Product Description

This IDC study presents our estimate of the current public cloud services market and a forecast for its growth during the next five years, based on IDC''s cloud services taxonomy.

The Asia/Pacific cloud services market is complex; the region encompasses a range of markets with different levels of maturity, which results in different rates of adoption for cloud services. While the region includes some very large and rapidly growing markets in India and China, it is the more mature market of Australia that shows the greatest revenue early in the forecast period. However, as the emerging markets mature and infrastructure improves, particularly widespread access to broadband services, their cloud services markets will outperform the early-adopter countries.

"The APEJ cloud services market will experience a period of rapid change between 2011 and 2014 as much improved regional broadband infrastructure reaches larger markets and the capability of cloud services matures and the breadth of services expands. With the promise of lower-cost services for application development and deployment and access to on-demand compute and storage services, both regional enterprises and application developers will be able to accelerate project delivery and better align their services with customer requirements," says Chris Morris, lead analyst, Cloud Technologies and Services, Practice Group, IDC Asia/Pacific.

Product Description

This IDC study forecasts revenue growth from public IT cloud services through 2014, segmented by five functional categories within eight regions/countries. The forecast data, driven by IDC's key assumptions for public IT cloud services development and adoption, lead to this document's key conclusions regarding cloud offerings' revenue and growth impacts on the IT industry, customer adoption shifts among the five IT cloud services categories, and shifting adoption patterns among the eight regions/countries.

According to IDC Chief Analyst Frank Gens, "Our forecast shows that public IT cloud services are currently 'crossing the chasm,' with modest revenue but very fast growth. Cloud services will be a major contributor to IT industry growth by 2014. IDC sees 2010–2014 as important years for IT suppliers to position themselves to capture that growth."

Product Description

In 1933, famed anthropologist Morris Opler met a Mescalero Apache he called Chris and worked with him to record the man's life story, from the bloody Apache Wars into the reservation years of the mid-twentieth century. Chris's vivid recollections are enriched at strategic moments with crucial background information on Apache history and culture, supplied by Opler.

Chris was born around 1880, the son of a Chiricahua man and a Mescalero woman. At the age of six, he and his family and other Chiricahua Apaches became prisoners of war and were relocated by the U.S. government to Florida and Alabama. Eventually settling on the Mescalero Apache reservation in New Mexico, Chris grew up expecting to become a shaman like his parents. Although Chris apprenticed as a shaman, his confidence in his healing ability waned after he was forced at the age of seventeen to attend federal government schools. Nonetheless, his interest in Mescalero religion, healing, and other traditional customs and beliefs remained, and that intimate knowledge of his people's world underscores and deepens the story of his own life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating account of the Apache experience
This is the fascinating and absorbing life story of a Mescalero/Chiracahua Apache man -- one who, when he was just a small child, knew Geronimo. Told in his own words, the story is annotated by a white ethnologist, Opler, whomade a study of the Apache people over several decades and knew this manvery well (the first section of the book explains the culture andhistorical context), so that all references made by the speaker can beunderstood by any reader. As he recalls events of his life, he draws thereader deeper into his experience: from his respect and love of the oldApache ways, to the stress and anxiety created by tribal and familydisruption caused by government interference. He speaks often and atlength about the uses of spiritual power as found in plants, animals, andthe earth. This book was apparently written as a textbook for culturalanthropology at Stanford University, but it also deserves our attention forits humanity and for the intriguing story it tells. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great alternative to video games!
Looking for a birthday gift (15th birthday) for my son that would spark some interest to do something besides playing video games led me to this Lego product and I must say the venture was successful. He has truly enjoyed using his "mind" and "hands" to build his robots and looks forward to coming home after school to do just that instead of craving the Playstation as before.I have to "restrict" his time playing video games but with the Lego NXT he can build at will which is also a real plus. The unit has worked well thus far and at this point my only criticism of the product is that it does not come with a good storage case for all the pieces (you'll have to buy something to do this or pieces are likely to get lost and it is difficult to keep things organized without a storage unit).I also bought two Lego NXT guide books in addition to the unit which have proven worthwhile as the included book is much more limited on what all you can build with the kit.My son has said that he would like to pursue an engineering degree now when he attends college as he would love to continue to design and build new products (such as cars) as a result of his experience with this Lego kit.It is expensive when you look at this set as just another Lego set...but to me it is priceless to see him creating functional robots that makes him and I both feel very proud of his accomplishments in building one that works as intended and all while the Playstation sits and collects dust...what could be better!!I guess only some gift like a bicycle or such that gets your kids outdoors and active could be better than something like this but for now I think I've found a perfect gift to make him active inside his mind.I do know that over time I will probably have to buy add on kits to keep this NXT kit interesting but I'll gladly fork out the money to do so as to me this has been a great alternative to video games!! I grew up playing with Lego's and now I can watch my son do the same...outstanding product!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informational!
You would need this book if you own the LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT Kit.Can't get it work without it!

