5-0 out of 5 stars Under the Rainbow, but over my expectations
> Under the Rainbow chronicles the fascinating and melodramatic life of the beautiful and talented Liza Minnelli. Though at first glance one might think it's just another star bio, but this book not only has glitz and glamour, but tragedy and saddness as well as truimph. It has everything a good book should have to entertain.

> This book really makes the reader know and understand Ms. Minnelli. This bio is so compelling and whether or not you are a big fan of Minnelli you will enjoy reading every page. There are even moments the reader may mistake this bio for a lost Jackie Susann novel. It's even as hard to put down as a Susann novel! Can you say Valley of the Diva?

>Aside from the entertainment aspect of this book, there is also an in-depth look at Minnelli's tragic life and her resilience to overcome her pain. After reading Under the Rainbow it will inspire the reader to make the best out of life. In effect, not only does it entertain, but this bio serves as a Chicken Soup for the Saddened Soul as well. So drink it up and enjoy!

3-0 out of 5 stars An odd mix of tabloid and serious reporting
I have very mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand, it is gripping; it has all the elements of a great Hollywood story: the daughter of two legends (Judy Garland & Vincente Minnelli) becomes a legend herself. In fact, Ms. Minnelli's story is so fascinating that any hack could make a good book just writing the time line of her life. On the other hand, the book lacks intimacy. The one unforgettable chapter is the one dealing with Ms. Garland's death and how her children dealt with such a blow. The author is not very capable of writing concisely not only about Ms. Minnelli's films, but Ms. Garland's and Mr. Minnelli's as well. Considering that they're seminal parts of American film history, expounding on them would have helped the reader understand Ms. Minnelli's courage in her venture into moviemaking and theater. Ms. Minnelli comes out virtually unscathed from this book. Ms. Garland isn't so lucky and I had the nagging feeling that I'd heard all of those stories before and so had the author. The notion of the author sitting down and interviewing people who knew Ms. Garland or Ms. Minnelli feels highly unlikely. On the other hand, I bet he's read every book on each of them and simply regurgitated them back in his own simple way and filled in whichever blanks there were with logical guesses. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Contains errors and ommisions
Havingread this book I am compelled to mention a number of glaring errors I found based on personal knowledge:

1 : Thesong Sara Lee referred to on page 4 , was not composed for Liza . It was written as special material for Kaye Ballard or Martha Raye prior to 1976 when it was performed by Danny Fortus in the Kander and Ebb Musical 2 X 5 [ see # 2 ] .

2 : Thecorrect title of the Kander and Ebb Musical at the Village Gate referred to on page 181 is 2 X 5 .The 2 referred toJohn and Fred , the5 to the number of performers in the cast . Although it was pronounced as Two by Five (and may have even seen print that way ) theonly time it was calledTwo By Four prior to this book was in an unfavorable television review which said something to the effect that it "should have been called2 X 4 because the cast was wooden".During the show's brief run John and Fred occasionally were invited up by the cast at the end of act two at which time they did up to four numbers that hadn't for one reason or another made it into the official show . Thenight Liza attended was no exception . Fred Ebb did however say something to the effect that there was someone very close to him in the audience that had a much better voice than he did . Hejoked about having given her away at her wedding twice and invited Liza up to the stage . Sheopened withLIZA WITH A Z , followed with one of the songs fromCHICAGO that had been cut from the show(2X5) andone of the numbers they had written for her [ I'MONE OF THE SMART ONES or EXACTLY LIKE ME ).Itwas at this point that John suggested she sing NEW YORK , NEWYORK. Liza at first refusedbecause the number had already been sung in the show by D'Jamin Bartlet . D'Jamin however being a fan of both Liza and her mother said "go ahead I want to hear you sing it ". It was only at that point that Liza agreed . I must also tell you that having seen the number performed by Liza numerous times since it is still my personal favorite . .Rivaled only by the film version and the Liberty Weekend [ moreon that later) version . My reason for this is that due to the sound tech on the show Liza was performing without her usual hand held mike [ the show used hanging shotguns) , there was no time for any rehearsal since Liza's flight in from Los Angeles arrived only about an hour before showtime and John hit traffic coming in from I believe Connecticut and arrived after intermission . Itis the only time I heard the song performedinpublic by Liza as opposed to LIZA.I personally would have said her blouse was turquoise but I suppose that that's a matter of opinion. For the record scotch and coke was still her drink of choice at the time .She did not however actually drink the onebrought to her prior to act one, orthe fresh one brought to her prior to act two.

