Product Description

Stand out from the pack--don't think conventionally, think laterally! And, you can start developing well-honed mental skills with more than 80 braintwisting puzzles that test your creativity and smarts. At first it might not seem as if there's enough information to solve them, but if you just persist, you'll come up with the logical answers. Some of the conundrums come from real life: try to figure out how the Greek playwright Aeschylus could have been killed by a tortoise or how the truth about Mary Queen of Scots' baldness was finally revealed. Or, give this a shot: A runner was awarded a prize for winning a marathon. But, the judges disqualified him when they saw a picture of his wristwatch. Why? Happy puzzling! Answer: A picture of the runner early in the race showed him wearing his watch on his right wrist. When he crossed the finishing line it was on his left wrist. The judges investigated and found that one man had run the first half and his identical twin brother ran the second half of the race.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
The purchase I made was exactly as it had been represented and was sent immediately. I wouldn't hesitate to make another purchase on Amazon!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book, even for a novice like me
This book has some nice puzzles in it, including some that have even stumped 'veteran' lateral puzzle thinkers I know. Some of them are easy enough to get right off, but that is more the exception than the rule.

I haven't read all of the solutions yet, but only a very few puzzles had truly implausible answers (those that did are why I didn't give the book top rating). ... Read more

Product Description

This extraordinary collection of correspondence by Paul Bowles spans eight decades and provides an evolving portrait of an artist renowned for his privacy. From his earliest extant letter, written at the age of four, to his precocious effusions to Aaron Copeland and to Gertrude Stein; from his meditations on mescaline as relayed to Ned Rorem, to his intensely moving letters to Jane Bowles during her illness, In Touch fills in the lacunae left by previous biographers and offers a rare look at the many aspects of Bowles’s brilliant career—as composer, novelist, short-story master, travel writer, translator, ethnographer, and literary critic.

Here is Bowles on the genesis of his first novel, The Sheltering Sky; on his distaste for Western melodies and his dogged attempts to record indigenous Moroccan music; on the Beats, Gore Vidal, Truman Capote, and Tennessee Williams; on the nature and craft of writing; on Bernardo Bertolucci, David Byrne, and Sting; on the decline of American and the challenges of living in North Africa. Gossipy, reflective, enlightening, and always entertaining, In Touch stands as an epistolary autobiography of one of the legendary writers of our time, and a unique chronicle of the twentieth-century avant-garde.

Product Description
Literary Theory/Philosophy

Renowned contributors use the late work of this crucial figure to open new speculations on "materiality."

A "material event," in one of Paul de Man's definitions, is a piece of writing that enters history to make something happen. This interpretation hovers over the publication of this volume, a timely reconsideration of de Man's late work in its complex literary, critical, cultural, philosophical, political, and historical dimensions.

Responding to the problematic of "materialism" as posed in Paul de Man's posthumous last book, Aesthetic Ideology, a diverse and distinguished group of scholars explores the question of "material events" in ways that illuminate not just de Man's work but their own, work at the forefront of critical theory, productive thinking, and writing in the humanities. The contributors work in disciplines ranging from art history to psychoanalysis, from literary studies and philosophy to political science, and include Jacques Derrida, who returns in an extended essay to a celebrated episode in Rousseau's Confessions discussed by de Man in Allegories of Reading.

The importance of de Man's late work is related to a broad range of subjects and categories and-in Derrida's provocative reading of de Man's concept of "materiality"-the politico-autobiographical texts of de Man himself. This collection is essential reading for all those interested in the present state of literary and cultural theory.

Contributors: Judith Butler, UC Berkeley; T. J. Clark, UC Berkeley; Jacques Derrida, cole des Hautes tudes en Sciences Sociales and UC Irvine; Barbara E. Johnson, Harvard U; Ernesto Laclau, U of Essex; Arkady Plotnitsky, Purdue U; Laurence Rickels, UC Santa Barbara; and Michael Sprinker.

Tom Cohen is professor and chair of English at the State University of New York, Albany. Barbara Cohen is director of Humanitech and senior editor in the Department of English and Comparative Literature at the University of California, Irvine. J. 4-0 out of 5 stars Lost Newport Found
Lost Newport was a great little review of homes many elegant that were lost due to many causes including arson..Pictures were good and a map of where they were was most instructive..After seeing Newport as it is today including these homes completes a look into the past and that guilded era

5-0 out of 5 stars The Newport You'll Never See
Lost Newport is unique in that it features 50 houses that no longer exist. The book is divided into four sections featuring cottages located in the North, Central, Bellevue Avenue and Oceanfront sections of Newport. Each structure has it's own 2-3 page chapter with accompanying text about the house, the owners, the architect, modifications to the structure, and its location. Also included are 4 maps associated with the above sections. Thus, one can determine where the house once stood. The photos are B&W, sepia, and a few colorized original B&Ws.
The text is brief, but interesting. Architectural styles include colonial, Victorian, Georgian, stick & shingle, Beaux Arts....you name it. The overall effect has an almost melancholy quality to it. The people are dead. The houses are gone. But this delightful little book, a good cup of coffee, and your imagination.....can bring them all back.

4-0 out of 5 stars Highly informative....
For those who have been looking for information or, even more difficult to find pictures of Gilded Age mansions long since razed to the ground, this book is a godsend. There are no color pictures, but the pictures there are are clear and give you the best possible idea as to the scale and opulence of these lost architectural treasures.Highly recommended, especially at this price.