2-0 out of 5 stars Pictures and programming problems
The problem with this book is it has black and white photos of black and white pieces. They don't give a close up of what your adding to your structure. Writing is too small to look at without a magnify glass.
Programming was screwed up in some places.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting Book On NXT Robots
Lots Of good information on NXT G-code,Bluetooth programming for the NXT, and an informative guide to designing your NXT bots.I thought this book was well worth the money. The "LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT-G Programming Guide (Technology in Action) is a very good intro to this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book
The LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT Idea Book: Design, Invent, and Build

I read this book and I really enjoyed it.This was the first Mindstorms book that I read and it was really easy to understand and got me off to a quick start. The only reason that I didn't give it 5 stars was that the graphics and text are printed on an off white background and it made it a little harder to read and the graphics themselves are all black and white and some of them were a little hard to figure out the robot designs because of it.But dont let this keep you from getting this great robotics book. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Professional's Choice for a Bartending Manual
This is the grand-daddy of all drink recipe books. I worked behind bars for years and this is the only one I ever needed. Clear and concise. Nicely organized. This is a book for the home or business. Avoid the embarrasment of making the drink incorrectly or having to ask.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have For All Bartenders.
While there are better books on the subject, this is the standard reference, or must have for anyone wanting to tend bar, as this contains the traditional/old fashioned recipes that are all the latest fad due to the MadMen craze (which is a great show). I remember my Dad looking over his copy of Mr. Boston in the early 60s when it was his turn to host the latest cocktail party, and he would get all his bar gagets ready to go, the jigger, ice strainer, shot glass etc.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent For The Home Bar
I have tried several guides over time and years ago settled on Mr. Boston's guide. It provides accurate ratios and, best of all, a picture of the recommended glassware for each drink. It is simple, easy to follow and provides information such as sections on Eggnogs, Punches, the usage of Wine in Mixed Drinks and even Non-Alcoholic drinks.

The book is broken down by type of alcohol (also Shooters, Cordials, Frozen Drinks, etc.) and has a complete alphabetical index in the back. This means if you have a bottle of Tequila you have an entire section (45 mixes) from which to choose a drink. On the other hand, if your in-law wants to throw you a curve ball and asks for a Rum Runner you know you will find it on page 66.

Color photographs scattered throughout complete this guide giving a visual for many different drinks and the glassware recommended. Also included is how to stock your bar, how to float liqueurs, the art of pouring, chilling and muddling and much more.

I not only use this book in my own home but often include it as part of a housewarming gift basket.

If only it was spiral bound it would be a five-star guide.

