Product Description

With generosity of spirit, ebullience, and sly humor, Mary Tyler Moore presents the intensely private, often funny, and sometimes startling story of her life with diabetes. Growing Up Again is a delightfully candid read for her legion of fans, the more than 20 million Americans with diabetes, and everyone struggling to cope with life’s unexpected challenges.

Mary Tyler Moore, actress and activist, relates the highs and lows of living with type 1 diabetes for the past forty years. With inspired, well-crafted prose, she drills down to the most heartfelt, yet universal truths about life—including the lives of those with diabetes. She unflinchingly chronicles her struggle with diabetes, as well as her successful rehabilitation from alcohol dependence, all while deriving gratification from her roles as an actress, mother, businesswoman, campaigner, and fund-raiser. Her revealing tales of both her successes and failures in coping with diabetes offer others with the disease guidance and inspiration through example. In the book, stories include her rebounding from a low-blood-sugar episode during a Mary Tyler Moore Show script reading after the director poured orange juice down her throat, to misadventures caused by diabetes-related vision impairment at a dimly lit party for John Travolta.

She also taps into the vast diabetes research network to talk to diabetic children and adults and with leading experts who are discovering new ways to control diabetes and its complications, and pursuing new ways to cure this disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Only One Mary!!!"
Mary Tyler Moore is known for many things: a great television actress who graced our TV screens on two hit series, "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and her own sitcom, "The Mary Tyler Moore Show"; an extraordinary film actress who was Oscar nominated for "Ordinary People"; a smart business woman who for years owned her own studio, MTM; an animal rights activist; and a person living with diabetes.

Mary's well-written book "Growing Up Again..." deals with her life-long battle with diabetes. Here she documents her discovery, while on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", that she was diabetic, the obstacles that she encountered in living with a disease that very few knew much about at the time, and how she overcame those obstacles. Mary was in essence the first celebrity to embrace diabetes and become its national spokesperson in her attempts to make people aware of this issue, while at the same time trying to raise funds for research.

If your looking for a tell-all biography on Mary Tyler Moore this is not it. This book mainly deals with Mary's battle being a diabetic. She has, however, written her memoirs called "After All" and that too is very well-written where Mary discusses the highs and lows of being an actress, her divorce from Grant Tinker, and the unfortunate loss of her only child to a gun shot wound.

2-0 out of 5 stars Written in a weekend
I bought this book to celebrate my 10th anniversary of having Type 1. I was disappointed. Although the funny anecdotes are pleasant to read, I was craving a little more insight and a little more thoughtfulness from Ms. Moore. I didn't learn anything from this book. I would think that writing about living with chronic disease for decades wouldn't be a weekend project for the author, but unfortunately her book reads that way.

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing honesty to Moore's recollections
Mary Tyler Moore was once America's Sweetheart, a shining beacon of happy domesticity on "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and an iconic figure of both pop culture and the women's liberation movement on her 1970s landmark program "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." Throw in her dance career, both as a ballerina and then as a hoofer on Broadway and television (most notably in her own eponymous variety shows), and you have a consummate American star of stage and screen whose very name evokes excitement and love from anyone who hears it.

In GROWING UP AGAIN: Life, Loves, and Oh Yeah, Diabetes, Moore takes us on a tour of a very different part of her life, the one that she has been living for the last 40-plus years.

Three years after her turn as Laura Petrie, Moore found out she had type 1 diabetes. It was the year before she made her massive leap into the Television Hall of Fame with "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." This was not a performer who had time to spare, and yet, just as one of the busiest parts of her career was about to commence, she discovered that her life was going to change in significant and not-so-pleasant ways. Undergoing a D&C after a miscarriage, the doctors discovered she had juvenile diabetes, a strange occurrence since juveniles usually find out they have the disease, hence its name.

Clearly, she has "managed" this disease without affecting her ability to work, but I surmise that most people will find some of the stories contained in this book absolutely shocking, such as the fact that she was also "managing" as a working alcoholic at the same time.

There is an amazing honesty to Moore's recollections --- these are debilitating and difficult situations to retrieve, and her memories serve her very well, down to the last detail. When she writes about the way that her sicknesses have taken a toll on her, body and soul, she gives specifics. If you or someone you know is a diabetic, you will find this candid look at the real effects of diabetes to be a very valuable tome. If you are just a fan, you will find Moore's inimitable pluck intact, particularly when she talks about how her disease has gotten in the way of her performing. Her story about her eyesight failing at a party for John Travolta after the premiere of Hairspray is alarming. Who would've thought that someone like her, who seems so outwardly together and functioning, could have moments like these where she is almost blind and falling down in public?

Moore's tales of her alcoholism as well as her difficult marriages and her son's death due to drug abuse are all testaments as to why she can be called a "true survivor."

3-0 out of 5 stars Meandering Book That Needs More Moore
It's hard to tell what this book is supposed to be--it's a meandering mixture of remembrances from Moore's life mixed with her attempt to be a role model for diabetes sufferers.

