Product Description

ART HISTORY provides the reader with the most student-friendly, contextual, and inclusive art history survey on the market.  These hallmarks make ART HISTORY the choice for reader who seeks to actively engage in the study of art.

This new edition of ART HISTORY is the result of a happy and productive collaboration between two scholar-teachers (Marilyn Stokstad and Michael Cothren) who share a common vision that survey courses on the history of art should be filled with as much enjoyment as erudition, and that they should foster an enthusiastic, as well as an educated, public for the visual arts.

Like its predecessors, this new edition seeks to balance formal and iconographic analysis with contextual art history in order to craft interpretations that will engage a diverse student population.  Throughout the text, the visual arts are treated as part of a larger world, in which geography, politics, religion, economics, philosophy, social life, and the other fine arts are related components of a vibrant and cultural landscape.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great price for a much needed book
Book is in fairly good condition as described.Great price for an Art book that I would have had to pay much more for brand new.

4-0 out of 5 stars Art History
This textbook came in excellent condition. Although, the class that it is used for may seem to be boring for anyone not going for an Art Major. Be weary while making your choices for classes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweeping introduction to art history--Renaissance to present
My son's textbook turns out to be a pleasure to me! This is Volume Two of a two volume set on art history. It covers the period from early Renaissance art in Europe to the post-1945 international avant-garde. In between is art from Europe and other parts of the world, including India, China, Japan, the Americas, the Pacific cultures, and Africa. The Introduction places the time frame in this book in context.

The book begins with such architectural gems as the Church of Saint-Maclou in Rouen, van Eyck's art, tapestry, frescoes, the Dome of the Florence Cathedral, Donatello's sculpture, and so on. Fast forward to the avant-garde. Anselm Kiefer's painting, "Heath of the Brandenberg March," is very telling to me.

All in all, a nice tour of art in all its forms and in different regions of the world from the Renaissance to the present. . . . ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Marilyn: March 1955
This is one of the most unique and missed books during Marilyn Monroe's so-called, "New York" Period. A interesting period in Monroe's life that immediately followed her divorce from her then husband Joe DiMaggio, and her inception as a student in the "Lee Strasberg" "Actors' School". The reader and fan will appreciate the photos of Marilyn when she appeared for the Premiere of "Tennessee Williams'" Play, "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof". There are also "behind the scene" photos of Marilyn preparing for her grand entrance into the Madison Square Garden Arena on a pink elephant, to benefit a children's charity by Mike Todd. Truly, very unique and beautiful photos of the late screen goddess, which I for one will maintain in my Monroe collection for many years to come. A very beautifully put-together collection of photographer "Ed Feingersh's" photo memories of Marilyn Monroe during the early spring of 1955. Photos which were stored-away for over 40 + years and were discovered by accident. This is a truly 'must-have" for the "Monroe Afficionado"! ... Read more

Product Description
Michael Ray Charles is a painter whose carefully crafted and faux-aged canvases and works on paper draw attention to race relations historically and in contemporary society. Borrowing pop culture images of characters such as Sambo, Buckwheat, and Aunt Jemima, Charles uses them ironically to comment on racial issues. His concerns range from how tobacco and liquor companies target marketing to minorities to the depiction of African Americans in the entertainment and sports industries to concepts of all-American (i.e., white) beauty. This book is the catalog of the first major solo exhibition of Charles' work, staged by Blaffer Gallery, the Art Museum of the University of Houston. It contains a broad range of color images of paintings and works on paper. In addition to the catalog entries, the book contains an interview between exhibit curator Don Bacigalupi, catalog essayist Marilyn Kern-Foxworth, and artist Michael Ray Charles, in which the artist discusses and interprets his work. An essay by writer and cultural historian Marilyn Kern-Foxworth situates Charles' work within contemporary African American culture. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional. Compelling. Heartbreaking. Angry. And great.
I first came across Michael Ray Charles on a documentary about contemporary art (Art:21) and then again in a documentary series called Art City. Of all the artists -- many far better known than Charles -- he was, for me, the most notable. He was a young (30ish) black man, a family man living in a suburb, creating (inventing) these provocative and undeniably powerful and thought-provoking images that at once spoke to the history and horrors of racism in America, and reclaimed the power and moral sense. I purchased this "book" because I collect art books and because I so liked his art and his personality as it was conveyed in the documentaries. I never imagined when I ordered it, that I would be quite this pleased. The "book" is really two books, one a standard-sized catalogue featuring an illuminating interview and analysis of his work. Additionally, there is an oversized heavy-weight periodical (the actual catalogue featuring images) reminiscent of the old Interview magazine. Almost every page is essentially a small poster of one of Charles' works, and there are several cut-outs (dye-cuts), not to mention the inclusion of a Lincoln-head penny pasted on the back, which is a staple from his paintings. The "book" is a work of art unto itself, managing to be at once modern/contemporary and primitive (it actually comes in an oversized white jiffy bag, with an image on the front and sewn shut) and, in my estimation, is highly collectible -- not to mention just a ridiculous amount of fun. There is something to discover on every page (maybe every inch of every page). This might be the best art book I have ever purchased. If I could give this book 10 stars, I would. Michael Ray Charles is an important American artist. Very compelling. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Fattest, Tallest, Biggest Snowman Ever
ISBN 0590972847 - This series attempts to make math fun, and for the target audience (ages 6-8 in this case), maybe they'll succeed.

Jeff wants to be the best - at almost anything! His friends are better at baseball, sledding, leaf raking... and he's determined to come up with something he can win. When he decides to make the biggest snowman ever, he and Maria each make one and then measure them to see whose is bigger.

