Product Description
The Old Slave House has stood for some 166 years a few miles east of the village of Equality, Illinois. An antebellum plantation manor, it's long held the history of nefarious activities in its attic, stories of kidnappings and victims held against their will. It's been recognized for its ghosts — some say it's one of the most haunted places in America. It's been recognized for its architecture. That's why it's on the National Register of Historic Places and in September 2004, the National Park Service recognized it for its history as a station on the Reverse Underground Railroad by naming it to its National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom program. Slaves, Salt, Sex & Mr. Crenshaw is the result of eight years of research into the real history behind the stories long told to visitors, from the kidnappings and slave breeding to the visit of Abraham Lincoln and the potent political connections, both real and those just claimed, held by the owner John Hart Crenshaw and his family. This hardcover edition is an expanded and revised version of the book with more than 66 photographss, more Crenshaw and Taylor genealogy, plus a new timeline about the house. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Old Slave House--Slaves, Salt, Sex & Mr. Crenshaw
Excellent book.Superbly researched.Detailed accounts and documentation of the history of the Old Slave House in Southern Illinois. As a native of this area I grew up with the stories and lore of this historic site.I was happy to read this book and I appreciate the years of diligent effort Mr. Musgrave and his associates put into accomplishing this work. The Old Slave House is a building that is not only important to Illinois history, but also important to U.S. history because it is one of only a few remaining buildings that was specifically dedicated to the business of capturing and holding runaway slaves. The story of Mr. Crenshaw, the salt mines, the captured freedmen and runaway slaves is a sordid and horrific tale, but the history should be preserved and told.Kudos for Mr. Musgrave and his associates.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written and edited
This has to be one of the most poorly written and edited books that I have ever read. What could have been an excellent story was rambling, disjointed and riddled with mistakes in spelling and grammar. The information that the book contained could probably been edited down into a magazine article and would have made much more sense. Save your money. ... Read more

Excerpt: Désirées Baby is a short story written by American author Kate Chopin about miscegenation in Creole Louisiana during the antebellum period. Désirée is the adopted daughter of Monsieur and Madame Valmondé, who are wealthy Creoles in Louisiana. As a baby, she was discovered by Monsieur Valmondé lying in the shadow of a stone pillar near the Valmondé gateway. She is courted by another wealthy scion of a Creole family, Armand. They appear very devoted to one another and eventually have a child. The people who see the baby get a sense that something is unusual about it. Eventually they realize that the baby's skin is the same color as the quadroon (one-quarter African) nursemaid - the baby is not white. At the time of the story, this would have been considered a terrible taint. Because of Désirées unknown origins, Armand immediately assumes that she is part Black, and after Madame Valmondé suggests that Désirée and the baby return to the Valmondé estate, Armand tells her to leave. Désirée then takes the child and walks off into a bayou where she is never seen again. Armand then proceeds to burn all of Désirées belongings and the childs cradle, as well as all of the letters that she had sent ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=10458460 ... Read more
