Product Description

From the saint to maverick to James Bond, Roger Moore’s story is one of the last of the classic Hollywood lives as yet untold.

Until now.

One of the most recognizable big-screen stars of the past half century, Sir Roger Moore played the role of James Bond longer than any other actor. Still, Bond was only one in a lifetime of roles stretching back to Hollywood’s studio era. Moore has seen and heard it all. He has hobnobbed with the glamorous and powerful, counting Elizabeth Taylor, Jane Seymour, and Cary Grant among his contemporaries and friends. He has outrageous stories about foulmouthed Milton Berle, surly Richard Burton, and kindhearted Richard Kiel, infamous as Bond enemy Jaws. The stories in My Word Is My Bond are priceless, a treasure trove of Hollywood history. Sir Roger Moore has left nothing out—especially the naughty bits.

5-0 out of 5 stars Live and Let Live!
Roger Moore was my 007 when I was growing up and I really enjoyed reading his autobiography!!It is full of fun stories that show his great personality and how much he cares about other people, including the children he helps through all of his great work with UNICEF.He is a real ambassador for that charity and it's great to read his stories.I gave the book 5 stars because I really like Roger Moore but I think the book could have been better. There's not enough about the James Bond movies and that is really why I wanted the book so bad. Also, though he opens up about his life, I was still surprised to read that he separated and then divorced his wife. Not much was said about it and there wasn't much warning.I guess that's a subject that he didn't want to talk too much about and I can't blame him.Who would? It was nice reading about Bernie Lee (M) and Desmond Llewelyn (Q) and how much fun he had working with them. Also, he has nice words and stories about Cubby Broccoli and David Niven.I can't get over how many people Roger Moore knows! This is a lesson about how to win friends because Roger Moore has tons of them!I highly recommend reading Roger Moore's book!

4-0 out of 5 stars One hundred words on an enjoyable, colorful memoir
Roger Moore's show business memoir, "My Word Is My Bond", is a decent reading experience, not spectacularly entertaining but never less than pleasantly engaging. If all you're interested in is James Bond, however, you'll be disappointed, as the Bond years cover somewhere between a quarter and a third of the book's total page count. But the Bond anecdotes aren't the only compelling elements here. Sir Roger's tales of his TV years, theatre work, many other movies, private life, and philanthropic work (in particular, his admirable dedication to UNICEF), also do a good enough job in keeping one turning the pages.

4-0 out of 5 stars I devoured this book.
I devoured this book as soon as I bought it. Roger Moore is my favorite Bond. I have the complete Saint series on DVD and I really enjoy his work. I enjoyed reading this book and especially reading how he got started in acting and his remberances about being on the set. I was sorry to hear that his experience of the Van Damme film, one of his later roles, was not a good one. He was obviously very unhappy about working on that film and was uncharacteristically harsh in his comments on Van Damme himself. The best parts of the book is when he relates his early years and his work on his films. I learned quite a lot about Moore in this book and it is a worth while read for any fan. He corrected some errors that were reported about himover the years by the media and he told about his rather large involvement in charitable works. His later talk concerning his humanitarian efforts kind of bogs down a bit, but it is obviously very important to him and is a much more important contribution to society than is his acting work. I liked this book and recommend it to fans of Roger Moore and people who are interested in acting.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Saint and an Appreciative Bond
Reason for Reading: Roger Moore is the Bond I grew up with, the one I went to the movies to see as a teenager.

Comments: Right from the introduction Mr. Moore states that he will not be 'dirt-dishing' nor telling 'tittle tattle'; he wants to write a fun book filled with memories the way he saw them and the wonderful people he met in his life but he promises that does not mean it will be a 'fluffy book' either. Roger Moore lives up to this statement giving the reader a very enjoyable look inside his life without trashing anyone. He does mention a couple of names that he simply hates with a straightforward reason why, he tells stories leaving the irritating one unnamed and he mentions names and follows the "if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all rule" frequently. But Roger Moore is a charming fellow, very easy going, loves a prank or two, and can take a joke on himself as well so his book is filled with people he adored and those who adored him back.

