Excerpt: Robert James "Bob" Fitzsimmons (May 26, 1863 - October 22, 1917), a British Cornish boxer, made boxing history as the sport's first three-division world champion. He also achieved fame for beating Gentleman Jim Corbett, the man who beat John L. Sullivan, and is in The Guinness Book of World Records as the Lightest heavyweight champion. Nicknamed Ruby Robert or The Freckled Wonder, he took pride in his lack of scars, and appeared in the ring wearing heavy woollen underwear to conceal the disparity between his trunk and leg-development. Fitzsimmons, the youngest of 12 children, was born in Helston, Cornwall. His father was James Fitzsimmons, born in County Armagh, Ireland, and his mother was Jane Strongman born in St Clement, Cornwall. Bob emigrated to New Zealand at the age of nine along with his parents, brothers and sisters. His family settled in Timaru, among many other Cornish settlers, and Bob became a blacksmith in his brother Jarrett's smithy. Between 1880 and 1881, Fitzsimmons reigned as champion of the Jem Mace tournament in New Zealand. Some say he officially began his career as a professional boxer in New Zealand later in 1881. Records remain unclear whether he received payment for a bout in which he knocked out Herbert Slade in two rounds. Fitzsimmons had six fights there, two of them bare-k...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=192919 ... Read more

Excerpt: Harold Pinter, CH, CBE (10 October 1930 24 December 2008), was an English playwright, screenwriter, actor, theatre director, political activist and poet. He was among the most influential British playwrights of modern times. In 2005, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Pinter's writing career spanned over 50 years and produced 29 original stage plays, 27 screenplays, many dramatic sketches, radio and TV plays, poetry, one novel, short fiction, essays, speeches, and letters. His best-known plays include The Birthday Party (1957), The Caretaker (1959), The Homecoming (1964), and Betrayal (1978), each of which he adapted to film. His screenplay adaptations of others' works include The Servant (1963), The Go-Between (1970), The French Lieutenant's Woman (1981), The Trial (1993), and Sleuth (2007). He directed almost 50 stage, television, and film productions and acted extensively in radio, stage, television, and film productions of his own and others' works. Pinter's dramas often involve strong conflicts between ambivalent characters who struggle for verbal and territorial dominance and for their own versions of the past. Stylistically, these works are marked by theatrical pauses and silences, comedic timing, irony, and menace. Thematically ambiguous, they raise complex issues of individual identity oppressed by social forces, language, and vicissitudes of memory. In 1981, Pinter stated that he was not inclined to write plays explicitly about political subjects; yet in the mid-1980s he began writing overtly political plays. Excerpt: Douglas Noël Adams (11 March 1952 11 May 2001) was an English writer, dramatist, and musician. He is best known as the author of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which started life in 1978 as a BBC radio comedy before developing into a "trilogy" of five books that sold over 15 million copies in his lifetime, a television series, several stage plays, comics, a computer game, and in 2005 a feature film. Adams's contribution to UK radio is commemorated in The Radio Academy's Hall of Fame. He also wrote Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (1987) and The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul (1988), and co-wrote The Meaning of Liff (1983), Last Chance to See (1990), and three stories for the television series Doctor Who. A posthumous collection of his work, including an unfinished novel, was published as The Salmon of Doubt in 2002. Known to some of his fans as "Bop Ad" for his illegible signature, Adams became known as an advocate for animals and the environment, and a lover of fast cars, cameras, and the Apple Mac. Excerpt: William Morris (24 March 1834 3 October 1896) was an English textile designer, artist, writer, and socialist associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the English Arts and Crafts Movement. Morris wrote and published poetry, fiction, and translations of ancient and medieval texts throughout his life. His best-known works include The Defence of Guenevere and Other Poems (1858), The Earthly Paradise (18681870), A Dream of John Ball and the utopian News from Nowhere. He was an important figure in the emergence of socialism in Britain, founding the Socialist League in 1884, but breaking with the movement over goals and methods by the end of that decade. He devoted much of the rest of his life to the Kelmscott Press, which he founded in 1891. The 1896 Kelmscott edition of the Works of Geoffrey Chaucer is considered a masterpiece of book design. Born in Walthamstow in east London, Morris was educated at Marlborough and Exeter College, Oxford. In 1856, he became an apprentice to Gothic revival architect G. E. Street. That same year he founded the Oxford and Cambridge Magazine, an outlet for his poetry and a forum for development of his theories of hand-craftsmanship in...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=33277 ... 1-0 out of 5 stars I would review it if I could!
Ordered on 4 December, and told that it would be despatched on the 8th December 2009, this book has not arrived at destination and it's been impossible to get hold of anyone at Amazon....only automatically-generated e-mail messages - still, better than "press 1, press 2, press 3"...
So sorry folks, I guess this is a review of Amazon.com as opposed to a review of the book!Bye bye US$35-odd that I paid!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Practical Guide
This is a great practical implementation guide for HR Practitioner. For every steps in setting up a talent management and succession management process in the organisation, it provides factors to questions, management decisions to be made and points to take note of. A great resource.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great practical guide to succession management!
Thanks to Doris and Matt for their great work!I found this book especially helpful in two areas:a) addressing key issues an organization should think about relative to its readiness for a succession planning process; and b) the detail on the talent review meeting process.I also like the "Terms and Definitions" section since many different terms within organizations are used to describe this process. My only wish is that the book spent more time discussing what should happen during the year (between talent review meetings).