3 : On page six it states that Judy never appeared at Radio City .I beg todiffer . I usedto have an old souvenir program from Radio City that had been given to me as a birthday present because it contained a photo of Judy appearing at a benefit at Radio City.During the first STEPPING OUT at Radio City I passed it on to Liza as a belated opening night present.

4 : On page 246 the bookgets the audience response and the event right ,however the performance took place at the Meadowlands Arena in New Jersey not in New York Harbor where other events took place over the weekend celebration.

5 : On pages 209 and 220 the book confuses Liza'stwo Carnegie Hall appearances and the subsequentconcert tour(s) and album(s). The cable TV and video tape versions were recorded in New Orleans . The album was recorded at and released as "LIZA LIVE AT CARNEGIE HALL ". The latter Carnegie Hall appearance was called 3 WEEKS AT CARNEGIE HALL and the album LIZA MINNELLI AT CARNEGIE HALL.

6 : On page 228 the uncut A STAR IS BORN was shown at Radio City Music Hall ,not Carnegie Hall.

7 :On page 280 the book once againconfuses two events by omittingthe words " at the Bottom Line ,and CAROL WOODS" between the words"ELLEN GREENE " and "at Michael's Pub"' .The book also fails to mention that Bill Irwin , Ellen Greene and Carol Woods as well as Liza performed at a benefit for Starlightin Toronto the night that the song Stepping Out and the full cast production numbers were filmed for the movie STEPPINGOUT.. Also that when the movie wrapped a number of cast members went out to Las Vegas to see Lisa performsolo prior to the STEPPING OUT concert tour It was during this Las Vegas engagement that Lizainvited Carol Woods up to sing Come Rain Or Come Shine on more than one occasion .

I also think I should point out that any book on Liza that fails to mention BillLaVorgna couldn't have beeen researched to well.

Take most of this book witha large grain of salt . ______________ ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Peter Carrick Shows His Love For Liza
Peter Carrick has found in Liza Minelli the soft, gullible, almost-too-warm-hearted "place" that makes her one of the best-known performers in the history of pathos-heavy posturing.Helocates, with the precision of a man truly at once in love with and at oddswith his subject and himself, the part of Liza that makes her fans dance asif they (we) were in some sort of traveling revival--speaking in tonguesand crying in praise to all of that which we cannot know.In his thirdchapter, Carrick is at his best. His words flow out of his pen as if thepen were too full, and poorly contructed:with an ooze at once gracefuland horrifying. His passage on the sadness in Liza's laugh is especiallygratifying--in part because it is only implicit and never overtly addressedas such in the corpus.Carrick leaves the reader with a picture ofLiza--as an imp--childishly surrendering to the whimsical demands made onher by forces that deserve no respect. This lack of respect would beobvious to anyone not looking for a scapegoat.Instead, Liza wants to be avictim--she wants to cry for help like a child and then to reject thetender hand that reaches out to her, all in the name of continued sadness.Only then, as Carrick points out, might she continue to perpetuate theill-directed love that people feel for her.Such rhetorical strategies onher part both constitute a talent and mask the glaring fact that Liza'stalents are found only in her ability to appear vulnerable in the face of alife of money, ill-begotten fame, and unwarranted sympathy.Carrick as anauthor is himself a sort of dancer--a dancer with cake and pies and allthings fresh and good; tumbling down the steps with one too many coconutcream pies, as Liza counts and laughs and cries all at once in a single, huge burst of the emotion that makes her who Carrick thinks she is--thesame person he feels he _should_ be.This book is the best treatment yetof Liza--it is must-reading for all those for whom the Over the Rainbow isbut a mother's kiss away. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Liza Minnelli Scrap Book
This book is exactly what I was looking for.I have been an avid fan of Liza's for a long time.I have only just received the book and started reading it but I am sure I will be thrilled with the information and pictures contained within.I have tickets and I am looking forward to seeing her in Australia in October when she tours here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rejoice: Judy and Liza for the ages
Schechter has done for Judy and Liza what Koeschel has done for Wolfgang. It's all here: the mood, the method, the magnificence, in two encyclopedic texts that detail the lives and good works of two of the most fascinating and talented women of our time and all the ages--the Fantastic Garland and her equally incredible Daughter Liza Minnelli. Schechter has not only written two great books, he has done the world a terrific service in collecting some of their TV appearances on DVDs that have given a permanent showcase to material that otherwise might have been gone and forgotten forever, to the great loss of all of us. Colorful, informative, and fascinating, these two books on Judy and Liza, as well as the DVDs that constitute exhibits A-Z, should provide fans and would be admirers alike with endless pleasure and information, as they make an incalculably important and significant archival contribution to our heritage. Not to be missed.Martin Kantor, MD. Author of My Guy: A Gay Man's Guide to a Lasting Relationship and Together Forever: The Gay Man's Guide to Lifelong Love

