Product Description
Comics writers have fertile imaginations and great story-telling skill. Here they step out from behind the artists to show off their prose writing abilities. Included in this volume are:"Louise," a tale from Max Allan Collins about his comic book detective, Ms. Tree, "Toto, I Have a Feeling We're Not in Kansas Anymore," a humorous science fiction tale about some odd mayhem taking place at an amusement park that hadn't been there the day before, "The Black '59," a rock'n'roll horror story about a guitar that holds the soul of a musician, a crime story by Kurt Busiek, "Life in Fur," which is about as sensitive, caring, and sweet as a werewolf story should be, and five more. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars DELICIOUSLY SCARY READ!
DELICIOUSLY SCARY READ!
This is a very good read. It is shocking and horrifying all in one in the best of ways. It is deliciously scary. My favorite story in this book is "The Black '59" written by the talented Bill Mumy and Peter David (Yes, that's right - the creaters of SPACE CASES. You heard me right!). Together they brought such a tale of fright and mystery that you won't believe what you are reading. I think it is very cool that Bill also reads this story on cd in SHOCK ROCK! I read this book first and then listened to Bill read it. Very creepy experience. Bill puts a lot of energy into all of his projects, and these are no different. I would highly recommend this book if you are a fan of horror and intrigue. I personally would love to see a short story on television of his story. It would be so cool if they would have a SHOCK ROCK series come out and do all of these stories! Bill and Peter also wrote a story for the book SHOCK ROCK II "The Undeadliest Game" which is just as horrifying as this one. Deliciously so! I really wish Bill would read that one as well! That would be so awesome!

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting collection
Now here's a fun little read -- About Comics' Nat Gertler rounded up some of the top comic book writers in the country and put together an anthology of prose short stories by them. There's no real theme or thread to this book, except that all of the authors involved are better known for writing comic books than novels or stories. In some cases you've got accomplished novelists like Peter David and Max Allan Collins, and sometimes you have writers like Kurt Busiek, who have rarely ventured outside of the four-color world. Collins brings his comic book character Ms. Tree into his story, while others deal with superheroes, werewolves, demons, romance and comedy.

As with any anthology, some stories are better than others. Busiek's "A Personal Touch" is a great story about a man who goes looking in the wrong places, and Paul Dini's "It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Feldman" is just plain funny. The eleven stories bounce all over in tone, subject matter and entertainment value. Still, it's a very interesting collection, and worth reading for a comic book fan. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, but not as good as the first one
People hoping to gain an understanding of how to write comic books really couldn't find a better source than "Panel One," the previous volume edited by Nat Gertler collecting comic book scripts and roughs by various creators. "Panel Two" is more of the same, but not as polished. There are more of the "thumbnail" versions of scripts, and some that are so detailed it's almost like reading the comic itself. Standouts in this book are Gail Simone's hilarious script for "Killer Princesses" and Scott McCloud's thumbnail script for "Zot!" (This was one of the super-detailed ones, it had me wanting to find the issue that followed it to find out how the story ended!) Others are interesting, such as the classic "Fatman" script -- but that one, unfortunately, was missing several pages. It was interesting to see the juxtoposition of the original script with the finished pages, however, so we were able to compare what changes the artist had made.

Overall, though, this book doesn't really add much or tell you anything you didn't know after reading "Panel One." It's an interesting addition, and certainly not a bad purchase, but it's not something you need or that helps as much as the previous book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars and the PAD era comes to a close
This is the last of the Titan Books reprinting of DC Comics' Star Trek and covers Star Trek (2nd series) issues #13 - 18.It contains the last of Peter David (PAD)'s regular scripts and begins the Howard Weinstein era (who would continue until the series cancellation with issue 80).

The book opens with the three-part "Return of the Worthy," which is basically "What If Star Trek met 'Lost in Space'?"This story is co-written by Bill Mumy, one of the stars of the TV series.Next up is "Worldsinger," a one-shot by J. Michael Straczynski concerning an individual who wishes to remain on his home planet, which is about to self-destruct.The Enterprise is tasked with evacuating all sentient inhabitants but can't force the Worldsinger to leave as he claims he will commit suicide if they do.This presents an interesting conundrum for Kirk & Co.Artwork for all of the preceding is by the excellent Gordon Purcell. This volume closes with "Partners", a two-part tale in which the Federation and the Klingon Empire are in a race to colonize a new sector. When supply ships from BOTH governments are attacked by super-powered pirates, Kirk and the Klingons reluctantly decide to join forces.A good effort by Mr. Weinstein is marred by the temporary loss of artist Purcell.Instead, the story is delineated by Ken Hooper. It's an adequate job that suffers from comparison to Purcell and inker Arne Starr.

I was never a fan of "Lost in Space," so the Worthy trilogy, despite PAD's scripting, doesn't do much for me.The remaining half of the book are solid efforts. If forced to choose, however, I would probably go with Star Trek Archives Volume 1: Best of Peter David. In addition to the Worthy trilogy, this volume contains PAD's swan song: "Once a Hero!" and the moving "Scotty's Story."

This book also contains candid, if dated, interviews from George Takei (Sulu) and William Shatner (Kirk) from the 1990's.

5-0 out of 5 stars OUTTA THIS WORLD!
If you are anxious for adventure, you'll love this graphic novel. My favorite section is THE RETURN OF THE WORTHY part written by my favorite graphic novelist Bill Mumy and Peter David, but the whole book is stellar! It is very imaginative as not only the old characters are brought back with a great sensation but new characters are brought in as well. I like this novel better than I even liked the show! Brilliant storyline as each chapter is outlined by a very interesting quote and thought. Great artwork from the Penciller Gordon Purcell, Inker Arne Starr, Letterer Bob Pinaha, Colorist Tom McCraw and Editor Robert Greenberger. It is based on Star Trek by Gene Roddenberry. Everyone collaborated well together to bring us this extraordinary journey back to the days of Star Trek with a whole new plot and twist. I really enjoyed this whole production and had a hard time putting it down. Also there are great interviews at the beginning of the book with George Takai and William Shatner. It keeps you interested and intrigued from the beginning to the end. Whooom! Zwakk! Fwaak! Fwakow! This book is really outta this world! ... Read more

DREAMWALKING STATE OF MIND
Bill is the best graphic novelist in the world. This one is one of my favorite's of his. I never will forget the day I got it in the mail. It was a dark and stormy night that night and I stayed up in bed all night reading this one. I couldn't even sleep until I had completed it. Well worth the sleep I missed! The storm went with the book. I was definitely in a state of dream walking after reading it. Great work, Bill. Can't wait for your next one! I am a big comic book fan of all of Bill's many list of credits in the comic book area. I always look for Bill's classic comics when I go to flee markets or anywhere else. I want to own them all one day! ... Read more
