Product Description

An exceptional resource, this comprehensive reader brings together primary and secondary documents related to efforts to redress historical wrongs against African Americans. These varied efforts are often grouped together under the rubric “reparations movement,” and they are united in their goal of “repairing” the injustices that have followed from the long history of slavery and Jim Crow. Yet, as this collection reveals, there is a broad range of opinions as to the form that repair might take. Some advocates of redress call for apologies; others for official acknowledgment of wrongdoing; and still others for more tangible reparations: monetary compensation, government investment in disenfranchised communities, the restitution of lost property and rights, and repatriation.

Written by activists and scholars of law, political science, African American studies, philosophy, economics, and history, the twenty-six essays include both previously published articles and pieces written specifically for this volume. Essays theorize the historical and legal bases of claims for redress; examine the history, strengths, and limitations of the reparations movement; and explore its relation to human rights and social justice movements in the United States and abroad. Other essays evaluate the movement’s primary strategies: legislation, litigation, and mobilization. While all of the contributors support the campaign for redress in one way or another, some of them engage with arguments against reparations.

Among the fifty-three primary documents included in the volume are federal, state, and municipal acts and resolutions; declarations and statements from organizations including the Black Panther Party and the NAACP; legal briefs and opinions; and findings and directives related to the provision of redress, from the Oklahoma Commission to Study the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921 to the mandate for the Greensboro Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Redress for Historical Injustices in the United States is a thorough assessment of the past, present, and future of the modern reparations movement.

Product Description

ART HISTORY provides students with the most student-friendly, contextual, and inclusive art history survey text on the market.  These hallmarks make ART HISTORY the choice for instructors who seek to actively engage their students in the study of art.

This new edition of ART HISTORY is the result of a happy and productive collaboration between two scholar-teachers (Marilyn Stokstad and Michael Cothren) who share a common vision that survey courses on the history of art should be filled with as much enjoyment as erudition, and that they should foster an enthusiastic, as well as an educated, public for the visual arts.

Like its predecessors, this new edition seeks to balance formal and iconographic analysis with contextual art history in order to craft interpretations that will engage a diverse student population.  Throughout the text, the visual arts are treated as part of a larger world, in which geography, politics, religion, economics, philosophy, social life, and the other fine arts are related components of a vibrant and cultural landscape.

Art History Portable Edition offers exactly the same content as Art History, Fourth Edition but in smaller individual booklets for maximum student portability.  The combined six segment set consists of four booklets that correspond to major periods in Western art and two that cover global art.  Each book is available individually, making them ideal for courses focused on individual periods.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best western I've ever read.
This book is a well written, well researched story about a Texas Ranger and his family during the Civil War and post Civil War Texas. From first page to last, I couldn't put "Call To Glory, The Life and Times of a Texas Ranger" down and recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading western and Civil War stories. The realistic dialogue brings the characters to life and takes the reader back to an exciting era in American History.

5-0 out of 5 stars There are no punches pulled.
Reading "Call To Glory" must be done slowly and deliberately to feel the full impact of the story. I read the story slowly so that I could absorb and truly feel the emotions felt by the main characters in the story.

There are no punches pulled. It is very graphic in the description of the cruelness in fighting a war or Indians, and how men are reduced to the level of animal cunning in an effort to survive.

The sadness and loneliness felt by the women left behind compounded the problems for the men who left for war or Ranger duty. The women were struggling to operate a farm and care for a family while the men struggled to survive the daily challenges with the constant worry of the welfare of the family back home.

The authors brought out the qualities and strong fibers of the main characters which helped them endure the calamities of life and setting a gauge for others to follow.

"Call To Glory" should be made into a movie as it ranks in quality with "Gone With The Wind" and "Lonesome Dove."

5-0 out of 5 stars Great western!
This is one of the best action adventure books I have ever read. The story takes off from page one and the action never stops. I think the Texas Rangers are great.

5-0 out of 5 stars An emphatic, gripping historical fiction novel
Call To Glory: The Life And Times Of A Texas Ranger collaborative written by Michael and Marilyn Gilhuly is an emphatic, gripping historical fiction novel of bravery, heroism, sacrifice, and a proud way of life. Product Description
Virginia Woolf is a literary icon to whom all contemporary writers are indebted. Her themes reflect the same concerns found in today’s modern novels and essays. In her time, Woolf was a feminist, a socialist, a pacifist and a philosophical thinker, who pioneered the literary device known as ‘stream of consciousness’, a technique which reveals the lives of the characters through their thoughts and associations. All this takes time and the passage of time in Cunningham’s novel is a key to Virginia Woolf herself.Bookclub-in-a-Box guides the reader through the stories of Cunningham’s three women, one of whom is a fictional Virginia Woolf, helping you:

Discover how Cunningham illustrates the value of time and the benefits of making every moment count. Enjoy how seamlessly Cunningham overlaps three storylines, three time periods and three geographic locations in order to offer a unique perspective on Virginia Woolf.