This IDC Study is predicated upon IDC's belief that the Asia/Pacific IT services market and the economic environment in general are, at this juncture, poised at a pivotal stage of recovery. Analyzing the opportunity resulting from this, IDC undertook a regionwide exercise to analyze key green shoots for recovery in the IT services space, with the underlying objective to help stakeholders in the Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan), or APEJ, market improve their competitive position. According to IDC, the three key green shoots for recovery of IT services are demand for (a) datacenter virtualization and consolidation, (b) hosted services, and (c) innovative delivery and pricing models.

"The green shoots of recovery for IT services are prevalent, there is an inherent need to innovate and showcase accountability in order to gain competitive position in the market," says Mayur Sahni, Senior Analyst, IDC AP Services. "The 'new' economy will have more innovative offerings and will ensure the dawn of cloud-computing services in the Asia/Pacific market."

    Product Description

In this IDC study, IDC services analysts come together to review the current year and discuss market trends that will impact and drive the future of the IT services market. One of the outcomes of this process is a shortlist of our top 10 predictions for the coming year. The list, discussed in this study, includes factors that IDC believes will have the biggest commercial impact on the services market across Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan), or APEJ, in 2010.

"The financial turmoil in 2009 forced CIOs in the region to evaluate new service delivery and pricing models with a key focus on "de-capitalizing" IT in the face of significant budget constraints," says Philip Carter, associate research director, IT Services Practice Group, IDC Asia/Pacific. "As a result, the financial model of the cloud and 'everything-as-a-service' became more attractive. This has set the scene perfectly for the locus of power to shift from traditional enterprise hardware and software vendors to the services players (and particularly the cloud) in 2010. Organizations that can successfully integrate these new models into their existing technology architectures and road maps, and vendors that can develop mindshare with the CIO in this area, will be best placed to 'ride the recovery curve' in 2010."

    Product Description

This IDC study discusses the factors that will have the biggest commercial impact on the ICT market across Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan), or APEJ, in 2010. After the effects of the 2008/2009 financial crisis, IT planning has undergone some major rethinking and this is reflected within IDC's predictions for 2010. As the economy begins to show early signs of recovery, the trends and behaviors that were born as a result of tightened purse strings should continue well into the recovery.

"For end users, the manner in which IT is invested in, used, and accounted for has fundamentally changed: customer care is paramount, immediate ROI is mandatory, and everyone is accountable for driving value from IT, not just the CIO and his team. For vendors, the days of simply selling a point solution into the IT department with a fixed price point and straightforward list deliverables is long gone. In 2010, it will be the organization that is able to transform itself to effectively partner with complimentary industries, enable its sales force to sell across multiple business units, and finally create flexible pricing and delivery models that will come out on top," says Simon Piff, director, Enterprise Infrastructure, IDC Asia/Pacific.

The acquisition of 3Com by HP reflects more than a need for HP to increase its network product revenue. While it does broaden the existing ProCurve portfolio and deliver a very large market in the booming China market, it also allows HP to compete more effectively with former close partner Cisco. Cisco's move into the datacenter with the UCS offering fundamentally changed the datacenter market for all players.

HP now stands in a position that can deliver not only increased networking revenue but also the ability to maintain its strong datacenter role and to facilitate future delivery cost reductions for its managed- and cloud-services portfolios.

    Product Description

This IDC study shows that the market for business continuity and disaster recovery (BCDR) services in the Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan), or APEJ, region will experience a compound annual growth (CAGR) of 10.9% between 2008 and 2013. With this outlook, the market is expected to grow from US$626.62 million in 2008 to more than US$1 billion (US$1,050.59 million) in 2013. To understand the spending on business continuity services by organizations, this study looks at the various drivers and inhibitors of the market, as well some of the key end-user insights obtained from the Asia/Pacific IT Services Survey conducted in 2008 and 2009.

"The BCDR market will continue to grow as organizations are faced with increasing concerns on security issues and natural disasters that have created an awareness for continuity solutions and the convergence of storage, security, and continuity forces organizations to seek vendors with capabilities to protect and secure their business," says Gowtham Sampath, market analyst, IT Services, IDC Asia/Pacific.
