Product Description
Killing a sixty-ton sperm whale that could destroy a boat with a flick of its massive tail was no
easy task. Whalemen of the early nineteenth century were not just hunters, they were also explorers—sailing on the uncharted sea in search of some of the largest creatures on earth. The most famous whale of all? Moby Dick.
Here are Ishmael, Queequeq, Ahab, and of course, Moby Dick, rendered anew in a dynamic comic book adaptation of one of the greatest American novels ever written. The book also includes information about Herman Melville, facts about whales, and the history of the whaling industry. With all the flare and blaze of Melville"s original story, Moby Dick is sure to intrigue a new generation
of readers with this fast-paced and electric portrayal of the famous
battle between man and beast. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for introducing Moby Dick to reluctant readers!
We are a classical homeschool family and we LOVED this book.Reluctant readers will actually want to read it!Some of the vocabulary is difficult for a 2nd or 3rd grader, but it is a very fun read. The illustrations are captivating and the story is presented in an interesting way.My kids loved this book so much they walked around for weeks (limping like Ahab) saying things like, "Arrr, me hearties!", and "Thar she blows!"In addition, this book contains information on the whaling industry and the sperm whale.
HOMESCHOOLERS: READ MY OTHER REVIEWS!

5-0 out of 5 stars Inviting Version of Great American Classic
The famous Melville story is brought to life for young readers in a comic book style rendition. This time, it is told in the third person, and does not begin, "Call me Ishmael."

An excellent introduction to the life of Melville and the adventures he had prior to writing "Moby Dick" serves as a preface. An essay on whales and whaling concludes the book, providing a context for the story.

The build-up of the mythical whale intensifies page-by-page with careful flashback and foreshadowing.

I fully recommend this version of "Moby Dick."

5-0 out of 5 stars Moby Dick
If you're looking for an exciting way to introduce your kids to the classics, this 'retelling'of Moby Dick is it. The author and illustrator(Lew Sayre Schwartz & Dick Giordano)manage to stay faithful to Melville's original tale while condensing it into 48 pages of adventure and danger. The interplay of the scary, cartoonlike illustrated panels and the gripping, dramatic text is perfect for kids. A 9-year-old of my acquaintance actully put his Game Boy aside to read this book. He was completely caught up in the suspense on every page. One example: a close-up drawing of a terrified Ishmael when he meets Queequeg for the first time, matched with this text, "There in the dimly lit room looms the forbidding image of Queequeg...harpoon at the ready, poised to sink its sharp head into his shaking body!!". I should add that the 9-year-old's father was also caught up in this Moby retelling, having lots of fun shouting out the story's most famous line, "Thar she blows!". A bonus is the brief bio of Melville, and information about whales and whaling, all written in an entertaining, kid-friendly manner. Kids will love this book, so will you. ... Read more

Product Description
'Call me Ishmael'. Thus starts the greatest American novel. Melville said himself that he wanted to write 'a mighty book about a mighty theme' and so he did. It is a story of one man's obsessive revenge-journey against the white whale, Moby-Dick, who injured him in an earlier meeting. Woven into the story of the last journey of The Pequod is a mesh of philosophy, rumination, religion, history and a mass of information about whaling through the ages. This epic story, here presented in unabridged form, receives an equally epic reading from the outstanding American actor William Hootkins. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Moby Dick Revisited
Moby Dick was my favorite novel when I wrote a paper about it in an American Literature college many years ago in college. It is still my favorite and I have read it numerous times. I recently listened to the audio version narrated by William Hootkins, who looks and sounds like Orson Wells. His performance is totally engrossing and brings out the humor in portions of the book that might otherwise seem a bit dry. The poetic passages are so beautifully rendered that I listened to them repeatedly. The 24 hours of unabridged Melville flew by and I plan to revisit this CD in whole and in parts whenever I find myself growing "grim about the mouth" and need to "sail about a little and see the watery part of the world."

5-0 out of 5 stars Great listening.
There are many parts you must hear twice...or thrice, they are so beautifully written. Great narration too, almost better than reading the book. (Almost.)

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Recording There Is
Hootkins did a really great job reading through this novel, doing his best to retain interest in even the most boring of chapters.Listening to the majority of the novel in the car, I really feel like I received a much better understanding and experience for my first time going through the book by listening to this particular recording, over another or by actually reading the text.I felt engaged in the story the entire time and I really did lose myself to Hootkins' read.

2-0 out of 5 stars Booo!Over dramatic and a bit too camp.
I recently purchased Moby Dick online because of the reviews on Amazon but found it to be irritating. It was very expensive but I made the purchase anyway, really looking forward to being taken on an epic voyage. Unfortunately it was a big let down. If you're English imagine Graham Norton doing `Jackanory', toned down a few notches.

