Product Description

ART HISTORY provides students with the most student-friendly, contextual, and inclusive art history survey text on the market.  These hallmarks make ART HISTORY the choice for instructors who seek to actively engage their students in the study of art.

This new edition of ART HISTORY is the result of a happy and productive collaboration between two scholar-teachers (Marilyn Stokstad and Michael Cothren) who share a common vision that survey courses on the history of art should be filled with as much enjoyment as erudition, and that they should foster an enthusiastic, as well as an educated, public for the visual arts.

Like its predecessors, this new edition seeks to balance formal and iconographic analysis with contextual art history in order to craft interpretations that will engage a diverse student population.  Throughout the text, the visual arts are treated as part of a larger world, in which geography, politics, religion, economics, philosophy, social life, and the other fine arts are related components of a vibrant and cultural landscape.

Product Description
Anne Michaels explores the chance and circumstance of life measured against the power of love. This novel, published in 1996, continues to resonate especially in our current times of trouble.

This Bookclub-in-a-Box discussion companion to Anne Michael’s novel Fugitive Pieces is as hard to put down as the novel. Each descriptive passage in the novel is a poem to be savored and our guide is a full and innovative interpretation of its symbols and images. The guide offers a unique perspective on the characters, their actions and interactions, and to the meanings they take from life and death.

Michaels sets her novel during and after WWII, linking the stories of two men – Jakob and Ben – both of whom are lost and found through love. Both seek faith and love as redemptive forces for a damaged soul.

We travel with Jakob from Greece to Canada, and with Ben, we return from Canada to Greece, a full and rounded trip. The Holocaust is not a new or untold story, but Michaels believes that a fresh approach is necessary. She feels strongly that the story should continue to be told and that it is renewed with each telling. Readers should take Michaels’ trip into the past and bring out of it a positive message of hope for the future – another rounded trip.

Bookclub-in-a-Box investigates the following ideas and themes in Fugitive Pieces, helping you:

- Discover how the title, Fugitive Pieces, with its many levels of meaning is applied to the themes of the novel.

- Follow Anne Michaels as she takes us back through "vertical" time (not linear time).

- Become breathless with the beauty and poetry of Michael’s descriptions.

- Come away from this novel with a renewed and positive feeling of anticipation for the future, an antidote to other perspectives of the Holocaust and the devastation of war.

Every Bookclub-in-a-Box discussion guide includes complete coverage of themes, symbols, writing style, as well as interesting and little known background information on the novel and the author – plus a complementary RAG (Read-Alongside-Guide), a quick-reference pamphlet with fascinating facts and questions to consider while reading the novel. The Bookclub-in-a-Box discussion guide for Fugitive Pieces is no exception! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review
This attractively packaged two-volume set attempts an almost impossible task: to present the art of the entire world, from vibrant cave paintings dating back 30,000 years to the creative trends of the late 20th century. Though the arts of Europe are the most thoroughly analyzed, respected scholars in several specialized fields cover other cultures with cogent essays. A more unusual feature is the space devoted to art created by women, such as the late-Renaissance painters Sofonisba Anguissola and Lavinia Fontana--the latter was invited in 1560 to be an official painter at the Spanish court. Relationships between the art of different cultures are emphasized and, while each section can stand alone, each is shown to fit meaningfully into the overall development of the world's artistic heritage. Beautiful images grace the production's 1,200 pages, not only well-known icons but a wealth of lesser-known gems are here, carefully chosen to demonstrate the points made in the text. There are many delightful surprises among the illustrations, many of which are in color, printed to high quality standards in Japan. For instance, line drawings explain technical details, from "Lost-wax Bronze-casting" to "Elements of the Skyscraper." A vast amount of information is presented, but it is very well organized and easy to access, and an extensive glossary answers many questions. Marilyn Stokstad's Art History is a true tour de force, and its light and humanistic approach is a refreshing change from previous encyclopedic art-historical studies. --John Stevenson ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible
I haven't recieved this product exactly a month and 2 days ago & haven't seen it. Money was taken out of my account and yet not seen the product do not purchase anything from this company. They just take your money! They haven't sent me a new one & can't tell me where my product is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Above and beyond what I had expected
I paid 80 dollars for a used book online, that I could have gotten on my current campus for just as much. The only difference being was that this product lived up to what was being sold, unlike most used copies one might find and buy on campus. The book was in absolutely great condition for what I paid for and arrived a little earlier than I had expected it to. Definitely worth looking into buying books online.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Service!
I got this book rather quickly, but haven't looked through it a whole lot because of its size. Its not easy to carry around to class or to school to study with... its more of a coffee table book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast Shipping and in great shape!
This book is HUGE! Could definitely break a foot if dropped haha! But it is a great buy! Well worth the price (much cheaper than at the college book stores!) Worked great for several of my art history classes at KU. A+++++

Darkness Rising -- Michael Bennett: A police officer driven almost past the edge of reason by the visions that were his unwanted gift.Valery Navarre: An innocent woman caught in a nightmare that didn't end when daylight came.Michael Bennett could not know what had compelled Valery Navarre to seek him out, any more than he knew why he had been chosen to see terrible crimes long before they occurred. Product Description
Michael Chabon's unusual novel, The Yiddish Policemen's Union, is set in Sitka, Alaska, a place where the Jews have lived since the imagined demise of the State of Israel in 1948. In 2008, the lease on sixty years of safe-haven in the north is due to expire and the Jews must find a new home.

In the meantime, one of Sitka s citizens has physically expired. Meyer Landsman, a down-on-his-luck Sitka policeman is suddenly faced with the murder of Mendel Shpilman, a case that those in charge want closed and filed away. But for Meyer, there are too many loose connections and unanswered questions.

Who killed Mendel Shpilman? When will the Jewish community start packing and where will they go? Why are the Verbovers not getting ready to go? What is their secret? And what in the world should Meyer do about his ex-wife, Bina?

Meyer's search for the truth makes its way through a precarious maze of friend and foe, the lawful and the outlaw, Jews, the Tlingit natives, the FBI, and others.

The Bookclub-in-a-Box guide to this novel explores the idea and meaning of having a permanent homeland. It ponders the destiny of the Diaspora Jew. It considers Chabon's exceptional use of symbols in relation to the novel's themes. And, among other topics, it considers Meyer's precarious relationship with his ex-wife, Bina. Included in the guide is a glossary of Yiddish references.

Every Bookclub-in-a-Box discussion guide also includes complete coverage of the themes and symbols, writing style and interesting background information on the novel and the author. ... Read more
