If you have to read this book for class but need something to give you a head start, this is a good one because you get pictures and simpler language. Then you can read the harder one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Moby Dick- The undoubtful classic of American Literature
Moby Dick is truly a masterpiece. For those who only skim the surface we find an enticing tale of a man driven mad by injury and forced to revenge on his assailant, but if we dare to look past the mask, we find the book not only to contain this, but the struggle between man and God in the universe.Ahab, the mad captain, sets out on a ship representative of the world, in a quest to ultimately destroy Moby Dick, an untamable Spermaceti, in an effort to free himself from the restraints of nature imposed upon man.The book also addresses racism, the human soul, and evil among other issues. Product Description
Its famous opening line, "Call me Ishmael," dramatic in its stark simplicity, begins an epic that is widely regarded as the greatest novel ever written by an American. Labeled variously a realistic story of whaling, a romance of unusual adventure and eccentric characters, a symbolic allegory, and a drama of heroic conflict, Moby Dick is first and foremost a great story. It has both the humor and poignancy of a simple sea ballad, as well as the depth and universality of a grand odyssey. When Melville's father died in 1832, the young man's financial security went too. For a while he turned to school-mastering and clerking, but failed to make a sustainable income. In 1840 he signed up on the whaler, Acushnet, out of New Bedford, Massachusetts. He was just 21. A whaler's life turned out to be both arduous and dangerous, and in 1842, Melville deserted ship. Out of this experience and a wealth of printed sources, Melville crafted his masterpiece. 18 unabridged CDs comprising 21 Hours of content. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Audio Moby Dick
I bought this item because Frank Muller was a wonderful reader, particularly of classics like this one.It was actually his reading of this book that made me realize how funny Moby Dick was, as he had with Nabokov's Lolita for me before. He knows exactly how to get the right intonation, and wonderful resonance in his voice to bring out the very best in 'Ishmael's' narration.I discovered this recording in a library version and wanted to be able to listen to it whenever I felt like it.I wish that whoever recorded this version would reissue it so that others could discover or rediscover the joy of Melville by listening to it in Muller's voice. The perfect audio-reader for this novel.

Moby Dick is a beautifully written book that reveals the wildness of the amazingly multicultural world of 19th century whaling. And, of course, Melville's writing is unique and expressive.Naturally, whaling is an occupation that should be and stay gone, but historically-speaking, it's a fascinatingly rich world, as is the language of the book.I highly recommend Frank Muller's Moby Dick to listeners who might have found this work dry or overly wordy or whatever, and hence, didn't finish it.A great book in a great reading. Now my favorite classic novel.Fabulous.

Only listen to unabridged audio books. It's pointless, otherwise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Masterful audio reading
I'm not going to review the book story itself, because with classics, I feel that there is only two reasons to review such things when there are hundreds or thousands of better reviews espousing their greatness---to review the quality of the print or recording, or if the classic struck you poorly, and you must condemn it with a negative review.

So I have to do the first one.How deeply Frank Muller plunges into this world, reading with great precision in his words and accuracy. No line is given less attention than another, everything read fluidly and perfectly.I could clearly tell at which moments his narration seems to sound just slightly different, indicating it was recorded later on, for the obvious reasons.

To get them out of the way, first, I need to put forth my complaints:

- Many of the characters sound the same.Considering that it's one man reading it all, I only say this because it warrants mentioning that for characters like Ahab, other captains, the owners of the Pequod, the innkeeper in the beginning, he uses the same type of growling "piratey" voice.

That's actually my only complaint.Other characters are voiced with a slim variety, with a clean vocal for characters like Ishmael and Starbuck, a slight "piratey" growl much cleaner and lighter for Stubb, a childlike, high pitched warble for the likes of Pip, a genial sort of "negroid" accent for Fleece, the Cook, particularly with his preaching to the sharks, and a strong, stern low monotone for Queequag and Tashtego.

