... Read more

Product Description

More than a decade after his death, alienated, awkward, heavily eye-lined Kurt Cobain continues to sit front and center in the arena of popular culture, as the subject of books, music, fashion, gossip, and inspiration for major motion pictures and documentaries. Together with flannelsporting, music-obsessed communities emerging (in the late 1980s and early 1990s) from the chilly Pacific Northwest, Nirvana, Sound Garden, and Pearl Jam changed the scene with wild aggressive sounds and truly alternative records.
Author Thurston Moore (of Sonic Youth)—who introduced Kurt Cobain t David Geffen (Geffen Records), a meeting that resulted in Nirvana’s first major debut, Nevermind, in September 1991, which by December was selling 400,000 copies a week—writes about the discovery of Seattle punk youth, the seminal bands that defined the movement, the exploitation of the subculture, and the backlash of grunge, as well as the death of his longtime collaborator and intimate Cobain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
Took me right back - to the clubs - to the fuzzy, earringing after hours - to Belltown - to the 80s - to my wilder youth. Love, LOVE this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Husband loved the gift!
It was shipped on time and it arrived in good condition for Christmas. My husband really likes the book. The only down side was that it did not include any information or pictures of Alice in Chains and that is his favorite band. Besides that, he loved it.

2-0 out of 5 stars A wrong book cover
To be quite honest, I was really dissapointed when I got this book. Everywhere you read about on the net was calling this book a great retrospective with almost astonishing material you would'nt find anywhere else (if they meant the few bands shots, that's kind of correct)

The book, mostly, comes with pictures from thousands of nobodies-wannabe-punk-rock-stars and only a few pictures from the bands that were important for the Seattle movement and that's truly sad cause Michael lavine has a huge collection of pics from Seattle bands, or at least from the so-called "alternative era"

Anyways, for those who like staring at beatiful B & W pictures the books makes it. I like B & W pics, but again Mr. Lavine's music works will never be as interesting as Charles Peterson's, He's the guy you should be into if you are infatuated with Grunge.

The hardcover, and the whole desing of the book is quite good, pictures are also very good, but considering the little amount of "Grunge Bands" on it, the book title would've been better known as "Seattle 80's underground" but iget that "Grunge" nowadays is a business word for those with enough age to have a regular job.

4-0 out of 5 stars An intimate look into more than just Grunge.
If there's one thing I learned from this book, it's that Michael Lavine sure gets around. The first half of the photos in this book actually document his encounters with random gutter punks in the streets of 1983 Seattle. The next half jumps straight ahead to 1987-1993 where he's moved to New York and is snapping promo photos and album art for many familiar bands. It's a somewhat awkward transition that caught me off guard, but still proves to be a very interesting contrast.

Thurston Moore's contribution isn't much, but it introduces the setup well enough.

If you have any interest whatsoever in 80's punk/alternative/grunge, I'd say this is definitely worth a look.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
The photography of Michael Lavine is poignant and intriguing. He takes us back in history and clarifies our mind's fading pictures. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read
This is one of the best book on the symbol of the far leftism in America. It reveals the truth like no other book. I enjoyed reading this because it helped me understand the Michael Moore phenomenon and the lies behind this fat guy who thinks he is the only man who sees stuff the right way. Michael Moore is a clueless shameful American.

5-0 out of 5 stars The truth Provaled!
This book answered the questions that Michael left unanswered. Why did he leave them unanswered? Because they faulted his arguments. Michael splices and edits interviews, news reports, and newspapers. Creates COMPLETELY false ads claiming the candidates for president at the time were running them on national tv. This book goes back as far as "Rodger and Me" to explain how Michael had no problem stabbing Rodger (spokesmen for GM at the time) in the back to make millions off of him. "we were friends" explained Rodger. This books shows that Michael can not be trusted. Even if you are the farthest left winger in this country, that Moore is not on your side. Claiming that Americans are idiots and deserved 9-11. and the day after 9-11 was mad because the terrorists attacked the wrong part of the country "should have hit the white house or in texas, the highest republican dominate states" and bumped and forced him to edit his book that was to release 9-12. Michael is not a good American and this book explains all his flaws not only in his books and movies but also through out his life. Great book. Would recommend to EVERYONE even if you like Michael, keep an open mind and read the book. Even the authors of the book read and watched Moore's documentary's.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a stunning expose, but interesting
This book is probably only read by those of use who do not care for Mr. Moore and his underhanded tactics. It is an interesting read as to some of his background.Given that he didn't have a particularly harsh childhood, why does Michael have such a distaste for so much of the American way?But then, how many people create documentaries and put themselves in the middle of every scene possible?

