Star Trek Voyager Mosaic
How wonderful to listen to the voice of Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) as she guides the listener through the events that created the enigma that is Janeway. The story begins somewhere in season two of Voyagers quest to return home from the delta quadrant and then leaps backward in time to provide insight and great back story into Janeways life. For Voyager fans, this is a must hear / read experience, it explains why Janeway acts and reacts the way she does, her isolation, her loneliness and her almost maniacal desire to save her crew, begin to make sense.Jeri Taylor wrote it with recommendations from Kate Mulgrew so its authority is beyond reproach. This book delivers a completely believable and moving story which, when read by Kate, at times had me misty eyed. Great stuff.

OUTSTANDING!
This is a must for any Voyagaer fan.This explains many of the unknown events in Capt. Janeway's past.It shows us why she is the most "human" of the Star Trek Captains yet.

A must
I am an all out Kathryn Janeway fan, and was disappointed when she did not share her story in Pathways, but this almost makes up for it. Jeri Tayloris an amazing author, and I have nothing but praise for her Voyager books.She had a very little ammount of info to work with, and she created amasterpiece with it. But, I said almost because there were somethings thatI would have liked to have seen in Mosaic that weren't there. I think thatif she had done a complete work on Kathryn's childhood it would have beenwonderful; but also about 1,000 pages long. It isa must for every Voyagerand Janeway fan.

Didn't tide me over
The Hamish Macbeth books on tape weren't available yet at the library, so I took out this book on tape, since I loved Woman of Substance (movie and book) and found Sudden Change of Heart good enough on tape to entertain me during physical exercise and menial labor.I made it almost all the way to the end of cassette 1 out of 11.

Oh my dog, this book is so bad.The adverbs are reminiscent of an old bodice ripper, where you will find such overused and misused gems as irretrievably and irrevocably.This book's first section uses my personal trash-novel favorite:imperceptibly.If the story is told in the first person by Mal, how would she know that the man on the other end of the phone sighed imperceptibly?

What a load of tosh. I have only ever read one other Barbara Taylor Bradford and the was about 20 years ago, the well known 'Woman Of Substance' and I remember absolutely loving it. I can't say I even liked this one.
The characters are so one dimensional and frankly BORING. The description and the dialogue are saccharine sweet. The way Mal talks about her husband and her marriage and her life in general is so idealistic it made me want to puke.Anyone who thinks this is a good read must have a brain the size of a gnat and haved the mental age of 12.I've written more interesting shopping lists.

What an absolutely boring book! My grandmother could tell a better story than this. What was Harper Collins thinking about when they published this book? This book was made into a Movie? Good Grief!

EVERYTHING TO GAIN
From a Mothers point of view this story was a heartbreaking time in the life of someone who had so much going for her. The realism displayed during the grief, depression and months of trying to go on could only be written by someone who was close to the trials Mal went through.I don't think I'll ever forget the song that still rings in my mind that was part of the story. I felt the closure came when the children and her husband appeared in her dream and she was finally able to bury the ashes. I thought this was a good book and movie!

Don't bother
I read A Woman of Substance, and liked the book, so when I came across Everything to Gain, by the same author, I expected a good read.

I was extremely disappointed.The book was not worth the time.There is nothing to hold your interest - no strong characters or character development, no interesting plot, no sharp writing or snappy dialogue.

OH THOSE SECRETS
Here's another sizzler set in Hollywood, this time in the 1930's.The lives of the movers and shakers in TABOO are a roller coaster ride of sins and secrets and of unattainable happiness.Gage's two main sufferers, Kate Hamilton and Joseph Knight, go through the melodramatic motion of uniting then paying the price for it.But it's Eve Sinclair, the child superstar, who really makes TABOO a delicious romp.Her cold-hearted volcanic temperament will make any fan of Valley of the Dolls stand up and cheer.-----Martin Boucher

Everlasting Love - Tragedy
Well, first of all I have to say this book is incredible. You start reading it and can not put it down till your done. The only little thing - which bothered me the most - was the loss at the end. They found this incredible love just to lose it. I'm not the easy crying kind, but this left you with so much raw emotions it was unbeliveble. It's like I said at the start - incredible.

Taboo leaves a haunting thought on love..
Although the plot needs a few details to enhance its credibility, the entire story is beautifully presented to its finale - love that is so painfully beautiful that it is a sin to love as much.It leaves a slightly disturbing view of what is left of us when loves consumes so much of us that there is little left when it's gone.This is the kind of love many of love yearn for in love, willing to exchange to have it.Life may very well be the price to pay to have it.This is all states beautifully with the quote: "When love comes, you plunge without thinking.You see that your life was an empty shell before love came, so you turn your back on the past without a second thought.And then, when the world comes back to claim its own, there's no way to fight it, because you have no heart to endure loneliness anymore.You've thrown it away, like a child throwing away a paper toy."Again, Gage has written something of a fiction that is a little beyond just a story.. always nice to have something to think about after reading a book. ... A Good Murder Mystery for Beach or Plane
This is a good read for beach or plane.It is a page-turner featuring a female Miami news-reporter who is also a private eye.The book is about rape, santeria, and a 22 year-old unsolved crime. Though not as good as her first book, Contents Under Pressure (Avon Twilight Mystery) (1st in Britt Montero Mystery series), I still recommend it for a fast and pleasurable read.

Worthwhile read
Buchanan obviously likes Miami, and it comes through in her writing. She worked as a reporter for many years, and that experience also comes across in this novel. The two main story lines are interesting and do not detract from one another. The pace is quick, the action is exciting, the dialogue is real and the plots twists kept my interest from beginning to end.