Another bit I liked was that Muller reads the book word for word, without trying to put voice to actions or parts that would seem to warrant an acting out or a conjugation. For example; the carpenter's sneezing while talking to Ahab on the progress of his new ivory leg.Rather than actually sneezing himself, Muller interjects the actual word "Sneezes" in between much of the Carpenter's words.

And like any book, written or heard, I put a stellar cast myself for the characters of the book in my head!

Captain Ahab - Ricardo Montalban
Starbuck - Judson Earney Scott
Ishmael - DeForest Kelley
Queequag - Raoul Trujilo
Stubb - Kevin Conway
Fedallah - Honglei Sun
The Carpenter - Daniel Day-Lewis
The Blacksmith - Tobin Bell
Flask - Dennis Fimple
The Cook (Fleece) - Brock Peters
Pip - Cleavon Little
Daggoo - Ving Rhaimes
Captain Peleg - Stephen Lang
Captain Bildad - Kevin McNally

5-0 out of 5 stars Melville, Muller and Moby Dick
If you've tried Moby Dick and found it beyond your appreciation, it is likely because you've read it wrong.Mr. Muller doesn't suffer this trouble.Listen to this exceptional story, let the master reader transfix you with his fine performance.Muller will guide you through this incredible tale and in the process teach you how to read this great book. You'll be glad you listened.

5-0 out of 5 stars Knowing Muller, recently deceased, read this is recommendation enough
For those who don't know the name, Frank Muller was among the best when it came to transmitting books into audio form. He respected the work, the voice of the author and he knew enough to put himself second and the work first.

So why do I speak of him in past tense? Because this man with a gift for words, language and acting (he had classical training as an actor) died on June 4, 2008. You can read more about that on my profile page, if you are so interested.

In the meantime, if you want an audio version of Melville's classic work and if you want to be entranced by the tale of man and whale, you can't do better than this version. Yes, you could read it...yes, you could try to cipherout the meaning in the work but I'd make the argument that listening to Frank Muller read this is likely to lead you towards a greater understanding of this work than if you read it on the page. A controversial view, perhaps, but think of how many plays or works of art or pieces of music you've seen or heard and then consider how much fuller the experience can be when you have a multi-sensory approach. Audiobooks offer that opportunity and when it comes to man and whale and reader and book...well, listen to the version by Frank Muller. For sheer power, grace, beauty and the ability to transmit the MEANING of this novel, you won't do better.

If you don't already know the plot, well...on the surface it is about a man's obsession with hunting one particular whale. The surface, of course, is just that. I'd had to read this book during college and can say that it wasn't till I heard the book read aloud, by Frank Muller, that I began to have a stronger sense of why this book is considered a classic. The man puts the nuances into the words, leads the reader in directions unexpected...a bit like finding some strange sea creature in the depths of the ocean or some awareness in a part of one's brain that was untapped before then. So take your literary journey with Muller as your guide.

After that, if you want to find critiques of the book, try to parse out the transcendent meaning and all that, you'll have had a great start by simply listening to one fine reader first.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Adventure
In the story Moby Dick by Herman Melville the two main characters are Ishimael and Ahab the captain. They both had a conflict they had to over come. The first character is a researcher, Ishimael. One character trait he had was intelligence. This is because he had to lead the crew without them dying. The other trait he had was courage. I think this because he was the only one on that boat for research.

The other character is a captain on the pequod named Ahab. I think one of his character traits is bold hearted. I think this because he had to lead his crew on a small boat so they wouldn't die from the great whale. His other character trait is brave. I think this because he had to lead his team though the huge waves and the whale without dying so they could live.

They had to overcome a conflict. One conflict is Moby Dick broke the pequod. Then the rest of the crew had to go on a little row boat. The other conflict was most of the crew dies from the great whale when Moby Dick strikes the "pequod" and most of the crew members with it. Then Ishmael and Ahab have to go on one row boat, with one harpoon.

The two themes in this story were courage and community. One of the themes was courage. This is because you have to be brave to not die from the great whale and have to catch it. The crew has to work together as a community to stay alive. Will they live or die?