3-0 out of 5 stars GOOD INTENTIONS, BUT PLAYS MIKE'S GAME, TOO
While I'm glad the liberal sacred cow of Michael Moore has been brought down a peg or two, and that his dishonesty is laid bare. BUT; this book does a better job of attacking for attack's sake than it does rebutting Moore's manipulative tactics.

While the world needs a satirical & balanced view (from both sides) of politics, geopolitics and economics, unfortunately all this genre is doing now is escalating an arms-race of attack-dog polemics. Should we now spend more time attacking the messengers than the messages themselves? Reality check: Surely I'm not THAT naive...?

5-0 out of 5 stars Michael Moron
I loved this book. From the moment I picked it up, I didn't put it down. I'm 18 years old, I live in Australia. I am aware of everything that is going on in the world, including Michael Moore's hate of America. The USA is a wonderful country, and Moore is just putting it in a bad light for the rest of the world to see. It shows the world how one man can have such hatred for his home country. It really is very unfortunate. I'm glad this book finally put his lies out for the world to see. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Christmas Tradition for many years
I bought this book for our children when they were very little. It was a tradition every Christmas eve we would read this book than we would read the Christmas story in the bible. They were very good at taking turns with pull tabs and they were so gentle the book is in pretty good condition. It isn't in perfect condition because they loved the book so much. A childrens book should never be in perfect condition if it is their favorite. It was so much fun when they asked if they could go get the book in the special place we kept it. That is one of my favorite memories because we did this as a family. The 4 of us would sit on the floor and it would be late at night and we looked forward to it all day long.Than Santa would get his cookies and milk and off to bed they would go. Not to sleep much although they tried very hard not to get up too early.
I recommend this book for all the young at heart and beyond. For me I was always fascinated with pop-up books when I was a child and still they make me happy.
My husband and I will be buying a book for each of our children and their spouses when the time comes to have our grandchildren so they are able to make their own memories.

Product Description
Set in southern California during Reagan’s 1980s, Michael Scott Moore’s first novel follows the exploits of two teenage boys: Eric, an intelligent, thoughtful, socially restless honors student, and Tom, a defiant, posturing rebel, with a Clockwork Orange complex and a taste for cocaine and cowboy hats. Fifteen years after his ostensibly accidental death at the hands of Tom, Eric narrates the story of his last few months on earth. He believes he is a nefesh, a restless Jewish ghost that wanders the earth until put at ease, and he ultimately realizes that in order to find peace he must reconcile his resentment and vengefulness with his own enduring incredulousness over his premature death. This humorous, honest, and, at times, heartbreaking book introduces a new city to the atlas of imaginary American towns. Moore’s Calaveras Beach is a microcosm of L.A.’s protean pop culture, where Rasta beach bums, trust-fund gutter punks, and Nicaraguan drug lords weave in and out of the lives of grieving hausfraus, pitiable driver’s-ed instructors, and awkward adolescents. All mix seamlessly in this enjoyable debut novel about the confusion and frustration we face while coming of age, and the fears and apprehensions that may persist well after death. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars no kidding
this is one rare book. how many coming of age stories still ring with truth and heart without getting smarmy? too much of nothing is how kids, many kids feel.
and the trauma of teen-hood is a weapon wielded into the later years. mr. moore is a beautiful writer. READ THIS BOOK!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Shallow Look on Being Naive
This book centers on the major theme of individuality and conformity. Though it could be argued that since both characters were destroyed because of their need to be individuals, I believe there is a different point behind it all. In several instances, these boys try and find the hypocritical people in society. They hate a certain gang at school for their bully persona to only emulate that themselves. Their mentor talks about going against the man and capitalism, when he himself came from a very rich capitalist background and benefits from it.