5-0 out of 5 stars lost newport
Makes you realize just how much has been lost over the years, whether by nature or by the hands of man. The text is professionally written and very informative. The book should belong to anyone who loves Newport!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for Newport lovers!
If you love the history of Newport, like I do, you will love this book. The beautiful homes that you can see today are just a few of the architectural treasures that Newport has seen over the years. In this book you will learn about the many that have been lost. ... Read more

Product Description
Since the end of the Cold War, there has been increasing interest in the global dimensions of a host of public policy issues - issues involving war and peace, terrorism, international law, regulation of commerce, environmental protection, and disparities of wealth, income, and access to medical care. Especially pressing is the question of whether it is possible to formulate principles of justice that are valid not merely within a single society but across national borders. The thirteen essays in this volume explore a range of issues that are central to contemporary discussions of global politics. Written by prominent philosophers, political scientists, economists, and legal theorists, they offer valuable contributions to current debates over the nature of justice and its implications for the development of international law and international institutions. ... Product Description
Wayne F. Miller: Photographs 1942-1958 is the visual chronicle of the evolution of Wayne Forest Miller, a largely self-taught photographer who gladly left art school in 1942 to embrace the full spectrum of experience offered by the Second World War. Operating as a combat photographer under his own orders, and answerable only to Captain Edward Steichen, United States Navy, as to the results of his efforts, Lieutenant Miller photographed everything of interest that he encountered, from boredom to horror. Those images document an integral part of the American wartime experience and are secured in the National Archives in Washington D.C. What set Miller’s work apart from many other war photographers was in part a peculiar empathy, whether creating images of our own soldiers or Japanese survivors of the atomic bomb; in his work he strove to "climb inside those people, and look through their eyes."That ethos is present in all of Miller’s subsequent work, from his unique and comprehensive study (supported by the award of two Guggenheim grants) of the citizens of the Bronzeville neighborhood of postwar Chicago to his equally groundbreaking documentation a decade later of the daily life of an American family. This present volume offers some of Miller’s finest imagery from several classic areas of his oeuvre, as well as little-known and heretofore unpublished works. Throughout the book Miller’s own words illuminate the viewing experience with remarks that are by turns amusing, informative, and thought provoking. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The heart of photojournalism

#Wayne Miller is usually known as Edward Steichen's assistant for MoMA's 1955 Family of Man exhibition (twelve of his photos were included, the largest number from an individual) but he had worked for him before, in 1942. Steichen was in charge of the US Navy combat photo unit in Washington and had given Miller assignments during the Pacific campaigns.

The first section of this beautiful book covers the War Years: 1942-1945 with the thirty photos showing service men on and off duty. The first one, showing a wounded airman being lifted from his plane on the Saratoga, is quite extraordinary. Parts of the War Years also include ten remarkable photos of ordinary people showing their respects at Roosevelt's funeral and I found it interesting that this is followed by eleven photos taken in Hiroshima. The funeral and the effects of the atom bomb, both tragedies in their own way, are covered in such an honest, human way by Miller that it lifts his work out of the usual reportage photography.

The three other sections of the book: Midwest 1946-49; California 1947-1953 and Family 1946-1958 cover assignments about the northern negro in Chicago and a drug party (both appeared in Ebony magazine) a convention (Life) dog show (Chicago Daily News) migrant workers in California, summer camp for blind children, an Oakland juvenile detention center (Life) and finally Family with photos of his wife and children (Photo-Report) and the last seventeen photos for Life Magazine and Miller's 1958 book: `The world is young'. I thought the photos on all of these pages carry on the human feel that he establishes in the War years section. Over the years he completed 150 assignments for Life.

The book is a joy to look through, the 190 duotones are printed with a 175 screen on quality paper, the layout and type are elegant though unfortunately there is the usual photo book nonsense of running all the captions at the back of the book instead of placing them discretely on the same page as their photo (so lose half a star).

I thought this was a wonderful book to celebrate the work of a very caring photojournalist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Asking The Right Questions
I've carried this book around with me for the past six months re-reading some chapters more than a few times and I think I can honestly say Follow For Now is just brilliant. That seems to me the only way to describe it. Brilliant interviews of brilliant people served up in a brilliant package.

First off it's a book jam packed with so much cutting edge thought you may feel like an alien extracted your brain and replaced it with a biologically engineered multi-core processor. It can also be compared to a bar in a subbasement at MIT and shooting the bull with a collection of professors, computer geeks, multimedia gurus and severely gifted students.

The problem is the aliens may never land and I don't think there's a bar below MIT filled with Road Scholars. But we do have Follow For Now and it's Roy Christopher's brain child.

These interviews were originally online at frontwheeldrive.com. Roy Christopher started an amazing website and decided to put it in book form. It's like a syringe filled with knowledge injected directly into your spinal column. Science, technology, media, music, culture, literature--kind of candy bowl filled with a cornucopia of information and everything you never thought to ask.

They say in philosophy it's not the answers but the questions that mean the most. Roy Christopher asks those questions and does all the work for you. Your job is to let it all seep in and try not to lose your mind while you enjoy the spectacular view.

Product Description
In recent years, Earth systems science has advanced rapidly, helping to transform climate change and other planetary risks into major political issues. Changing the Atmosphere strengthens our understanding of this important link between expert knowledge and environmental governance. In so doing, it illustrates how the emerging field of science and technology studies can inform our understanding of the human dimensions of global environmental change.Incorporating historical, sociological, and philosophical approaches, Changing the Atmosphere presents detailed empirical studies of climate science and its uptake into public policy. Topics include the scientific, political, and social processes involved in the creation of scientific knowledge about climate change; the historical and contemporary role of expert knowledge in creating and perpetuating policy concern about climate change; and the place of science in institutions of global environmental governance such as the World Meteorological Organization, the Framework Convention on Climate Change, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Together, the essays demonstrate fundamental connections between the science and politics of planet Earth. In the struggle to create sustainable forms of environmental governance, they indicate, a necessary first step is to understand how communities achieve credible, authoritative representations of nature.ContributorsPaul N.