Three mysteries in one
Buchanan, former multiple-award-winning crime reporter for the Miami Herald, enjoying a second successful career as an author, has created a fiesty, indefatigable Miami crime reporter in her heroine, Britt Montero. Montero, a Cuban-American, makes her second appearance in this 1994 novel, which juggles three different crime plots in the steamy atmosphere of mid-summer Miami.

Montero, whose lonely personal life is never going to get better as long as the job comes first, investigates a series of apt accidents, a serial rapist, and the 20-year old unsolved sex murder of a little girl. Plot lines come to the fore and recede into the background in a natural flow depending on Montero's attention.

The child's murder haunts an old cop friend, now dying of heart disease, who believes the hot new candidate for governor is the perp. Montero needles the candidate and interviews the child's family in her spare time.

Meanwhile, the rapist grows more violent and spooky with every success. Montero follows his trail from the police lab to her aunt's Santeria rituals, prying information from the police and piecing together articles which infuriate the rapist and make her a target.

And accidents keep happening to people who couldn't deserve them more.

Montero stays on top of the action, although she doesn't scoop the police completely, which is a nice touch. The newsroom, with its often conflicting interests and strained relationships with police, politicians and each other, crackles with energy.

Buchanan's Miami sizzles and Montero takes us to parts of her city no tourist will ever see.

Great Vacation Read
I'm an avid mystery/suspense reader and a friend recommended Edna Buchanan.This was the first book that I read by her and I loved it.It was well written and interesting and perfect for a summer read.

Complex college course book.
Talk about a hard read, this book is not for the literary amateur or someone looking for a fast paced and exciting read. Although it is rich with descriptions and definitely one of Joyce's better works, the story itself is tedious and hard to follow. The actual physical book quality was standard and the price is decent.

Wrong date in description
The description says that the events of "The Dead" took place on New Year's Eve.They did not: the most likely date for the events (I'll spare you all the reasons and details) is the evening of January 6th, also know as "the Feast of the Epiphany."

I HEAR THIS SETLOCK RENDITION OF THESE STORIES OVER AND OVER AGAIN
This review was written for the Setlock spoken word recording entitled the Dead but which also includes Ivy Day in the Committee Room.

Unfortunately amazon tends to reprint reviews for items of equal title, even across formats. Please do a search of The Dead, with commuter's library in the parameter and you will discover the correct item and an excellent unabridged recording of the Dead which you may soon grow to love and appreciate.

I have several different recordings of these stories, none done better than Setlock.

Ivy Day is my favorite tale for its complexity of "dialogue" (really octologue) which Setlock skillfully and subtly and in a lowered key relates. I have heard more dramatized and individualized readings, but Setlock gives a proper subdued, not quite melancholic tone, with quiet respectful humor, like a dear friend telling an ancient great tale at an old firplace while seated upon comfortable chairs before a gentle turf fire with adequate and appropriate beverage of an evening.

Ivy Day from Dubliners is truly a great story which stands up to multiple listenings, even after the initial jokes grow familiar ("and be glad he has a country to sell!"). Like rereading Ulysses several times, one's understanding and appreciation of the profounder universal themes only grows more acute upon each listening.

In fact I find in the profundity and conversational conflicts of Ivy Day the germ of the technical skills Joyce required to write the multiple conversations in the Cyclops and the newspaper office episodes (the latter I will not risk mispelling here).

The grace and gentle approach of Setlock bears up even under repeated and constant listening. I only wish these were transferred to CD before my tapes run out!

An Evocative Christmas Evening
Set in early 20th century Dublin this short story was the last in a collection called The Dubliners by native son, James Joyce.Despite the mournful title there is no murder nor mysterious death involved in this seemingly simple piece, set in an old-fashioned Society home during the Christmas season.Instead this proves an introspective tale from the viewpoint of middle-aged Gabriel, favorite nephew of his respected aunts who host an annual dinner party.The role of music and performers is debated among their many lively guests.

Gabriel's required speech during dinner praises the Irish tradition of warm hospitality.But something causes his wife, Gretta, to hark back to her girlhood and her first love--whose poignant memory threatens his plans for connubial bliss in their hotel room.Delicate as the snowflakes which blot out the city landscape, barely plotted with delicious hints of unexpressed emotion, The Dead transports readers to a different gas-lit age, where beauty and grace are subtly exhibited and passionately sought after.Joyce reminds us that music possesses the power to evoke the past and serve as a catalyst both for pain and pleasure.This may be read in one sitting, but don't miss the author's other reminiscences.

Useful Case Study Collection of Literary Masterpiece
I've found this to be the most useful of all the "case study" texts I've tried from both St. Martin's/Bedford and Norton.The primary text is sufficiently contained and the representative critical methodologies presented clearly enough to introduce students to both literature and literary theory without overwhelming them.Moreover, "The Dead" is capable of repaying the close and observant reader with a Joycean "epiphany" perhaps not surpassed by any other literary text (the last several paragraphs, especially, require attention to the developing, altering meanings of each and every word).

I have one caveat: the essay representing feminist criticism I frankly find baffling.The writer, apparently trying to have her cake and eat it too, manages to indict Joyce as a sexist while applauding the story as a critique of sexism and patriarchal hegemony!It does not "seem" to occur to her that Joyce may be removed from his central character, Gabriel, or that her evidence for Gabriel's male arrogance may actually be Joyce's idea from the start.A close reading of the character certainly suggests an ironic portrayal--everything that appears to be in Gabriel's favor is exposed through Joyce's subtle language as self-delusion.The feminist critic, however, impugns Joyce by suggesting that his "intentions" are less honorable than the meaning of the text itself!

Perhaps the writer is overstating a point in order to provide a better example of the type of critical approach she was asked to represent for the purposes of this anthology. I know that I will suggest as much should I again have occasion to use this particular essay. ... Read more