This is a somewhat dark novel that shows the shallowness of several characters. All the characters are dynamic and go through several changes. The book was truly gripping in its delivery and style; I read the book in one setting because of not being able to put it down. I did not grow up around such conditions while going through high school, but since I am not that far removed from the environment, I related to this book fairly well. A good book that is worth a look

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Darn Good
The author of this book is not trying to say "non-conformism" is a dangerous thing" (see below). The novel is a subtle satire on American counterculture; it shows how some people who talk the loudest about individualism and freedom don't know the first thing about either one. I thought it was dark and funny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Looking Rorward to His Next Work
Since finishing the book, it has been in my thoughts frequently; it is a gauge against which I compare my own experiences growing up with the characters Moore has created. The author and I grew up in the same area, only a couple of years apart; we attended the same highschool for a couple of overlapping years, and a number of the locations he has so successfully described in the abstract are readily identifiable as "real" locations in our hometown. The imagery that he manages to pull up elicits a gut level comprehension of the Los Angeles climate. Los Angeles is constantly buzzing with activity, a proof of the converse of the adage "still waters run deep." The surface buzz of Los Angeles is sizable, its populace constantly vibrating on the edge of the now and the next, but with limited consideration for what comes after "next," or the past. Los Angeles isn't so much "sunny" as in a state of constant "glare." The sky isn't blue, nor is it often brown with smog; it's usually a matte silver tone -- a color that tends to simply amplify the sun's natural brightness to a dizzying shine that makes things stand out intensely. But over time that glare damages that which it shines upon, simply by its own intensity. Moore's novel is like that as well. As clearly as it depicts the world we lived in, it also has worn some of the polish from it.

With regard to another review that posits that deviation from the norm is what leads to the death of the main character, I read it as the reverse: Eric is brought down because of a critically mistimed attempt at bald honesty. It has less to do with conformity than a lack of emotional tools in youth to deal with difficult situations, or to reason out their consequences.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rebels Without A Clue
In response to Jaydekitten's comments, I do not believe that Mr. Moore was conveying a message intended to discourage non-conformist thought and behavior. In point of fact - and his book amply demonstrates this - most teens (of any generation) lack the empirical life knowledge, the bumps and bruises and contusions that the adult experience delivers, to make a considered choice and proclaim "I don't want to be a part of that." They are still evolving as humans.

Consider, for instance, the video tape released last year of Columbine killers Klebold and Harris taking the day off for a little target practice in the woods near their suburban Colorado home. There is a smug arrogance about the duo, a simmering hatred of everything and everybody who doesn't respect their self-entitled right to be "different", that is so undeserved. Simply put, these are kids who couldn't accept and adjust to the amplified traumas and social blunders of high school, for cyin' out loud, so how were they ever to adapt to the "real world"? From my point of view, what we witness with Eric and Tom and Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold is harsh Darwinian theory in action, the universe, if you will, stepping in and straightening out a couple of design flaws; unfortunately and tragically, a few innocents usually get taken out of line in the process. ... Product Description

Authors Robin Moore and Michael Lennon team up in this exciting new novel to tell the “fictionalized” stories of the men who have risked it all for the U.S.A.: the Green Berets.  They take us from firefights on the Cambodian border during the Vietnam War to the streets and alleyways of Iraq today. They teach us what it was really like to patrol the streets of Mogadishu in the days of Black Hawk Down. They show the horror that was Saddam’s Iraq during the first Gulf War. They take us to the moonscape that is Afghanistan in search of the Taliban. The Wars of the Green Berets continues the saga of Moore’s classic The Green Berets, revealing more than a few tantalizing secrets and anecdotes for the first time.

2-0 out of 5 stars "Pay Attention to Details"
As for incorrect jump commands, incorrect helicopter (Ch-47 instead of a Ch-46), the misspelling of the town next to Columbus, Georgia (it's Phenix City), it is an OK read. "Doc" Lennon should get his head out of his "fourth point" of contact. Journalism 101.