His slight accentuation of every utterance in the book was like Chinese drip torture, driving everything home resulted in a camp drama school rendition with no space for the listener to do any of the work... nothing could breathe.

I tried to listen so many times, but each time I could listen for shorter and shorter periods until just picking up the headphones made me queasy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Call me Ishmael
Call me Ishmael. One of the most famous opening lines in all of English literature. I was thrilled to find this audio edition of a lengthy classic that I, like many Americans, doggedly plowed through in high school, when I was certainly much too young to appreciate its depth and meaning. Having recently completed Ahab's Wife, my interest in Ahab and what his choices brought about for him, was piqued, and I decided to take another look. This audio version is perfect for someone like me - I know I would not have persevered in reading this on my own.
This version has kindled an understanding and admiration for Moby Dick as adventure story, allegory, and journey of self-discovery. It was surprising how much I learned, simply in the factual sense, about the whaling industry in New England, where I was born and raised and still reside today. This is a book that is probably ruined by the introduction of it during adolescence, when it has little to say to the very young reader. Like Nathaniel Hawthorne, Melville is an author who speaks to the reader who has grappled with the universal questions about life and death, sanity and madness, revenge and forgiveness. Not to mention multiculturalism, racism and tolerance. And, a new word - moby - was coined and entered into the English language.
Intelligently narrated by William Hootkins, the audio version has a lot to recommend it and is a pleasant way to revisit an important American masterpiece. Take another look (or listen!) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable book
I started reading this book to my son when he was less than 2 years old, he loves it and asks for it often before bed.Now that he is 2 1/2 he pretends to be Moby Dick or one of the harpooners. The drawings are poetically evocative and full of detail of water, ships, adventure and nature. The story line is true to the original and still interesting to this mom, even after many many readings.I highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars A White Whale for the Wee Ones
This marvelous summation of Melville's classic novel succeeds in conveying the essense of that great work in just 32 pages without the implicit disrespect for the original that all too often afflicts such adaptations. The language of this fine retelling evokes the rich and complex flavor of the original without rendering the story in any way unintelligible to its young audience. I was especially pleased that Drummond chose to keep Ishmael as the first-person narrator of the story; somehow, a third-person retelling would seem at odds with the intimate tone in which Ishmael shared his epic tale with the reader. The bold, colorful illustrations that illuminate this handsome volume serve as an effective enhancement to, rather than a distraction from, the meaning of the text. I suspect that more than one young reader may someday approach Melville's text with enthusiasm and not dread as a consequence of having read or heard this fine picture book in the dimly remembered past.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well rounded but a little intense
The book has to be good to be considerd a litterary classic. Melvilles book about the obssesive Ahab, the Harpooner Quequay, the former teacher Ishimial and the White Whale is an excelent read but it may be too intense for younger readers. The hellish obssesion of Ahab may be a bit to much for some children. With all of that being said I do think that everyone at some time must read this it is a work of art. ... Read more

Product Description

Some literary classics have been around for centuries. Miranda Tate's just hoping to survive junior year....

Her summer reading assignment is Moby-Dick, but Miranda's vacation hasn't exactly been smooth sailing. Between working at her stepmother's hideous all-pink boutique, and having broken up with her basketball champ boyfriend Ryan, not to mention snoozing her way through one of literature's heaviest tomes, she's almost looking forward to returning to Bard Academy. That was before her kid sister Lindsay smashed up their dad's Land Rover and got shipped off to Bard herself. Is the punishment Lindsay's -- or Miranda's?

A private school staffed by the ghosts of famous dead writers is hard enough to navigate without a freshman kid sister in tow, but now Miranda's trying to sort out her feelings for her brooding friend Heathcliff, who happens to be a fictional character, while keeping Bard's secrets from her nosy sister. And when her nemesis Parker handpicks gullible Lindsay to be a Parker clone, Miranda knows a storm is brewing. Then, Lindsay disappears in the woods...and a frantic search sends Ryan, Miranda, and Heathcliff to Whale Cove, a spot rumored to hide a sunken pirate's ship. But something -- or someone -- even more ominous and terrifying lurks there. Can Miranda stay the course and save her sister? ... Read more

Book three of the Bard Academy Series

Miranda is back at Bard Academy for her junior year, after a summer spent in hell (also known as her stepmother's ALL PINK store).

At Shipwreck Island, Heathcliff (yes, the one from Wuthering Heights (And Wuthering High (Book 1)) - is waiting for her. Sadly, this year Miranda isn't going to Bard alone but with her little sister Lindsay - who seems to like getting Miranda in trouble.