Moore spends a good part of the book on his early life in England; his childhood, days in the army, acting on stage, becoming an actor in British movies. This was all very interesting and it's hard to believe that Roger Moore is really that old to have been in WWII! Even when acting in Britain the famous names start knocking about such as David Niven (a lifetime friend) and Michael Caine. Then he comes to America and makes a name for himself on the small screen starring in Maverick (replacing James Garner as his British cousin), then his famous Simon Templar as The Saint and finally The Persuaders with Tony Curtis. Not until we are closing in on page 200 does Roger Moore get to James Bond and the book has been so interesting up to this point that Bond is not the vital part of the book. Even if you started to read the because of the Bond connection. I won't go into any more details but from their Moore continues on with Bond, his wives, his other movies and work, ending finally with his long association with UNICEF.

Moore comes across just as I had expected him too. He keeps his debonair, suave, gentlemanly air about him but he also has his tongue firmly planted in cheek at the same time. Even as a child he behaved this way, he calls himself on it frequently saying "ever the poseur". He tells some wonderful memories and anecdotes as he's been with all the greats throughout his career: Elizabeth Taylor, Cary Grant, Gregory Peck, Noel Coward, Stewart Granger, Richard Burton and countless others.

The only thing I didn't enjoy about the book was the last few chapters which mostly focused pretty heavily on his UNICEF activities that it began to feel like an infomercial. I will state I don't support UNICEF for conscience reasons but I did enjoy hearing of the travel and good work he accomplished. But then it just seriously devolved into three chapters about UNICEF with Roger as the emcee. Otherwise, I had a very enjoyable read and certainly learned a lot more about the man who I previously only knew as The Saint and James Bond.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Very Human Experience
Sir Roger Moore, perhaps best known as one of the assorted James Bonds, turns in a rather self-deprecating account of his life.Along the way from birth till publication, Moore tells of various hospitalizations, his professional growth from a clothing ad model to one of the most recognizable actors in the entire world, a handful of marriages and a spattering of colorful anecdotes of friends and colleagues along the way.Fans of Moore's aren't terribly likely to learn a lot of revelatory insights, as most of this has been fairly common knowledge for some time.

To be honest, I was somewhat disappointed because many of the anecdotal passages were shared during his frequently off-topic audio commentary tracks for his seven Bond outings on their most recent DVD issue.Of course, having already literally heard these tales in Moore's own voice made it even easier to hear him narrating whole passages at a time while reading the printed page.In fact, the entire thing smacks of Moore's speaking voice and reads fairly effortlessly. The only genuine complaint I would register concerns the plethora of run-on sentences; sometimes whole paragraphs have a singular period and a host of commas where others ought to have been.

The final chapters concern Moore's involvement with UNICEF, and the content breaks dramatically from the ego-clashes of movie stars that permeates the remainder of My Word Is My Bond.Even already being familiar with the kinds of cruelties and hardships endured by countless children across the world, they never fail to rattle me each time I hear of them. There are some genuinely disturbing things Moore shares with his readers, and this is in keeping with how he has approached his role with UNICEF.People may not be excited to discuss the plight of children, but they are drawn to the celebrity of James Bond.Moore has openly traded on his celebrity to draw much-deserved attention to the cause, and it comes as no surprise he would structure his memoir accordingly. ... Product Description
The quintessential suave hero, Roger Moore has had an extraordinary career that has spanned seven decades, from early television to the golden age of Hollywood and on to international superstardom. Dashing, handsome and every inch the archetypal English gentleman, he is unforgettable as The Saint, as Lord Brett Sinclair in "The Persuaders!" and, of course, as James Bond, making seven blockbusting films as arguably the most debonair of the 007s. For the first time, Roger shares his recollections of playing some of the world's most famous roles alongside a host of legendary stars. It features myriad stories from his personal life - from his childhood in London and experiences during the Second World War, to the happy and turbulent times in his later life. Along with anecdotes about his encounters with the stars and his wonderful memories from the heyday of Hollywood, "My Word is My Bond" is as frank, funny and disarmingly charming as the legend himself. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Hello Mr. Bond
An engaging read about Roger Moore and his childhood in London, dodging the Blitz. He visited the hospital several times. Spent time in Hollywood in the '50's and '60's. He shares a sad tale how a couple had to go about to get a divorce, he has been married four times.
He starred in 'The Saint' 'The Persuaders' then... became Mr. Bond, my favorite one. He talks about 'The Spy Who Loved Me' 'Moonraker' 'For Your Eyes Only'and View to a Kill', his time with Grace Jones and more.
In his later years he has worked with UNICEF for the betterment of society. Nobel I think. ... Read more