5-0 out of 5 stars Present Day Adventures of the Special Forces
This long overdue book by the bestselling author of "The Green Berets" and "The French Connection" continues his chronicling of Special Forces operations. Naturally there are adventures from the Vietnam War but the book also covers the stories of a new generation of Green Berets with reports from the Gulf War, our involvement in Somalia as well as stories based on current Special Forces missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. The book is written in a gritty realistic style and is extremely difficult to put down. As always Mr. Moore writes with a great admiration for the men of the Special Forces which can only be expected from the only civilian to go through the Special Forces Qualification Course. Each chapter shows the efforts of the Special Forces to preserve and advance freedom and often points out forgotten facts. For example the capture in Baghdad of Mohammed Abu Abbas, the mastermind of the Achille Lauro hijacking which is obvious proof that Saddam Hussein was harboring some terrorists. Any student of modern military history or unconventional warfare will enjoy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant story of the U.S army 1970-2003
In this well told story the stories of the heroic Green Berets, the Special Forces, are intimately told through the eyes of one who was there. The book examines five conflicts through the eyes, ears and stories of five men. This is a historical novel, which means it is based on true events but some of the dialogue is injected to make the story more human.Michael Lennon, one of the authors, is a veteran of Special Operations, where he served as a staff officer.
The story begins with Mike Apin's tour in Vietnam with the Special Forces in the Central Highlands, eventually fighting in the battle of Dak Pek.Mike arrives in 1970, post-Tet Vietnam and he experiences the low moral and discrimination against Special Forces inherent at the time.He becomes acquainted with the ARVN and the Montagnard(Yards) and Chinese(Nungs) minorities who served alongside the Special Forces.
Book two surrounds the story of Chuck Rogers in the Gulf war in 1991. He arrived at the tail end of the 82nd airborne deployment, the `speed bump' set up to stop Saddam from invading Saudi Arabia. When the coalition moved into Kuwait he found himself along Highway 8 and eventually in the battle for Tallil airbase, where Iraqi forces put up tough resistance. The story also follows Kemal Mohammed and his life as an Iraqi ex-pat in the U.S and eventually in Saddam's army fighting opposite Rogers.
Book three examines the Somalia operation in 1993, Ryan Gallagher and the 10th Mountain Division.Having missed Desert Storm, Ryan arrived in Somalia on July 29th.In the first days of October a Black Hawk helicopter was shot down, the famous `Black hawk Down' and the 10th Mountain, with Gallagher in the lead, was ordered to relieve the rangers stuck in Mogadishu.
Book four, the most interesting book, examines the fighting in Afghanistan in 2001 as the stories of Gallagher, Rogers and Apin all come together in Special Ops in Afghanistan against the Taliban, working with the Northern Alliance.
The last section examines the Second Gulf War in 2003 and gives some background on Delta Force and its founder, Colonel Beckwith.Special Forces operated in Western Iraq during the war, behind enemy lines. This chapter is a summing up, examining Mike Apin's experience in 2003 and the ensuing problems of the occupation of Iraq and his prescient views that it could be `another Vietnam' and that valuable assets were being taken from the Afghan war.A well written, thoughtful and informative book, action packed and very insightful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fresh and honest view of US military engagements
The soldiers of the US military are unquestionably the most highly trained, motivated, technically advanced and dedicated fighting force in the history of mankind. But within the armed forces there exists a group of individuals who are the elite; the best of the best. The Special Forces. These are the men and women that that push themselves to the brink of physical and mental failure, take on the dirtiest and most dangerous jobs, receive no credit when the job is well done, and much of the criticism when things go wrong.

This book takes you on an awe inspiring high speed adventure through a half century of Special Forces engagements. Although a work of fiction, is undoubtedly based very closely on real life events and situations.Keep that in mind as you read it.This is a book full of situations you'll want to tell people about. It also shows that people who are trained to kill are perfectly capable of acts of kindness even in the midsts of very difficult conflict.

