Product Description

Hawaii’s forest bird community is the most insular and most endangered in the world and serves as a case study for threatened species globally. Ten have disappeared in the past thirty years, nine are critically endangered, and even common species are currently in decline. Thane K. Pratt, his coeditors, and collaborators, all leaders in their field, describe the research and conservation efforts over the past thirty years to save Hawaii’s forest birds. They also offer the most comprehensive look at the reasons for these extinctions and attempts to overcome them in the future.

Among the topics covered in this book are trends in bird populations, environmental and genetic factors limiting population size, avian diseases, predators, and competing alien bird species. Color plates by award-winning local photographer Jack Jeffrey illustrate all living species discussed or described.

5-0 out of 5 stars Paradise lost
Many residents of the islands have never seen a Hawaiian forest bird, except possibly an owl hunting over low shrub, because almost all the birds have been driven from the places humans live or can easily get to. The authors of "Conservation Biology of Hawaiian Forest Birds" consider that to be one of the many hindrances to obtaining support for saving - even increasing - the range and numbers of these LGBs - "little green birds," although some are (or were) red, yellow, orange or black, and a few, like the Hawaiian crow, are not little.

The birds have many enemies, ranging from avian malaria to soft-hearted (and -headed) ladies who feed colonies of unwanted cats. In the chapter on "Life History and Demography," Bethany Woodworth and Thane Pratt write, "Modeling suggests that in the absence of mammalian predation on nests and adults, many threatened populations of Hawaiian birds would attain stable or positive population growth rates."

Fat chance that the cat fanciers will get on board with that, but the overall tone of "Conservation Biology" is hopeful. In one line: The situation of the birds is dire but not finished.

Very dire. Forest birds have been driven out of the lowlands by disease, habitat destruction and novel predators until they now occupy only about 16 percent of their original range. For some species, like the Maui parrotbill, much less than that.

On the other hand, in the past 30 to 40 years, much of the remaining range of the birds has enjoyed much better management than it used to get. Fencing out goats, sheep, cows and pigs helps. In limited areas, fencing and poisoning can even reduce the depredations of rats and mongooses. Not cats, though.

The LGBs fascinate evolutionary biologists. First, although Hawaii's native plants mostly had ancestors in the south, Hawaii's native birds mostly originated in the north.

Pratt marvels at the formidable challenge facing the first bird immigrants. Few of the plants were even remotely like the ones they had depended on in the periboreal environment whence they originated.

For those who could figure out something to eat, the islands were a paradise: no vertebrate predators until other birds, like hawks and eagles, arrived; few diseases or parasites compared with the Mainland; and an equable climate.

Although most birds got here from the north, it appears that the little finch that gave rise to the honeycreepers was a rare migrant from the south. Her descendants speciated luxuriantly, until there were more than 50 species of honeycreepers. Some, like the (probably) recently extinct poouli on Maui were so different from their cousins that until DNA testing settled it, taxonomists were in some doubt whether the poouli was a honeycreeper or not.