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding resource
This book is an outstanding resource for any HR Business Partner and any business leader who understands the importance of identifying and building individual and organizational capability. The book contains very practical ideas and suggestions that will help an organization build maturity in talent management and succession planning. This is one of those books that all HR practitioners in HR Business Partner or Organizational Development roles should have!

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Leave Home Without It!
I purchased this book in preparation for several Talent Reviews that I was due to plan and facilitate within my organization. To say the least, it was a tremendously helpful and useful resource every step of the way.Not only did it provide me step-by-step guidance on preparing all the details of my sessions, but the checklists and templates were instrumental in helping me facilitate effective and meaningful discussions for my clients.

I am now using this book to help me in preparing next steps following the Talent Reviews to ensure momentum is not lost. And once again, I am delighted by the insight and practical tools the book offers to support me in this process.

My favorite part of this book is its "just-in-time" nature.I have read it on planes, in the office, at home and at stop lights on my way to work.In fact, I've even had it by my side in the actual Talent Review discussions in case I need to refer to it during breaks.

I highly recommend this book to anyone involved with Talent Management and Succession Planning in their organization. It offers new insights, as well as reinforces concepts and ideas you've heard before, and packages it all in a practitioner-friendly way to ensure effective application. ... Product Description

This IDC Insight discusses some of Microsoft's announcements at the 2010 Microsoft World Partner Conference on July 12, relating to a number of initiatives to accelerate the adoption of its Azure platform by customers and partners. Centrally, it included the Windows Azure Platform Appliance, a locked-down hardware and software environment to support deployment of Azure environments by customers and partners. It also announced new levels of partnership with Dell, Fujitsu, and HP to expand the services being delivered on Azure. These partners also made separate announcements outlining the Azure-based services they will deliver. The announcements by Microsoft, Dell, Fujitsu, and HP support the predictions in Asia/Pacific Cloud Services and Technologies 2010 Top 10 Predictions: Maturity Brings Growth (IDC #HK6684401S, December 2009).

Another announcement was from Infor, another key Microsoft partner and ISV. Infor made several announcements that expand its strategy for transitioning to a cloud delivery model. It announced the launch of Infor24, its core initiative to deliver cloud versions of its business solution software based on a new, previously announced partnership with Microsoft, with Infor now making use of a range of Microsoft solutions (Azure, SharePoint, Silverlight, and others) as it delivers its next-generation versions of its software. This is an important announcement for Infor and for Microsoft, as it moves Infor, as a large ISV, away from being technology agnostic to selecting a strategic technology partner to help move it into the cloud.