I really enjoyed the quotes that start each chapter, and the various snippets of military and political history that are presented really add to the stories. The only thing bad about this book is that it isn't three times as long. ... Read more

Product Description
There are few Americans who would not recognize Charles Moore's most famous photographs. His images of the civil rights movement have become, and remain today, internationally known icons - vivid, scaring portraits of pivotal moments in the struggle for racial equality in the American South. This chronological collection of Moore's most compelling and dramatic images, taken as the movement progressed through Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Georgia, highlights activity from 1958 to 1965. Included are the iconic scenes of black protestors huddled in a doorway to escape the crippling blasts of fire hoses in Birmingham; a white bigot swinging a baseball bat seconds before cracking it on the head of a black woman during the desegregation of the Capitol Cafeteria in Montgomery; a young and stunned Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. pinned to the counter of a police precinct, his arm twisted behind his back; the devastating aftermath of "Bloody Sunday" on the Edmund Pertus Bridge in Selma; and Bull Connor's police dogs tearing mercilessly at the legs of a protestor in downtown Birmingham.Celebrity protestors - comedian Dick Gregory, poet Galway Kinnell, singers Joan Baez, Mary Travers, Pete Seeger, and Harry Bellafonte, actor Pernell Roberts, and writer James Baldwin - are featured alongside the many nameless but committed participants and the recognized major leaders of the movement. Powerful Days was first published in hardcover in 1991. This new paperback edition will make these famous images, so etched in the memory of those who lived through the social changes of the 1960s, available again to enlighten a younger generation eager to know more about the national struggle that overthrew Jim Crow. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Indeed
As per the title of the book, powerful photographs indeed of events during the Civil Rights era - riots at Oxford in Mississippi, Birmingham demonstrations, voter registration in Mississippi. It is definitely photojournalism at it's most prosaic. It also illustrates the power of photos as these were scene around the world.

The Civil Rights era used journalists to advertise this most righteous of causes. It would have been nice if there had been more text by the photographer himself - on his personal thoughts as these photos were being taken.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Days:The Civil Rights Photography of Charles Moore
This was a purchase of a second-hand book of photography which is out of print. The book was represented to be in good condition and when I rec'd it, I was exceptionally pleased.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timely, and in good condition...
This is a classic book of black & white photographs of highly-charged, historic moments of the Civil Rights struggle. Since Charles Moore died recently, I chose this book as a gift to a friend who was retiring and had been involved in the Civil Rights Movement. He was delighted. The book was in perfect condition except for the library pocket. I wonder why ANY library would want to get rid of it! Bad move! My gain!

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Days brings powerful images
Charles Moore was there. He witnessed the events of Selma, Birmingham, and Montgomery. His camera captures the struggle at close range, in all its glory, drama, and tragedy. Charles Moore does a fantastic job of showing how the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s was a series of historic events that took place throughout the South, connected by common themes: justice, fairness, humanity, dignity, and ultimately...love.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning photographs--as history and art
It's great to see this book back in print!Moore was one of the most famous photographers of the civil rights movement, and chronicled the people and events in images that have become iconic-- from the exhausted, wounded US marshall assigned to protect James Meredith to the brutality of Birmingham to the quiet pride of the voter registration efforts. The book presents Moore's black-and-white photos in gorgeous, sharp, usually full-page view (some, however, cross the page), and he had an unbelievable talent for catching the expressions and individual moments that really make this history come alive. These photos are works of art as well as historical documents, sometimes difficult to look at, but unforgettable.A very good introduction gives Moore's own words describing some of his experiences with the movement, and clear captions place each picture in historical context. This is a book I've found myself returning to over and over again; I can't imagine anyone interested in the civil rights movement or photojournalism who would regret buying it. ... Product Description
An anniversary is a reason to celebrate, and when on September 21st 2006, Belize commemorated its first 25 years as a new nation, Belizeans indeed rejoiced. In this collection, the first of two volumes, distinguished economists, conservationists, lawyers, sociologists, and other scholars all longtime observers of Belize and its people take stock. In most cases they present, for the first time ever, essays that focus on Belize, a country that is at once deceptively uncomplicated yet surprisingly complex. The essays, which reflect on what brought Belize to this point, are eminently readable, but provocative and challenging. The authors' in-dept analysis and evaluation of data, policies, laws, and practices from the economic, environmental, societal, and cultural sectors are just the beginning. Policy-makers, decision-makers, stake holders, and concerned citizens are beckoned to use the essays to assess and evaluate the authors' findings, appraise the current status of the country, and examine its proposals, initiatives, challenges, and promises, mindful of what has transpired and what the country and its people will face in the next quarter century. The essays are a bid for independence - independent thinking, analysis, and evaluation. All who know and study Belize will value this fourth contribution to The Belize Collection. ... Read more