Product Description
Sir John Moore organized and trained the British light infantry during the Napoleonic wars, and thus is regarded as the father of all subsequent British special warfare units. Moore's service also included general command in the field, most notably during the retreat to Corunna in 1809, a campaign that cost him his life.

This biography is the first to draw on papers in the archives ofthe Dukes of Hamilton and Argyll which shed new light on Moore'supbringing and the shaping of his revolutionary approach to the artand science of warfare. The author has also done extensive research inSpanish archives and on the Spanish terrain where Moore fought hislast campaign. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A highly unreliable biography
Despite the claims made for this biography there is hardly any new material in it. It is based mainly on the memoir of Moore by his brother, the 1923 edition of Moore's letters, and the 1904 edition of his Journal (i.e. not the original documents).

It is chock-full of inaccuracies, right from Page 2 where the author confuses Moore's father with his grandfather. Some are small - a sloop is called a frigate, a wainscot wall is described as "lath and plaster" and so on. But others are serious, such as the author's assertion (a key point in his assessment of Moore's character) that Moore may never have killed anyone himself. This is nonsense; both Moore's diary and his brother's memoir describe him doing just that. Day also describes an occasion when Moore's ship was attacked by a privateer, which he says had "most of its crew shot to pieces" as Moore's shipmates fought back. But the source says clearly that the privateer didn't attack but sailed away instead. The stirring battle Day describes is wholly imaginary.

The book is full of passages in quotation marks, but many are inaccurate, some of them so much so that they are only paraphrases of the original quotations.

Weirdest of all - although the author and the publisher's blurb both stress Moore's importance as a trainer of troops - his most important contribution to British military history, the creation of the British Light Infantry arm at Shorncliffe, just isn't in the book at all. The book simply leaves out the years in which Moore worked on his greatest achievement, skipping without comment straight from November 1802 to August 1806. So if you don't already know why Moore is important to the British Army, you won't find out from this book. Bizarre.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Biography of a Military Leader
This new title by Roger Day, `The Life of Sir John Moore' provides the reader with an interesting view of a man who the author categorizes as "the classic tragic British hero". This is the first biography I have read of Sir John Moore although I have come across him in many previous books. The author's view of Sir John Moore differs from many other accounts, the most recent being in `The Peninsular War' by Charles Esdaile.

Regardless of these differences I found that the author's biography of Sir John Moore was well presented and a delight to read. His campaigns were covered in enough detail to allow the reader to form an opinion on the man and his achievements. The narrative runs to only 220 pages so it could not be considered an exhaustive study but more of a general overview of the man and his times. According to the publishers much of the primary research material has previously not been utilized.

Upon finishing the book I felt that Sir John Moore was a brave man who actually felt some responsibility towards his troops welfare and did all in his power as a leader to ensure that they were well looked after and used in an intelligent manner. At times it appeared that these concerns and his forward thinking, taking in the `bigger picture', did not sit well with both his superiors and politicians in London nor with some of his subordinates.

