second show, I've Killed Before, I'll Kill Again, which was also a popular touring show. Also in that year, he began to work with former CODCO members Cathy Jones, Mary Walsh, and with fellow Newfoundlander Greg Thomey, to create a new television series for CBC Television which became This Hour Has 22 Minutes. In the first eight seasons of 22 Minutes, Mercer provided some of the show's signature moments, including an Internet petition (on the 22 Minutes website) to force Canadian Alliance leader Stockwell Day to change his first name to Doris. Mercer's cleverly scripted two-minute "rants," in which he would speak directly to the camera about a current political issue, quickly became the show's signature segment. In 1998, he published a book, Streeters, which compiled many of his most famous 22 Minutes rants. It quickly became a national bestsel...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=351778 ... Read more