Of course, being at Bard, things quickly turn for the strange.

The Bard Academy Series are three books I wish more people read. Miranda is a funny, smart protagonist. A girl I would like to be and would like to have as friend.

I hope MTV books stops being stupid soon and we get more Miranda, Heathcliff & Co.

PS- Heathcliff is by far one of the hottest guys I've ever read.

4-0 out of 5 stars good series
This is a very interesting and novel series.I can't wait to read the rest!I've gotten attached to the characters, and am eager to see what awaits them in future books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
Moby Clique was a pretty good book. The references to classical books and the titles makes me want to check out all the classic books mentioned in this series (and that's saying something, since I don't really like to read literary fiction). What I like about this series is that Miranda doesn't change one bit. Sure she matures and bit and grows up, but her voice is still the same. After a while, in a lot of series, the main characters change and don't feel the same. This book can be read as a stand-alone since in the first few pages that author recaps on what happened in the first two books. The author makes Lindsay a secondary characters and adds in her more scenes, making Moby Clique much more funny. I looked forward to when Lindsay appeared in the book. The relationship between Lindsay and Miranda, resembled my relationship with my little sister. Lindsay and Miranda don't get along and fight a lot, like my sister and me, but they really do love each other. I really liked how real their relationship felt. The pirate theme in this novel was great and I really liked it. Overall, I suggest you pick up a copy of all, if not just Moby Clique at your local library or bookstore.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another winner!
I am a huge fan of the Bard Academy boks and I really loved this latest one! It hooked me, and reeled me in. I love the new character addition to the story as well. I cant wait for the next book!

5-0 out of 5 stars moby clique
"Moby Clique" is the 3rd installment in the Bard Academy series, and, as usual, Cara Lockwood has written a hilarious book. In my opinion, she writes some of the funniest books out there. Much to my excitement, this Bard novel showcases Sylvia Plath & a pirate theme. Throughout her adventures, Miranda's relationship with Heathcliff develops-- I sincerely hope there are more Bard novels to come. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Replay Offers Unplugged Look at Famous Raver
(As previously printed in Mean Street Magazine)

In Martin James' "Replay,"Moby aptly describes himself as the little man behind the curtain in the Wizard of Oz. He plays, mixes, samples; the audience jumps, dances, sweats. All this ecstasy-permeated excitement is created by one unlikely man: small, somber, and sober.
In "Replay," James draws from seven years of interviews with Moby to offer a look behind the curtain at the world's most famous raver. The book succeeds on several levels.
For those of us relatively new to the Moby phenomenon, "Replay"breaks it down from the beginning, starting with the birth of Richard Melville Hall in Harlem in 1965. The book offers definitive proof that this slight, bald-headed mass of genius and contradictions did not drop to the Earth from space.
For DJs and techies, Replayoffers a chronicle of dance music from the `70s to the present, plus practical insight into the equipment Moby uses to create his huge sound (Cubasesoftware).
Like any good bio, "Replay"offers scandal too. We learn that Moby's first musical purchase as a kid was the 7-inch single of Convoy, which he listened to in a continuous loop. We also learn that the once monk-like vegan, Christian and teetotaler has learned to not only rock the party but party himself, now indulging in champagne and a modicum of sexual adventures.
And for anyone who is awed by the power of Moby's music, the book offers a glimpse into his musical influences and development. The book also includes one hell of a discography.
It is James' reverence for music that represents "Replay's"greatest weakness as well as strength. He literally takes the reader to school in the first few chapters of the book with references to countless musical influences (Brian Eno, Gary Numan, Kraftwerk, Joy Division, Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV are among the less obscure). As the book charts the development of dance music in all its guises-disco, electro-funk, hip-hop, house, acid house, ambient- and all of its geographical permutations, the reader begins to feel they have unwittingly enrolled in Techno 101.
What keeps the reader turning the pages? Among other things, the words of Moby himself.
You earn something important in "Replay," if you haven't discovered it already: Moby was born to create dance music and according to Moby, we were all born to enjoy it:
"When you're born the first sound you hear is a screaming woman, unless your mother was anaesthetized. So your most primal sounds are, first of all the heartbeat, which is like the kick drum, and then a screaming woman. So we've all been listening to techno ever since we were born." ... Read more

The third in Will Eisner’s series of adaptations of the classics. The story of a dangerously obsessed man. Obsessed with seeking vengeance against a great white whale that pushes him and his reluctant crew in a quest across the seven seas. Obsessed with pitching his boat against a formidable beast against all odds and oblivious to the great risk to life and limb. Fully painted by Will Eisner. Seen for the first time in the USA.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad drawings ruin a great story
There are better childrens' illustrated versions of Mody-Dick out there. It is obvious that Eisner did no research on whales on whaling.Sperm whales with visible teeth in their upper jaws?Harpoons being thrown with one hand instead of two?Whaleboats that are shaped more like bathtubs instead of the sharp-ended craft of reality?Eisner has trashed a great story with his cartoonish incompetence.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Grand Master of Comics takes on a classic.
With his adaptation of Moby Dick, Will Eisner seems to be reaching out to younger readers, but anyone who appreciates a great story and wonderful art should enjoy it.

