Product Description

Sufism, the mystical path of Islam, is a key feature of the complex Islamic culture of South Asia today. Influenced by philosophies and traditions from other Muslim lands and by pre-Islamic rites and practices, Sufism offers a corrective to the image of Islam as monolithic and uniform.

In Sacred Spaces, Pakistani artist and educator Samina Quraeshi provides a locally inflected vision of Islam in South Asia that is enriched by art and by a female perspective on the diversity of Islamic expressions of faith. A unique account of a journey through the author’s childhood homeland in search of the wisdom of the Sufis, the book reveals the deeply spiritual nature of major centers of Sufism in the central and northwestern heartlands of South Asia. Illuminating essays by Ali S. Asani, Carl W. Ernst, and Kamil Khan Mumtaz provide context to the journey, discussing aspects of Sufi music and dance, the role of Sufism in current South Asian culture and politics, and the spiritual geometry of Sufi architecture.

Quraeshi relies on memory, storytelling, and image making to create an imaginative personal history using a rich body of photographs and works of art to reflect the seeking heart of the Sufi way and to demonstrate the diversity of this global religion. Her vision builds on the centuries-old Sufi tradition of mystical messages of love, freedom, and tolerance that continue to offer the promise of building cultural and spiritual bridges between peoples of different faiths.

The emergence of resistance to antimicrobial agentsis a global public health problem. Although a numberof factors can be identified which contribute tothis problem, ß-lactamases of Gram-negative bacteriaare the most important mechanism of resistanceagainst ß-lactam drugs except carbapenems andcephamycins. This study was carried out to evaluate theprevalence, development of resistance in clinicallysignificant bacteria against commonly usedantibiotics with special reference to ß-lactamantibiotics and to determine the frequency ofextended-spectrum ß-lactamases (ESBLs) productionamong Enteric Gram-negative rods EGNRs). Considerable resistance was demonstrated among theorganisms against all the commonly used antibioticsincluding ß-lactams. There was no antibiotic showing100% sensitivity which was tested against sufficientnumber of organisms, even carbapenems and beta- lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitors had developedresistance. ... Excerpt: Wasim Akram (Punjabi, Urdu: ; born 3 June 1966) is a former Pakistani left arm fast bowler and left handed batsman in cricket, who represented the Pakistan national cricket team in Test cricket and One Day International matches. Akram is regarded as one of the best fast bowlers in cricket. He holds the world record for most wickets in List A cricket with 881 and is second only to Sri Lankan off-spin bowler, Muttiah Muralitharan in terms of One Day International wickets with 502. He is considered to be one of the founders and perhaps the finest exponent of reverse swing bowling. The revolutionary nature of reverse swing initially resulted in accusations of ball tampering by cricket critics, although the skill of the reverse swing delivery has now been accepted as a legitimate features of ability in cricket. Akram's later career was also tarnished with accusations of match fixing by critics, although these remain unproven. On 30 September 2009, Akram was one of five new members inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame. Akram began his sporting career in Pakistan playing for several cricket clubs. However, like several other Pakistani cricketers during the 1980s, his talent was identified at club level and he was selected into the national side, completely bypassing any domestic First-class competition during that period. In 1988 he signed for Lancashire County Cricket Club in England and went on to become their most successful overseas players. Excerpt: Black Gold (February 17, 1921 - January 18, 1928) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse that won the 50th running of the Kentucky Derby in 1924. Black Gold's dam, U-See-it, was owned by Al Hoots. As a race mare, U-See-it was not fashionably bred, but she was fast. There was only one horse the Oklahoma-bred could never beat in her 6 furlong races at small western tracks: the Hall of Famer Pan Zareta. But she outclassed most other rivals. U-See-it won 34 of her starts. It was her purse money that supported Al Hoots and his wife Rosa. The Hoots lived in Indian territory and were well known on the Texas/New Orleans racing circuit. In 1916, Al Hoots entered U-See-it into a claiming race in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. Some say he first made agreements with the other owners and trainers that no one would claim her. But a man called Toby Ramsey apparently broke that agreement. Al Hoots held off Ramsey with a shotgun. Al Hoots and U-See-it were banned from racing for life. By 1917, Al was dying. In certain versions of the story he had a dream that if U-See-it were to be bred to one of the leading sires of the time, the foal that his beloved mare carried would win the Kentucky Derby. In other versions, Al merely hoped that this could happen. Rosa Hoots honored her husband's last wish. When oil was discovered in what is now Oklahoma, Mrs. Al Hoots (who was a member of the Osage Nation), shipped U-See-it to the Idle Hour Stock Farm in Lexington, Kentucky where Colonel E. R. Bradley's Black Toney stood at stud. The result was a black colt called Black Gold. Hanley Webb (or Hedley or Harry: depends on the source), wh...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=7502461 ... Read more