5-0 out of 5 stars I've got a thing for Liza
and I would call that thing "a burning, selfless love." No, not the love you'd find between a man and a woman or a confused grad student... but the love and respect you might find between two bitter rivals who look at each other with a knowing nod and hint of a smile.

Liza's never been hotter than she is now and this scrapbook is just the thing you'll want to read to get you caught up on her deepest desires and secrets.

I know Liza is trying to put that awful David G. (I refuse to write the name "Gest") episode behind her and possible find love with someone who's less into getting bad plastic surgery and looking creepy.

I once met David Gest at a Rest Stop on the Jersey Turnpike. He was hitting the vending machine because his Fiery Habanero Doritos corn chips were stuck between the glass and that little spinny thing.

I was nice enough to help him out. I bought another bag of the corn chips and his dropped down. Unfortunately, my bag became lodged the same way his had. He didn't even say thank you. He just grabbed his chips and walked out. And I was the one the security guard yelled at! Can you believe it?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Liza Book!
If you are a fan of one of the greatest performers we have had, this book is for you.It includes many rare photos and a chronicle of her professional life over the last 40 (!) years. Schector, a long-time fan, has finally done the professional tribute to this star that needed to be done. You won't find what's in this book anywhere else!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Loving and Brilliant Tribute
The Liza Minnelli Scrapbook is the most loving and complete biography available today.Mr. Schechter succeeds in revealing the TRUE Liza, an incredibly talented, charismatic legend in her own right. ... Read more

Excerpt: Judy Garland (June 10, 1922 June 22, 1969) was an American actress and singer. Through a career that spanned 45 of her 47 years, Garland attained international stardom as an actress in musical and dramatic roles, as a recording artist, and on the concert stage. Respected for her versatility, she received a Juvenile Academy Award, won a Golden Globe Award, received the Cecil B. DeMille Award for her work in films, as well as Grammy Awards and a Special Tony Award. She had a contralto singing range. After appearing in vaudeville with her sisters, Garland was signed to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer as a teenager. There she made more than two dozen films, including nine with Mickey Rooney and the 1939 film with which she would be most identified, The Wizard of Oz. After 15 years, Garland was released from the studio but gained renewed success through record-breaking concert appearances, including a critically acclaimed Carnegie Hall concert, a well-regarded but short-lived television series and a return to acting beginning with a critically acclaimed performance in A Star Is Born (1954). Despite her professional triumphs, Garland battled personal problems throughout her life. Insecure about her appearance, her feelings were compounded by film executives who told her she was unattractive and manipulated her on-screen physical appearance. A Concert for Television is a 1972 concert film, made for television and starring Liza Minnelli. The film was produced by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse. As well as producing, Fosse also directed and choreographed the concert, and Ebb wrote and arranged the music with his song-writing partner John Kander. All four had previously worked on the successful film adaptation of Cabaret earlier in the same year. According to Minnelli, it was "the first filmed concert on television". Singer sponsored the production, although the producers did their best to keep any of the sponsors from seeing the rehearsals for fear of them pulling out due to Minnelli's short skirts. Filmed on May 31 at the Lyceum Theatre in New York, after only eight weeks of rehearsals, the concert was shot with eight 16mm film cameras at the insistence of Fosse, in contrast to other television specials of the time which were all shot on videotape. Throughout the concert Minnelli sings and dances to a variety of popular songs and standards, music from Cabaret, and songs specifically written for her by Kander and Ebb most notably the title song. Minnelli is accompanied on stage in many of the songs by dancers and backing singers, and in three numbers two guitarists, a keyboardist and a drummer. The costumes were designed by Halston, who was also a friend of Minnelli. Marvin Hamlisch was selected by Kander and Ebb to be the music coordinator. The film was first broadcast on NBC on Septem...http://booksllc.net/?id=22160386 ... Read more