Once again I was amazed and disgusted to read of the political backstabbing and cover-ups conducted by some of the politicians at the time. This appears to be a constant thread throughout history, the soldiers doing the dirty work while the politicians find some way of appearing to be squeaky clean when things go wrong. Overall this is an enjoyable book and should find acceptance with those who have read little on the subject, a good primer for further reading. ... Read more

Product Description

Most famous as suave sleuth Simon Templar in the 1960s, Roger Moore hung up his halo and in 1973 stepped into the shoes of James Bond 007 for a blockbusting seven adventures—making him one of the most recognizable faces in the world. His wicked sense of humor and raised eyebrow have endeared him to both peers and fans alike. Authors Gareth Owen and Oliver Bayan offer the full story of his films and career, punctuated with memories and anecdotes from the man himself. With almost 100 rare photographs, including many from Moore's own collection, Roger Moore: His Films and Career offers an insight into the world of the intensely private actor and tireless charity worker.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good and interesting book
For Roger Moore buffs, this book is a must. Clear, ample information about his career and his filmography. Maybe it lacks some additional titbits about his personal life, but the title of the book is very clear about it: "His films and career" ergo, no yellow press uncovering or sensationalist data.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sir Roger Moore's biography could not be written better.
As a biography it almost certainly could not have been co written better by Roger's personal assistance Gareth Owen and also . Exceptionally interesting informative entertaining biography of this unique most English and successful of actorswho played The Saint, 007 and many more roles and not to be missed. Obviously to some degree I will be biased being Sir Roger Moore's Web manager but I shall try to express my true opinion.

My favourite reading material is auto-biographies so I would honestly say this being a biography not quite in same class of entertainment for me.As the title suggests (Roger Moore His Films and Career) it delves not too much into Sir Roger's personal life but focuses mostly on his career. It spans Roger's entire life from his early childhood in London all the way through his extensive acting career to his present day work as a UNICEF ambassador. The most admirable quality Roger possesses is to give pleasure to everyone who has been lucky enough to be part of his life irrespective of their position in life. And over the last 13 years to spend 50% of his waking hours working for UNICEF. A better role model in life will be how to find. Read it you will enjoy.

I recommend The Pinewood Story also by Gareth Owen a fascinating factual book about the history of one the world's most famous studio

Product Description
This book is based on an exhibition of Henry Moore's work held at the Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation Museum of Contemporary Art on the Greek island of Andros. The aim of the exhibition is to enable the visitor-viewer-reader to appreciate the full extent to which Moore's work has affinities with the art of ancient Greece, and to gain an awareness of the many influences, both apparent and less obvious, it exercised upon the sculptor. Evidence for such influences is well documented in Professor Roger Cardinal's erudite and inspired essay on Moore, which supports and substantiates the exhibition. Moore was present at the 1951 Zappeion Hall exhibition in Athens and, according to witnesses, he appeared dazzled by the Greek light and the ancient monuments. The majority of the works on display and which are illustrated in full in the book come from the Henry Moore Foundation at Perry Green. The illustrations cover both works of sculpture as well as drawings including some of the seminal pictures of people sheltering in the London underground during the Second World War. The book is extensively illustrated with archival photos of Henry Moore throughout his career. ... Read more

This Collection consists of 30 images, which were created in mid-October, 1999 – when William B. Sechrest and I explored the Big Sur, Carmel, Carmel Valley, and Monterey areas of California.Bill guided me through those areas that have been dear to him and to his family for many years … I simply made photographs as I was moved by the special qualities of this beautiful area.

This book is a product of that magical experience.

