Excerpt: The Edinburgh Festival Fringe (The Fringe) is the worlds largest arts festival. Established in 1947 as an alternative to the Edinburgh International Festival, it takes place in Scotland's capital during three weeks every August alongside several other arts and cultural festivals, collectively known as the Edinburgh Festival, of which the Fringe is by far the largest. The Fringe mostly attracts events from the performing arts, particularly theatre and (the big growth area in recent years) comedy, although dance and music also figure significantly: in 2009 35% of shows were comedy and 28% were theatre. Theatre events can range from the classics of ancient Greece, William Shakespeare and Samuel Beckett, through to new works, and in 2009 37% of shows were world premieres. However, there is no selection committee to approve the entries it is an unjuried festival so any type of event is possible: the Fringe often showcases experimental works which might not be admitted to a more formal festival. In addition to ticketed events (included in the programme), there is an ongoing street fair, particularly on the Royal Mile. The organisers are the Festival Fringe Society: they publish the programme, sell tickets and offer advice to performers from the Fringe office on the Royal Mile. By way of scale, Fringe 2009 sold 1,859,235 tickets for 34,265 performances of 2,098 shows in 265 venues, over 25 days, for an average of over 74,000 admissions and 1,300 performances per day. Product Description
Since the start of the century, every important political meeting, every sporting fixture and every dustman's strike has been captured on camera. Many photographs have been taken to record these events, but in presenting them as true accounts, they haven't been very funny. Paul Merton aims to rectify this by subjecting photographs from the great moments of our time to his own interpretation of events. ... Read more

Chapters: Paul Merton, Robert Rankin, Janet Street-Porter, Toni Halliday, Anastasia Robinson. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 40. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Paul Merton (born Paul James Martin; 9 July 1957) is an English comedian, writer and actor. Known for his improvisation skill, his humour is rooted in deadpan, surreal and sometimes dark comedy. Considered by a number of critics, fellow comedians and members of the public to be among Britain's greatest comedians, he is well known for his regular appearances as a team captain on the popular BBC panel game Have I Got News for You, as a regular panellist on Radio 4's Just a Minute and as one of Comedy Store's Comedy Store Players. Merton was born on 9 July 1957 in Parsons Green, London to an English father (a train driver on the London Underground) and an Irish mother. When his mother returned to work as a nurse, Merton and his younger sister were looked after by their grandfather, who lived with them in their council flat. He failed his eleven plus, and famously received an unclassified grade for metalwork at CSE before moving on to Wimbledon College, a Jesuit-run secondary school that had just become a comprehensive. His experience of victimisation there as a working-class boy became a frequent subject of his comedy. After leaving school, Merton worked at the Tooting Employment Office for three years. Merton married the actress Caroline Quentin in 1990, but they divorced in 1998. Merton subsequently had a relationship with producer and actress Sarah Parkinson; they were married unofficially in a service in the Maldives in 2000. They were officially married three months before her death from breast cancer on 23 September 2003. He married fellow improviser Suki Webster in 2009, and lives in Suffolk. Merton has suffered from...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=151389 ... Read more

Excerpt: The Jam were an English punk rock/mod revival band active during the late 1970s and early 1980s. While they shared the "angry young men" outlook and fast tempos of their punk rock contemporaries, The Jam wore neatly tailored suits rather than ripped clothes, and they incorporated a number of mainstream 1960s rock influences rather than rejecting them, placing The Jam at the forefront of the mod revival movement. They had 18 consecutive Top 40 singles in the United Kingdom, from their debut in 1977 to their breakup in 1982, including four number one hits. As of 2007, "That's Entertainment" and "Just Who Is the 5 O'Clock Hero?" remained the best-selling import singles of all time in the UK. They released one live album and six studio albums, the last of which, The Gift, hit number one on the UK album charts. When the group split up, their first 15 singles were re-released and all placed within the top 100. The band drew upon a variety of stylistic influences over the course of their career, including 1960s beat music, soul, rhythm and blues and psychedelic rock, as well as 1970s punk and new wave. The trio was known for its melodic pop songs, its distinctly English flavour and its mod image. The band launched the career of Paul Wel...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=150037 ... Read more

In this sequel to Worry Warts and Misery Guts, Keith Shipley is still trying to bring happiness to his now-separated parents, this time by finding each of them a new partner. “A punchy narrative, droll characters and original plot make this a real page-turner.”-Publishers Weekly. “The emotional currents run true and the author’s adroit mix of humor and desperation make Keith a hero to cheer for.”-The Bulletin ...