Although there are mysteries remaining about the LGBs and the other native forest birds, "Conservation Biology" (which weighs about as much as a thousand LGBs) will answer most answerable questions. At that, it makes no attempt to address the fraught existence of the remaining native birds of the lowlands, the coot, duck and rail. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Starring Peter Craig
This exquisite book will delight all readers, and especially charm Road to Avonlea fans. After reading this book, one definitely wants to watch the TV series. The author did her best and wrote this book with love and passion. The setting is picuresque Avonlea, Prince Edward Island. The season is Automn, apples are being picked, the temperature is getting colder and the germs are spreading. The main themes in this book are: appearance, love, charity, haughtiness, tolerance and friendship. Peter Craig, the Kings' hired-hand stars in this book. His dedication, ambitions and perserverance lead him to great heights. At first he is looked-down upon by everyone (except Sara Stanley, who is his accomplice throughout his struggle) but proves to them that he is as good as them, even better. I liked this book because it taught me that even if others don't have much esteem for you, it is possible to eventually make them see you with the same brilliant image that you have of yourself. Through Peter Craig's story, we are enriched and enlightened. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars relevant for Bible Study and preaching in church
Alfaro's commentary was the most helpful book I used in preparation for teaching a seven week Bible Study class on Micah that had hour long sessions. The other texts I used were Wolf's Augsburg commentary (for which I do not know enough Hebrew to follow), the Anderson/Freedman Anchor Bible (again, often over my head) and volume 2 of Sweeney's Berit Olam/Liturgical Press (also excellent but rather brief).
Alfaro for the most part only references theories and research that he finds plausible and helpful for a general reader. Thus he avoids broad outlines of the history of interpretation or describing every possible explanation.
Important themes are national disarmament, prophecy as a call to conversion and salvation (rather than a prediction of the future), the dissenting social voice of a prophet and the way we are prone to look back to our traditions (David, Exodus, Sinai) to make sense of the present rather than wait for a change sometime in the future.
I appreciated the way he adopted the reading of chapters 4 and 5 as a back and forth dialogue with false prophets - (taking his lead from Alsonso-Schokel, Sicre and van der Woude) - a very creative and helpful technique for the whole class.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Story of Mr. Circus.
When I was young I lived in NW New Jersey and began going to Hunt's Circus when I was 12.Continued until I was 26 when I moved to Wyoming. My friends, Dave and Dolores Nimmo, ran Hunt's Wild West Concert. When I was older and working, I would put my horse clothes in the back of the car, and take off for the circus when it was close enough to where I lived. If I got there before dinner, I was always welcomed and invited to dinner, afterwhich I rode Dave's trick rope horse in the spec (grand entry).

I knew Mr.Hunt and his family, and loved Hunt's Circus. He did a wonderful job of telling the history of Hunt's Circus, as did Mr. Cloutman in writing it all down.It is a wonderful addition to my theatre and circus library!

The essays in Part 1 consider the major elements in the church spectrum; Part II looks at the world by region; Part III treats the foundational disciplines of mission; and Part IV focuses on special challenges such as women in mission, the poor and mission, urban mission, the need for dialogue with other faiths, and church-state relations. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Collection of Essays on Missions
This is a good collection of essays on Missions from a variety of perspectives. It's a great overview and introduction on what is going on in terms of missions work in the mid- to late- 1990s.It's not all theoretical (as there is some practical stuff), but gives a lot of history and context, as well as a variety of places for missions, and some missiological issues. It is written from a varied Christian background.

The book is divided into 4 sections, and every essay is approximately 10-15 pages:

Section 1:Christian Families in mission.Four essays are presented, from Evangelical Missions, Conciliar Missions (i.e., the Ecumenical movement within Protestantism, usually associated with liberal Protestantism, and the World Council of Churches), Roman Catholic Missions, and Pentecostal&Charismatic Missions. Each of these essays gives some background of history, assumptions, theology and missiological background (e.g., for the Roman Catholics, Vatican II plays a very strong influence, and is discussed).

Section 2:Christian Mission by Region. This is a very practical section, discussing missions in various parts of the world. The areas covered are Southern Asia, the former USSR (i.e., the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS)), Africa, North America, Oceania, Latin America, Northeast Asia, Europe, and Middle East.

Section 3:Foundational Disciplines of Mission. This chapter is on more of the theory and theology behind missions, and how to interact with other cultures (and their religions).Essays in this section include one by Bosch on "Reflections on Biblical Models of Mission," and others on Mission Theology, Spiritual Formation for Mission (written by Catholics, so they emphasize dialogue, mentoring, developmental psychology understanding of peoples, and understanding culture, religion, tradition, rather than the Protestant approach of in spiritual formation of piety, conviction based upon Scripture, and then Contextualization through Incarnation), Mission Strategies (mostly an essay about applying strategies), Contextualization in Mission, (towards) Forming Indigenous Theologies, and Popular Religions.

The final section, section 4 presents special challenges in mission:The teaching of missions, women in mission, mission and the Problem of Affluence, Mission and Social Justice:An American Dilemma, Urban Mission, Christian Dialogues with Other Faiths, Christian-Muslim Relations, Church-State Relationship and Mission, and then some stuff about Gerald H. Anderson.