Learn the depth and originality of Virginia Woolf’s many interests and themes, including her unconventional look at love and sexuality.

Take pleasure in reading about three women, each a wholly distinct personality, but all of whom portray different aspects of the real Virginia Woolf.

Reading this Pulitzer prize-winning novel represents hours well spent. Bookclub-in-a-Box leaves the reader unafraid to further explore Virginia Woolf. Every Bookclub-in-a-Box discussion guide includes complete coverage of themes, symbols, writing style, as well as interesting and little known background information on the novel and the author. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The many moods of Marilyn
A stunning book for any serious Marilyn afficianado - the photos, taken by little known paparazzi photographer Earl Leaf throughout Marilyn's career show so many of her moods, facets, expressions that it sometimes feels like you see her in an entirely new and unexpected light whenever you turn the page. Quite a few of the photographs show her lesser-known sides: her imperiousness, her toughness, her shrewdness, her ability to manipulate - all qualities she tried very hard to hide from her public but which nevertheless make her even more fascinating. Ventura's text gives some interesting insights and a uniquely lyrical point of view of Marilyn and what the images taken by Leaf's lens show of her. From her early starlet days to the years of her decline, we see her slowly eroding emotionally like an apparition fading into the light. Sometimes sad, often food for thought and always beautiful to look at, this is definitely one of the favourites in my collection. There are many images here you most likely have not seen before and will keep revisiting for many years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book
Marilyn is captured in just about every mood possible in this book.A wonderful book for my MM collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Photographs!

Who would want the director of the Minnesota Valley Zoo dead?Everyone!Anthony Wright made a career of getting what he wanted, whatever the price. When he's murdered and ends up as a late night snack for the zoo's fifteen-foot crocodile, few are shedding any tears. After police arrest the lead crocodile handler, it's up to zookeeper Lavender "Snake" Jones to prove her friend's innocence. But is she really helping? Each lie she exposes only serves to strengthen the case against him, rattles her belief in those she trusts and, in the end, threatens her own safety. With the help of her Aussie husband, herpetologist Jeff Jones, Snake hacks her way through the shadowy underworld of illegal animal trading to uncover a snakepit of sordid deeds, secret pasts, and corruption. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars not so well written
While the zoo setting is interesting, and the wildlife information accurate, I did not find the novel well-written at all. It was rather repetitive in phrasing and dialogue, and the characterization is flat. The main protagonist's husband seems to be a direct copy of the late Steve Irwin.

5-0 out of 5 stars Talk about taking a bite out of crime!
I like mysteries, but they are not a staple in my reading diet. The zoo setting was a big part of why I picked up "Death Roll."The book is filled with interesting tidbits about zoos, their animals and the animals' caretakers. But that alone would not make a good book.

The characters and their relationships with each other were very well developed.I can easily see this cast of characters holding up throughout a series.I don't think we'll be getting tired of Snake, Jeff or any of their friends and co-workers anytime soon.

The mystery is well thought out with plenty of secrets to uncover and many surprising twists and turns.I was kept guessing right up to the end.

When you add up the elements of setting, character and plot, all masterfully handled by Victor and Mallory, you get a great story that you won't want to put down until you turn the final page.

5-0 out of 5 stars Behind-the-scenes zoo thriller

The most fun I've had reading a mystery in a long time! It's a mystery why no other author has given readers a zoo setting before -- lots of behind-the-scenes animal fascination and human intrigue here.A wow of a book!
--Connie Fletcher, Chicago, IL

5-0 out of 5 stars Great mystery set in a zoo
Lavender "Snake" Jones is a zookeeper at the Minnesota Valley Zoo.Her husband, Jeff Jones, is a herpetologist from Australia and works with the crocodiles at the zoo.Plus he is the star of the show Zoofari.

When the director of the zoo, Anthony Wright, is discovered dead in the crocodile pit in the new Australia Walkabout Trail during the Beastly Ball at the zoo, zoo employee J. R. ends up the prime suspect.Snake sets out to prove their friend and colleague didn't murder Anthony.

But is she helping? She keeps uncovering lies that only serve to strengthen the case against him. This begins to throw suspicion on the people she trusts. Can she uncover the killer without putting herself in danger?

I loved the zoo setting for this mystery.Snake and Jeff are fabulous characters. The zoo really lent itself to the cozy genre with the "small town" feel of the employees and supporters.

There were plenty of secrets and corruption to keep me guessing at the killer's identity. And there were plenty of twists and turns in the plot to keep me reading.

I found myself not wanting to put this book down.I can't wait to read another one in this series.I hope the writers write a little faster!

5-0 out of 5 stars As I've said before, "a beastly good book!"

I am a mystery writer myself, and I read a lot of mysteries (to keep tabs on the competition, you know!), and I can honestly say that "Death Roll" is wildly distinctive--a ferocious pleasure to read. If you like unique, well-drawn characters, intriguing plots and subplots, and quirky, lovable, dangerous (sometimes lethal) animals, you'll enjoy every word of this zingy zoological novel. ...