I'm all for anything that even tries to make math more fun for kids, so the 5 stars is more for that than for the content, which is just okay. The illustrations are bright and colorful and the activities pages at the back of the book are full of fun stuff that all relates to using math. Not bad at all - for a book about math!

4-0 out of 5 stars An impressive little reference guide to Marilyn's films
The Complete Films of Marilyn Monroe is an excellent resource for those fascinated by Marilyn and her movies. It is introduced with a copy of the touching tribute Lee Strasberg delivered at Marilyn's funeral, which in turn is followed by two high-quality essays. In "One American Woman: A Speculation Upon Disbelief," Mark Harris takes a look at the course of Marilyn's life, and then Michael Conway delivers a summation of Marilyn's film career in a section dubbed "Marilyn and Hollywood."After this auspicious and respectful beginning, authors Michael Conway and Mark Ricci go about providing basic information on all of Marilyn's films in chronological order. For the most part, these descriptions are of a highly formulaic type, listing the cast and film credits alongside a synopsis of the plot, accompanied by select comments from professional reviewers of the time.Little detail about the making of each film is provided, but a number of black and white pictures from each production help the reader get a sense of perspective on the evolution of Marilyn's career.

The films Marilyn made in and after 1953, the year in which she became an undeniable star, remain pretty familiar to this day: films such as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The Seven Year Itch, Bus Stop, Some Like It Hot, The Prince and the Showgirl, and The Misfits. For most people, far less is known about Marilyn's early films, and it is here that this particular book serves its greatest purpose. Here you will find basic information on largely forgotten films from the early 1950s featuring Marilyn in the smallest of roles, films such as Dangerous Years, Ladies of the Chorus, A Ticket to Tomahawk, The Fireball, Right Cross, and Hometown Story. Those unfamiliar with the truly transformative period of Marilyn's career from bit player to star-in-waiting will want to check out the sections on films such as As Young as You Feel, Love Nest, Let's Make it Legal, and Don't Bother to Knock. The importance of Marilyn's small but visible roles in such classics as The Asphalt Jungle, Clash By Night, and All About Eve are also alluded to in these pages.

From Marilyn's first part in the film Scudda Hoo! Scudda Hay! (a part that wound up on the cutting room floor) to her final completed film The Misfits and an aborted new project called Something's Got to Give, the authors trace Marilyn's cinematic evolution from a lovely young woman wanting to be an actress to a true goddess of the silver screen.

4-0 out of 5 stars straight forward and very organized
This is a must have book for every Marilyn Monroe fan because it goes through in chronological order of Marilyn's films. It shows what critics thought of the films in the years that they came out, the songs thatMarilyn sings or dances to. Along with an extensive review of each film'splot, climax,a nd characters. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Only good as kindling
This has to be the biggest piece of garbage "study guide" that has ever been authored.Rife with errors and incorrect "answers", and teaming with simple minded arrogance found in the back of book under "solutions" show a fundamental knowledge gap between the subject and the author(s).Simple arithmetic and logical problems are contained throughout the text, including questions that cannot be reasoned out even when you have the "solution".This book will break your brain into thinking in functionally retarded state as you grasp at straws to determine how they got yet ANOTHER problem/solution TOTALLY WRONG.BUYER BEWARE!

[...] If you need to wipe, there are surely books Amazon sells with a higher thread count.. I can't even recommend it for that.Worse than a bad prep book, it's a "How to do it wrong and look like a moron in front of friends and colleagues" book.At that sole and only task, it excels.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too many errors
This book would be good if it was more carefully edited before it went to press. It covers a lot of material, and having four practice tests would be awesome if they weren't filled with typos.

Question 6 of practice test 1, section 2 is supposed to have a greater than inequality but they left the latter half of the equation out of the question, leaving you unable to complete the problem as written.

Question 16 of the same has an answer of -10 < x < 8, and it even explains it to you in the detailed answer key, yet it also tells you that the answer is letter C, -10 < x < -2. The correct answer is letter A.

I got this book for the practice tests, and this first math section is as far as I got before I had to log on Amazon and review it. It's that bad.

Avoid this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Source of frustration
My daughter, in trying to increase her SAT math score, became extremely discouraged as we figured out that there were incorrect problems in the first math test! Now that we cannot trust the book, we will look for practice tests elsewhere.

1-0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware this book has errors!
This book was rushed too print too quickly. Purchased this latest version for my daughter.Very disappointed to find two math errors errors in the first section alone. In fact the very first math problem (a very simple problem) is incorrect. Given this is the first math section how many more errors are there? My daughter doesn't trust the answers which defeats the purpose of the book. Details below.

Math Section 2

Problem 1No correct answer listed for f(x) =5x^2-3x where x=3.The answer key says the answer is 18!

Problem 16asks for the percentage change in the area of one side of a cube. However the solution solves for the percentage change of a length of a cube. ... Read more

Product Description
A pair of insiders and a host of corporate directors reveal the all-too-human failings that lead to corporate mismanagement and malfeasance. Seymann and Rosenbaum argue that the corporate meltdowns of 2002 resulted more from a lack of director focus than a lack of rules, and they come up with commonsense solutions that can be implemented immediately. In Plain English, they dissect the corporate practices that defy logic, the questions that are never asked or answered, and the hidden traps that snare so many corporate boards. The Governance Game is required reading for CEOs and directors, for investors and consumers, and for anyone who wants to understand what went wrong with corporate America - and how to fix it. ...