I think, if one was looking for a book to be introduced to what's going on in missions and some different views on this topic, this would be a good book.It doesn't strike me as the type that has a timeless classic feel to it (unlike Bosch's book, Transforming Mission) or Stott's book, Christian Mission.

Nonetheless, it's good supplement to hearing first-hand stories on missions. ... Read more

Product Description
`A veritable triumph for the authors. The book is very suitable for use in both university and professional level accountancy courses’ - The British Accounting Review

This book provides case material which can be used to investigate the pragmatic and political, as well as the technical, dimensions to financial reporting. The authors present a variety of real-life British case studies in financial reporting, for use in teaching financial accounting techniques, accounting policy and interpretation of financial statements.

The case studies illustrate a wide variety of important issues in contemporary financial reporting. Most cover a specific problem area, such as goodwill or accounting for brands, but they also provide an opportunity to investigate the strengths and weaknesses of the accounting process itself. All the cases use real and identified companies and real accounts.

In addition, the introductory chapter shows how to set about developing an answer to case-study questions. The authors suggest a variety of questions for each case, and teachers are encouraged to develop alternative questions appropriate to their individual courses.

The solutions notes for each case are available in a disk for instructors who recommend the book for course use. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Quick And The Dead
T. M. McNally is a wildly talented writer from Arizona of whom I had never heard till a friend urged me to read his collection, QUICK."This is just the sort of book you should be reading," she said."And writing."When she had gone I opened it up and plunged right in, as if to the bottom of one of the Tempe swimming pools McNally specializes in.My friend was correct. This writing is intense, with sordid encounters and strange, almost surreal things happening to his leading characters as a matter of course.I thought things were crazy here in SF, but the "Copper State" has us beat by a country mile.

In "Insomnia" a man wonders if his wife is having some kind of affair with their pool boy.He switches addictions, from cigarettes to booze, and takes a second honeymoon trip to St. Louis to celebrate. The vertiginous span of the Arch is perfect McNally material, and he makes the most of it."The Last Year of the Soapbox" is a sad tale of a boy teased in school, pissed on in the showers and the target end of many a snapped jock. When he asks his father to help him defend himself he uncovers his dad's bruised, stoic masculinity, and he grows up with a certain wariness about his body which leads him to wear underwear in the jacuzzi and three condoms at the same time.Tellingly, he becomes an ace race driver, counting on speed to help him make the escape his father never could.Other stories tell equally heartbreaking tales of American life, often with women's lives, an arena in which he seems only slightly less familiar.

I sort of figured out how to write one of McNally's short stories. You divide your material into a series of two page "scenes."Half of these will take place in the past, the other half in the present tense. You can jumble them up if you like.Half of the scenes will begin with a proverb-like general statement that has something a little askew to it, like "Tragedy is what happens when you don't think anything will."The other half will be direct, first person, and often from somewhere deep in the narrator's past, such as, "Of course no one had ever touched my balls."Separate these scenes with some cryptic asterisks-in this case, three or four black squares. All your narrators use them.Add in some hot weather, a saguaro or two, and you're pretty much there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Collection!
In T.M. McNally's "Quick," you will find an array of characters struggling. Whether it's with their addictions, their propensity toward violence, their immortality, or simply their own pasts, these struggles rise off the page and make themselves known without embarrassment or apology. Complex and richly layered, McNally doesn't shy away from difficult images or emotions. And although at times it seemed to me to be trying too hard, it's easy to see why this collection won the Michigan Literary Fiction Award.

Product Description
The Third World and its complexities arouse increasing curiosity and concern throughout the developed world. While the ambitions of colonialism have been increasingly spurned in favor of the goals of human rights, the Third World still finds itself facing an ever increasing income gap with the developed world.

With an emphasis on gender and environmental issues, Geography of the Third World, Second Edition explores major issues such as population, farming systems, and rural development. Examining this ongoing development, the text also addresses energy issues, industrialization and the subsequent urbanization. The last segment of the book examines internal interaction including spatial structures and the movement of goods, national economic management, and finally external relationships created by the far-reaching influences of people, commodities, capital, and ideas derived from the Third World. ...