I loved Mary Richards and liked Laura Petry. But I'm not so sure about MTM. She can be self-deprecating one minute (sharing her average IQ and 4th-grade level math skills) and bragging the next (claiming she never made a mistake on the Mary Tyler Moore Show so theynever had a clip of her to use in the gag reel!). She also assumes that you have read her previous book, alluding to stories or people that she doesn't explain (like her connection to David Letterman).

There just isn't enough insight into Mary Tyler Moore here--only 150 pages of text (followed by another 50 in appendixes). The stories are presented in a style like your grandma drifting from thought to unrelated thought. Some of it's interesting (her private visit with the pope) but other parts are only for those interested in diabetes. It is a bit frustrating to read and you end up unsure the point of it all. And in the end I like her less as a person than as a performer.

Product Description
She was America's darling: actress, producer, star of the golden age of television. Her work on The Dick Van Dyke Show and The Mary Tyler Moore Show garnered multiple Emmys, followed by critical acclaim for her acting on Broadway and in film. Now, in her witty, candid, heartbreaking autobiography, Mary Tyler Moore tells all, about...the Dick Van Dyke nobody knows...Elvis, her sly, seductive co-star in Change of Habit...how Carl Reiner taught her to cry while being funny...Robert Redford's confession after casting her in Ordinary People...about then-First Lady Betty Ford's inebriated debut on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and years later, her phone call that saved Mary's life.

Mary spares nothing as she recounts her traumatic childhood, two failed marriages, her own alcoholism, the tragic death of her son, and her third, happy marriage to a cardiologist eighteen years her junior. Moving, inspiring, and brutally frank, After All will touch every reader's heart and soul. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Well-Written Book By An Icon"
"After All" is the titled used for Mary Tyler Moore's autobiography taken from the theme song of her hit seventies sitcom. An informative read, Mary takes us on her life's journey growing up in Southern California to becoming one of the biggest television stars of all-time. She accounts her years on the "Dick Van Dyke Show" as Laura, Van Dyke's TV wife, to her attempt at becoming her own person in her very own TV series. She talks about how hard it was for the creators to come up with the "Mary Tyler Moore Show", her battle with scripts in the first year, and her subsequent disappointment when the series closed. She discusses her battle with diabetes, her divorce from Grant Tinker and her new marriage to a plastic surgeon, and most daring the time when her only son accidentally shot himself. "After All" is one of the best memoirs I have ever read and it's a splendid addition to anyone's home library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Bio
I enjoyed the autobio of Mary Tyler Moore. She doesn't gloss over anything in her life. She talks to us frankly, which I like. Any MTM fan or fan of the show would like this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars leaves one longing for "moore"
I read this book in a sitting, admittedly skimming certain parts.Although I am a big MTM fan, it whetted my appetite without satiating me...there is definitely a vague "arm's length" quality to this book noted by previous reviewers...MTMobviously suffered from a lack of connection with either of her parents as well as a lack of any kind of spiritual connection...I found the "vegetarian" chapter oddly placed and suspect readers might be more interested in how she keeps such an enviable physique. All that drinking and never a hangover, wow, what a charmed life...it was hard to picture squeaky clean Laura Petrie or Mary Richards smoking like a chimney, too.Although she states she's nothing like her TV characters, in the end the book made her seem a little one-dimensional,like a television actor.I still admire Ms Moore but I think some professional writing help would have greatly improved the quality of this work.True fans will probably enjoy it , but others should pass..

5-0 out of 5 stars a tell all book
Mary Tyler Moore displays a great talent for writing. She holds nothing back in her book, and is brutally honest.I can't imagine a person being more honest with themselves than she is in her autobiography.
It is a great read for all MTM fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars MARY
In "After All" Mary Tyler Moore writes openly about her
childhood, growing up in Brooklyn NY, then Hollywood. Her life
in showbusiness.Personal tragedy,loss,regrets and finally
being able to find the happiness within. You will feel her joys
and sorrows. You will laugh and you will cry.As I finished the
book this morning I felt I had lost my best friend.
Truly a remarkable book on a remarkable woman. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A Pallid Effort to Pay Tribute to a TV Classic
As the semester winds down and my required reading list for seminary begins to shrink, I usually treat myself to some non-academic books on subjects that interest me. That's why I picked up Love is All Around: The Making of the Mary Tyler Moore Show.

My wife and I are classic TV fans. We like old television shows, and one of our favorites is Mary Tyler Moore. The show originally ran from 1970-77 and featured some of the most memorable characters in television history.

First there's the all-American Mary Richards, trying to make it on her own as a single woman in her 30's in Minneapolis.

Then, there's her neighbor and friend, Rhoda Morgenstern, a fast-talking Jew from New York.

Phyllis Lindstrom, the landlord - a feminist trying to raise a child according to the newest books.

Lou Grant - Mary's boss at the low-rated TV station, WJM.

Ted Baxter - the clueless anchorman whose big ego leaves no room for a brain.

Murray Slaughter - the everyman news-writer, trying to stay above water and support a family.

Georgette Baxter - the ditsy, lovable woman who falls in love with Ted

Sue Ann Nivens - the man-crazy "happy homemaker"

Even the supporting cast is fantastic: Gordy the weatherman, Ida Morgenstern (Rhoda's guilt-inducing mother), and Mary's on-and-off boyfriend played by Jerry Van Dyke.