The adaptation is brief, so Eisner boils the story down to the bare bones- Man vs. Nature. Eisner's art is (as usual) amazing. Since his work is usually published in black-and-white, the painted color is a real treat. The climactic battle between Ahab and the White Whale is stunning.

If this beautiful book makes someone want to try Melville's classic novel, then so much the better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Color panels bring the classic alive
It's hard to easily categorize Will Eisner's Moby Dick: this classic of American literature by Herman Melville is here translated to the graphic novel form, translating the story of one man's obsession with a huge whale into a series of color panels which bring the classic alive.Reluctant readers as well as fans of graphic novels will find this illuminating.

1-0 out of 5 stars What the...?
There have been several comic book versions of Moby-Dick down through the years and this is by far the worst. The illustrations are a travesty. Will Esner obviously did no research into whales or whaling and it would appear that his reading of Moby-Dick was cursory at best.If you want a good comic version of Moby-Dick then seek out the Classics Illustrated version from the 1950s. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
This was my first purchase for my new kindle, and I'm very frustrated that there is no table of contents and I cannot jump from one chapter to another, as indicated in kindle instructions. I would be better able to orient myself in this book if I just had a print version in my hands.

1-0 out of 5 stars moby dick
This was the worst book. The discriptions of everything in the book were so extensive that he forgot to tell the story of moby dick.....

4-0 out of 5 stars Tedious but great
I had been many years since I read Moby Dick.
I had forgotten the tedious style it is written in.
It's worth reading, a real classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thar she blows!
Wow! Who would think that reading Moby Dick on an iPhone would be such a pleasure? I've never been a fan of digital reading, but this experience has changed my tune. OK, truth be told, I haven't finished it yet, but hey, it's a big book! The only drawback to reading in this format might be that one can't easily see their progress through this weighty tome. I have, at times, felt lost at sea and picked up a paper copy to see how far along I was. Has anybody else read this book on a mobile phone?

2-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre typesetting
No distinction is made between hyphens and dashes, and there are plenty of both in the book.Buy a different edition. ... Read more

While the plot of this Great American Novel, the story of a sea captain's obsession with a white whale, is fairly straightforward, the possible interpretations and meanings of it are immense and unknowable in scope. With its myriad of metaphors, symbols, and characters, Moby Dick is as immense as the world itself. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Skip the notes
For cryin' out loud read the book! No one can put Melville's prose in a pamphlet.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lifesaver
Thank you Cliffs Notes:0)While Moby Dick is a somewhat challenging book to grasp and put into a more meaningful context, this companion guide helped me to better understand the text. While reading the original book along with the Cliffs Notes, I was able to more clearly express the book in my own words and earn that A on my paper. This is a definate help with a complicated text!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
Great book, details, and synopsis. However the editors could have spent a little more time with exact detail, but for a large book there are many hidden meanings that the author put in.

4-0 out of 5 stars better than most, not as good as somd
Book notes are not only good for slackers, they also provide insights that we have missed. I consider the notes to be substential, but too shallow. As for the previous reviewer's comment on the "New Yorker": Ismael was an image of Melville. The book was mostly written by Melville in Massachusetts. Okay! Good Luck! Bye!

1-0 out of 5 stars Error after error after error
Cliff's Notes have never been popular with teachers. Now, after reading their summary of Moby-Dick, I understand why.The number of mistakes in this pamphlet are astonding. For example, in the "Synopsis of Moby-Dick," beginning on page 10, we see the following statement:"Ishmael, an islander of Massachusetts, succumbs to the urge to go to sea..."Islander of Massachusetts?Since when?Melville's book clearly states that Ishmael is from Manhattoes.Manhattoes is just another name for Manhatten Island, as in NEW YORK CITY!Last I checked New York City is in New York State, not Massachucetts. This is only the first in a long list of errors of fact and interpretation that riddle this boiled down excuse for a companion guide to one of the greatest books ever written. You're better off reading a comic book or children's edition of Moby-Dick if you can't handle reading the original text itself.Cliff's Notes on Moby-Dick is just going to lead the student down the merry path to an "F" on their report card. ...