In addition to this book, individual Limited Edition Prints are available for each of these 30 images -- in three sizes:large, medium, and small. The images were originally created on Kodak T-Max 100 film using either the Toyo 45AX Field camera, or the Noblex Panoramic camera. The film was then drum scanned to produce high-resolution digital files.I then manipulated the images in my “digital darkroom” (A Dell Precision 410 Workstation with one Gigabyte of RAM, Photoshop 5.5).The final Limited Edition Prints are produced as Gicle’e prints on Somerset Velvet Watercolor paper using the Quad-Black Iris process, which is archival in excess of 150 years. These Prints are available through many galleries in several states. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Love and Nature
Through his discerning eyes Roger's penetrating photographs reveal the richness of nature along the Carmel, Big Sur and Monterey Coasts and opens our eyes to our own backyards.A photographer who shows the soul of rocks, trees, leaves, caves, ocean, sand and sky. Bill's words call the soul of the world, drawing us into a fullness of life's emotions, triggering our own losses and hope and wonder...then reminds us of the gift of each moment through sound, sight and feelings.A poet with the courage to bare his soul and in so doing awakens our. These photographs and poetry bring the universe to our doorsteps. A treasure book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rest for a soul
Moor's Photographs are fresh and modern. I highly enjoyed it and recomend it to everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Living art
Art should provoke response, should inspire action in kind. This book delivers a moving example of just that: photographer inspiring poet, poet guiding the artist's eye. Moore's captivating images are, on one level, a beautiful rendering of Monterey's allure. But like Sechrest, I see something else, something profoundly emotional, which Moore achieves straightforwardly, without artifice or manipulation. Be sure to share this book with your most insightful friends and enjoy their responses.

TIP: as the book's designer, I happen to know Moore will be publishing another remarkable book of southern Russian images in the near feature. Keep a lookout - Moore is definitely on a roll.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting....fresh...visions
Moore's photographs of Carmel, the Texas Panhandle, New York and all of his photography is breathtaking. These images come in to your mind, your heart and you can feel as one with them. Perhaps places you have never been and yet feel as if you have due to Moore's balance of nature's beauty and his extreme talent.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful gift...
Recently, I was given a copy of this book as a gift, and was immediately struck by the beauty and thoughtful compositions of both the images and the poetry.

The photographs are of the California coast, but they are certainly not the typical "postcard" shots. In black and white, and rich in tonality, these are complicated images, some of whose beausty strikes you immediately, and some of whose beauty sneaks up on you. Seemingly simple scenes resonate with hidden complexity brought to light by the masterful eye of the photographer.Like zen style ink paintings, many of the images and poems are deceptively simple at first glance, but gain depth and meaning with careful appreciation. Honest and thoughtful, almost meditative, as the title suggests, this book works on a level that is fundamental. Highly recommended... ... Read more

There is not a lot available about, specifically, the retreat to Corunna in 1809.Christopher Hibbert's short book, "Corunna" is one of the few but you have to look hard to find a copy these days.In anticipation of a trip this summer to Spain organised to follow Sir John Moore's retreat and stand at Corunna, I found a copy of this and just finished it.

Excellent in that it gives a good broad brush picture of Sir John's life and military career but, as pure biography, I found it left too many questions unanswered. As a minor point, there is a brilliant cover on this book (my copy picked up second hand fortunately still had its dust-jacket) of Moore by Lawrence.I have seen the painting myself at the National Army Museum in Chelsea. However, we never learn in the book how Moore came to sit for the painting. Also, we never learn much about his relationship with Lady Hester Stanhope, surely one of the most fascinating female characters of the period. Then, too, we never learn whether Moore's promotions during his career, right up to General, were by merit or purchase. This is a fundamenal point to have omitted, in my view, as knowing the answer tells a lot about the man - both his personal fortune and his personal achievements.Moore came from a lower middle class family; there was no apparent money although in his very early years he had a noble patron in the Duke of Hamilton.

Too many questions for me, an avid reader of biography and a lover of this particular period of history for me to give this 5 stars. However, it was a cracking read, well illustrated and carefully based on the original sources, eg Moore's own journal, Napier and Oman (the foremost 19th c writers on the Peninsular War).A good addition to the little library my husband and I have on this period. ...