5-0 out of 5 stars The Must Read Book
Dear readers around the world,

The book Moby Dick gives you reasons why you should be on the sea and what's fun. I mean, come on you have to read this book. Queequeg is one of the main characters in the story and he is a cannibal. The book Moby Dick is so great each member of my family has a copy of it. I love this book so much that we own every different author's book. For all of you who like exciting, suspenseful, and adventuresome stories about men trying to kill whales for a living, this is the book for you to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Adventure of A Lifetime
Moby Dick is the tongue-twisting tale of young school teacher,
Ishmael who joins up with his enigmatic partener, Queequeg who
worships a figurine called Yojo, but when they join The Peoqu-
od. Their lives are foreverdiminshined by the twisted Captain
Ahab who is in search of a dangerous yet intelluctal whale by t-
he name of Moby Dick who bit his leg off and is left with a woo-
den pegleg.

Now, wherever the Great Illustrated Classics are, you better get
'em and learn about classics you've missed because Herman Melvi-
lle, Charlotte Bronte, Alexandre Dumas, Daniel Denfoe, Charles Dickens, and Robert Louis Stevenston and many more are just a
bunch of good classics that faced many hardships toward ink and
paper to write celebrated classics, and Moby Dick is one of 'em!

4-0 out of 5 stars Moby Dick
This book was very interesting for me. It had lots of up and down rising actions and lots of conflicts. The story is mainly about Captain Ahab tring to get his revenge on this bellicose whale named Mody Dick. Also at the end, there is a cataclysm that brings everything down and ends the story. I would recommend this book to kids who like adventure or travel stories. There are lots of lesson's from this book. One of the lessons is "Tring to revenge others can cause your death" ... ... Read more

Product Description

In The Errant Art of "Moby-Dick," one of America’s most distinguished critics reexamines Melville’s monumental novel and turns the occasion into a meditation on the history and implications of canon formation. In Moby-Dick—a work virtually ignored and discredited at the time of its publication—William V. Spanos uncovers a text remarkably suited as a foundation for a "New Americanist" critique of the ideology based on Puritan origins that was codified in the canon established by "Old Americanist" critics from F. O. Matthiessen to Lionel Trilling. But Spanos also shows, with the novel still as his focus, the limitations of this "New Americanist" discourse and its failure to escape the totalizing imperial perspective it finds in its predecessor.
Combining Heideggerian ontology with a sociopolitical perspective derived primarily from Foucault, the reading of Moby-Dick that forms the center of this book demonstrates that the traditional identification of Melville’s novel as a "romance" renders it complicitous in the discourse of the Cold War. At the same time, Spanos shows how New Americanist criticism overlooks the degree to which Moby-Dick anticipates not only America’s self-representation as the savior of the world against communism, but also the emergent postmodern and anti-imperial discourse deployed against such an image. Spanos’s critique reveals the extraordinary relevance of Melville’s novel as a post-Cold War text, foreshadowing not only the self-destructive end of the historical formation of the American cultural identity in the genocidal assault on Vietnam, but also the reactionary labeling of the current era as "the end of history."
This provocative and challenging study presents not only a new view of the development of literary history in the United States, but a devastating critique of the genealogy of ideology in the American cultural establishment.

5-0 out of 5 stars The abridgement
I liked this version better than The Great Illtistrated Classic.

It was more detailed. It had more of the Melville frases as ,"For Hates' sake, be my last breat I spit at thee!"
Anyway, it was better than the other abidgements.

I have read other people's reviews and I agree with the ones that liked the novel. I enjoyed reading Moby Dick, because it is a detailed and interesting book. I had no problem staying interested in the story, and it made me want to watch the movie, witch I later did with my grandfather.

Melville gives a detailed profile of Moby Dick's personality. He makes the whale seem like a devil. He appears mean and evil. For example pg.91 says, "I shuttered at what I heard the stories of the white whale were true Moby Dick was a killer!" From begging to end to the end, I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys adveture books and likes a good story.