Mary Tyler Moore is a television treasure. If you haven't seen the "Chuckles Bites the Dust" episode (in which Chuckles the Clown goes to the circus dressed as a peanut and gets "shelled" by a rogue elephant), you have missed a hilarious part of our television history.

Unfortunately, Love is All Around is a rather bland book that seeks to celebrate The Mary Tyler Moore Show, but fails to adequately chronicle its history. The authors interviewed the writers and cast of the show and simply "copy-pasted" their responses into the text of the biography. There's hardly any authoring done in this book. At times, you forget who is speaking.

Furthermore, the authors are obsessed with the political dimensions of Mary Tyler Moore, seeking to write the history of this show as if it were a treatise on feminism. But even the quotes of the cast and crew diminish their thesis. "We weren't trying to make overt political statements, only capture the feeling of the period," they say. But the authors refuse to take "no" for an answer.

Any fan of Mary Tyler Moore will catch political overtones in some of the episodes, but often feminism is mocked (think - Phyllis) as much as it is celebrated. Mary Richards may have been independent, but she never sacrificed her "lady-like" behavior. This show's writers were brilliant in the way they averted the politicization of this show, all the while poking fun at all sides of the culture wars. Mary Tyler Moore was never like All in the Family, even if the authors of this book would have appreciated such a comparison.

If you like Mary Tyler Moore, buy the 4 seasons that have already been released on DVD. You'll enjoy them a lot more than this pallid effort to pay tribute to a television classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars a behind-the-scenes look at my favorite show
I am a SERIOUS _Mary Tyler Moore Show_ fan, and this book was on my wish list for years.Several months ago I bought it here on amazon from an independent dealer and was not disappointed.I loved reading about how the show was cast, directed, produced, and organized week-to-week.If you're not interested in the show, it's probably a 3 star book. But for fans?!Definitely worth having.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great bedtime ritual for my 4 year old granddaughter and me
I found this CD at a thrift store, and what a find it was!The actors' voices are so well-tuned into a child's way of thinking:cadence, choice of character voice, and emotion are wonderful throughout.Having grown up watching Bea Arthur, Mary Tyler Moore (my hero!) Lily Tomlin and Ed Asner, it can bring tears to imagine these people taking time to create such a fine piece of children's literature.I also have Paula Poundstone's POP TART comedy VHS, and her gentleness is obvious there also.I hope "Completely Yours" gets re-released, as my CD has finally cracked from loving use.

4-0 out of 5 stars Touching and Sweet
I liked the tape very much. My son who is 8 months old likes to listen to the different voices. I like that it has the voices I grew up with, Ed Asner, Bea Arthur, Lily and Mary. My favorite part is the song "Justthe Same" by Margaret Bailey. I would love to find more songs by her.My only regret is that it is so short (18 minutes). ... Read more

I enjoyed this book a great deal, having come to this book only knowing a little about her from an episode of Biography. This book covers the same stuff, namely the behind the scenes of the Mary Tyler Moore Show and it's development and ultimate cancellation, but the book also covers the earlier years: her childhood, The Dick Van Dyke Show, her couple of movies and attempt at theater. There's also a glimpse at her family life but doesn't go so into detail as to be invasive. ... Read more

I found this to be a very cozy and interesting book. I had not seen Eileen Heckart in many movies, but it didn't matter....the book is a good one, tells what it was like growing up with her as his mother, shows her looking more glamorous than I knew she could, and I felt like I'd been on a visit with his family and friends.

If you love Eileen Heckart, as I do, then you must read this book. Lots of in-depth info about her life and career. You really feel that you know the woman, after you read this. Plus you get some interesting info about her gay son.
Heckart was a great actress. I knew almost nothing about her life before I read this. It's a very enjoyable read, to boot.

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Mary Tyler Moore Hour was a television series broadcast by CBS in the spring of 1979. Like her first series, The Dick Van Dyke Show, Moore's eponymous sitcom, The Mary Tyler Moore Show (which ran for seven full seasons from 1970 to 1977), had been highly-rated, critically-acclaimed, and the recipient of many Emmy Awards. Her next effort, the variety series Mary, was such a disaster that CBS pulled it from its 1978 fall lineup after only three broadcasts. In The Mary Tyler Moore Hour, Moore attempted a blending of the two formats, the sitcoms at which she had triumphed and the variety hour at which she had totally failed. ... Read more

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Mary Tyler Moore Show is an American television sitcom created by James L. Brooks and Allan Burns that aired on CBS from September 19, 1970 to March 19, 1977. The program was a television breakthrough, with the first never-married, independent career woman as the central character. As Mary Richards, a single woman in her thirties, Moore presented a character different from other single TV women of the time. She was not widowed or divorced or seeking a man to support her. It has also been cited as "one of the most acclaimed television programs ever produced" in US television history. Over a seven-year period, it received high praise from critics and Emmy Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series three years in a row. The show continued to be honored long after the final episode aired. In 2003, USA Today called it "one of the best shows ever to air on TV". ... Read more
